The acute repair unit of a local hospital have a long night treating mostly head injuries and fractures after a big train derailment. A tramp was found in the carnage but had no number to identify him so he was sent over to Dr. Johnny Lawlor in another department to be treated. To get things going, Lawlor decides to give him another number from a Mr. Singh who died a short while ago until a more appropriate number turns up.
Mr. Singh was a fat, old, Indian gentleman who died the previous week and this patient doesn't fit his ethnic origins.
This is against the law as Lawlor was almost caught once before by the Data Irregular Information Department but managed to wriggled out of it.
Dr. Rhulmann asks Dr. Johnny Lawlor if he wants to see a patient of his with acute head injuries (the same as his Mr. Singh). It's a chap called Nemeson and Dr. Rhulmann feels Dr. Johnny Lawlor should know him. He shows him snapshots in which certain people are circled with the word 'eliminate'. In one of the other pictures Johnny Lawlor sees himself in a wedding picture. It is then he realises that he knows these people - it's Guy Luscombe marrying Barbara where he was the best man. The two people circled to be eliminated are Barbara's parents. Nemeson's number is 63NEM/3O582/M93D which Rhulmann gives to Lawlor.
Rhulmann overhears that Lawlor is treating a patient called Singh. He could have sworn Singh died a week ago and asks Lawlor if he could see him but Lawlor puts him off.
Lawlor decides to investigate the matter further. Though he has lost touch with the Luscombes, he manages to find their number and gives them a call. Guy tells him that Barbara's mum died about 5 years ago. It was all rather upsetting with her father disappearing, too. Lawlor takes up Guy's offer to spend the weekend with them which will allow him to probe further into this mystery.
