The chemical ruined her life. Suzette Valentine’s life is changed forever when she accidentally comes into contact with an experimental chemical. Chaos ensues when a series of deaths prove a little too close to home. Pressured to be a vigilante, she tosses off the comfortable in favor of a new, more dangerous life. Now as the Onyx Fox, she steps blindly into a strange world of genetic engineering, murder, and something far more nefarious. Old friends become powerful enemies, tainted by the chemical and an ancient evil that’s walked the earth since the beginning of mankind. Mysterious strangers with sinister pasts become her closest allies. All the while, a secret organization known as the Order of the Dragon seeks the chemical for their own wicked desires. Will Suzette’s innocence make her easy prey?
Goodness--this book has A LOT going on with a ton of characters to keep up with. However, the author did a great job keeping the storylines clear and intermingling the people in plausible ways. She also incorporated characters from the classics, updating them to our modern world without losing their essence from the stories of old (best I can tell, at least. Truthfully, I've not read some of their original stories). The biggest reason I downgraded it to 4-stars (I-really-liked-it) is that the book is not my preferred genre, and the storyline drifts into territory I'm not comfortable reading on a regular basis.
Several of the characters are immensely interesting, and part of me wants to read future books to find out more about them and how they come out of this classic good vs. evil story. I provide TWO WARNINGS to sensitive readers. First, the bad guys in the story are embroiled in what I would label a satanic cult, complete with many of the symbols, sacrifices, and practices. The author handles this well but also doesn't shy away from the truth of it. Second, as many characters are opposed to God, their behavior reflects their worldly or anti-God viewpoint. The book includes murder, adultery, drugs, and alcohol.
The Christian content is not overdone, although some characters go to church and occasionally pray throughout the story. Softly flowing just under the surface is a redemptive theme, though, and one of the primary characters struggles with receiving a gift from God that she's not sure she wants and is uncertain what He wants her to do with.
One final note, this book wraps up in a satisfactory way, HOWEVER, it also ends without tying up all the loose ends and with a bit of a cliffhanger, so more books are clearly planned but are not yet available.
Overall, this is a good, solid story from a debut author. If you like reading science fiction or edgier stories, this is a great book for you to try. If you have someone in your life that attends church but leans toward the outside of Christian thought or someone who lives a worldly life but is open to the Bible and its claims, this might be a good gift.
