I received this book as an ARC from Human Kinetics Inc. in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
A few of my friends are familiar with Desi and her work and have told me about the release of this book. I loved how each page and each section broke down each pose and listed the benefits for surviving your pregnancy. I also love how Desi reflects on her personal experience and how yoga has helped her which makes the book more genuine and establish more of a connection with her. I also loved at the end of each chapter, the reader gets to combine all the individual workouts into one potential daily routine and then gives suggestions of food to eat to maintain good health even when you are pregnant.
We will consider adding this title to our R section in our Non-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
Recreational or serious athletes probably won't find any use for this - although an enjoyable read at times, so many pages are worth skipping. It's the typical mystical Kundalini woo-woo packaged up by your usual sunny state California personal trainer who extols all the amazing virtues of pregnancy. I love her upbeat disposition, but it can get grating when every single exercise seems to sidestep some of the really shitty realities of expecting. Not everything is worth visualising and creating a guided meditation for. Sometimes we need to sit with how unwell we feel and acknowledge tools and holistic therapies to reach for to see us through those darker moments. Not every day will be a celebration! Being in the body every single day in some way can help with that.
I'd recommend Fit and Healthy Pregnancy for a more practical and less fluffy guidebook for expecting women who are committed to being fit and strong throughout their pregnancies.
I love referring this amazing book to all pregnant and postpartum mommas! Such a valuable resource as a yoga teacher! Thank you, Desi, for sharing all of your experience and wisdom with us!! XO
