Kilty #1

Kilty as Charged

Rate this book
A blend of suspense, romance and laughs with just a dash of time-traveling Highlander from author Amy Vansant.

When Catriona spots a plaid posterior passed out on the Hollywood movie lot where she works, she doesn't know her life as a fixer for Hollywood's spoiled elite is about to grow more complicated.

She wants to write-off the ridiculously sexy, kilt-wearing Brochan as a con artist, but her adoptive father seems strangely comfortable with a man claiming to have no memory of his past or knowledge of the modern world.

A red-bearded thug, an old picture and a three hundred year-old vendetta soon have Catriona worried she could lose everything - including her mysterious time traveling Scotsman.

A Highlander followed her home... Can she keep him?

I read this book for my local reading group. There are seven of us. Three of us finished this book and none of us are reading the sequel.

Now I’ll be fair here. This is a book featuring a time-travelling, kilt wearing Scottish Highlander who says things like, “Dinnae ye want to see mah wizard’s wand?”and I bored of these suckers about a decade ago. I didn’t have good thoughts going in but once I was in I decided to stick with it because it was only mildly irritating and, at times, slightly entertaining and I thought I was going to have to converse about its plot intricacies or lack thereof (turns out the other 2 had nothing at all to say).

Catriona is a “fixer” for wealthy movie people. She’s used to dealing with odd requests and weirdos so when she discovers a man wearing a kilt on set, with nothing on underneath, she gives that naked bum a smack to get it and his “twigs and berries”moving.

Well, wouldn’t you?

Catriona thinks, “She made it a point to know everyone on the lot who was someone. This guy was no one.”

Ugh.

Turns out he isn’t your average, everyday nobody, of course. He’s a time-travelling Scottish mercenary and they have an adventure to go on. Or something like that.

There is a lot of time spent ogling his bod but there’s some other stuff happening too. Just don’t ask me what it is because I read this last week and the details have already fled in terror from my head. I do remember that there is a villain and his two inept sidekicks who belong in a remake of Home Alone instead of inside a novel written in 2016.

To wrap this up, silliness happens, sexual encounters almost happen, and they insult each other and pretend they don’t find each other attractive and there’s tons of awkward dialogue there to stumble over. I honestly believe that I am too grouchy for this book. I am totally, 100% the wrong audience and will not deny that. I found it contrived and not funny. I think it tried way too hard to be cutesy and ended up annoying the heck out of me. But even more annoying was the fact that there was no HAGGIS as promised and NONE of my questions were answered when I turned the last page because there is a sequel. There is no real character depth or relationship development either but if you’re looking for a read so light and free of substance that it may fly away, this might be the thing for you.

Aaannnnnnd let the laughs begin! Amy Vansant’s KILTY AS CHARGED has a lot of silly one liners, body ogling and one Scotsman who has traveled through time, ending up in Hollywood, of all places! Catriona is about to discover that all the craziness isn’t solely a Tinsel Town product as she becomes babysitter and life coach for a hotter than blazes time traveler who has a connection to her boss and adopted father…and just maybe he isn’t the only blast from the past living in her world.

I’m going with “cute” in describing this jumbled and chaotic tale. The Laugh-O-Meter was hitting a solid 10 while the Plot-O-Meter hovered around 4. Kind of like watching a stand-up comic, who hits and misses, but is so goofy that one can’t help but stay to the end of his act.

Quirky, crazy, chaotic, with a plot that never settled into itself. Read it for the laughs, because there are a lot of them!

Kilty as Charged is the perfect kind of love story that you just can't wait to sit and read more of it at any given moment. I found myself pulling out my phone and reading more when I was supposed to be doing other things, but it was that addicting. The humor in this story harkens back to the good old romantic comedy movies on the 90s and early 2000s, something sincerely missing in today's world. If you are a sarcastic person, you will absolutely fall out of your chair laughing a few times, especially if you understand where the protagonist is coming from - which almost all women should.
This is honestly just a well put together story that is sweet and easy to read, without the graphic scenes that seem to permeate much of the ebook world. If you are looking for something you wouldn't mind suggesting to your daughter or niece, certainly pick this one up.

Completely enjoyable tale of an accidental time traveling highlander, Brochan, and a Hollywood “fixer” named Catriona. Light humor with just the right touch of romance. Loved it!

This is a cute story. A man dressed as a highlander shows up on a movie set unconscious. The woman who find him thinks he is drunk but she drags him to her apartment for the night. Turns out he's not drunk he's really a highlander from the 18th century and he's traveled in time. He's not the only time traveler though. Over 20 years ago another traveler came through but he had a second person come with him. That person is now after the 3 of them and they must solve the mystery and save their friend from danger.
This book is a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the playfulness between Broch and Cat as they tease each other about their differences.

What a fun book! It is full of weird turns and twists, drama, danger, kidnapping, violence, an evil drug dealer, and a couple of evil sidekicks that stir up a lot of mayhem and misfortune for themselves (a couple of dumb and dumber types). It is full of funny mishaps and misunderstanding, but in the end alls well that ends well! Grabs you at the begining and keeps you to the end! Loved it!

I received this book from the author as an ARC gift ....and am I ever glad I did.... Introduced to this author via another of her series, this one intrigued me, and when I picked it up I could not put it down.. causing me to lose sleep and keep my grumpy husband awake with laughing. JUST the kind of story you love to read , as a break from mundane every day. One warning - its the first part of three (so far) and they will want to be read back to back. They fit together seamlessly, but can also stand alone. I'm a big fan of this author, her characters are quite realistic and the story line keeps you interested ;-)

Think a strong heroine who works doing odd (clean-up) jobs for a movie studio. She finds a man who seems to be passed out drunk. In a kilt. Her job is to keep the actors out of the news and make sure they get help when needed. She finally has to put the Highlander on to a rolling cart & takes him to her apartment. When he wakes he doesn't know where he is, what happened or how he was stabbed.

A little suspense, three (or four) time travelers from the medieval times and who is the good guys & who isn't. Thrown in time travel, kidnapping, danger, romance and humor. This was sensual but clean and the romance between a 21st century heroine and a hero from the middle ages - only fireworks.

No one asked me to leave this review & all opinions are my own. I enjoyed this book so much by a new author (to me) that I'm reading another book by her called Pineapple Lies and it's just as much fun as the first book I read by Amy Vansant. Also, will be buying the next book involving the Highlanders. Promises to be another good book if these two are anything to go by. Hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

This is the first book in the Kilty series by Amy Vansant. Catriona works for her adoptive father Sean as a Hollywood fixer for Parasol Pictures who handles the messes of spoiled celebrities. One day, she stumbles upon a half-naked man in a kilt passed out on a movie lot. Catriona takes him to her home to avoid studio drama. But she finds out he is an eccentric actor Brochan, a time-traveling Highlander with no memory of how he got to modern-day Los Angeles. Brochan doesn’t remember how he got to the present, or how he was stabbed. His past is a puzzle; he is baffled by everyday items such as showers and Uber rides. As Catriona tries to figure out who Brochan really is, which brings confusion and layers to the mystery of Catriona trying to solve. A red bearded thug and a mysterious photo hint at deeper secrets. As Brochan bonds with Catriona, he begins to embrace his new reality, even if he doesn’t fully understand it. This story blends mystery and danger, a slow-burn romance, snappy banter and laugh-out-loud moments, and time travel chaos. I really enjoyed this fascinating urban fantasy romantic mystery novel.

I received a copy of this book from the author through a giveaway. Thanks Amy!

Kilty as Charged is the first book in the Kilty series which features Brochan, a time traveling Scotsman that arrives in present day Los Angeles much to the surprise and annoyance of Catriona. Unlike other books that feature this theme, this one was light on the romance/sex, which I much appreciated. This one had a mystery to solve when Catriona's adoptive father, Sean, is kidnapped by a large, red bearded Scotsman and his bad of thugs. It turns out there's a lot more to Sean than Catriona knew, which didn't come to light until Brochan dropped in on her life. I enjoyed the plot and found the story surprisingly well developed for the first book in a series. I was entertained by the bantering between Brochan and Catriona and Catriona's inner dialogue. Catriona is a tough as nails, independent character I think any woman would appreciate and relate to. I would definitely be interested in reading more in this series.

Catriona is a "fixer" for Parasol Pictures. This means she takes care of studio and actor's problems before they become a problem for the studio.
When she comes across a drunk passed out behind one of the production stages, she winds up carting him to her apartment for the night to figure out what to do with him the next day. In the process of taking him to the hospital, she is kidnapped, and interrogated as to who she knows. She is rescued by the drunk she nicknamed Kilty.
In her adventures she discovers her new friend has time traveled from 300 years in the past, and her adoptive father is unusually complacent around him. There is also a red headed thug after them who is carrying a 300-year vendetta.

Amy wrote a story that was different for me, it included romance, danger, time travel, and a minor mystery as well. This was a fun story that was well written with a good bit of humor in it, and had a few places that the characters actions or story-line was surprising.

This book was funny in parts and I liked the premise of the story but upon reading it, was highly disappointed with the story because I didn't like the aire of superiority that Catriona had toward Broch and men in general. Can we say "Man Eater" boys and girls? Why sure you can. Word to Ms Vansant, not all men are creeps and to give the ladies in the audience the idea that they are us not only sexist, but shameful. If we want guys to see us as more than a body, we should be willing to do the same. The other thing I objected to was the fact that Catriona made Broch seem the "dumb Highlander." Historically, these men were anything but stupid. Some of them were military geniuses, i.e William Wallace. You really should have done a bit more research on them before writing this. I know you were aiming for a comedy but in every story, there needs to be a grain of truth. Unfortunately, you fell short.

This is a humorous, action-filled romance. Catriona works for her adoptive father, Sean, at Parasol Pictures in Hollywood as an official “fixer” but finding a drunk, unconscious man in a kilt is still an unusual occurrence, especially one who barely speaks understandable English and seems to have no idea where he is. It would make more sense if any of the movies currently under production required “hot hunk” highlanders but there are not, and this one is burning up with a fever. When Brochan recovers and is able to answer questions, he insists he is from the 1700’s and his unfamiliarity with all things modern seems to support this. Although Catriona is skeptical other people are not, including Sean, and Brochan’s fighting skills are quickly put to use.

The storyline has time travel, mystery, light romance, and humor and sets the stage for future books. I enjoyed the book and definitely want to read more of the series.

KILTY AS CHARGED is the first book in the Kilty series. This series definitely needs to be read in the order of release.

This was a super-cute, funny, time-traveling, suspense romance. It is quirky and a little disjointed, but worth it for the laughs.

The dialogue is a little on the silly side, but that’s where most of the humor is. I loved it!

This is the first book I have read from the author, Amy Vasant. I would definitely read more of this series just for the humor. Plus, I want to know more about Catriona’s adoptive father, Sean and his relationship to the time-traveling.

recently read a short story in this series (Drop dead crime because Amy Vansant had a book in the collection and I love her Pineapple Port serise). I really enjoyed the collection and Amy's book in particular, I liked the idea for the series so I downloaded this book. Glad I did I really liked the unique story and loved the character's so much so that they made me laugh.
What kind of trouble can a time traveling Highlander get into when he wakes up to find himself stuck in morden times and on a movie set to boot. It puts a whole new spin on things we take for granted like toothpaste. Then when one of the only people he has meet is kidnapped he has no chose but to go on a rescue mission.
Really enjoyable and I had read it within a few hours, will definitely be looking to get the rest in the se

Kilty as Charged— Amy Vansant (30 chapters) July 19, 2019

This was a super fun, highly original and tightly written story. It read very fast and had characters that made me laugh. I also appreciated that the female protagonist suffered from anxiety attacks and the author did a good job of describing that particular scene.

Overall, VERY IMPRESSED with the whole story. A few typos and formatting errors but nothing too bad, and anyway, I also give indie writers more leeway with those issues.

The story begins with a Scottish legend where two fighters disappear at the end. It is about a woman who is a studio fixer who finds who she thinks is a extra who turns out to be a highlander. Hijinks proceed.Does he ge

I am going to continue this series. It's fun, original and reads pretty dang fast. Best rom-co-adventure book I have read in 2019 so far!

Hunky Time Traveler Meets His Match

Loved this novel and the two main characters, Catriona and Broch. Not quite up to Outlander books, but still entertaining and fun to read what Broch’s reactions is to what he finds in the 21st century. The main side character, Sean, is an interesting character, as well, and his story needs to be expanded a little more. Which brings me to the reason that I only gave this 4 stars instead of 5. The description of the book said this was not a cliffhanger and was a stand alone novel with the characters showing up on following books . I felt like it left you hanging with a lot of unanswered questions. I am sure I will read the rest of the series, but still disappointed that this book did not have a satisfying ending.

Kilty as Charged is an interesting, fast-paced cozy mystery with all the bells & whistles!

Definitely different than the other books I've read by Amy Vansant, but in a good way! Kilty As Charged has everything you could want: a very strong lead woman (Catriona); fast paced story line; lots of action; some huge Scotsmen; great dialogue and plenty of humor; a great cast of supporting characters; and even some time travel! A hilarious story told in a very interesting way. Throw in some mystery and intrigue and you've got yourself a great read. If you like an action-packed fast paced story line then this is definitely a cozy mystery for you!!! Amy Vansant has written a highly imaginative, mystery/love/humor filled novel that leaves you wanting to read the next in the series ASAP!!!

Catriona and Brochan's tagline reminds me of when i was 6 and a pupoy just "happened" to follow me home and i asked my Mom if i could keep him , i have never laughed so much at a bookthen i did this one as it reminded me of that day so much. The parallels were uncanny, they both ( the Scotsman and the puppy) needed a bath, they had no where to go and didn't know what was happening to them. Amy Vansant gave me a great paranormal romance as well as a happy look back into my past . If you like time travel books, paranormal romance, bad guys not getting their way and the good guys or in this case gal winning , this book is for you !! 4⭐'s for an excellent story that had me laughing, crying and and laughing all over again . I recevied a gifted copy and am voluntarily choosing to leave an honest and unbiased review.

Hilarious, suspenseful time travel story

This book starts with a fixer in Hollywood finding a Scotsman, who she believes is drunk but he is not. She takes them to her guardian. She doesn't know what to make of him because he seems so pretentious.

The characters are funny, dramatic, and relatable. The plot is unusual and dramatics because time travel is presented in the unique way. The explanation isn't given until the very end of the story.

I enjoyed the story and it kept me on the edge of my seat trying to find out how and why the main characters time traveled time travel. I highly recommend the book.

Kilty as Charged. Not just another romance.

Catriona's job as a Fixer for a movie studio brings all sorts of unusual situations her way.

One of those situations involves a hunky young man in a kilt.

A fast paced cross country adventure that involves drug running, violence, and some fantasy themes.

Some steamy encounters, that seem a lot more real than phony romance add to the fun. Ever had a dog fart ruin that what might be "moment"? Yup.

If you like action reads, but would prefer more laughs than gore, this might be a good read for you.

This is a funny story. The banter between the characters borders on crazy funny. The descriptions are nice to put the tale into some kind of perspective. There is intrigue, confusion and even a murder. I loved the fact Brochan enjoyed going about naked and frustrated Catriona. She felt like she talking to a third grader, he didn't know anything about this time and had lots of questions. I can't wait till the next bookI am sure it will be as good or better than this one.
I received this ARC and voluntarily reviewed it.

Step into the future of the 21st century. Where did you come from? 18th Century Glenorchy, Scottland...IMPOSSIBLE. What a great funny, action packed adventure, with a cliffhanger to make you want to read on. The characters are totally thought out and well written. I can not rave enough how much I loved reading it. Diana Galbadon move Jamie Fraser over, because Brochan is in the future wreaking havoc with our ladies :-)

Wow! I loved it.
Catrina is how I wished I was at that age, Broch is sweet and I loved how as he grew more comfortable in this era he teased Cat more.
The Doc made me laugh, Lulu was a scream and my favourite moment was when Broch was getting romantic and all of a sudden one of Lulu's girls 'stepped' in.
I had to muffle my laughter as it was about 1am, I just couldn't put it down.

I received a copy of this book from the author but any opinions are honest and my own.

Cute. Well, it was also funny and off color. Not racy or steamy. Some romance mixed with Scottish time travelers. Think Highlander and the Immortals but with quirkiness and a punchy female protagonist. Brachen ends up traveling through time and meeting Catriona. Their paths cross Thornton Campbell who is seeking Catriona’s boss, Sean or Ryft. There’s more than one Scottish Highland time traveler in the bunch. It’s quirky and fun, but lacks depth, tightness.

Real time-traveling Highlanders invade Hollywood

This was a very fun read about a female Hollywood fixer who finds a huge young man in a kilt passed out on a set. His appearance sets off a chain of events that result in some beatings and a couple deaths by the end of the story. In spite of the bad guys, there are several laugh-out-loud moments mostly caused by the misunderstandings of a time traveler. Other than that, the situations and characters were very believable.

An interesting if a slightly confusing premise -- at least at first-- Where you have a man dressed in a kilt and a Hollywood problem fixer that meet up with him out cold in nothing but a kilt and her wondering what she can do about it-- only to find that there is much more to the problem/story/man than meets the eye! An enjoyable story with a little bit of this and a little bit of that all blended together to create a wild story which needs to be continued in book 2. :(
