Ilona Andrews—#1 New York Times bestselling author of Magic Shifts—once again pulls readers into the dark and dangerous world of the Kate Daniels novels...

Shapeshifting tigress Dali Harimau may be a powerful healer and magic user, but she’s far from what might be called “normal”. She dislikes the violence and bloodshed that are a way of life for most of her kind, even going so far as to become a vegetarian. The last thing she wants is trouble...

Jim Shrapshire is an original, hardcore badass. A jaguar shifter, he’s been tasked with keeping Atlanta’s Cat Clan in line, which he does with swift and lethal force when necessary. His only soft spot is for the petite Dali, whose kindness he calls upon when he is injured.

When Dali is approached by a desperate woman whose grandmother has vanished, Jim is concerned enough to help investigate. But what they find may just be the end of them—an enemy whose skill in the dark arts is matched only by their willingness to kill anyone in their way...

Magic Steals was originally published in the anthology Night Shift

I found this in the anthology Night Shift, but I only wanted to read the Kate Daniels story.
Sorry. But Jim and Dali are such a cute couple and I've wanted to read their story for so long.
Anyway.

So Jim is Curran's BFF, head of the Cat Clan, and the Pack's enforcer (<--in this one), which makes him 100% badass.

description

And Dali is a white tiger with a special magical skill set that makes her 100%...

description

Well, ok. She's not exactly a badass.
Especially by Cat Clan standards.

description

First, she's a vegetarian. --> gets queasy at the sight of blood. That's, like...unheard of for shifters. Add to that, she's afraid of getting hurt and kind of a horrible fighter? Well, it almost makes the part where she needs to wear glasses no big deal.
But it doesn't matter, because Jim is crazy about her just the way she is. Dawww!

description

So this isn't the story of how they met, but it is the story of how Jim convinced her to believe in their relationship. And, of course, the best way to do that is to get into an adventure and go eat a bad guy together!

Of course, Dali usually fights things in a bit of a more magical way, but when it's Jim's ass on the line, she discovers she has more of an ability to ride to the rescue and roar than she thought she did.

description

Highly recommended to KD fans!

Dali and Jim shine in MAGIC STEALS! I am always delighted when my favorite author(s) take a side character or two and flesh out a delightful novella about them. This allowed us to take a sneak peek into Dali and Jim as characters, and into their romance, and now I’m an even bigger fan! Especially of Dali! Dali isn’t certain where her relationship with Jim is going. Also, she has her meddling mother to deal with. And this meat-eater thing? Ugh. (so funny!) When a curse strikes a member of the community, Dali must use her magic to find out who’s behind it. A great short story!

Magic Steals is a Jim and Dali novella, and just being honest, they are not my favorite. I don’t mind Dali. I think her character is a little OTT. I mean, seriously? A blind vegetarian tiger that gets sick at the sight of blood?? Maybe one of those things, but all of them?

OTT.

Then there’s Jim. I hate Jim. He’s an asshole. The end.

So there’s that.

The novella itself . . . One of my favorite things about the Kate Daniels universe is new and exciting twists on various mythologies. You’ve got the creepy upir in Magic Bites, the Formorians in Magic Burns, the Rakshasas in Magic Strikes, etc.

Magic Steals doesn’t have that. There’s a brief nod at Indonesian magic, but that’s a small part of the whole which also includes a killer car and zombies.

Unfortunately, this novella didn’t do a lot for me. It was entertaining and I don’t regret having read it—it is Ilona, after all—but it’s probably not going to get a reread.

[Re-read, July 2023] A fun Dali novella. Liked it a lot more than the first one. 3.5 stars

Dali's mom is a delight. “Did what?”
“Dropped things. Are you a jaguar or an elephant?”
“I’m a stray cat, apparently. And your mother wants to neuter me.”

Well, I want to hear it! “I asked you out because—”
I raised my hand. “No, please don’t tell me.” I was too scared to find out. “Just think about it.”

Gotta love tiger Dali. “The Queen Jenglot raised her head, opened her mouth, and hissed at me, the black magic behind her flaring like demonic wings.
What? Outrageous. The nerve. Who did she think I was? I stomped my huge white paw onto the ground and roared.”

Brony grandma. “Komang sighed. 'She collects My Little Pony toys.'”

Magically conscious. “You know, you’ve got to be eating clean. You’ve got to take care of your body. It’s about your carbon and magical footprint.”

No, I don't think that's... “We went outside. 'Sexual assault?' I raised my eyebrows.
'He has a daughter. He’s probably constantly worried she’ll get assaulted,' Jim said.”
...a normal constant worry to have. (And it turns out I was right)

I'll get diabetes from all this sugar. “My heart sank. 'Does this mean that if I expect caring boyfriend Jim, you’ll give me that?'
'No,' he said. 'You just get me the way I am, which means you’re screwed. I’m mostly an asshole.'”

Batman cameo. “The owners of the comic shop were college kids. We only met one, Brune Wayne”

Jenglots and old hags and haunted muscle cars. “The head of the hag emerged, one baleful pale eye then the other, a crooked long nose and wide slash of a mouth filled with shark teeth.
The muscle car was almost on the boy. Jim was ten feet away.”
Just another day in the KD universe.

At least she didn't throw it away. “I jerked the wooden cover off the oversize bread basket, stuck the cutting board and the steak in there, pulled it closed, and raced for the door.” I was so shocked at her throwing away all the food the first time.

Yeah, that's my type of situatonal comedy. “'I don’t know. I’m checking into it. It is likely that...'
Jim walked into the kitchen. He was wearing a white towel around his hips and nothing else. His skin glistened with dampness—he had obviously just taken a shower.
I stared at him in horror.
He nodded to my aunt, my mother, and the two other women. 'Ladies.'
Then he walked to my silverware drawer, got a fork, took a plate out of my cabinet, walked to the breadbox, speared the steak with his fork, put it on the plate, turned around and walked out.
This did not just happen. It did not happen.
Aulia looked at me with eyes as big as dessert plates and mouthed, 'Wow.'
All four of them stared at me.
I had to say something. I opened my mouth. 'As I was saying'”

He'll never drive in this relationship. “'Good idea.' Jim got up. 'I’ll drive.'
I just laughed and got my keys.”

Mr. Female Expert “'What’s the deal with you?' Jim asked.
I’d been thinking about the zombie fight. 'Nothing.'
'I have three sisters,' Jim reminded me. 'I know what nothing means.'”

That mental image. “You don’t have to be a good fighter for us to make a good team. If you just sit on our attacker for a second, that’s enough for me to kill them.” Would be cute/funny thinking about tiger-form Dali sitting on their opponent in a fight if not for the intent to kill. Mahon and Curran gotta get on that and change it to first blood.

That skip. “'Squeak, little mouse,' Jim said, his voice raising my hackles. 'Squeak while we wait.'

'Do I look okay?'
'Yes,' Jim said. “You look gorgeous.'”

3.75 stars for this interim novella in the Kate Daniels series. This is the second novella featuring Dali Harimau (and you should read the first novella, Magic Dreams, before this one). Dali is an Indonesian young woman with thick glasses and body image and self-confidence issues ("too skinny, no figure"). Also: she's a white tiger shapeshifter, vegetarian, magic worker (unusual for a shapeshifter), AND she has penchant for informally racing - and frequently wrecking - cars. Whew!

Dali is in love with Jim Shrapshire, the jaguar shapeshifter who's the chief of security for Atlanta's shapeshifter pack, and is trying to keep their relationship hidden from others (especially her mother) because of all the expectations that will hit ... and because she can't believe her relationship with Jim will really work out long-term.

An Indonesian friend, Iluh Indrayani, asks Dali to look into the mysterious disappearance of her grandmother. Grandmother is soon found, but obscure and unlikely Indonesian black magic is implicated. As Dali and Jim investigate further, and more disastrous magical curses hit, they're having difficulties tying these events together and figuring out who or what is behind them.

I thought the mystery in this one was particularly good. Dali ... I can't quite with her Indonesian Manic Pixie Dream Girl thing. A little bit too much quirkiness is loaded into one small package, but maybe that's just me.

Full review to come, after it posts on Fantasy Literature.

Second book for white tiger Dali and jaguar Jim.

The book deals with three topics:

1. How Dali perceives herself. Dali has a low self-esteem. She thinks she is not pretty enough, not woman enough, not strong enough. Just not enough for someone like Jim. Jim will help her understand what a unique, beautiful shifter woman she is.

2. How the relationship between Dali and Jim proceeds. Until now they still have not made love, they have not talked about commitment and mating. Jim wants more. Dali is afraid. Jim will win, because he knows better.

3. The disappearance of a sweet Indonesian grandmother. Jim and Dali will battle with monsters from three continents, with zombies, with a horrible curse, even with themselves. Great mystery and adventure!

This novella was so fun! I can't believe it... you can be a magestic beast, strong, fast and smart and still be insecure about yourself. I think I've read it all!

Dali had a crush on Jim for many years but she never thought herself worthy of landing him and then keeping him. She used to dream about him all the time...

Dali is such a sweetheart and her magic abilities are out of this world.

I was really curious about Jim, Kate always admired his physic but she seemed kind of scared of him, even after all these years of friendship. I don't blame her, Jim emanates a kind of silent type menace that can be quite scary.

I really loved these two, their love warmed my heart.

I wonder if the duo-writers-extraordinaire will ever create a character that I won't like. Even their villains are amazing.

I love Dali and her and Jim together make so happy!😊
In this novella the two of them are trying to label their relationship. She thinks he's perfect and is madly in love, but she can't see him loving her back. Normally I hate the cute girl who doesn't see it trope. I mean if a few guys are lusting after you, there's probably a reason for it.
But with Dali it's more understandable from the shapeshifter perspective. She has to wear thick glasses, gets sick at the sight of blood, is a vegetarian and when she changes into a white tiger, she is disoriented for a few seconds. Also she does magic. All these things make her an unlikely candidate for an alpha mate. Unless that alpha is Jim. He thinks she's perfect. *romantic sigh* So sweet.
So, she thinks they are just dating, he thinks they will be mated. Meanwhile, she has to use her magical powers of good to battle the forces of evil. We're talking zombies, hags, evil cars (like in Christine). Everyones deepest fears.
Whew! Lots going on in a small space. Luckily they make time to further their romance. (Yes, I mean sex)
Great story!! Don't skip it in the series. 😊💕📖

The plot was intriguing and complex enough to keep me interested, and I was guessing at the culprit’s identity until the end. I don’t know yet if any of what happened in this novella will tie into the main series, but it was nice to see more of Jim, and to see him work with Dali.

I like Dali, but I can’t say that I love her. I can’t even explain why; she is not a bad character at all. She is feisty, funny, and interesting, but I can’t bring myself to care that much about her, so reading a novella about her is not that exciting for me. I do like that she is brilliant and relies on her brains and magic rather than brute force, like many shifters do.

Jim, on the other hand, is a character that I enjoy reading about more. His dark and mysterious persona takes the back seat when he is with Dali, and we can see a sweeter and more relaxed side of him. It was also refreshing to see that, despite being a strong and badass alpha, he can discuss his feelings without shame or trying to diminish what he feels.

Dali and Jim are really sweet. They complete each other so well; it is cute to see them interact and slowly learn how to navigate their relationship and feelings. I would enjoy seeing them in the rest of the series, and seeing more of Jim especially, considering how important he is to the pack and how vital his work is for Curran and Kate.

As a fan of the Kate Daniels series I have been rooting for Dali and Jim ever since I read their first novella Magic Dreams so I was excited to see more of them as a couple. This story fits into the timeline during events in Magic Rises while Kate and Curran are off in Europe leaving Jim in charge of the Pack while they're gone.

Dali is such a brilliant character, not only is she an incredibly rare white tiger shifter who has an unusual magical ability but she's also the only vegetarian tiger you're ever likely to meet, her eye sight is terrible and she faints at the sight of blood. Basically Dali is the complete opposite of Jim who is the Alpha of the cat clan and Curran's right hand man. I think one of the reasons I love this couple so much is because of their differences though, they compliment each other's characters so well and it's nice to see a lighter, more relaxed side to Jim because of the way he is comfortable enough to let his guard down around Dali.

Dali has a lot of insecurities about herself, she doesn't feel like she fits in around the other shapeshifters but Jim is brilliant at boosting her confidence. He is so incredibly sweet towards her and I love the way he doesn't let her keep hiding their relationship. As with the first novella there are some hilarious scenes with Dali and her mother but Jim makes the whole situation even more amusing. This novella has plenty of action, it introduces us to some more of the Indonesian mythology from Dali's ancestry and it has an incredibly sweet romance. I still hope we get to spend more time with this couple in the future but I'm very glad we got a second novella about them.

I think I've run out of sensible words to say about this series. I love the characters, love the world building, love the mythology, the action, the friendships, the relationships, the humour. Everything is just pretty much perfect. Kate and Curran are my favourite fictional couple and the series has some of the best side characters you'll ever come across so rereading these books is like catching up with old friends.

Even if it sounds incongruous, what with Jim being such a badass, but he and Dali are just so cute together. And who would have thought that Jim, Chief of Security for the Pack, jaguar and alpha of Clan Cat can talk about his feelings so easily; it was both beautiful and refreshing to witness.

“I watch everyone, but when I watch you, all I feel is . . . that I want to be with you. You will never lie to me. And if I need help, you will be there. With you, I breathe.“

As for Dali, I like how quirky she is, and that she’s not a human bombshell, but this beautiful, badass white tiger who is also a vegetarian, legally half blind and a lover of car races (in human form). While her magic, which often involves calligraphy, isn’t my favorite, I love how extremely smart she is, how she knows her lore, much like Kate.

Other than the aforementioned romance, a mystery to be solved is central to the book, just as we are used to. I loved that particular one; it kept me guessing and was very intriguing till the very end.

Just one minor complaint: it always bothers the hell out of me when people (Dali) toss whole meals in the trash, no matter the circumstances. Like the food has just been perfectly prepared, what are you doing? Just because you want to obfuscate your date with Jim in front of your mother? It’s not like shapeshifters can smell it any less in the garbage bin.

Ok, rant over. I still loved this! I will continue my re-read of the series by finally also reading the novellas.

I love Dali. I love her as a foil to Kate. She's magic-based, more insecure, but just as much a badass. I really wish she was in the main series more but I love seeing the way she solves the mysteries in the novellas and maybe that would get lost if she was just a KD-sidekick.

4 stars - enjoyable even for newbies to Kate Daniels' world

This short story was my introduction to the Kate Daniels series, which meant that I had absolutely no preconceptions about Dali Harimau and Jim Shrapshire. Written in Dali's POV, Magic Steals is about their possible romantic relationship.

Dali is a distinctive, quirky character. She embodies the wish fulfillment of every introverted female with average physical traits because Dali's inner self manifests itself as a 700+ pound white tiger whose visage glows with magical power. In contrast, Jim is the typical big, bad wolf alpha jaguar, who is also the Pack's paranoid chief of security.
Jim had only two modes: menacing and waiting to menace. He usually worked so hard on being scary, he intimidated people while he was asleep.
Usually when Jim showed his teeth to people, he was about to kill them.

I'm not at all into reading about insecure people and am even less inclined if the story is about weak women. But if they're more than their insecurities and demonstrate bravery, then I'm willing to give the story a chance to win me over. And that's what happened. I was charmed by an interracial relationship (weretiger and werejaguar 😉), by the humor, and then by a truth uttered by Dali's mother:
True beauty isn't in how big your breasts are, or how large your eyes are, or how pretty your nose is.
All that is temporary.
True beauty is in how that person makes you feel.

So will Dali listen to her mother's wisdom or be controlled by her self doubt? Because apparently in their world, magic allows for mythological nightmares to come to life and to take others' lives.

Magic Steals is #6.5 in a series with 10 full-length Kate Daniels novels. It was not the most logical place to start, but it gave me a quick feel for the authors' style before investing the time for such a long series. This story takes place while Kate and Curran are away in Europe during #6 Magic Rises so it didn't give away anything in the Kate Daniels' storyline. It can thus be read as a standalone. This tale may be about Dali and Jim's relationship, but it wouldn't be a Kate Daniels' urban fantasy without death threats, zombies, and other monsters.

I love how we always see another side to the badass Jim Shrapshire when he’s around Dali Harimau. Jim is always so broody, so intent on protecting the Pack, that it’s easy to forget that he has a softer side too, and Dali definitely brings out his soft side ;-)

And I just love tigress Dali, who is a vegetarian, almost blind and hell on wheels :-D She is adorable, and with this book we got to see her work her magic, which was just fantastic.

I love the romance between Dali and Jim, they are so sweet and sexy together. And I would really love an entire novel just for them.

Another fantastic addition to the awesome Kate Daniels series! A definite must read for all fans of this series.

“Jim wasn’t just a badass. He was a badass who wrote a book for badasses on how to be a badder badass.”

I enjoyed this novella even more than Magic Dreams. Dali and Jim are now oficially one of my favourite couples in this series. There's lots of magic, weird creatures, mystery, investigation, creepy zombies and some romance time.
Recommended for all fans of Kate Daniels series!

“What's the deal with you?" Jim asked.
"Nothing."
"I have three sisters," Jim reminded me. "I know what nothing means.”

One thing is for sure, I miss Kate Daniels & co. And I cannot wait for Magic Binds to come out.

As for this one, it made me like Dali a little more. I always laugh with the Andrews and their characters. I like their humor. And I appreciate the amount of beating their heroes can handle.

Magic Steals by Ilona Andrew
Kate Daniels series #6.5 or 7.5 depending on list. Paranormal urban fantasy suspense. Originally published in the Anthony Night Shift.
Shapeshifter tigress Dali Harimau is a healer and magic user but doesn’t like the violence and bloodshed that is typical of her world. Jim Shrapshire is a jaguar shifter. It’s his job to keep Atlanta’s Cat Clan in line. He’s not afraid to use lethal force when necessary and in his world, it’s often standard protocol. When Dali is approached by a desperate woman, Jim knows he will do whatever is needed to keep Dali safe.

Fast moving episode of chasing and fighting, killing and surviving. It’s bloody and brutal and part of this world, although it seems more so in this novella. Maybe because I’m used to a deeper story of familiar characters in the longer books in the series. There is a romance here too that is the focus of the pair when they have time off from all the interruptions.

My previous review of this one wasn't actually a review at all, just a funny quote, and this time around I would say that the three stars will stay only because of Jim. Seeing Jim as more than how we normally see him is so fun. Dali I'm hit or miss on because the girl has a lot of insecurities and is quirky to the n'th degree, but I like that she's different, I like seeing a happy Jim, so the rating won't be changing.

Definitely noticing, though, that if it isn't a Kate-centric, or Julie-centric, novella.. I am not as gaga for them the second time around.

Read as part of Night Shift.

Dali is not my favourite character, I never really liked her -- she is just too over the top. Whiny, half blind, insecure, just a bit too much to come across as totally believeable. Even so, I liked this story. The plot was good.

Trigger warnings: violence, blood, gore, death of a child (in the past), car accident (in the past).

So when I finished my final book for the NEWTs last night, I realised that if I read one more book, I would have read 300 books in the first 8 months of the year. So, like, obviously I was going to read one more book. And this one, being a novella, was perfect.

This is also a fantastic mix of the mystery/violent ick that one would expect from the Kate Daniels series while also letting us see that Jim Shrapshire, Resident Badass, is actually a Soft Boi(TM) where Dali is concerned and it's pretty stinking adorable.

10/12/2016
A really short novella from the Kate Daniels world that packs a pretty great punch. This is set in Atlanta during the sixth Kate Daniels book, so basically Kate and Curran are off being badasses in Eastern Europe/Western Asia and this is what's happening while they're away.

I've always loved Jim as a secondary character in the Kate Daniels world. He's a serious badass with a lot of sassy moments and he's delightful. But here, in the early stages of his relationship with Dali, we get to see a softer side of Jim.

Similarly, I've always really liked Dali as a secondary character. I mean, she's a teeny tiny Indonesian woman with a visual impairment who turns into a fuck off sized tiger and who can curse people with calligraphy. I mean...AMAZING.

This story is equal parts hella creepy (I mean, the villain is CUTTING OFF THEIR TOES to curse people. NO THANK YOU) and hilarious. And it was exactly what I needed in between the seven million children-in-war books that I seem to be reading at the moment...

Oh, how I adore Jim and Dali together. They're so very different and oh, so right for one another. Plus, Jim's decision to let Dali take the lead in how their relationship progresses makes me all mushy inside. For such a big, scary dude, he's awfully sweet to his lady friend. *draws glittery hearts around them*

This time around, Jim tags along when Dali goes looking for a missing woman and he gets to see a side of Dali he's never seen. Her ability to counteract evil is pretty impressive and Jim's acceptance of that side of her cemented my adoration of them as a couple. Not to mention, Dali's fears about not being a strong enough mate for someone like Jim were given a perfectly thought out answer by the big, silent cat.

Loved, loved, loved Jim's approach to outing them as a couple to Dali's family. It probably wasn't quite as amusing for Dali, but I got a giggle out of it. As for Dali's fears about her quirks interfering in fights, the lady did what she needed to do and she was pretty kickass when the chips were down.

Not going to lie, I could go for more novellas starring these two. They work for me on quite a few levels.

Her kurban farklı kültürlerden gelen sihirle kuşatılmış durumda. Pek Dali ve Jim'in kabusu nedir?

"What's the deal with you?" Jim asked.
"Nothing."
"I have three sisters," Jim reminded me. "I know what nothing means."

Can we just take a moment and appreciate how Dali & Jim are perfect together? They are my all time favorite couple and I could read their short stories over and over again!

description

If you want to dream about true love (in case you didn't find your soulmate yet), read it.
If not, read it anyway.

Note: It's not a romance book, there is a lot of action. It is just me who is focusing on irrelevant parts. :)

Dali's POVs are so great!
It's a shame we don't see more of her in the main series!!
But why is there no mention of

Also did I mention how much I loved Dali's novellas? :D
