This was a refreshing read. I've always liked that there's little to no romance between the protagonists on this author's detective/mystery books. This one's a light read, but it still got some of the tropes I seek in a book. Fish-out-of-water/new girl, obsessive stalkers, and well, murder and mayhem. Yeah, I'm a sucker for those.
At some point, I second-guessed (that was a constant word here, no?) some parts of the story, like how in the world did the hospital just let it go when that one incident happened? A few pages later, the book cleared my confusion. Cue the applause. I've learned from the detective methods, roused my great deduction prowess if I might boldly say (Project LOKI was a whole phase of my younger self), and it was really fun whenever my theories were on point.
Writing style and worldbuilding are both decent. I guess the only hitch was that I needed more personality from Maviel. Character building. The personas of Sigmund, Nikolai, and Landice were distinct. Hell, even our little mastermind has more character. Sure, Mav became better with her detective skills, but her personality is lacking. Like, who is she? Could've worked more on who Mav is even out of the Café as that would've made her character more appealing, seeing that she's the female main protagonist. It is hard to actually connect with a protagonist when everything you read about them is their practical lives — and I think that's one of the essence of reading, to feel a connection with the characters. But I do get that it is supposed to be a light read and that the plot may not have called for it. Just maybe something to consider next time?
Nevertheless, this one's a 4.5⭐️ read for me!
