Dying Ashes #4

Dreadful Ashes

Rate this book
Everyone thought Ashes was the scariest thing in town. They were wrong.

After the Ur-demon Meladoquiel tried to destroy Ashes, her best friends, and the love of her life, the Strigoi hoped things might get a little easier.
Life loves to disappoint.
Two strange vampires and a mysterious visitor from Next Door hound her every step. A powerful supernatural drug called Ruby is spreading like an epidemic through the streets of Birmingham. A series of brutal murders threaten a new friend while a pack of werewolves turn the city upside down in search of vengeance. And behind it all, a new foe is working a powerful magic that will change the Magic City forever.
Can Ashes, an injured, outnumbered vampire, find a way to stop it all before it’s too late? While figuring out her feelings for Tamara? While helping the disowned Moroi survive when her own family wants her dead? And while battling with the worst mistake of her life?
Or is it finally too much for even iron-willed Ashes to handle?

Dreadful Ashes is the fourth novel in the Dying Ashes series, a gripping vampire urban fantasy/thriller about a smart-assed dead lesbian and her adventures in the supernatural mixing pot of Birmingham, Alabama.
This series was made for those who love intense, thrilling action, witty banter, and deep character development. Fans of Craig Schaefer’s Daniel Faust series, and Simon R. Green’s Nightside will love this beautifully-written romp through the supernatural dark side of the Magic City.

What fans are saying about this vampire paranormal series by Annathesa Nikola Darksbane, Co-Author of the popular Dakota Shepherd series:

★★★★★ "[...]As a lesbian who loves Urban Fantasy it’s wonderful to have a series that not only features women who love women, but that’s also extremely well written to the point where I’m positive that anyone regardless of sexual orientation will like it. Dreadful Ashes is another great entry to what has become my favorite series of books and I’m glad to highly recommend it." -Kindle Customer

Annathesa Darksbane loves writing books, which you may or may not have noticed. Specifically, she loves writing more of what she’d love to read the most: action-packed books with likable, diverse characters that keep the pages turning—and with two published series and more on the way, she’s only getting started. She likes to put some twists, suspense, a bit of romance, and a lot of herself into every book she writes with the hope that you’ll enjoy reading them half as much as she enjoyed writing them.
On the off chance she’s not writing, she enjoys video games, martial arts, philosophy, psychology, learning more about almost anything, taking care of her little family, and dreaming of becoming an actual cyborg.

4.5 Stars. This was the perfect book to read on Halloween. I love this series and was so happy to get my hands on this book. This book is pure paranormal action with a little bit of romance. This is the fourth book in the series. I highly recommend starting at book one Dead Girl's Ashes. While each book has a solid ending they are all connected.

Mrs. and Mrs. Darksbane are a married writing duo. Their books are normally available on Kindle Unlimited, and if you don’t have KU, all their books are very reasonably priced. If you are a fan of paranormal and urban fantasy books, they are definitely worth checking out.

It has been over a year since I read book 3, so it took me a minute to remember everything. Luckily, Darksbane lightly gave some reminders that helped my memories to come back. I was really happy with this book. Finally we get the beginning of the romance I was hoping for since the first book. I think it may be why this is my favorite of the series because it made my heart happy. These are action packed books, but Darksbane took the time to add in a little romance. I can’t wait to see how the couple grows as the series continues.

As I mentioned this book was packed with action. This was pure entertainment. Vampires of all different types, wolf and coyote shifters and demons are some of the main supernatural beings; many at war with each other so the action just continues. I honestly had trouble putting the book down. Just stopping for a meal, all I could think of is picking the book back up. I love good entertaining books that just grab you and don’t let go.

If you could not tell, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was perfect for this time of year and a ton of fun to read. If you are new to the series, the first three books were all just re-released. They included new covers, more editing, that sort of thing, so it’s the perfect time to try this series out. The older editions pop up on the Goodreads books pages, but if you look below to other editions you can switch to the new ones to make sure you are grabbing the most up to date copies.

A copy was given to me for a honest review.

As a fan of the series it feels like I’ve been waiting for this book forever now, and I’m happy to report that it was well worth it. Things pick up from the last entry finding our hero Ashes, the powerful and frightening Strigoi vampire with a heat of gold, and her friend (who after a few books is finally becoming more than just a friend) Tamara, a Moroi vampire that feeds of people’s emotions and life-force, at a bit of a low point following the conclusion of the last novel.

This time around Ashes has to contend with a pack of werewolves, her vampiric progeny, a revolutionary Asian vampire and his frightening Fey counterpart, a powerful and connected Moroi vampire out for revenge and a blood vampire who may or not be a foe. There’s a LOT going on in this book, but the authors do a good job keeping things flowing in a coherent narrative and it makes for a fun and swift read at 330 pages.

The only negative I can think of is that a couple of the antagonist’s motivations were a little unclear to me, although I don’t know if maybe I missed something which should be cleared up with a second reading. Also oh my stars poor Ashes has been through so much by this point and I’ve never seen an author(s) put their main protagonist though so much physical damage before. There’s nothing remotely glamorous being a Strigoi vampire and they really put Ashes through the ringer. That last part isn’t a negative, but I hope in the next book she’s able to catch a little break! That being said, the fact that no matter how hard things become, Ashe’s indomitable spirit remains unbroken and it’s one of the things that endears me so much to her.

On a final note, as a lesbian who loves Urban Fantasy it’s wonderful to have a series that not only features women who love women, but that’s also extremely well written to the point where I’m positive that anyone regardless of sexual orientation will like it. Dreadful Ashes is another great entry to what has become my favorite series of books and I’m glad to highly recommend it.

The more things change the more they stay the same

So this series has gotten...frustrating to say the least. The plot of each book changes and yet remains the same. Ashes has to face an unimaginable crisis, race against the clock and save the world by the skin of her teeth with allies that step in at the crucial time, every time. Oh and something terrible happens in her love life despite her deserving much better. That's it, that's the plot of all 4 books. But hey the authors were going to put a sequel out 4 years ago but seem to have vanished so I guess there won't be another.
