The Roundabout

Rate this book
The Roundabout has given Earth one week to deliver to it the members of the Fifth House or face planetary destruction. In an abandoned city the size of a planet, and facing off against god-like opponents, this will be no simple task for our three groups of heroes.

Allin and Copper are captives of the four remaining members of the Fifth House. To fight them, they must first work together against the Roundabout.

Tyena is joined by a ghost, a treasure hunter, and the mind of her worst enemy inside a cat’s body. This unlikely group will need to navigate through and across the planet before they can even try to rescue Allin and do the Roundabout’s bidding.

Emperor Tumble’s first duty is to keep his citizens safe as they flee the Invasion of Pudlington. Saving the planet comes in at a distant second on his list of priorities.

Above all their heads hovers the fleet of Roundabout daggerships, waiting to see if Earth can save itself or must be annihilated.

Andy Goldman

Andy Goldman has been writing since he was a little kid bashing out stories on his typewriter. They were often incredibly silly firsthand accounts of the adventures of his Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Star Wars action figures. Fast forward thirty years and Andy is still playing with toys and telling stories, much to his delight. The typewriter, alas, did not survive.
One or two other things have changed in the interim, the most important being his marriage to a wonderful, supportive wife, and the introduction of two beautiful, intelligent, and spirited daughters who very much encourage Dad's toy-buying habit, especially when it comes to Lego.
Andy’s work is heavily influenced by growing up in the 80s and 90s, and mixes western SFF with manga and anime. If he had to list the ancestry of The Only City Left series, three works would loom large: Asimov’s Foundation series, the original Star Wars trilogy, and Studio Ghibli’s The Cat Returns.
Andy hopes readers enjoy adventuring in the fantastical worlds inside his head for years to come.

The last book in The Only City Left trilogy is out, and I snatched up a digital copy straight away! I've been following this series since it started, and couldn't wait to dig in.

Allin, Tyena, and Tumble are back to try to save the Earth from the epic cliffhanger of the second book. With a fleet of warships in orbit, they have been given a week to turn in fugitives who have been hiding on Earth.

The Only City Left started out with just Allin's point of view (POV), and The Fifth House added Tyena's. This final installment adds Tumble. You might think three 1st person POV's sounds like a lot, but each chapter clearly labelled whose head you were in, so there was no confusion. I was glad to see events through Tumble's eyes, and I think knowing what all three of them were up to was good, since leaving out any one of them would have left a gaping hole in the reader's understanding of events.

The pacing was excellent, as usual, with tons of action and intrigue. Nearly every scene ended with a cliffhanger, and I couldn't wait to pick up my ereader for the ride to and from work to see what happened next. Usually I'll alternate between reading and playing games on my phone, but ever since I started reading this one, it was all reading, all the time.

The only problem I had was that it was a long time since I read the first two books, so although I clearly remembered the main characters and major events, there were side characters I had no memory of. Even by the end of the book, I couldn't place where they'd joined the story, and I think this will be a series that I'll re-read. That's rare for me, as I'm not a fast reader, but these books are worth it.

Goldman is definitely on my "must buy" list after finishing this series. I hope he comes back to these characters at some point!

If you're looking for a new, complete series to read, I highly recommend this one.

The Roundabout was an apt title for the 3rd book in The Only City Left trilogy!

Andy brings the story full circle beautifully, meshing characters, timing their actions and resolving (for the moment at least) how everyone ends up at the end of the 3rd book.

I would love to see this story put to film. Or, how about a video game?!

And, oh, would I love my own Tumble!
