Axel’s parents are visiting for the holiday and Pepper wants things to go smoothly. But when his mom insults the town Scrooge things turn rocky fast.
Worse, when the town Scrooge is murdered, fingers quickly point to Axel’s mom. Now it’s up to Axel and Pepper to find the real murderer before his mom winds up paying the price for a crime she didn’t commit.
Can Pepper and Axel save the day or will the magical season of Christmas turn into the deadliest ever known to Magnolia Cove?
Hey, I’m Amy, I write books for folks who crave laugh-out-loud paranormal mysteries. I help bring humor into readers’ lives. I’ve got a Pharm D in pharmacy, a BA in Creative Writing and a Masters in Life. And when I’m not writing or chasing around two small children (one of which is four going on thirteen), I can be found antique shopping for a great deal, getting my roots touched up (because that’s an every four week job) and figuring out when I can get back to Disney World. If you’re dying to know more about my wacky life, here are three things you don’t know about me. —In college I spent a semester at Marvel Comics working in the X-Men office. —I worked at Carnegie Hall. —I grew up in a barbecue restaurant—literally. My parents owned one. If you want to reach out to me—and I love to hear from readers—you can email me at amyboylesauthor@gmail.com. Happy reading!
This is such a great series. I love the characters from Pepper and Axel to the cousins and Grandma and all the side characters including a cat and a dragon. The story line is really page turning and though I guessed who the murderer was it was a quick fun and easy read. A really feel good book.
This is my favorite in the series so far. I loved the story and how the celebrate Christmas without actually celebrating Christmas (in everything but name only). I enjoyed getting to know Axel’s parents and the surprise twist at the end. Looking forward to the next!
What do you do when a weather spell has been placed on your Alabama town and the temperature just keeps dropping? Most times if you live in Ala. or Ga. and it snows, you stay inside cuz no one down here know how to drive in the snow, even just a dusting. You get to meet Axel’s parents, Betty Craple’s magic is broken, and you have a murder to solve all in the few days before Christmas. Oh, I forgot to mention the wishing tree! Some wishes come true…. Always interesting with the Sweet Tea Witches. 😍
"Southern Magic Christmas" is book eight in the "Sweet Tea Witches Mysteries" series by Amy Boyles. Pepper has the weight of her families magic on her shoulders. She is getting to meet Axel's parents when something horrible happens. She knows she needs to figure out who did the murder before the wrong person gets arrested. My favorite scene is when a clue finally clicked for Pepper, and she was able to figure things out. I also liked the wishing scene at the end. This series has been so fun to read, and I know I will read more.
It’s Christmas in Magnolia Cove, Alabama and brrr the temp is lowering a bit too quickly.
I suppose it’s good writing that this one and the past 2 books have driven me crazy for Pepper to figure out something that is right in front of her face. I couldn’t put the book down until she got it. It actually causes me a lot of anxiety and sometimes I want to skip ahead to the answer and then go back to where I left off just so I can relax. But so far I haven’t done that. Proud of me? Lol.
In this read I was screaming in my head for Pepper to figure out what was blatantly obvious. To me, anyway. I’d known about the “key” since about 10% through the book, yet it took Pepper nearly the entire book (89% through) to finally have an “Aha!” moment! Geez! Ok, she is a newer witch, but that won’t be an excuse forever. Eventually she’ll be a witch long enough to know better.
However, she did figure everything out including the fire within and how to use it to her advantage. It was getting colder all the time in Magnolia Cove, ya’all! And Axel’s mom, Karen was found standing over a body with a knife in her hand. Oh dear. Although we know Axel’s momma would never kill anyone, it sure did look sus.
And then the wraiths wanted to take Karen away forever because the victim’s husband said to do so. Luckily the wraith was fought off temporarily by someone whose strength is bigger than she thought as that gave Karen and Pepper more time to figure things out.
Oh and I was thinking about something. Pepper now knows that Amelia and Cordelia are part genie, so they can possibly grant wishes yet the girls don’t know this of themselves. Betty also knows. So anyway, every time one of the girls says “wish” in a sentence, Pepper waits to see if the wish comes true. For instance, Amelia said, “Sometimes I wish I lived in a house as big as the Mobley’s.” Pepper instantly held her breath waiting to see if anything would happen. The thing is, don’t genies grant OTHER people’s wishes? They don’t grant their own, right? Plus, Amelia didn’t actually wish. She didn’t say, “I wish a I lived in a house as…” No, Amelia said that sometimes she wished…
Something to think about.
The last we we read about is a wish or two coming true and then a couple of folks just entering town. Those folks will definitely be in the next book.
And even if not in the next book, a Christmas gift that Pepper got for Axel will definitely be brought up in a book soon, because it’s pretty major and could solve Axel’s biggest concern.
Next in the Sweet Tea Witch Mysteries is book 9 of 28: “Southern Potions”
Christmas time in Magnolia Cove really is the most special time of year, but is it special because of the magic of the chaos?! This book was so much fun, so much fun that I ate it up in one day. It’s finally Christmas time in Magnolia Cove and we have got A LOT going on. Axel and Pepper are back to being our number one couple (thank goodness, book seven with them a part really broke my heart). Betty is her normal crazy self, until something terrible happens. Amelia and Cordelia are joined by their mothers during the holidays. But, of course we experience a murder! One of the women in Magnolia Cove who is always eager to show off during the holiday house tour is found murdered! Now the list of who it could be is longer than you’d think and it really does take the entire book to whittle down the suspects. Another super fun part of book eight is meeting Axel’s parents. In every book we learn or are introduced to more people that enrich the characters and lives of Magnolia Cove. At the very end we meet Amelia and Cordelia’s fathers, with that being said and me not wanting to spoil anything let me stop right here! Book eight is amazing because we have a lot going on, more than just one murder! I love how deeply entrenched by book eight you become in the happenings and citizens of Magnolia Cove! It can only get sweeter from here that’s for sure! Now onto book nine!
Good read but she was really slow to connect the dots
Another winner. Just frustrating that it took her so long to connect everything. Well written, well visualised and loved the way the characters are exploring new facets of their power and relationships. Betty's nemesis is on fine form as she tries to take on the family however when she is found dead on the Christmas house tour it is Axel's visiting mother that is accused of murder. Now she starts looking into who would do such a thing as she knows the woman is innocent. Together she and Axel try to question who might have cause. Was it the constant fights she picked with people? Why does her dog keep escaping to their house. Then Betty's magic goes on the fritz and the weather gets colder and colder. Without Betty's magic the whole community is at risk and the dead woman's husband has called in the prison wraiths. As things get more dire she has to take on the magic that will keep the community safe - the Heart of the Fire. Throw in a ghost, a freezing spell, fighting the wraiths and finally bring the killer to book. Is it possible she can win and restore the community?
It wouldn’t be a holiday in Magnolia Grove without a little mischief, and this time Christmas comes with yet another murder to unravel. When a body turns up, Pepper and her family find themselves pulled right back into the chaos. What makes this installment especially fun is the way it blends a murder mystery with a festive twist, keeping the stakes high while still sprinkling in that seasonal magic.
As if a killer on the loose weren’t enough, the town is also dealing with a mysterious cold spell that threatens to dampen the holiday cheer. Between laughter, mayhem, and a dash of holiday spirit, Pepper and her crew have to race against time to solve both mysteries before Christmas is ruined. While these stories are quick, chaotic, and full of wild antics, each one also builds on the overarching plot of the series. I love watching the characters grow with every installment—it makes the fun, fast-paced mysteries even more rewarding.

Can Pepper and Axel save the day or will the magical season of Christmas turn into the deadliest ever known to Magnolia Cove?
Christmas should be a fairly nice season but for Magnolia Cove it could end up being the last season they ever have. Axel's mother shows up (which Pepper is rather nervous about, admittedly) but then there is a murder, a candy cane smell run amok, a dog that cannot talk to Pepper but should be able to, an arrest of an innocent person, a possible freezing-to-death of everyone scenario, a snowman whose hat may grant wishes, Betty losing her powers, a magical fire that Pepper must learn to bond with and wraith creatures which take justice (or supposed justice) into their own hands.
That's a heck of a lot going on and it all weaves together to make this one of the best books in the series.
This is an entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Pepper done is a witch who lives in a small southern magical town. She runs the local familiar shop. She lives with her grandmother her two cousins and her boyfriend is a local private eye. Pepper and her friends always seem to find a way into helping solve local mysteries crimes murders etc. There’s always something going on in a little magical town. Read on and follow the adventures of pepper done and her family and friends adventures in magic and mischief.
With Christmas approaching and Axel back in town, his parents come to visit. Shortly after they arrive, someone kills the town Scrooge, and the primary suspect is Axel's mom.
This Witch & Wizard Mystery is spectacular. As usual, the main character's self-doubt plays an extensive role in the story. Similarly, her magic and sleuthing skills dramatically improve as she brings the doubt under her control. How she deals with the guilty party is poetic. The end is remarkable.
It's Christmas in Magnolia Cove, but all is NOT merry and bright. This well-crafted mystery includes two spells that connect, two more occurrences that may be spells and connected, a murder at the heart of it all...and a heart that could be the solution! Meanwhile, Pepper has to navigate getting to know Axel's parents while keeping one of them out of prison, what to gift the boyfriend who doesn't want to give you anything, and, you know, saving Christmas! This story has real HEART and enough surprises to keep the reader engaged from start to finish.
This is one of the type of books in which the author has the main character speaking directly to the presumed readers. In my opinion, this is a very annoying affectation. Add to that the over-abundance of "y'all"s in those comments directed to the readers. Quite off-putting. Really reduced my enjoyment of the book. Maybe Southerner's really use the word as often as these characters do, but I feel as if it just shoving the "Southernness" of the story down my throat. I've not read any of the rest of the series, and I'm going to try another to see whether it all grows on me.
2.5 stars- Kind of fun reading about christmas. It's getting to be really annoying when Pepper's like "Oh, but i can't use my powers and I don't want to learn!" Like come onnnn just starttttt. Anyways I guessed the twist again- with Ellis Mobley murdering his wife. That stone thing being his motive was a little too out of left field but I guess he had to have some sort of motive. I feel like because Pepper's met Axel's parents and stuff now they're gonna end up together forever which is kinda sad because personally I ship Rufus and Pepper.

I’m not usually interested in magical stories but this one caught my ye and I really enjoyed it! Plenty of southern “Y’all’s” and some humor, mixed with a death and bitingly cold Christmas weather, and a mystery to solve, along with the help of a cute dog named Arsenic ! Pepper and her boyfriend Axel have their work cut out for them, especially since Betty’s magic sees to be broken and her spells going awry! I received a free copy of this book and write this review voluntarily.
Xmas comes to Magnolia Cove. Axel gives Pepper a beautiful locket for protection and Pepper gives him a set of leather bucklers with potential, or so she hopes.
But all of that happens in the final few pages. First Pepper meets Axel's parents, an elemental witchy mother and a werewolf daddy. Mama is pretty granola, Dad pretty much a cipher.
Xmas chaos erupts, as Betty's magic goes on the blink, Arsenal still won't talk, and why is it so cold outside?
A wish withheld and a wish granted. Have to go on to Book #9 to learn witch is witch (y'see what I did there?).
Everyone is getting ready Christmas. The three cousin go on the Christmas house tour and find Cookie dead in the kitchen. Axel's parents are in town to meet Pepper for Christmas. Garrick arrests Karen for murder. Betty's make her annal candy canes for the houses and something goes wrong then the weather become really cold. Pepper and Axel try to figure out who the killer is and how to unfreeze the town. Funny story and characters loved how things kept going wrong.
I'm enjoying the series and in this one Pepper gains a little more confidence doing magic. I like the family dynamic between Betty and the cousins although I still don't get why Carmen isn't more involved if she's their cousin as well. This story involved Betty's magic going wonky and Pepper stepped in to help. The murder mystery wasn't that tricky to figure out but it was supplemented by Axel's mother being accused so we got to see the interaction between Axel's family and Pepper getting to know them. Enjoyable read.
This was a pretty fun read. I wasn't sure with the introduction of Axel's parents, but it was nice to see how they handle life with the werewolf transformations. Some of the bonding time with Karen and Pepper were odd but overall I like them together.
The mystery was a little more obvious in this one. I don't quite understand why Betty's powers went haywire, but overall pretty fun. I'm excited for the next book. Seems fun.
Christmas in Magnolia Cove made me drool to go see this town and meet the characters.
The zany comments and wild actions will keep you on the edge of your seat during this Christmas season.
Pepper and her family and the newly returned Axel are kept busy and no o won’t say why. Remember, I don’t give spoilers but I will say the entertainment abounds.
4.0 I have a like-dislike with this series. I really like the town and most of the characters, but I am not super fond of Pepper the main character. Some of her reactions seem super childish and unrealistic. I know this town and the magic within it is "made up", but regular everyday relationship interactions tend to be awkward and unrealistic at times. But I have very intention (at this point) of completing the series.
When Axel comes home for Christmas to meet Pepper for the first time. The meanest witch in town has her RV towed off because they had the nerve to park in the street close to her house. Whitchypoo is later killed and Axel's mom is the main suspect.
Southern Magic Christmas is the 8th book in the Sweet Tea Witch Mysteries. There are developed characters and a good bit of humor. With several references to past episodes, I would recommend this series be read in order.
Pepper and her new found family are quite the bunch. Her grandmother Betty is always good for a laugh and outrageous ideas. Pepper gets to meet her boyfriends parents and things just go crazy from there. It was a good mystery with a great plot.
I like this series. Murder, magic & mayhem that could end the town. Pepper, Axel & her cousins need to figure out the murderer, who took Grandma Craple's magic, how to stop the increasing cold & save Christmas. Easy to read, with the ending leading toward the next book. Looking forward to it!
This was my favorite. I love Christmassy stuff and this had a decent dose, with a interesting mystery. Not a hard one but interesting. Enjoyed the regular characters and some new ones had great parts. Rufus didn't have a part in this book, so no further development there but he is a "bad guy" so that's okay.
Christmas is drawing near and the temperature is dropping! Someone dies during the Christmas home tours. How can this be happening? Grandma Betty can’t fix it because her magic is broken too. It’s all up to Pepper to find to killer and warm up the town. Is Pepper up to the job? Silly question!
When her boyfriend’s mother comes to town for Christmas and then is accused of murder it makes for an interesting Christmas. Only in a magical town can you make a wish and put it in the snowman‘s hat and it comes true. All the books are really funny right now and I really enjoy it which surprises me because like I said in the others I’m not a serious kind of girl.
Once again, Ms. Boyle delivers a great book. I love her characters and the storyline never grows old. Looking forward to the next story. Wonder if bad boy turned getting better Rufus will show up? And where will Amelia’s wish come true lead? Read to find out!
