I am really enjoying this cozy paranormal mystery series by Rebecca Regnier. Marzie, as a reporter, has another suspicious death to investigate in Widow's Bay, MI. With the help of Georgie, Faith, Tatum and The Crones she also has to learn how to harness her new magic powers. The mystery was quickly paced and there was just enough humor to keep the plot light. On to the next one in the series.
'Coven Mitt' took a little longer to get going than 'Resting Witch Face', the first book in the series but it picked up quickly after the first death.
This is pure 'make 'em laugh, make 'em smile, keep 'em guessing' storytelling. It made me laugh several times and never had me reaching for the fast forward button.
The tone is light but that doesn't prevent the action scenes from being tense or diminish the pull of the mystery around who killed whom and why.
This time around I particularly enjoyed Agnes, Marzie's cat and familiar who talks to her telepathically, choosing the colours for the house renovation (she has perfect taste) while warning Marzie to keep her hound (the werewolf contractor) under control.
I liked the way the pieces that solved the murder mystery gradually clicked into place (although I had to look up Popsockets and I still don't see the appeal). I loved the idea of racing outhouses down Main Street, especially when they're carried at speed by werebears. Then there was the slightly confused but still dangerous rogue vampire known mostly as NorthFace because of the jacket he wears.
The need to build a large coven to deal with an external threat suggests that there'll be some exciting action in future books.
I could have done without the "Which sexy supernatural should I hook up with, the lead vampire with the French name, the sombre manner and no sense of humour or the alpha werewolf who laughs at my jokes, is good with kids/pups and is handy around the house?' It was amusing but a little tiresome.
Still, I'll be reading the next book in the series: 'Late Broomers' when I'm in need of another comfort read.
I read lots of paranormal mysteries, and this one breaks the mold, adding in a reporter's instincts, a mid-life change (dump cheating hubby and trade up with vampire and werewolf.) I chuckled aloud several times which is very rare. The first one of these "Resting Witch Face" was good, but this one is better so keep reading!
I like this cozy mystery series with witches, vampires, werewolves and others, there’s always a good murder and funny parts and you can’t go wrong with a talking cat named Agnes!
I stopped reading about 20-25% into this book, when the author introduces characters she repeatedly refers to as "g-----s" (ethnic slur for Romani people). Lazy character building based on a bigoted term that has no place in contemporary fiction.
Marzie is enjoying her job as the report (only one) for an inline newspaper. she enjoys the freedom from micro-management and presents her stories for the day with an out-0f town boss. She has to change that plan when something pops up, like a murder or something else! She is also juggling the interest of a"silver fox" vampire and a hunk of a wolf shifter. Tough choices for a recent divorcee. And she helps recruit more witches to fill in her coven. Things are going to get interesting!
I really enjoyed this second book in the series and have already down-loaded #3.

Coven Mitt by Rebecca Regnier is a fun, fast-paced paranormal cozy mystery that leans hard into humor, community, and supernatural chaos—in the best way possible. Returning to Widow’s Bay felt like slipping back into a familiar, delightfully weird small town where vampires roam, witches are learning the ropes (and battling hot flashes), and danger is always just around the corner.
Marzie Nowak continues to be an engaging and relatable lead. Juggling her role as the town’s only reporter, a suspicious murder, a growing vampire problem, and a brand-new coven keeps the story moving at a brisk pace. The mystery surrounding the murdered farmer is solid, with plenty of suspects and red herrings to keep things interesting, even as the paranormal elements ramp up.
One of the highlights of this installment is the expanded focus on the coven itself. The addition of The Crones and their old-school magical wisdom adds depth and plenty of laughs, especially as the newer witches try to figure out spells, teamwork, and their own powers. Agnes the snarky cat once again steals scenes, and the banter throughout the book is sharp and entertaining.
While some plot threads feel a bit crowded at times—with vampires, witches, werewolves, and home renovations all competing for attention—the humor and charm carry the story through. Fans of cozy mysteries with a supernatural twist, strong female friendships, and plenty of sass will find a lot to enjoy here.
Coven Mitt is a playful and engaging sequel that builds nicely on the world of Widow’s Bay and leaves me eager to see what magical trouble comes next.
If you are friend of Renee George's I believe you could become a fan of Rebecca Regnier. Renee brings a host of characters that will keep you guessing as to what they'll do next. She brings mystery, murder, Mayhem and talking pets or should I just say one pet Agnes.
In Willow Bay you will get a mix of witches, shifters in the form of bears and wolves and let's not forget vampires too along with a host of others still appearing in this little community.
In book 2 Marzie is still adjusting to moving back to her hometown of Widows Bay and getting used to the fact that she has witch powers. Don't get me wrong Marzie has issues acknowledging magic because she's lived away for over twenty years.
She now has to contend with Grady the werewolf or the more politically correct term wolf shifter or Stephen the local vampire who rules over the selection of magical creatures now living in the town.
We also can't forget the old crones the ladies of the DLC who provide the superior magic to keep all protected within the borders of the town. You will enjoy reading about all these characters some will keep you in stitches some will have you drooling but overall it's a very well-written story to spike the reader's imagination and the ability to solve crime.
I am seriously looking forward to the next book in this series
Story: this one got a bit ridiculous, the mother and the baby? PLEASE!!!!! I would have sent my mother to hell, freaking crazy B***. I had so great expectations for this series but if this is what we are going to get....not sure I will enjoy it much. I like quirky but not borderline ridiculous and lazyly written. A lot of repetition trying to explain the previous book. In the first book the MC acts like a mature woman but in this one she seems to have a change in personality because she acts like a spoiled brat.....news are more important than your own life? Or you don't care to be endangered because someone will come to save you? I really disliked her in this book, super annoying, careless, insecure and horny like a teen, therefore, repulsive personality. She keeps saying she is not ready for a relationship but she is kissing people left and right who makes her a cock-teasing slut. Playing with feelings is NOT a positive message. If you are not ready, put those rules down clearly. If all you want is sex, then also put it down clearly but don't be a teaser then say is not want you want when you are flirting around. Hopefully, the next book is better, if not, planning to drop the series because what I liked in the first book completely disappeared in the second one. Onto the next adventure, Happy Readings!!!
A police scanner sends Marzie to a rural pond, and a nearly submerged vehicle. Unfortunately there is a man's body in the driver's seat. It's only been a few months since she moved back to her home town, but Window's Bay is keeping Marzie busy. She is remodeling the downstairs of her home, and her snarky feline is very exacting in her design suggestions. A malicious individual is causing problems for her friends mayoral campaign. A muder to solve. Her attraction to two men, and a threat from an unknown source is plenty to keep her busy. However, Marzie and her friends will need to expand their coven in an effort to keep evil from entering their town. I loved this book! There is a diverse cast of characters that are fascinating, sometimes laugh out loud funny. Interesting, and unexpected twists in the plot, make this a must read mystery. Fantastic book, I loved it!
I am voluntarily leaving an honest and non-incentivized review of this ARC.
A fabulous read. Murder, shifters, vampires, shenanigans and underhand dealings. Okay there where a few proofing errors but these could easily be ignored. Plus the growth of the characters and their use of magic is well worth a read. When a call is made over the police frequency of divers needed at a pond, she rushes over to take a look. A truck and driver are pulled from the depths. Was the driver killed or did he suffer a heart attack? Plus someone is spreading rumours that have the women up in arms. Is this because of the local election? Who is behind it? As she investigates she finds that it puts her in the spotlight and results in a vampire attack. The more she learns the more it becomes obvious that the death was murder and that the whole community is at risk. Can the women fight back? Can they find the killer? Can Agnes (her cat) get the renovations done exactly as she wants them?
Book two in this wonderful series. If you are into a funny magical story about witches and other super naturals this is your book to read.
Marzie has come back in town in the first book and she is there to stay in the second book. She now works as an online journalist and solving mysteries too. There is something strange about the death of old Earl and Marzie can't stop going deeper and deeper. She finds out more and more and meets some new super naturals on the way.
At home she is not only under the protection of a sexy vampire, but also of a hot werewolf. Grady the werewolf is also redoing her house for her. Or for her, actually her cat is in charge and that cat has humor!
Just a great read again. I liked how the friendship saves them a few times and how the coven is bigger at the end of this story. I can't wait to read more in this series.
You can read this book as a stand alone, but why would you? The first book is great to read too!
Rebecca Regnier showed up this week as a guest author for our Facebook group PWF (Paranormal Women Fiction). Her first book on this series was free and I ended up downloading it. It was so good, I bought the rest of the books and I just finished book 2.
Coven Mitt takes us back to Widow’s Bay and The Crones trying their best to train the new coven. This book focuses on Marzie’s journey to understand the Yooper Naturals while she balances a house renovation, her new job at Your U.P. News, another murder case and a rogue vampire. There are other side stories that, I guess, we will know more in other installments. However, the story is fast, full of action, and all the sarcasm you can have in the form of Agnes, Marzie’s fashionista cat.
Yule Live the Festivals, magic and hot supernaturals
"A dead body, corporate intrigue, a fight over natural resources, a protest, and a curse. This was all before lunch."
Lead character Marzie, widowed reporter and midlife mother with kids off to college has returned to her home town of Widow's Bay to work as an online news reporter and so far, between Yule festival planning, the crime and the hot shifters and vampires, she's got her hands full.
She's now also accepted that she's a latent witch, one of a number in the old town, and the job of these ladies of the DLC is to protect the town's inhabitants and keep the peace.
The political rivalry between Candy and Ridge continues amidst the increased tourism and the residents competing for the title of "fastest crapper in the north."
Lots of humour, fun, danger and potential in this series.
This is one of the best witch series I have ever read. Marzie is finally starting to believe and have an ideal of what her purpose is going to be in Widow's Bay. She's a damn good reporter also. She was investigating and figured out before the police that the accident was murder, and continued her way to who done it. The other thing in her life is dating. Do she go team vampire or team wolf. This part of her life is going to be fun and I can't wait to see what is going to happen. Now she and her friends have to build their coven up and train because there is a fight coming and they need to be prepared. I can't wait for the next book. I absolutely loved this one. I voluntarily agreed to review this book. My review is my own honest opinion.
I had been looking for a new series and I found it! I love witchy/paranormal books and this author has a unique take on it. Some things are common but many elements are unique. This excellent writing with humor, a bit of mystery and a good engaging storyline. I did read read Resting Witch Face (great title btw) first as it is first in this series and would recommend that to other readers. I recommend this book and look forward to the next one. Hey, I recommend the whole series even though I've only read the first two. It's good writing and very entertaining (something sorely needed these days) and am so grateful to this writer and many others who have their books as part of KU.
Oh yes, book 2 in the series is much tighter with more energy and plot twists; this is much better than book 1 and what a relief that the pets have a doggy door to the backyard. I like the romantic tension about the dilemma of dating either an elegant, super rich vampire who is romantically gallant but low on humor or the casual, funny, family oriented wolf shifter with a talent for home remodeling...what a nice problem to have!
A very enjoyable read, I particularly like Marzie’s role as a reporter; her work is so well described it makes me feel like I’m breathlessly waiting with her to get the first scoop on the latest scandal. The new coven is the icing on the cake.
I liked the story, but can't say I enjoyed the read. At first it was mostly the love triangle putting me off. I loathe them in general, but this one is extra weird and creepy or rather Brule is. In his interactions, but especially considering his history with her ancestors, predecessors. It almost feels a bit incestous. Yuck! Loved Grady and Crad though, but not enough to continue the story.
Plus there's just sooo much explaining, at length and in duplicate at least. The chopped up sentences are still a major issue. Some people throw random darts at a map, she throws random punctuation at her writing. And then in the end the resolution of the actual case was a bit too overly convenient.
Marzie is back for another adventure. I really enjoy that Marzie is not some fresh faced youngster. She has life behind her, a set of friends that she is renewing bonds with, a new job that she is enthusiastically pursing. Oh, and a murder to report on. The story was fun and things kept buzzing along. There was a good amount of zippy humor and upbeat feeling to the entire story.
While this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone. The first should be read if you best want to understand how Marzie ended up juggling new coven, being back in the UP, new job and tackling all that comes with it.
Two plot lines. One rogue vampire preying on the innocent. One dead grandfather of one of the new Widow's Bay witches. Something evil this way comes, so the crones must get the younger witches up to snuff. I am really liking how this series is coming along. I like the mix of old with middle aged. In Widow's Bay, witches start to strengthen in power when they reach forty, single or widowed, with no or grown children. The crones are near 100 years old. And they are running out of time to teach the generation that will take over to protect their town. The gate is open and paranormal s are flooding in. Most belong there, but some, like the rogue vampire, must be dealt with.
Coven Mitt is Rebecca Regnier's second installment in her Widow's Bay Series. Laughter and best buddies are all fun and games, until a rogue vampire is going around snacking on people and another, ancient vampire wants to take over the town. According to the remaining 3 DLC, the Distinguished Ladies Club needs a new influx of numbers and fast. Thirteen witches to be exact. Where are the small gang supposed to rustle up more witches? To complicate matters further, there has been another suspicious death. And no one can explain the low water levels at the murder site. Marzie has more than enough to keep her busy, but to keep her out of trouble--never!
I really enjoy the storyline with this series. It's entertaining and a bit quirky. It's basically the usual witches, vampires and shifters story. The point of view and different setting makes it unique. Usually is all "southern vamps". However, the writing and grammatical errors are annoying. This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I find myself correcting mistakes as I read these books. I googled the author, she is an award winning writer which very much surprised me. I will continue reading these because I've already started the series and enjoy the storyline.
What I enjoyed about this book was the fact that Marzie resolves one problem faced by the main characters in this series, but a new foe is also introduced that proves to be bigger and badder than what they’ve dealt with previously. There’s a hint of romance and rivalry between Brule and Grady that is sure to blow up at some point. I feel like this book was better edited than the first, but it still has some grammatical and spelling mistakes. Again, I still want to continue to read and find out what happens to Marzie and her friends.
It’s an ok book and I liked book 1 enough to listen to book 2 but Marcie constantly endangering herself by revealing what she knows to the bad guys is ridiculous. For a seasoned reporter she is slow on the uptake. She constantly seems baffled by ubernaturals being in Widows Bay even though she knows it’s real. Girl get over it already and go with the flow.
The story takes too long to get to the point. The plot doesn’t come together until chapter 18 and there are 22 chapters. Cozy murders are not my thing but this was cute but it could be so much more.
Fun entertaining cozy mystery. A woman moves back to her hometown to discover that she has powers she didn't realize. She and her friends learn that their community needs them and their powers. The women have to learn their responsibilities and abilities. Entertaining, well-written, a good light read. I highly recommend you read these in order.
Marzie has come to terms that she and her friends are witches and so are her Aunt Dorothy and the two remaining members of the DLC, one of her friends Candy is running for Mayor and unfounded rumours are being heard around town so they need to find out who is behind them, so along with a death, the Yule festival and getting her home remodeled Marzie has many leads to follow.
Wonderful series with a variety of characters. The series takes place in the UP of Michigan where the witches are single, empty nesters who are trying to manage their hot flashes and learn what it means to be a witch that is descendant from the witches in Salem and how to protect the other supernaturals that have come home to Widows Bay. The humor is snarky and the stories keep your attention! Love this series!
This book got 5 stars mainly because of the characters. The characters are very well developed and a more likable kooky bunch can not be found elsewhere. The plot is strong and the pacing is just right. Not too heavy on the romantic stuff, which I like, because the focus is on the strong independent women of Widows Bay. They are quite endearing. Looking forward to more by this author.
The town is proving to be interesting and entertaining. The MC and her friends are perhaps not the most compelling characters, but they are growing on me. The older ladies are definitely more entertaining at this point. The storyline is building in such a way that I definitely want to know what is going to happen next. The "travelers" plot line was rather confusing, but perhaps that will be explained down the road.
Marzie is renovating her home with her handsome werewolf contractor who flirts shamelessly. She is also rebuilding her friendships with friends she left to pursue her career. Her aunt and the older coven members are mentoring the new group and hoping to grow the coven. Mysteries seem to keep the town busy and crime rates are up. I love how the older witches help support their younger counterparts.
