When the Crazed come for you, where will you hide?
Paul B Kohler is the International Bestselling author of the highly acclaimed novel Linear Shift. His recent work includes Turn, Detour, and Reversion, from The Humanity's Edge Trilogy, along with several short stories. His short story, Rememorations, was included in The Immortality Chronicles - The Best Anthology of the Year as voted in the 2016 Preditors and Editors Readers Poll. Rememorations was also nominated for Best American Science Fiction.
Humanity's Edge: The Complete Trilogy - This is my first read by this author and I was pleasantly surprised. The longer I read, the more disappointed I became with the storylines, the characters and happenings. Yes, we're dealing with zombies, but there should still be realism.
While Turn, book #1, started well, was fast paced and action packed, there were some things difficult to swallow. For example (spoiler): there's no way a military leader in charge of a takeover/evacuation would allow two civilians to take charge. OK, let that slide, but the comment that the Colonel "retreated to his corps" had me laughing since that's not in this character's vocabulary. Also, the officer left in charge by the Colonel is not portrayed properly. (Maybe the author is a civilian and doesn't understand the Military?) The sheriff suffers too jumping from a leader to an idiot to an out-of-control savage; he's negligent in the wrong places. Research would have made this correct and realistic.
These types of inconsistencies are prevalent and distracting. But the twists and turns, along with the stress and events keeps the reader interested in the story. Among other editing errors, this author follows the trend of using god when it is God; prejudice and intolerance, or not standing up to his publisher?
With Detour, book #2, the inconsistencies are coming out of the walls since the author appears not to have planned a better path through this book. The storylines are weak, the thoughts and actions of the sheriff are ridiculous. He's close to his daughter's whereabouts but a weak link keeps him from finding out where she went. Anger and stupidity are now the norm for him. Another spoiler: he's accomplished his mission at the hospital (which the hours spent there are unrealistic - plot planning) and is saved by an armed gang. Does he stay hidden, with his weapons and supplies; nope, he's here I am, take my weapons and goodies, and let me tell you about my secret weapon and where the rest of my people and supplies are hidden. All without a punch to his gut or a drop of water forced down his throat.
I made it almost to the end of Detour, but the poorly thought out storylines, which were mostly good in Turn, and the exponential increase in the stupidity of the sheriff's actions and the farfetched "realism" (yes, zombie story but plot better, then ambiguities aren't glaring at the reader) had me so annoyed I lost total interest in the rest of the story, after 60 percent read. Mr. Kohler started so well and floundered when he could have really had a different zombie story. These books have been out and still have not been corrected? 2*
( Format : Audiobook ) "An artist painting in lead and gore." The three books which comprise the Humanity's Edge trilogy: Turn, Detour, and Reversion. A meteorite crashes into a farm barn, killing a young teenager and burning both the barn and the house. After going out to investigate, Marshall Clay Dobbs returns to Carterville Stationhouse in time to see a couple of last night's drunks being released. One started vomitting blood, them convulsing, attacking a deputy, Kyle, and Clay was forced to shoot the manic man. He'd never shot anyone before, Carterville was just a quiet small town. When a military convoy drives in shortly after, it becomes clear that something very strange is happening. Colonel Wallace wants to forcibly evacuate the whole town...
It is the end of the world apocalypse. A handful of survivors, led by Clay, his one aim besides keeping his people safe, is to find his wife and daughter. But Clay is also conflicted, his lifelong sense of morality conflicted by the circumstances. Quite cleverly written and seen mostly from the Sheriff's point of view, the group face zombie-like hordes and other dangers in the weeks following the initial transformation. Characterisation is good, relationships at times intriguing (although the book two constant recollections of his daughter by Clay does get intrusive) and the battle gory, inventive and exciting. Although predictable at times, and showing occasional glitches, the emotional tension is good throughout, the personality development good, and the ending well worth waiting for. Just don't get too attached to any of the characters.
All is enhanced by the excellent narration of Wayne Mitchell. His phrasing and timing is spot on, the reading emotionally tracking the text and giving it increased emphasis. The characters are individually and appropriately voiced, also. A fine performance.
My thanks to the rights holder who, at my requesr, freely gifted me a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. A very enjoyable and different take on the zombie apocalypse which benefits from being read sequentially without having to wait for the next installment. Humanity's Edge should appeal to all who enjoy this genre.
I loved the story of Clay, the small town sherriff, trying to protect his town, his friends, and his daughter against the monsters(human and not human) Great story!
A very disappointing read. The writing is terrible, the execution as bad, and the characters are just plain unbelievable.
The first chapter is good and it goes downhill from there, absolutions no realism in their actions.
Military “comic book characters “, a stupid sheriff, idiot deputy, unbelievable towns people. The book was horrible.
I read the first one, but skimmed along when parts got to stupid and inconsistent. Book two was worse, deserved 0 stars and book 3, well n honesty I did read it all because it was too painful.
This book started out really well, the nano tech and the meteorite got me hooked at the beginning. I thought the meteorite would have a part in what happened. The idea for the story was good, there was plenty action and some really good characters. However the lead man Clay really got on my nerves, I kept wanting someone too give him a punch and wake him up to the fact that the old law and order ways wouldn't work in an apocalypse, with everything that was going on he should have been a stronger character.. It was him that ruined my initial enjoyment of the book.
Audible: I didn't hate this book series.I also didn't really like it.It is middle of the road sort of zombie apocolypse. The characters never grew on me. Narration by Wayne Mitchell was ok. Ralph and Brandon sounded like stoners. I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
The book was okay. I really did get tired of everyone shivering and all the women being weak, expect for some exceptions of a few characters. There was no depth to the story- the background and premise was awesome but lacked depth. The final book was the best. Overall, I'll state it was average but I can state that Kohl's writing is getting stronger, as the time passes.
I bought this e book for under $5. Not worth it at all. I read it due to being half way through and then hit by “lightening” and realized 1 thing! This is time I will NEVER get back. If anyone has interest in this book? Buy a gun and shoot off a small digit first. If you like that? Go right ahead and buy and then read this book!
Simply awful. The author obviously did zero research on military doctrine, science, or survival. His characters are cartoonish whose traits are inconsistent. The similes, plot lines, and tropes are often nonsensical. The storyline would be good for a graphic novel or comic book, but this series appears to have been written as a middle school project.
The world really faced the end? This books keeps you engrossed in till the end were we l written with a errors that didn't effect the reading still easy to stay in track
I loved this post apocalyptic story! I liked how when finally able to start building a life again, not everything was perfect. Well written the characters filled out and not always with good things. Would recommend this author!
This series was like a breath of fresh air to this genre, zombies. If you are like me n read about all I can find, this series has very different slant...
