Bernadette: The point of becoming an escort was to pay for my law degree. Period.
One more year and a hefty tuition bill had me rethinking my no sex rule with clients. One exception to this rule with one client that changed my entire life. He was rude, opinionated, prejudiced and downright ignorant. For him to have an affinity for a certain type of woman, he surely didn’t know how to talk to them. He knew how to have them screaming his name. Outside of this, my one wish was that he would STFU. We had five nights only and I was counting down to the hour until I wasn’t. Five turned into fifty. Hookups turned into sleepovers. A client turned into a significant other. But how? Why? For goodness sakes, he was a damned Republican!
Trent: A man over fifty is afforded the privilege to say and do what he wants. Period. The criteria for my escorts were black women. Period.
Note: This book is a bit different than a normal Xyla Turner book. It is IR, BWWM, and HEA, but it's a bit darker and really sexy. If you're not easily offended, then this is for you.
Xyla Turner was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She has always been a writer, even as a teenager, she wrote short stories and essays that won awards and nation-wide competitions. Xyla is an avid reader of romance novels and a sucker for sassy females and dominant males. She is a lifelong learner, High School Vice-Principal and a pretty good Auntie. Outside of reading, Xyla likes to spend time with her family and friends, experiment with dangerous adventures and travel. She writes different genres, but her favorite is romance.
Q: Can a staunch Republican fall in love with a reluctant Democrat? A: Yes! Protesting (her) ALL the way.
Trent is an over-the-top alpha male and Bernadette is a no nonsense woman who isn't afraid to stand up to Trent, over and over again. This hero had me laughing out loud with his many witticisms. Trent and Bernadette are a perfect match and the sex is pretty hot too!
Cameo appearance by Rich and Lisa Wells from Across the Tracks!
This story ends on a satisfying note and we'll get to hear more from this couple in the near future.
Highly Recommended: READ IT!

I love taboo topics and erotica, but this book just ain’t it. I haven’t felt this frustrated with a female lead in a long time. So many things just did not make sense. She is literally stupid. Also, her erratic mood swings at random times mixed with the diatribes made zero sense. I found myself rooting for the male lead who’s written so superficially that I was able to overlook it. And don’t get me started on the love making scenes. It felt like a good girl trying to sound bad. Definitely cringe-worthy. The only reason I finished this is for the reading challenge. Other than that, no way. PS, the lead heroine bought a timeshare. That truly sent me over the edge beyond her failing to use protection in her line of work. Bad decisions all over the place.
Another great read by Xyla. I loved stories with these kinds of themes. I loved Trent he just could not help himself. He truly did love and care for Bernadette. He just had a lot to learn. Great read.
I tried to brace myself to read this. I read the descriptor and several reviews so I expected to be slightly uncomfortable. But I was immediately hit by the weak rationalization on Bernadettes' part about being a escort as the best means to finance her education and why she hard to accept being with clients who specifically wanted sex. Preferably rough BDSM type. Of course Trent is introduced as the type who prefers that with his escorts and he's a white male who only hired black females. Ugh!!! Instant flash to "Massuh...Slave bed-warmer scene". I had to pump the brakes and delete. Usually I purchase books right out the gate but something told me not to with this one and thankfully I followed that instinct. No way could I believe something good could ever come from a scenario like that. So for me this is a resounding NO! But there seem to be many who find this entertaining and if you can overlook the seediness on the surface of the main character's you may be able to enjoy this tale. I'm about to move onto something by Olivia Gaines....I need something to sweep away the bad taste left by this stuff.
4.0⭐️ NOVEMBER 2019 UPDATE: This book has an expanded epilogue. Bernadette meets Trent’s family, the answers to many questions are revealed, and Bernadette gives Trent a special surprise gift. I wouldn’t have missed this for all the tea in China. I enjoyed re-reading this book, and this memorable couple will remain in my mind & heart for a long while. (I still want those pesky editing problems corrected).
Initially, I did't think I was going to enjoy this book or that I would even finish the book. I can't say I liked Bernadette (AKA Dottie) or Trent (AKA Richard) as they are first introduced in the book. However, eventually, as their personalities slowly began to emerge, coupled with strong character developments, I started to have a lot of respect for both of these characters. He was a white, privileged republican, one of the "haves" and she was a black democratic, disenfranchised "have not." Fireworks, anyone??
Trent's ultimate eye-opening experiences, including his chagrin at having to drive for over an hour to find Bernadette black hair products after her hair got wet (Trent said her hair looked like a chia pet) or what happened when they stopped at a mom and pop gas station during their Thanksgiving road trip was uproariously funny. When Bernadette told him she never would have stopped there because of that big ole confederate flag and what that flag represented for black people, Trent was floored —he got WOKE at that point, I guess.🙄🤣🤣🤣. He never knew! Once he became aware, though, his transformation is a thing of beauty.
In all, I was thoroughly engrossed in the story. I was totally wrong for prejudging the book after reading only a few pages. Now, I get why people liked this book--and Trent. Bernadette is the type of strong, intelligent heroine I enjoy reading about, although I simply detested her choice to become an escort to pay off her student loans (undergraduate and law school). Others have found less unsavory ways of paying off their student loans.
NB: I took points off for some editing problems and grammatical mistakes; however, by no means was the book rife with such errors, and they did not prevent me from enjoying this book.
Life is a beotch and then you die! Senator Trent Richardson wanted a sassy azz black woman who knows how to make a man lose control and boy did he find one in Bernadette aka Bernie/ Dottie McCoy. This woman did not let him get away with anything. On first meeting she just knew he was an older egotistical, misogynistic and racist southern azzhole who just irritated the hell out of her but she only have 5 dates with him and that was it, she'd never had to see him again, or so she thought. Their relationship was on fire from first meeting. He made Bernie feel things she'd never felt with a man before and she just turned the senator out. He fell in love with her but their differences of race background and political ideologies were just too extreme. It was not until the senator had to see what kind of life Bernie had to live did he began to see the error of his insensitivities towards other people. Bernie changed him without even trying. She could see that under all of his grufness, there was a good man underneath it all. A man who loved her enough to slay anything or anyone that would threaten her happiness, or threaten them as a family.
Xyla wrote a story that was full of explosive drama that kept my attention from beginning to end. I did not want to put my kindle down. I just love Trent and Bernadette's love. He just loved her so thoroughly, he was willing to give up politics for her and Jr. Portia was an excellent girlfriend that kept Bernie grounded and helped to understand that one just does not throw away love. Even though the couple was so different., they were able to work through them. In the end Love won out.... "and the greatest of these is love."
Not sure I can say I enjoyed any more than the last 10% of this story. Trent & Bernadette meet unconventionally based on sexual fetishes/escort service. Then add on top of that the political aspects of the story, and I felt angry with the things Trent & Bernadette were saying. Despite these issues, I was still intrigued by the storyline.
I think this book will garner mixed emotions and reviews.

There is more I disliked about this book than I liked. The sex wasn't just overly graphic and descriptive but was downright nasty. This goes beyond erotica, it borders on porn. I did not know the author wrote this type of erotica. If that's what you're looking for, that's fine. Even the negative reviews didn't indicate this book contained such erotic sex. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bought it. It's more than erotic romance. I almost returned the book for a refund. Also the book ends at 85% with almost 50% of it being the overly, descriptive nasty sex. The following note doesn't indicate the type of erotic sex this book contains: "Note: This book is a bit different than a normal Xyla Turner book. It is IR, BWWM, and HEA, but it's a bit darker and really sexy. If you're not easily offended, then this is for you." "A bit darker and sexy" doesn't warn you of the type of sex that is found in this book. The price of $4.99 was too much for what amounts to a novella. I didn't return it for a refund because I read it. I considered several times to stop reading it and return it for a refund. I wish I had before I completed the entire book.
There was too much going on with little clarity. I was not offended at the choice she made to become an escort to pay for her last year of law school. Given the little we knew of her background, it's not surprising she made that choice. However, I was disappointed that someone who held such a sense of justice didn't think about the immorality of her decision. Still, you have to walk in her same shoes before judging her decision.
Even with chapter headings, it was confusing who was talking. A lot of times voices switched in the middle of paragraphs - it went from Trent to Bernadete and back to Trent with the heading unchanged. There could have been more character development for both main characters. Their back stories were skimmed over. Fully developed backstory would have added to the story. There were rich veins left not mined. That's another big disappointment. The plot was extremely thin. Again rich viens left not mined.I
What did I like about the book? The premise was interesting but left unfulfilled. I loved the minor characters much more than I did Trent and Bernadette. As interesting as their stories could be, I won't read them because of the erotica in this book.
If you're not into overly descriptive, graphic nasty sex, don't read this book. Even If you're not easily offended, then this book may not be for you. Not offended by graphic descriptive sex, wait for it to go on sale. The length is deceptive and it's not worth $4.99.
Trent, Trent Trent! What can I say? The man made me angry, made me hot and bothered and then made me laugh all in the first chapter. He was one of those people who was raised in privilege and never had to think about how other people in the world lived. That is until he hires Bernie as his escort and she sets him straight!
To be a white conservative politician with strong views about minorities and things that concern us, he had an affinity for black women. He was single and didn’t date around, so he found it easier to hire someone to take care of his carnal needs.
Bernie was a law student in debt up to her neck. She needed extra money and took a job as an escort. At first her dates were just that- no sex. Then her monetary needs changed and she was forced to switch things up. Her very first date that included sex was with Trent. He insults her off the cuff and she tries to walk away. He wouldn’t let her leave because he really liked her.
What got me was he said the most offensive things, but did not realize what he was saying was something that would hurt other people. He lived with his head in the mud. Bernie got him together quickly.
Once she lit into him and called him a racist, he got very offended and defensive. Trent was a man who was trained from birth to think certain things and say certain things. He was sort of brainwashed by his father in a sense. The more time he spent with Bernie, the more his eyes opened to the real world.
By the time the main characters get their HEA, Trent is a new man and Bernie has made some changes as well. This book was compelling and so relevant to the times. Xyla has done it again!

"Trent" by Xyla Turner
My Thoughts....
What a read that will keep you on the edge of your seat will turning the pages to see what will happen next for these two Bernadette and Trent. This Republican vs Democratic [two definite opposites] story really turned out to quite a interesting read that was indeed solid and oh so very entertaining that really made sense as you read through the story. Definitely there chemistry did allow them to really see each other way more that was just beyond the surface. I loved the fact the Bernadette had just the right amount of sass and she knew how to handle Trent. By the end the reader gets a 'provoking story, with interesting characters, sexy and romantic engaging ending' with more to come.
Bernadette and Trent! Wooooooohoooo did this story take me for a ride and I truly enjoyed it. Dottie met Trent, or Richard as he liked to be known, while working as an escort to pay for law school. Trent is intense! Lol. Bernadette aka Bernie did not take any lip service from him and let him know it, verbally and physically, lol. Though Trent is a lot to take and I mean, truly a lot to take in, he loved Bernie fiercely and ferociously. He was and is an all, take charge kind of man, and he never gave up on her, on them. I just love these two together. This was my first read by Ms. Turner and definitely not my last. Very well written, with the right amount of angst and a HEA. 4.5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Now for Duncan's book!
So I can’t stand books where the conflict is paper thin and see thru. This book started off well it had be interested but right at about %50 the heroine just kept up her annoying behavior. Much of her attitude was unfounded and her friend had to set her straight repeatedly reminding her what we as the reader and even a blind person could see. I just could t get into her and she really messed up the book for me.
I started and stopped this book twice because I didn’t know if I could handle Trent. He seemed like a hillbilly at first and how that would translate into alpha male I did not know.
Well she did it. It wasn’t perfect and never will be but he was a bit believable. It was hot and entertaining.
I loved the storyline and the relationship between the two main characters. I can say the female character got on my nerves at times. I would recommend this book.
So mad at myself for letting this book sit on my Want to Read shelf for so long! The Republican aspect really had me wary but I wanted an alpha male hero and decided to pull the trigger. Trent delivered! He and Bernie were toxic at times but they surely complimented one another, even with the age difference. The love scenes??? 🥵 There were a pretty good amount of grammatical errors, which is frustrating to have to read through… but not enough that it tripped me up. Recommend!
Parts of this book. 1. S@x 2. Fighting 3. Chick keeps running Most if this is arguments. What made them worst is the FL kept getting triggered. She would work herself into a excuse to run. Early on the ML opened himself up and poured his heart to her and her immediate reaction was to turn her back on his pain. I know its not someone's responsibility to unpack another person's baggage. But girl could have had compassion. Even when her friend put it in perspective from a outside POV I though she was gonna be more reasonable. I really hate when the female demands the male to bend over backwards for her. Like her vag is a mind control device. That's not how real life works. And its not a message that should be put out in society.
This plot wasn't bad, though not very original. The heroine of the story (whose name I have already forgotten) is an escort. She needs to start taking on clients she can be "intimate" with the make more money for law school. Trent is kinda racist but actually not (this is kind of weird to me). They fall in love and face obstacles...blah blah blah. This book definitely could have used a good editor. There are typos and things that don't quite make sense, for example in one paragraph a man tells Trent not to talk about his fiancee, a couple of paragraphs later they are newlyweds. Not sure I will read the next book or other offerings from this author.
As a black woman, that's a somewhat difficult book to rate and to like. The sex part is amazingly hot and very well written. The racism part is a pill you will need a good amount of water to swallow. It's hard to believe that a 50 something-year-old, a politician on top of that, would be so oblivious to race matters. What world does he live in? Plus, can we really put all the blame for his behavior on a teenage romance? On a 14 Yo girl? I don't think so. But I Liked them both, I liked the way this book was written and I loved the sex scenes and that's why it has my 3,5 stars. I rolled my eyes more than 3 times so it couldn't be 4 stars. I will read the next of the series.
This book was definitely outside the norm of what I normally read. I've read books with IR couples, age gaps, and BWWM before. But never with politics thrown into the mix for even more opposition. The female lead wasn't as likeable as the male. And that's saying something, since at times he was just as intolerable as she was, if not more so! Overall it was an entertaining read with a few editing issues, which lowered my overall rating.
This story is okay. Trent and Bernadette are polar opposite that find common ground. He opens his eyes to underlying causes while they navigate a relationship in today's racial climate. I really didn't feel the connection between the characters, and truthfully, they both got on my nerves. However, it still provides a good premise that is inspiring.
Let me start by saying that I need some more of Trent, Bernie and Jr. This story wore me out. Love it!!! Xyla Turner is a master at storytelling. Thank you Xyla 🎃
Not sure if this is actually a spoiler. Better safe and sorry 🤷🏾♀️
It started off strong, but then hit a wall for me. Bernadette's back and forth, indecisiveness got on my nerves. Girl, either give the man a chance or move on. Needless to say, I loved Portia and her voice of reason.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Author tried to tackle a real social-racial issue but it didn't come across. The characters are childish and not very mature to be at that age. Seriously....running away in your 30s... ridiculous
This book was full of surprises. I started out not being sure about Trent. I still don't know about him, but he worked it out in the end. They definitely kept it interesting.
