The Kybalion 101: a modern, practical guide, plain and simple

Rate this book
Master the Laws of Life with the Kybalion, simplified! Imagine finally understanding the teachings of the ancient Egyptian priestly order, and how their findings can be applied to your own existence. How much better would your life be if you actually understood the whys and hows of life? In what ways would your own existence be transformed? Dr. Matthew Barnes, chemist, biochemist, doctor, and bestselling author of The Emerald Tablet 101, The Hermetica 101, The Tao Te Ching 101, The Bhagavad Gita 101, and Jesus Christ, Zen Master, presents his interpretation of the third major work of the ancient Egyptian Philosopher, Hermes Trismegistus. And he does so in a way that is simple, “inspirational, and thought provoking.”. In his work, you’ll • Why the Kybalion is probably the most controversial spiritual work of the twentieth century.
• Why the teachings of the Kybalion, until recently, were a closely guarded secret.
• Where the outward manifestations of life ultimately originate from.
( The answer gives us a deeper understanding of God.)
• How you can grasp the entire essence of the Universe by observing
your own immediate environment. (Does this sound like Zen or what?)
• How to transform an unconscious perception of reality into a conscious one.
• How vibration determines material form, action, and behavior.
• The concept of duality, and how it relates to the Soul.
(Do you know where your Soul resides? Can you access it?)
• How the rhythms of life work, and how you can ride them, or even rise above them.
• How understanding gender is the key to understanding many of the mysteries of life.
• How to use Law to enhance your own wellbeing and spiritual advancement. “The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of Understanding.” -The Kybalion

This book is a translation and interpretation of an esoteric teaching, said to have originated with Hermes Trismegistus who is thought to have transformed himself into an ancient Egyptian god with this knowledge. The name “Trismegistus” means “thrice great,” so Hermes wasn’t just awesome, he was awesome cubed.

This Kabalion is part of a trilogy of works known as the “Hermetic Writings” and the only one of the three that was not written down in the earlier times, but rather passed down in secrecy to Initiates “when the student was ready.”

In 1912 the Kybalion was first published by three anonymous Initiates, so that caused some controversy.

Are you seeing the power of a triune playing into things here…Mr. Thrice Great, a trilogy of work and three anonymous Initiates…Holy trinity Batman!

So what does the Kabalion contain? The secrets it reveals are seven laws of the Universe.
These laws are not so much commandments as they are information about how the Universe functions. How things work, and if you become conscious of this knowledge, you can then choose to flow more harmoniously with the Devine Source of Intelligence that is not only behind it all but is IT. Barnes uses capital I, capital T, like say, a corporate IT infrastructure. But IT is also Source or God.

Barnes' intent with his book was to translate an obscure and challenging text into something that the modern, everyday person could read and understand. He is very successful with that, in my opinion. In fact, the temptation might be to quickly consume the book in one or two sittings. But what I love about The Kybalion 101, Barnes version, is that it is eloquently written, lyrical, like poetry.

Allow me to read from the chapter, The Law of Rhythm—a law which I must confess, I have been breaking my entire life. Me dancing, for example. Absolutely no feel for the beat in these feet. Total lack of awareness. But I digress and don’t for a minute want to detract from the beauty of this gem.

In and out goes the tide, high tide, then low
As if but the breath of God,
The inhalation and the exhalation of the universe,
The inhalation and the exhalation of life,
The inhalation and the exhalation of existence itself.

Matter and energy ebb and flow constantly
Between the positive and negative poles
Of existence and non-existence,
Between life and death and back again,
Over and over and over.

Matthew Barnes succeeds in making the text both understandable and elegant at the same time. It feels like secret wisdom should feel…magical!

You may be wondering, what are the 7 laws?

1. The Law of the Mind/Mentalism
2. The Law of Correspondence (meaning we are all connected in an infinite way! As above, so below, outward and inward…to infinity!)
3. The Law of Vibration
4. The Law of Polarity (Or Reversibility or Duality)
5. The Law of Rhythm
6. The Law of Cause and Effect
7. The Law of Gender

I had a teacher once who said, “It’s so simple. But it’s not easy.” In that vein, I am going to leave the explanation of these laws to Barnes’ modern, practical guide.

In a Nutshell

The Kybalion 101 is deep stuff, even when clearly interpreted by Matthew Barnes. There is plenty to contemplate and much possibility that this book may change the way you perceive the world and yourself within it.

FIVE STARS for Michael Barnes beautiful interpretation and his gift of making this work more accessible, and easy to digest.
