the ministry of magic storyline is proving surprisingly interesting! looking forward to seeing where it's headed. i do miss the og cast a little (mostly mary who hasn't had a chance to do anything in awhile) but the new characters are working for me! katarina and cyrus' old farmers friendship is especially cute lol. i also hope katarina eventually wins her pitched struggle against compulsory heterosexuality so she can finally do something about her extremely unsubtle desire to marry maria

I will be re-reading them ALL. Seriously, these are my new Happy Reads and I badly need them.

While I still love this series, this was not the best example of it - too much time spent on the FL2 characters, really, to the exclusion of the cast from the first half. It looks like that might be changing as Katarina heads into the next phase, and I'm really hoping it will, because none of the new guys can hold a candle to the old ones.

While I loved the first few books, the recent novels have made me a bit weary of the series. I feel like the story is being dragged out, and have had a difficult time continuing the series. Overall, though, the volume was still a decent read.

Great introduction to a new adventure

Really great installment! It was nice to see other love interests fall not for Katarina. Tjis book felt a lot like an introduction, so can't wait for book 8 and 9 to see where the adventure is heading to.

I loved this volume for a different reason I did the other volumes.

As an otome game player, I love seeing the MC build relationships with all the other LIs. What made This series special was getting a glimpse of how much the MC means to all the LIs. It made me root for everyone and love them all so much.

But this volume made me realize how suffocating it is to always have the *full* cast of LIs at all times.

In this volume, Katarina is accompanies by several others to search for a specific ancient text. While all the characters are fond of Katarina, none of them are chasing after her or being clingy. Even Maria and Sora, the two people in love with Katarina within the group, can go 2 seconds without clinging onto Katarina. As a result, any moments spent alone between Katarina and one of the two hit better.

I wasn't really into the idea of Katarina and Maria or Katarina and Sora that much, but this volume made me realize how sweet it would be if Katarina ended up with any one of the two. I definitely wouldn't object to either possibility.

In fact, there was a really cute moment between Sora and Katarina (complete with their own drawing) which made me squeal in delight.

Well, realistically Katarina's gonna end up with Jeord. There were plenty of moments in the previous volumes where Katarina and Jeord have bonded with each other. In this volume, we only get one brief interaction between the two. In the process, not only do we discover how Jeord keeps a handful of chocolates specifically for Katarina, but we learn that Katarina feels a certain warmth from being around Jeord. Obviously she's warming up to him and is quite possibly more accepting of the idea of ending up with him.

Anyhow, time to get into the meat of the book: the plot a.k.a. my favorite part about this novel.

In previous volumes, I cared more about character interactions than the actual plot. In this case, I love the plot even more because the author has set up a premise where Katarina might actually grow as a character.

From what we know so far, the game will push all of its main events onto the characters. Even in FL1, Katarina still got judged in front of the entire cafeteria despite being a good person. Even though it was caused by something different and had a different outcome, the point is it still happened

What does this mean for Katarina? It means there is a very real chance that she might have to fight against Maria and Cyrus. There is also a chance that Katarina will become evil. As of now, we have no idea how powerful dark magic is. For all we know, Katarina might accidentally get influenced by the dark magic and become evil, if only for a brief moment. I do hope we see Katarina turn evil in some way or another because it would give so much opportunity for her to grow.

Think about it. The only dangerous thing that happened to her was pass out under the influence of dark magic. She did get kidnapped at some point, but it was easy for her to charm her way out. But turning evil under the influence of dark magic? It would take so much more effort to wiggle out of that.

I believe that, if the author plays it right, we can get so many opportunities for Katarina to become a better person (or at least a wiser one. I love Bakarina but she has to improve somehow).

Another thing I loved about this volume was Cyrus and Katarina bonding over farming. There was nothing romantic about their interaction (in fact, they see each other as a grandma/grandpa). But the potential friendship stemming from their shared love of farming is beautiful. I just wished we got more content between Farmer Cyrus and Farmer Katarina.

Bottom line: I like where the plot is going. I like Katarina having one-on-one romantics with the characters, regardless of them being romantic or platonic ones. I'd be fine with ditching the FL1 LIs for the rest of the series lmao. Maybe sprinkle in some Katarina/Jeord moments and we're good to go.

For some reason i can't stop reading these My next life as a villainess light novels. they're like popcorn. I just started the series halfway through the year and i'm already at volume 7. That's really good for me as normally i don't read that many volumes of something in a year. However....that being said, this volume wasn't that great.

Essentially in this one, Katarina realizes she needs to make friends with the two new love interests from Fortune lover II, Cyrus and Dewey. The only real difference i noticed between this and other volumes is that these two specifically don't fall in love with Katarina and instead fall in love with the protagonist proper, Maria. (who has absolutely no desire for either of them and is in love with Katarina because of course). So if we count the cult of Katarina we have

Jeordo, Keith, Nico, Sophia, Maria, Mary, Sora, Rafael, and Alan. I THINK that's all of them. 9 people who all want her desperately. She has her own bi-sexual harem but is too stupid to realize she does. which is amusing in itself, but also makes you want to see some romantic advancement. we're at volume 7 already!

I have to say, i am REALLY surprised at the fact that it's volume 7 and i STILL have no idea if she's going to pick anyone. I seriously can't figure it out. You'd THINK having a fiance would make it obvious, but not in this series. She's so busy trying to avoid her doom flags that she doesn't even notice every person trying to get in her pants. I've read and seen so many anime/light novels and normally you can IMMEDIATELY tell who the protag is going to pick, so the fact that i'm sitting here going "duhhhh i have no idea" is SUPER impressive.

Anyway, got a bit off topic. Something that's interesting is how this volume focuses on them trying to find this book that will apparently raise the light magic power inside maria, but at the same time, katarina gets her own boost of dark magic. So, it's pretty cool to see Katarina get some magic and we'll have to see in the future volumes how this will affect her as dark magic is known to not be good in this series (yes i know dark magic is never REALLY good in ANY series, but this one in particular) and it'll be cool to see her use some actual magic later on hopefully.

The biggest problem with this volume was that it didn't have more people falling for Katarina which i always find to be the funniest thing about this series, and also that a majority of this volume was them running around looking at books and spending time researching at the library. not exactly the most riveting stuff. Also, because now that she's out of school and working at the ministry of magic, the only real characters we see all the time are Sora and Maria since they both work at the ministry with her. whenever they want to bring in other characters they need some contrived reason for them to be there like "oh, i was doing research" or "oh i needed to talk to someone". it's like..yeah it would be unrealistic for ALL of them to work at the ministry but coming up with reasons for them to show up get a bit rough.

All in all, this wasn't a GREAT volume. it seemed like setup for other and stuff and was...okay. not the best, but serviceable. all in all, 3.25 out of 5 rounded down to a 3.

“Losing time sitting here won't make things any better.” (page 200)

Obsessed with Sora!! He's absolutely hilarious, but he's so nonchalantly and unapologetically himself. It’s so cute that he whispers to her, explaining things in terms she'll understand. Katarina describes, “I first met Sora under unique circumstances and when we were supposed to part ways, fate brought us back together at the same workplace. I was really glad to share my first job with him. Having a friend who I could speak freely to was part of it, but he was also very resourceful and had a positive personality that kept me optimistic. Working wasn't so scary if he was with me.” (page 31). He always walks her to her carriage at the end of the day, and I swear, I hope she chooses him in the end to live her life carefree, travel with him, eat food, and be in a simple life.

It sucks that her status forces her to commute from home to work, but she's definitely grown as a character and it's very lovely to see that she's maintained a healthy relationship with her brother Keith. His conversation with her under her favorite tree is a tender moment.

The Covenant chapter is a funny one, especially the library books teehee!! Ultimately this series has me laughing, but also keeps me anxious every which way. We still hate Jeord, hope we see him bug off. Much like Sora’s reaction, that's exactly how I feel too, when he said, “Phew, that was scary. He was smiling, but his eyes were burning. Was he threatening me or something?” (144).

I swear, tables will be flipped and all stones turned if she actually friggin' marries that sadist prince.

Katarina is finding her new job both more fulfilling and more frustrating than she could imagine. She's learning more about some of her new coworkers (and Fortune Lover II's new capture targets), and finding how she can fit into her new department. She's also somehow uncovered an ancient mystery right in the middle of the Ministry . . .

And with this book we're finally back to what I LIKE about the series---Katarina being a lovable doofus stumbling into all kinds of trouble, and without too many scenes of her prospective partners being vicious to each other.

I'm personally glad this book focuses more on the new characters rather than rehashing much the same story beats with the old ones (although Jeord gets some actual new development). Katarina being so fond of manual labor is a surprise to pretty much everyone she runs across. And I love how the end of the book subverts this by forcing her to do the thinking stuff.

The repetitive double-telling format is here again. Although it is interesting to get the inside perspective from a number of other characters, the author isn't very good at this and can't find a way to do it beyond literally repeating every single line of dialogue.

The Ministry arc is finally getting to some good stuff this book. I hope the anime eventually gets this far. I rate this book Recommended.

Katarina is thrilled to be doing manual labour since she knows she would hate desk work.
As she confirms that Geordo could not be the one who sent her the mysterious Japanese note, she learns about his grandfather's lecherous nature and assures him that she knows they are different people. (Personally I think this scene was written just for Geokata content)
I suspect Elizabeth the monkey means well. The first time she seemingly did something bad to Katarina, the latter had a dream warning her about bad ends.
Now here Elizabeth steals Katarina’s accessory to lead her to a farm. Turns out the strict director Lanchester is actually a nervous country farm boy at heart. He gets used to Katarina but is too nervous around Maria until Katarina forces him to confront his fears. Now Katarina and Maria still get to farm together.
One day, Maria and Katarina discover lost magic and that the former has the chance to obtain the light covenant. After days of searching through libraries and chasing leads, they find the answer in a warehouse. As Maria obtains the lost knowledge, Katarina accidentally does the same, but with the dark covenant.
Katarina fears that she will be corrupted but her friends assure her they will never leave her side.

3.5! I've previously dismissed the plot of this series as something I'm not really interested in, but after this volume I think I can finally say I'm intrigued! Things are finally coming together re: Katarina's slowly developing "dark magic" destiny (and I love that we're seeing this paralleled with Maria! <3). I also rather liked the bits with Cyrus, which was a nice change up as I was getting a bit bored of the FL2 characters last volume.

Anything involving the original core cast has gotta be mentioned as I love them dearly. Even though the ministry setting doesn't allow them all to interact much atm, we were treated to some nice moments. Jeord opening up too Katarina was so sweet :(( as were her little moments with Sora (although I wish he got more spotlight considering how much time they spend together...feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity) And the ending!!! it reminded me of what I really love about this series.

“Whatever you end up doing, none of us will ever leave you. We will always keep supporting you,” Nicol said with his dangerously attractive smile.
It’s not just Keith... All of them will stay with me, letting me know if I’m doing something wrong.
“Thank you, all of you,” I said from the bottom of my heart.
The fear that had burdened me so much had now completely disappeared. I couldn’t do anything by myself, but, with the support of all my friends, I was sure that everything would be fine”

WAAAY TO SHORT

Foe the most part, I still enjoy the storylines. However, this book was VERY SHORT. As entertaining as the included short mangas of this & previous books, they're less of a bonus and more of a filler. Plus they're not in color. In addition, there does not seem to be ANY character growth for Katarina. This is extremely annoying & disappointing. All of those things put together and that I had to pay full price for less, accounts for the drop from 3stars of previous BOOKS to 1 star for this Over-Priced FILLER. I'm extremely disappointed...

I like the general plot progress and character development for some of the side characters but the retelling several stories or scenes from the other character’s perspective just seemed redundant since it adds nothing to the plot or the character. I also don’t understand why Katarina never gets any character growth.

There are nuggets of awesome inside this book, but it also drags a lot in many places. I can't say more without spoiling, but I hope the author remembers the original cast was so delightful that readers probably want to read about them more than new LIs!

Great as usual

Great translation and I’m really digging Katarina’s work adventures. I kind of hope she never gets married. Magical office lady for life.

Again, neat follow up to sequel material suddenly being integrated into the world, and I swear to god, even though this is supposed to be an otome game Katarina is a pansexual queen. Continues to be a fun light read.
