Part of the inscription on the base of the San Jacinto Monument reads: "Measured by its results, San Jacinto was one of the decisive battles of the world." James W. Pohl, a noted military historian, tells the exciting story of the pivotal battle of the Texas Revolution.
I have the pleasure of being acquainted with the librarian at the actual San Jacinto Monument and Museum. This was the first book she personally recommended to me for learning about the battleground and the history surrounding it.
The book concisely lays out the events that transpired prior in the war, leading up to the battle that ended it. It explains the flow and points of the battle, from strategy and orders employed to troop positions, in a way that is clear and easily understood.
The book is full of good information, but not overwhelming. I was easily able to finish it in a day. Overall, I very much recommend it as an excellent beginning source to learn about the Battle of San Jacinto and understand its connection to the overall events in the Texas Revolution.
The Battle of San Jacinto is exactly about that, in 49 pages. The book gives just enough information about the events leading up to this battle to understand what was going on, and then delves into the battle itself. The description of the 18-minute battle was so vivid in my mind as I read it, I felt like I was there. This book, although short, sucked me in. The icing on the cake is that the author was my history professor in college...he holds a special place in my heart. Anyone interested in Texas history will enjoy this quick read.
Son learning Texas history in 7th grade TX. Found at thrift store and bought to read and to help me home school him. He ended up doing a project on San Jacinto Monument and this book helped understand why monument was built. Great resource and fast read.
Yes this wasn't an a deep historical review of the Battle of San Jacinto. More like a brief overview stuffed with the feelings and assumptions of the author. I had Pohl for a history class once. Great guy. This book? Better alternatives out there to exploring the battle.
