The Work Wife

Rate this book
We’ve all been there before: wanting something—or someone—we can’t have. Whether it’s a decadent slice of chocolate cake that will blow a diet, the too expensive yet oh-so-cute shoes that cost more than an entire paycheck, or the drool-worthy barista who whips up this morning’s macchiato…the point is, we can relate.

Meet Charli. A slightly awkward, forever single twenty-eight-year-old woman who definitely wants what she can’t have.
Enter Oliver. A thirty-eight-year-old executive chef who can’t stop thinking about his quirky co-worker, even though he’s engaged. Life is about choices, and saying “yes” to one person means saying “no” to another. But what if Charli and Oliver have been saying yes to the wrong people?

The timing isn’t right. The place isn’t right. But is it ever?

They say if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Charli and Oliver just may set the kitchen on fire.

The Work Wife is a standalone romantic comedy. Equal parts cocky and self-assured, a pinch of awkward sprinkled with a dash of sass, topped with a whole lot of sizzlin’ heat, you'll love this laugh-out-loud romance by best-selling author CJ Martín.

FIVE DELICIOUS STARS ****

This book is EVERYTHING! Hilarious characters, and entertaining as hell plot. A total reading jackpot!

Charlotte is the general manager of a restaurant and on the very first day she applied for this job, she literary crashed into love. A delicious love that tastes so sweet but also bitter at times. That is because she has to work with Oliver Pense, the gorgeous and ultra talented chef that cooks a her restaurant.

Oliver and Charlie have the best friendship; they both love food, they both speak sarcasm, and the sexual tension between them burns red-hot every time they are in the same room together. The only problem is that Oliver is engaged to be married to another woman. Even though they both can feel the attraction, neither of them has ever crossed the line, not only because they work together, and respect Oliver's fiance, but also because they care a lot about their friendship. So all odds are against them.

Even though the story has angst, it is also very funny. These characters are always getting into all kinds of trouble and it's hilarious to read. The best word I can find to describe this book is delicious, mostly because it's meant to be devoured. And because there is so many layers to the story, and the romance is so sweet I could almost taste it.

If you haven't tried this author before, The Work Wife is the perfect opportunity. C.j Martin and her talented pen really transport the reader inside the story, almost making you feel like an actual part of it. I highly recommend this book, I can see everyone who reads it absolutely loving it.

Book: The work wife

Author: CJ Martin

Chatty romance book thoughts:
I applaud this author for navigating this rom com (bordering on cheating) theme well. CJ Martin is unapologetic in allowing her readers to see the attraction and chemistry between a duo that for all intents and purposes should not be together. I’ve come to realise that I love a foodie themed romance and any author that can describe food as sinfully as this author does, deserves to be read. Loads of chemistry, sexy angst and a dose of the chuckles this book is a good all rounder, a book that definitely showcases this authors writing talent and ability to make you fall for this coupes taboo connection.

Why not five:
CJ Martin is an author that has a fabulous way with words - if I was star rating this book for writing talent alone my review would be looking a little different. However, largely when I review books it comes down to how much I enjoyed the story/plot, whether or not I was able fall in love with the characters and the extent in which I ‘feel’ a connection. This story had a little of all those elements for my reading time but something held me back from falling completely in love. Did I enjoy my time with this story? Yes. Did it make me giddy excited to spend my reading time? Not entirely. All in all a likeable story but for my tastes it was missing that ‘knock me off my feet’ factor.

4 1/2 "sizzling hot" stars!!

The dynamic between Charli and Oliver is AH-MAZING! They have a magnetic pull which is undeniable. I love the mental image of them verbally sparring whether it's when they are testing menu items for the next week, placing food orders or simply passing in the hallway. They can never seem to stay away from one another. It's like they crave every bit of interaction...both the positive and the negative. They want whatever they can get....within respectable parameters of course....since Oliver is engaged...to another woman.

The story is told from both Charli and Oliver's POV, which is great because you're in both of their heads and can see their thoughts and insecurities. You are also privy to their dirty thoughts and let me tell you they each have those about the other person...frequently!

Charli is so relatable. She's fun and quirky but also somewhat unsure of herself due to some bad previous relationships. Oliver is a little cocky (I mean executive chef ...hello...of course he is), but he's also sweet and honorable. He keeps trying to tell himself that he just cares about Charli as a friend. Poor guy, he's head over heels and doesn't know it.

They have several close calls where they almost give into their feelings and the angst factor climbs to a pretty high decibel. Then they shut each other out for a while. That's pretty painful. So much so that I could hardly stand it. I don't know how the two of them survived. Eventually everything has to sort itself out, but I'll let you read it to see what happens....after all, I don't want to ruin any of the fun!

This is the first book I've read by C.J. Martin and I loved it. I immediately added everything else she's written to my TBR.

I absolutely loved this! I was offered an ARC prior and had to turn it down because of my hectic writing schedule, but then a trusted blogger friend messaged me raving about it, so I made time. I’m so glad I did. I couldn’t love Charli and Oliver more. The Work Wife is set in a high-end restaurant and the kitchen sizzles with their chemistry. The premise may be heavy, but the feel is light and romantic with the perfect amount of humor and angst and a swoon factor that’s off-the-charts. It's a little forbidden-y, a little friends-to-lovers, a little unrequited love. If you’re looking for an all-around perfect romance that will leave you grinning, this is the one!

This was an utterly charming story, with the perfect amount of smexy thrown in. It was funny and real. Charli is awkwardly adorable with a hysterical inner voice. She is so spunky, and just an everyday kind of girl. The kind you want to be best friends with. Oliver (great name for a hero by the way) was a bit cocky, but not obnoxiously so. He was dreamy and swoony, and sexy, with just the right amount of sarcastic thrown in. He truly was a stand-up guy, trying to do the right thing. There was just the right amount of angst within the pages. This kind of had everything a perfect lil romance needs. Such an enjoyable read!!!

What happens when you deny an attraction for what you think are all the right reasons? In a sweet, somewhat angsty, romance Charli Truse & Oliver Pensen learn just what can go right and wrong all in the name of love.

The slow burn and sexual tension is palpable. Their near misses are angst-y. The life-like situations and feelings are handled maturely without any unnecessary drama. Charli and Oliver are both characters I loved and connected with on some level. They are human and realistic - something that is much appreciated in a time when body images are so distorted.

The story is a wonderful and delightful lesson in relationships and not just the romantic kind. Family and friends all play a role in their lives and the decisions they make. There’s definitely some heat and a bit of sexy dirty talk. All of it coalesces to make The Work Wife a tender and heartwarming read.

This can be sore topic for a lot of people...cheating. There was no physical cheating between the lead but they have feeling for one another even though hero has a fiance. So that is a personal take for every one of you. Would you give this book a chance.... I like the way author wrote about it. And how no one is made up to be nothing more then human. There are no victims here.

C.J. Martin did a Wonderful job! Loved Charli and Oliver from the beginning! The work wife was so much fun to read! The cute quirky things that only your significant other would know is how I would describe Charli & Oliver’s relationship. So much desire to be more...and that’s just the beginning! I definitely recommend this book!

Didn’t particularly like either of the mc’s but in the end Oliver proved to be really unlike able. It just seemed stupid when he breaks it off with the fiancée and doesn’t tell charli. He acted like a jealous ass for first half while he had a fiancée and then when she got annoyed he behaved like a sulking spoilt teenager.

I thoroughly enjoyed THE WORK WIFE by C.J. Martín. The story was highly engaging and I finished it in one sitting.

Charli and Oliver are a fabulous couple. It’s been a long time since I’ve read about a couple whose attraction is this intense, this devoted and this loving: they truly are a perfect match. The magnetism between them is incredible; they are sizzling hot when they come together. Among all this they are so down to earth; Charli and Oliver are relatable, sincere and genuine.

Let’s not forget that Oliver is engaged, people! I know this might be a turn off for readers but I didn’t find it so at all. I think the author did a first-rate job in showing the turmoil of two people who are struggling to fight the attraction between them. They are imperfect as any person is yet Oliver and Charli had definite ideas of where the line never to be crossed was and when they found themselves wavering, they were adult in their response.

The writing flowed effortlessly for the most part but there were several times I was jolted out of the story due to errors. The book needs another round of proofreading.

This was the first C.J. Martín I’ve read and I’ll definitely be looking out for other works by the author.

Romances are ment to be an escape from life and so it is rare to find a good one that is real. Charlie and Oliver each have struggles many deal with every day. They both want something they can't have, or can they. Oliver has to make big decisions that affect everything he has done for years. Charlie has to move past her past. I loved the build up as well as the side characters. This book was definitely hard to put down!

What do you do when you find yourself in love with someone who is already engaged to someone else? In Charli's case she hides her feelings while she thinks that no one else knows. But are her feelings for Oliver only one-sided? Could he also sense the sparks that fly whenever she is around? But what should he do with his fiance? With beautifully written characters, CJ Martin gives the reader a tale of true love. This story had me laughing out loud and sighing continually. It was a perfect romance.

This is my first C J Martin book but will not be my last. I loved the characters - Charli and Oliver are real and identifiable and I really cared what happened to them. The setting is hot, hot, hot, every pun intended. You need to read this book!

Delicious

The banter though! Charli is hilarious, and Oliver her absolute match. Funny, sweet, easy to enjoy. And....hot. it's good they spend a lot of time near the kitchen = fire extinguisher is a must. C J's mix of vulnerable, strong, confident Oliver, and spitfire, spirited, sweet Charli is a dish you shouldn't miss.

5 REAL LIKE STARS!! C.J. Martin has written a beautiful story that reads like real people with feelings, not characters. Oliver and Charli knows right from wrong, but it is hard when the heart is involved. Their story is full angst, humor, feelings and love. This author has a special writing style that sucks you into the story land with the characters. Do yourself a favor and 1-Click this book.

I picked this up because I needed to read a book by an author with my initials for a reading challenge and somehow stumbled across this. I usually only read books by my favourite authors or if something has been recommended by someone I trust, so coupled with the fact that I've never read this author and this also includes a hero engaged to another woman, I didn't have super high hopes for this going in. But after reading I'm so happy to report that this book totally exceeded all of my expectations!

Plot:
Charli is the manager at a restaurant and Oliver is the head chef. Charli has pretty much been in love with Oliver since the second they met a year ago and at the start of the book they're just friends, but the boundaries start to become blurred and Charli is all too aware of the fact that Oliver is engaged to another woman.

Why 5 stars?
This book kind of crept up on me; for the first 25% I was enjoying this just fine but wasn't entirely blown away by the plot or characters, but then suddenly something clicked and I fell in love with Charli and Oliver as a couple. The sexual tension between them before they got together is what got me hooked and the anticipation was just SO GOOD! They had great chemistry and there were some great steamy scenes too! I liked that the majority of the book focused almost exclusively on Charli and Oliver's relationship (so it never felt like it was dragging) but we also got some sweet scenes with Charli's sister, and I loved seeing how they became closer as the book progressed. I also really liked that the book didn't end with them getting together, we actually got a good portion of the book featuring their relationship becoming more serious, which I really enjoyed.

Overall I really, really loved this and although, no, it probably won't go down as one of the most memorable books I've ever read, I think the surprise at this being such a fun read after initial hesitations solidifies this as a 5 star read for me!

*Slight spoilers ahead*
A quick note on the cheating thing: Oliver is engaged at the start of the book, and although nothing really happens between Charli and Oliver before he ends things with his fiancé, there is flirting and the boundaries are a little blurry. There are no physical scenes between him and fiancé during the book and their break is pretty clean (i.e. no conflicting or leftover feelings for fiancé on Oliver's behalf). I personally don't mind cheating if its not one of the MCs being cheated on (which sounds really mean, haha), but I know some will want to know before they start reading!

Have you ever met someone you really liked, but the timing was off? You were already in a relationship, or they were in a relationship. That's the predicament the hero and heroine of this book find themselves in. Charlotte (Charli) and Oliver work together in a restaurant. They're attracted to each other, and they have great chemistry. The problem is Oliver is already engaged to someone else when they meet. Tossing aside the "work wife" description of Charli, we simply have a woman who's in love with an unavailable friend she sees nearly every day at work. Oliver is a man who wants to be with one woman but is having issues detangling himself from another woman.

I gotta be honest. I had mixed feelings while reading this. My gut reaction was to hate Oliver for stringing Ainsley along. Oliver is nearly forty years-old for Pete's sake. A mature man knows how to end a relationship when it's not working for him anymore. Oliver and Ainsley had no children together. End the engagement, and one of you needs to move out of the house. Tears will be shed.
Angry words will be spoken. Fragile items might even be broken. Still, it's better in the end to be honest. Trying to live a lie will make you both miserable.

As I continued reading the story, I pitied Oliver because he'd settled for Ainsley thinking life with her was as good as it was gonna get. I know people who've married under those exact circumstances. They look across the table at each other and think, "We get along. I think you're nice. We can make it work." How could he have known the girl of his dreams would appear weeks after he proposed to Ainsley? No matter what he did, someone he cared about was going to get hurt.

When the inevitable break-up happened, my heart broke for Ainsley. I identified with the character who was dumped. Yes, I've been in her shoes. She didn't deserve to have the future she'd been planning for months ripped away from her. The ending for me was bittersweet. The two people who'd been longing to be together for most of the book got together. Good for them. They got a happy ending. I want a book where Ainsley gets her happy ending now.

Holy chemistry! I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book with so much chemistry between two characters without them touching each other!!

I’m sure there will be people who won’t enjoy this book because of the situation we find our main characters in at the beginning. One is engaged...but seems to be just kind of “meh” with the relationship and is staying for reasons that kind of make sense but aren’t good enough reasons to stay (to me anyway). Then he meets that one person that just makes everything else disappear. So what does he do? Nothing—for over a year. He soon realizes he needs to wake up and grab life by the horns or he’s going to lose out. Then we get to the really fun stuff!! There’s no actual (physical) cheating so don’t worry about that!

This book is downright amazing and I loved it! Too often we read books that are “too good to be true” but this one screams real life as far as the build up and relationships go. I literally could not put it down I once I started reading it.

Grab this book! You’ll be glad you did.

This book had a really strong start and the slow burn lasted like 60% of the book, since the MMC was engaged. But he broke off his engagement, doesn’t tell the FMC, says he can’t live without her because she’s his, but ignores her every text and call till she has to show up at his door and profess her feelings? And the FMC is obsessed with him, fantasized about him, but he tells her how he feels and she tells him to quit his job??? The miscommunication was NOT IT.

First spicy scene was at 68% then it was a whirlwind after. Went on their first date and then GOT MARRIED shortly after. The rest of the book was them banging each other. When they got in their first big fight, he carries her to the room and it was so good the fight was over.

This book had a really good potential with friends to lovers and forbidden love. I wish they didn’t drag the first part and then rush the second. But overall, it was still pretty good.

This author is a new-to-me author and I received this copy as a give-away prize from the author. I loved this book and the push/pull between Charli and Oliver. They meet on the streets of New York and develop a friendship that goes from lust to love. They both hide their feelings, because Oliver is engaged to be married. They both end up working at the same restaurant and the heat increases between them. Oliver realizes that his engagement was a mistake and his feelings for Charli continue to increase. The feelings come to a head and after several situations occur, they do the Vegas quickie marriage route and get their HEA. I do plan to read more books by this author.

Average

I wondered, when I read the intro page, ‘Why would it take over 5 hours to read a romance story?’ I found out. There was no romance til well after the 1st half of the book.
Just miles and miles of around and around.
It desperately needs an editor, as there are many typos. My favorite was when she paid six dollars for a cup of COPY.
Average for these self-published Amazon books. Sadly, just average.

Liked this, but didn't love this. The whole "he has a fiance" thing bothered me so much.

Chef and restaurant manager are skirting around their feelings. The fiance is really shallow, so I couldn't see why everyone liked her so much. Oliver is an a-hole and he annoyed me more than I wanted him to.

Cute

I thought this was a good book, but I would not say it was a "wow" book. I don't really see the comedy part. It was a romance. I liked the characters, but the whole plot was sexual attraction and sex. I need something more. It also bugged me that he kept biting her. When they had a fight, the first thing he did was bite her neck. It bordered on domination. Not my thing.

Cute and fun, but really seemed to loose focus after about 70%. I was confused as to why the book didn't end at that point as all the conflict was over and the last 30% was pure fluffy wish fulfillment: shopping for pretty dresses and everything is perfect and yadda yadda. It was basically a typical romance epilogue but it was the last 30% of the book. Past that, it was fun.

Enjoyed it but the typos and grammar...

Overall it was a cute book. Totally fun and was so naughty. One of the better chick lit story lines I’ve read. Would have given a higher rating but the accidental repetitive words and typos made it difficult to push through.
