Pineapple Upside Drown Cake

Rate this book
The battle for Miss Shrimp has deadly consequences. When the body of a beauty pageant contestant washes ashore, Ember and her sisters suspect magic is involved. Misty Key's paranormal community is growing, and the list of suspects includes vacationing witches, shifters, vampires, and zombies. But murder is the least of Ember's troubles. Another crystal ball has surfaced, and it's up to Ember to find it before a group of dark psychics finds it first. The battle to keep the peace between magical entities rages on, and it's not an easy task with an outbreak of Seer Pox spreading through the psychic network, a baking assistant suffering from spontaneous levitation, and a new zombie neighbor. And when Ember finally comes face-to-face with the killer, she must make a choice that could change the fate of the magical world forever. Book 6 in the Southern Psychic Sisters mystery series! A light-hearted cozy mystery featuring quirky small-town characters, magic, and recipes. This book does not contain cliffhangers, graphic violence, gore, or profanity.

Ember and her family all have ties to the psychic community, although they each have a different talent: with Ember, it is a connection to numbers; her sister Stevie talks to dead people; her younger sister can now talk to animals; and her mother has prophetic dreams. At a time when it is critical to interpret her mother's dreams for a second crystal ball that simply cannot fall into the wrong hands, the taint of magic surrounding the mysterious death of one of the Miss Shrimp Pageant contestants is an added complication. This series as always both provides a mystery with twists and turns before the final revelation, as well as laughable moments and fun family and friends interactions. In this story, we have Stevie suffering from Seer pox, complete with a hot pink eyepatch to hide her third eye, and long sleeves and gloves to hide the hideous rash. We also have some truly funny and touching moments between Stevie's son and his biological dad, Nate, who is now a zombie and trying desperately to become part of his son's life. (I loved how he could detach parts of himself in times of need!) This series is better enjoyed when read in order. I can't wait to see what happens between the various couples in the next story. Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing this book.

Family's complicated

A great read. Loved the way Stevie not only came down with Seer's Pox but from having a non existent love life she now has two men vying for her attention.
Stevie's come down with Seer's Pox and has taken to wearing an eye patch and clothes that actually cover her from head to foot. This doesn't stop her from going with her sister to view the Miss Shrimp contest. What they don't expect is to find one of the contestants dead on the beach. How did she get down there. Also their mother has had a disturbing dream about another crystal ball dating back the the war. As they investigate the murder and their mother tries to get another dream about the ball's location, Stevie starts getting closer to Nate. When the location is known, the ball has to be retrieved before IA find it. Can they get the ball? What will IA do once they get it? Will they find out why the young we was killed? Who is the leader of IA and the mole in the Seer's office?

This is a major roller-coaster ride that once you get on you can't get off until the end. How far does loyalty go? This book in the series has so many twists and turns and unexpected events and a really surprising ending. I love this series, but this book had me going like no other. The Greene family is once again involved, this time trying to solve a murder as well as save the world! When Stevie comes down with Seer Pox, her sour personality is enhanced and she can't use her gift to help Ember or Aqua solve the murder of a pageant competitor. When the head of the Claires asking for the sisters' help to find a second crystal ball that if it falls into the IA group it could be disaster for the world. Also asked to help is Nate, Stevie's son's father and a zombie who Stevie seems to still really care about. There are so many threads woven into the plot of this book you just can't put it down. The author very deftly pulls each thread until you reach the end and then...wow what an ending, totally unexpected! Each book in this series seems to top the previous, if that is even possible. A must read series. I received an ARC from the author, but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

I like the story and the characters. However,
Sometimes the author will wrote something without fully explaining it. A character had been mind wiped about magic and it messed her up a bit. It had side effects from time to time. Over several books it is stated there is nothing to do about it. All of a sudden there is a shot to fix it? We know where it came from. But what exactly is it? What does it do? Why does it help when nothing else could? Why didn't they know about it sooner. And connections are made between characters kinda out of the blue.

And the battle goes on between good and evil

Ember and her sister, Stevie find out there is another crystal ball and are sent to retrieve it with Stevie’s undead baby’s father, Nate. All heck breaks loose and the Claires and their dark adversaries meet and what will be the outcome of the battle? I’ll keep tuning in to find out.

This series continues to provide enjoyment and good reading.

With some twists and turns you weren’t expecting, at least I wasn’t, the series continues to evolve more deeply. Just when you think you figured it out you find out you haven’t or did you? Read on and see,

A death at a beauty pageant leads to a secret plot

We learn about a new disease called Seer's Pox which disrupts gifts and causes Technicolor pox. Nate and Ember are sent on a special mission. And the characters' interactions continue to provide entertainment.

Quick read

Good vs evil with good prevailing. Throw in seers, the undead, werewolves, family, a bakery & murder makes this a quick read. I liked it! Looking forward to the next story.

Not as much psychic stuff as usual

A nice cozy but I was hoping for more psychic stuff. That’s the fun part of these books. This episode had more of the rest of the magic folk involved, ok but not great.
