Dearest Folks: Letters from a Missionary Wife and Mother

Rate this book
"If I had tried to tell the story of our mission experience by relying on memory, so much would have been lost. These letters are from the heart of a daughter, sister and friend."

In 1956, Sydney nurse Margaret Watts and her husband Horrie set out on the adventure of a lifetime: mission service in Vanuatu (then the New Hebrides), followed by further years serving on the island of Bougainville in the then-Territory of New Guinea. In these letters sent home to family in Australia, Margaret gives a thorough account of what daily life was like working as a missionary nurse in remote areas of the Pacific.

“This book has been an inspiration and an insight into one woman’s mission life. I finished reading it with tears in my eyes and heart, then wanted to read it all again.”
—Joy Butler, missionary wife and World Fourth Vice President, Women’s Christian Temperance

“This is a remarkable book about a remarkable couple. The frustrations, loneliness, joys and general life of a missionary family are recorded without rancour or self-pity. Instead, this book is redolent with the adventures and joys of being given the opportunity to serve as missionaries for Christ. This book is a ‘must read’ for anyone who seeks a glimpse of what real missionaries have done.”
—Dr John Hammond, retired missionary and educator

Margaret Watts is now retired and lives in the Lake Macquarie region of New South Wales, Australia. On their return to Australia, the Watts family continued in their service for the church, Horrie in departmental leadership and pastoral ministry, in which Marg could again support and also use her nursing experience. Marg and Horrie recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary and are actively involved in their local church, Avondale Memorial.

Robyn Priestley recently retired after teaching history at Avondale College of Higher Education in Cooranbong, New South Wales, Australia, since 1972.
