Rate this book
Patients who undergo cardiac surgery require specialized care. Critical care nurses are crucial to their postoperative recovery and health. Cardiac Surgery Essentials for Critical Care Nursing, Third Edition is an indispensable resource for new and experienced nurses caring for patients in critical care units immediately following cardiac surgery and in the transitioning to home. With an evidence-based foundation, the Third Edition addresses nursing knowledge to meet the needs of acutely ill patients and strategies to optimizing patient outcomes in this dynamic field. Vital information has been added and updated to reflect significant changes in cardiac surgery as well as four new chapters based on needs of patients, families, and readers. These new chapters address nutritional issues, post ICU-care, psychological and spiritual support, and rehabilitation care post cardiac surgery.

Published in partnership with the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), Cardiac Surgery Essentials for Critical Care Nursing, Third Edition is a must-have reference for all nurses caring for acute and critically ill patients and an ideal resource to help prepare nurses who plan to take the Cardiac Surgery Certification (CSC(R)) subspecialty exam offered by the AACN.

Please allow me to be vulnerable for a second here on good reads about my textbook (yes I am a nerd and yes I think I am emotionally attached to this book)

As I turned the last page of this book today, I couldn’t help but reflect on this past 1.5 years on night shift in my first nursing job. I remember turning the first page of this book after my first day of orientation of my job. Every word was foreign to me. This book has made the nurse I am today. There were nights when I was quickly humbled and turned back to this book to equip myself .There were slow nights at 3am when I would have nothing else to do but to read page after page trying to make it to 7am. When I stepped into the new role of training people I would turn to this book, send pictures, and quotes to my interns. I read this book and think of certain patients and what their clinical manifestations, hemodynamics, families, stories and outcomes were. I think about how fortunate I am to be able to see and learn the intricate details of the Heart our Creator has designed. Cardiac Surgery Essentials for Critical Care Nursing 3rd Edition…. You mean a lot to me and I’ll forever turn back to you in the good and hard times🥹

Quotes i wrote down in my phone for my interns and my intern self in my notes

“The ejection fraction is the percentage of volume of the left ventricle that is ejected with each contraction, normal ranges include 65% to 70%”

“Muromonab-CD3 is a murine monoclonal antibody that binds to the CD3 site on the T lymphocytes, this activates and eliminates nearly all T cells for peripheral circulation”

“Protamine Sulfate is administered as a reversal agent for heparin, if given too rapidly sever hypotension and anaphylactic reactions may result”

The book has plenty of information and very detailed; however, the test questions have poor rationale and some of the answers have mistakes, which makes me wonder if this book had a good peer review.
