Dr. Jen Stone, MD. Emergency medicine doctor. Fledgling mage.

Living in Minneapolis and friends with a powerful mage, I’m one of the few non-magical people who knows about the magical world. I stayed on the periphery, preferring to work my shifts in the ER helping people. Until one of those patients is a vampire.

Saving him brings me deeper into a world my friend tried to keep me from—and draws me closer to a gorgeous intern with a secretive past.

It turns out I might have some magical talent of my own, but I have to master it quickly if I want to survive. Assisted by powerful dark mages, surrounded by vampires, I’m faced with an attack that seems anything but magical. I’ve got to figure out what’s happening and why before I become trapped by the vampires. The more I learn, the more dangerous it is for me, and the less I can trust those around me.

Somehow, a fledgling hedge mage like myself might be the only one to stop what’s happening, but will I be able to learn enough magic to save my life?

This book was good but it took longer than I would've liked to get into the story. A hedge mage and a doctor is a great idea. The characters were good but I could just use a little more from this book. I am uncertain whether I will continue with this series.

After the third time someone joined the perpetual dialog without me noticing how they joined the conversation, i scrapped this book. Just give me some descriptions man, ain't nobody gotta talk that much and say absolutely nothing.

I enjoyed the Medicine and Magic series by this author, so when I saw that she was giving Jen, the side-kick her own series I was intrigued. Jen didn't have any magic, she was the human friend getting her eyes opened while Kate when on her adventures.

We now learn that Jen maybe does have magic, a very small amount and is what is called a hedge mage. And much like Kate did, Jen stepped into the middle of a mess by doing the right thing, but doing her job as a doctor and saving a patient. This patient turns out to be a VIP and people start coming after Jen. Jen with a bit of knowledge in the magical world has some allies of her own she calls on and an ally she didn't realize.

By the end of the book Jen knows more than ever, has a favor owed by someone in power and sees why Kate was seduced by the magical world even as all she wants to do is sit at home and watch tv. It will be interesting to see where things go from here for Jen.

After reading the authors other two series, I thought I would give this a go and I wasn't disappointed.
I really liked the quick pace of the book, although I don't think you have to read the other series. I do think it helps, as you have some more of the back setting to what the character keeps referring to.

I have loved all of this authors stories so far and can't wait to read more.
It was a great read and I have already downloaded the next in this series.

I wanted to like this one, I really did. Unfortunately the writing was extremely tedious, the characters extremely flat, and the dialogue awkward and clunky.

Far too much of the plot hinges on the reader having read the Magic and Medicine series. This should have been an additional book in that series rather than attempting to be a stand alone spinoff series.

Frost Bite

A doctor who is both a skilled ER fellow and a newly discovered mage witch is forcibly sucked into a magic centered fight. An excellent start to a great series. Highly recommended.

I did not continue reading this book because I felt it was going into black magic which I do not want to read about when there are a number of other good books to chose from.

Surprisingly good!

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but the author has done a good job using the character she has developed.

This book is a great way to while away the hours. You won't go wrong reading it.

Okay

A couple of things I disliked about this book, first, she should have been called Nancy, as in Nancy Negative. Second, the dialogue is stilted and drawn out. She's always arguing, What if I can't, what if it doesn't, etc, over and over.

Intriguing world

I enjoy this mix of hospital doctors and magic, with the odd vampire thrown into the mix. It is an interesting and engaging story and it makes me want to read more in this world.

I still really enjoyed this though I do think she asked way to many what if questions. What if this doesn't work? What then? What if that didn't work? What after plan Z? She must have had questions like that as a doctor and hated them. I know she had doubts but she sounded like a little kid then.

Another great beginning to another series. It is nice to see a secondary character get a starring role. What I love, though, is that she isn't all powerful. She doesn't know how strong she is or if she even wants to be in the magic world. Whatever she decides she is going to have to work at it. She gets through things with courage, intelligence, and determination.
