I've enjoyed the second volume of Ranmaru Zariya's Coyote.

The m/m Romeo-and-Juliet storyline, set in a dystopian reality and with strong injections of graphic sex and violence, may not be very original but it's conducted in a solid and engaging manner.

The drawing style is beautiful, realistic and dreamy in equal measure and I love the eerie recreation of London, which is at the same time recognisable and uncanny.

Looking forward to reading volume 3!

there's something exquisite about a forbidden romance between a pair where they belong to opposing families or groups and should be at each other's throat. instead, they fell in love 😩

Can't say much without spoiling Coyote, Vol. 1, but I enjoyed this volume even more than the first. Things get a lot more intense, the obstacles the characters are facing become more prominent.

Coyote finds out who Joshua really is and he feels betrayed ‘cause even if he says he has nothing to do with his family, truth is he was following him and we still don’t know quite sure why.

It is a bit sad to see that they feel so empty without the other. Joshua repeatedly says he’s in love with Coyote, but if I’m being honest, I think that what he feels is more a fixation rather than love. They’ve sex so they do feel attracted to each other, but real love takes more than just fucking each other.

Still, in this volume we get a glance of their past story and I feel like none of them truly fit in their own groups, whether they’re human or werewolves.

I really want to see what happens in the next volume ‘cause this manga is quite interesting, and well, the artwork is just SUPERB even if the story has lacks a few things to be perfect.

After everything that happened, Coyote finds himself in a tough position and sooner or later he must choose between love and family... the thing is Marleen won't give up on Coyote that easy (as he should).

Shit is about to go down!

I’m absolutely LIVING for the angst in this. I wanted drama, and I’m getting drama. We love to see it.

In this volume Joshua and Coyote’s relationship is in a much more tense place, and it makes my heart ache in the best way possible. The tension between them isn’t exactly surprising or unique, but it’s exactly what I wanted. I love to see this kind of hurting and yearning 💖

This volume was not nearly as horny as the first one, but it still delivered. I’m truly so happy I started reading this series.

THE DRAMAAAAA. ah i knew it would be delicious!! It makes me wonder how and if things could have been different if he'd fessed up like he'd originally planned to. This volume was more serious and focused more on the plot of the wolves and the gallands (sp?) but we also get done slice so i have no complaints. We also learn more about the tragic events that happened 70 years ago and how many deaths there have been on both sides, creating a cycle of violence. Also, i really like that Allen guy, he's cute, stay safe my dude

Well after this second installment I guess I will be continuing on. It has potential. And I wanted to see if the star crossed lovers can overcome the odds. Plus why is Josh so gorgeous and tortured???

3.5/5

1) Coyote, Vol. 1 ★★★★

I didn’t like this volume as much as the first one, mostly because the bulk of this book focuses on plot and doesn’t have the two leads together. But how it ends gives me hope for the third volume so I will absolutely be finishing off this very fun series

Ех, тази класическа драма, в която някой не може да сподели трудна истина... Вечен евъргрийн, и още как.

Definitely better than the last one! It's getting exciting and I love the art!

The series does suffer though from the tired old seme/uke cliche characteristic of yaoi, and I'm not sure if the author has a great understanding of how gay sex works. I'll still be reading the next one of course, but you know, would be nice if things were more adapted to a modern taste.

Re-Read Review (July 20th, 2023):

This series is still nicely holding up. There weren't any new additional problems beyond the scene with Herma. Their role is definitely questionable as they're the only BL intersex character I know of (and I don't see a lot of intersex rep). Zariya excels with the tension here as Coyote and Marleen now start to deal with the repercussions of their relationship. They find out the truth about each other, water boils over in an over-the-top way (which I still enjoyed), and some of the side characters start to get their roles established in the plot.

Even with the drama, the angst doesn't feel as overblown as it could be. Misunderstandings can often be handled poorly in the media I've seen, but the ones here are perfectly reasonable given the dynamic between the leads and Marleen not taking the opportunity to tell Coyote a vital piece of his past. He recognizes this and knows there isn't an excuse he can use. The ending only adds an additional layer. Despite where they are now, Coyote and Marleen are still linked together.

First Read Review (April 12th, 2021):

Although consent could be acknowledged more than it is in this series, Zariya builds the tension in Coyote's second volume by framing it around Coyote and Marleen dealing with the information they've learned about the other. The conflict is overdramatic and pulpy, and the ending only makes me curious about what will happen next. Will there be death? Will there be drama? The latter's definitely guaranteed.

*Original Review 7/15/2021*
The second volume is much better. This kind of plot and conflict is interesting to me despite being a pretty common one. Who cares though! Tropes are tropes for a reason.

And god the ART. The way the werewolf teeth are drawn are SO GOOD. Especially the panel of Coyote yelling on the roof. That panel made me feel things. I loved it so much. And the way Marlene’s hair is drawn is gorgeous. Plus Herma? Their lashes and eyes were drawn so beautifully. Amazing. I don’t have the words to scream about how much I love it.

I’m looking forward to everything coming to a head in the next volume. I hope its juicy.

So much drama in this volume! Finally all secrets are out in the open. So much angst! Then the book ended on a cliffhanger and unfortunately, per a conversation on Twitter, the American publisher, SuBLime, was completely unaware that volume 3 is releasing in Japan in mere days. So it's going to be a very, very long wait before I get to continue this series.
