Dark. Depraved. Sacrilegious. Each shocking story from these bestselling, dark authors will deform a holy sacrament into a sensually wicked taboo. There is no sanctuary, no light - only darkness - a deep, clawing horror. The blood of the innocent will be shed in a twisted perversion of all you hold dear. You will search in vain for a happy ending. This is your only warning.
Lilith’s Revenge by Zoe Blake Last Rites by Alta Hensley Baptized in Eden by Jennifer Bene Communion by Celia Aaron Say Yes by Ashleigh Giannoccaro I’m Better Than You by SJ Cole She Came Before God by Addison Cain
Zoe Blake is the USA Today Bestselling Author of the romantic suspense saga The Cavalieri Billionaire Legacy inspired by her own heritage as well as her obsession with jewelry, travel, and the salacious gossip of history’s most infamous families.
She delights in writing Dark Romance books filled with overly possessive billionaires, taboo scenes, and unexpected twists. She usually spends her ill-gotten gains on martinis, vacations, and red lipstick.
A collection of dark, blasphemous stories with ambiguous endings most of them writen by women authors. A strong stomach will be needed in order to digest.
Lilith’s Revenge By Zoe Blake - 4 stars A new priest is tortured and tempted by a female demon and questions his faith to God and his true calling. What is true and what is an illusion? The truth hides in their names: Samael and Lilith. Very good story!
Last Rites By Alta Hensley - 2 stars An illness has spread in the world and most people have been transformed in mindless scratching zobies. Two women look for The Church, a mythical place in the heart of the infected city where they will be safe and free. Father Dane helps women to cross to the other side according to rumours. Well, I could not really connect to the story or the characters. It did not feel complete. And the women were completely idiots and TSTL.
Baptized in Eden By Jennifer Bene - almost 4 stars A woman wakes up disoriented and with no memories at a place called Eden that will soon become her personal hell. She will be starved, repeatedly raped, tortured and she will beg to die but she will just be cured and everything will start over again. Is this hell? Is it some kind of purgatory? Not a clear explanation is given, but the story is so well writen that I would love to read more about her torment and the reasons behind it.
Communion By Celia Aaron - 3 stars A poster perfect, powerful, rich, good looking CEO will not hesitate to use his personal assisant as a human sucrifice in order to gain more power. Not a bad story, but the women
Say Yes By Ashleigh Giannoccaro - 1 star An innocent girls gets married to an man from a strict religious cult. Disturbing story which I did not like because it includes .
I’m Better Than You By SJ Cole - 4 stars A woman in love needs to eliminate anyone who keeps her away from her perfect boyfriend. Crazy and dark story.
She Came Before God By Addison Cain - 3 stars Brainwashed virgin, filthy Pope, twisted and disgusting end result. Very very dark story.
So Twisted Sacrament: is an Anthology of wretched warped wonders straight from the unnatural imaginings of some of my most favourite authors. I myself was lucky enough to receive an Arc of Addison Cain's contribution to this mix "She Came Before God." As the story unfolded I watched with an almost Awe-filled sense of such morbid curiosity. Lulled at first into a misplaced sense of complicity it quickly became apparent that things here were not what they seemed and so very far from anyone's norm. and as the story progressed: we were very swiftly pulled down into the depths of a debased depravity: one that I could have scarcely imagined with an almost cavalier debauchery. This is abominable and disquieting and everything foul, unspeakable and ugly but I found myself unable to look away: glued with an almost horrified amazement to the unfolding Atrocity. Bravo to the author I am suitably distressed and disgusted with this twisted tale. I don't know whether to applaud or turn right around and flee far far away. This definitely does what it says on the tin: She Came before God is a holy horror of hypocrisy and there is nothing devout or devoted between these pages. This is pure non-con: forewarned is forearmed and I know I have said this before but please know your own limits. I do like to have my boundaries stretched and can definitely say in this instant they were taut with tension. I just need now to read the rest of the stories in this corrupt collection: can't wait. I voluntary reviewed an Arc of The Novella She Came Before God and this review is based on that particular story All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
Say Yes by Ashleigh Giannoccaro. This review is based solely on this story.
I swear to God. I think she's trying to end me with her words.
Okay so this is from the CULTured world and I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at what's going down. Everything fits even though it shouldn't in standard society. Basically I wouldn't want to meet up with this cult. It's hard to review this without giving away spoilers, but I will say that I absolutely loved one particular scene as I personally have never thought to end someone that way.
AND THE FACT THAT ELSE SOMEONE WAS FORCED TO START IT. Made me smile a bit.
Anyone that has read Ashleigh before won't need this warning, but if you haven't? When she goes dark, she goes DARK.
Communion lulls you into a false sense of security at first then it's depraved edges start to fray disabusing you of that initial notion. I loved every single minute of this dark short story. Even though I saw the twist coming it still brought me such glee, I thought it was bloody brilliant. I highly recommend it.

Last Rites by Alta Hensley There a pandemic on Earth, The Itch infection or Cinderella Disease has spread far and wide. People are turning into blood sucking zombies- Scratchers A throng of people swarmed the streets , blood frothing out of their open wounds , ragged tears in their skin from scratching that brought no relief. Fighting Scratchers, Killing people, running for their lives, they manage to reach the place only to discover.....😮 A mythical place that would help us find salvation. OK, when you get a bunch of authors who write dark anyway and give them the freedom to write the most twisted and sacrilegious stories ever, you get this book. And yeah, that's exactly what you get.
Addison Cain-She Comes Before God
I mean, wow, I don't even know what to say about this one. It's haunting and twisted and stuck with me for hours and hours. It disturbed me in ways I didn't know that I could be disturbed. But you know what? I loved it. It was perfectly Addison Cain. It made me want so, so much more. It also made me dread more to the story. Just perfect.
Zoe Blake-Lilith's Revenge
OMFG! Total mindfrak. I mean, I'm not sure what is and isn't real in this story. It's disturbed and disturbing. I want to say that I want more of Samael and Lilith's story, but I'm not sure that there is more for the story to go or that my brain would necessarily be able to keep track of it. As it is, I'm going to be spending days and days trying to figure everything out, and I know that I'm going to have so many different theories, depending on the hour or day.
Alta Hensley-Last Rites
Ummm... Yeah. Disturbing in the most disturbing way. So many things. All the things. I don't even know where to start with this one, really. There are things I'm going to be wondering about for a while, trying to make them make sense.
Jennifer Bene-Baptism in Eden
Oh my fraking god. That is all.
Celia Aaron-Communion
Love this story. Great byplay in between the characters. And while it's dark, it's not near as dark as the rest of the stories in this book. I love how it turns out. It went to places I didn't expect, and that's always so freaking awesome.
SJ Cole-I'm Better Than You
OMG, talk about cuckoo, Violet definitely fits that description. In fact, that description may not even be enough for her. Totally messed up. Totally great. I am going to need to read more about this character. For sure, even if she is insane AF. And creepy AF.
Ashleigh Giannoccaro-Say Yes
Cults are always scary and creepy, because we don't know what's going on in them. They think that they make perfect sense, but when you're an outsider looking in or converting into the religion, things get a lot weirder, which is what happens here. I know that I wouldn't want to live with their version of God and religion.
So, 7 great dark authors who were let loose and told to write something sacrilegious, and they succeeded so, so, so well.
By all that is unholy, this was a twisted story! I was lucky enough to get a chance at reading the ARC of Lilith’s Revenge by Zoe Blake and i can’t wait to read the other stories. Because if they’re even a little bit as good as Zoe’s,i need, really need,to read those as well!
I’m not going to say too much, only that not all is what it seems to be. For Samuel and for Lilith. What plays out where and who does what,it most certainly leaves you wondering what happened. I absolutely loved it!
I'll be honest, I struggled with how to rate this book. I started it late last night and was so drawn into the story that I read it all, morning alarms be damned. It totally held my attention through out and is really dark, really depraved and also really well written. It had non-con, which is always a given by this author, and which, despite having no eroticism and being stomach turning at points, was fine by me.
However this particular story just wasn't for me, though I can't specifically say why. The heroine had been brainwashed into obedience and subservience, so this left her very naive and almost weak. (Admittedly she demonstrated some strength during her 'confessions'.) But it left me feeling zero hope for this character, particularly when combined with that ending. An ending that suggested an ongoing cycle. Which seemed odd because surely she had the power to break the cycle, since her mother had willingly and happily pushed her to be chosen?
Anyway, despite not being for me, I can admire the story telling itself. In fact I'm almost tempted to consider rating this as 5 stars. Having literally slept on this (ie I read it last night), I'm actually feeling more positive about it and may well give this a re-read. I've obviously found my limit but I do still encourage you to read this if you enjoy walking on the very, very, very dark side.
*******
Baptised in Eden by Jennifer Bene
Whoa, this is a creepy and desolate read, and yet there is a little part of me who wonders if the character we meet at the end doesn't offer a little bit of 'salvation'. Not that salvation is to be found in the religious confines of Eden.
This story held me bound, unable to look away from its horror and its violence. I read through half closed eyes, as though I could block out the evil emanating from the words before me. I'm surprised I remember Danielle's name, since she is so very much a 'thing', a toy to be taken to the very edges of hell and then brought back from the sanctuary of death to suffer it all again. And again, and then over again.
This is a magnificent story, I loved it. Even better is that it won't be the last taste of Eden that we get. Yum, yum, I can't wait for more. Oh Danielle, bound in a world where the only hope is the hope of death.....
This is my review for Say Yes by Ashleigh Giannoccaro....
I love it when Ashleigh delves into the darkness and brings us a fantastically disturbing novella.
This story takes place from A Lump Of Coal/CULTured series. So we get a glimpse at a couple of side characters Ezra and Vashti.
Ezra is deep seated within the cult and as time progressed he is forced to take action with his own future and standing within the cult and amongst his elders.
Vashti is sweet, innocent and raised by nuns within a convent. A chance meeting Ezra and he sets the wheels in motion for his future.
Ashleigh doesn't hold back with the dark themes. In fact at one point you could say that she went pitch black. I loved every minute of the novella and I was wishing for a whole lot more but it is not to be. I will just have to wait for CULTured.
Review for Lilith's Revenge by Zoe Blake. 5 Stars
Is it a love story or a battle of pure revenge? Lilith is one baldy female and knows just how to put a man through the perverable wringer. With the wicked sex acts this story gives you one hell of a twist at the end. Zoe Blake is a new author for me and is definitely the new flavour of the month. I will be reading every dark, dirty word that she has written. Lilith has become one of my most favourite female main characters. Go Lilith you twisted bitch.
Seven layers of depravity, each author brings their own brand of darkness, a must read for the sick and twisted. I met a few new authors and enjoyed some of my favorites within this book, all kinds of wicked to be gobbled up. I highly recommend you heed the warnings. If you're like me, you'll love every story as much as the last.
I can't choose a favorite, I wouldn't try. The first book by Zoe Blake makes you think, a brain play. Well, played.
Alta Hensley brings horror and depravity to the next level with Last Rites. I laughed in sick delight, there's something really wrong with me.
Baptized in Eden will leave you begging for more. I'd love a full length novel within this world. Jennifer Bene has my attention.
Celia Aaron wins the best twist though. Communion made me smile with twisted glee. I did not see that coming.
Ashleigh G led me into a cult and made me a bit sick to my stomach with her nasty ways. Still shaking my head.
Stevie J Cole caught crazy and ran with it. Gotta check out White Pawn, I didn't nearly get enough of madness and obsession.
Addison Cane went all out, slapped me in the face and pulled my hair. I'll definitely be checking out her other works.
I have to end this review with one last thing. What is wrong with you, People? And why do I love it? Haha! Grab your night light because you need it.
Heed the warnings and prepare for the mind-f*ck. There are seven seriously twisted stories in this anthology, all of which contain serious triggers, so beware that this is a dark read, with some strong themes, and not for the faint of heart. However, for the brave, read on and enjoy the dark, compelling wonder of these stories. The stand-out stories for me were Alta Hensley's "Last Rites" and Jennifer Bene's "Baptized in Eden." "Last Rites" is fairly short and a serious gut-punch. This is obsession perfectly and horrifically described. I was shivering as I read the last chapter and it's a very rare story that makes me shiver, so kudos to the author. "Baptized in Eden" is a seriously dark brew of post-apocalyptic/paranormal horror that went in a direction I did not at all expect. It's a testament to the human spirit and the drive to survive at all costs. A compelling story and from the author's note, it looks like this could become a standalone, so that's something to really look forward to! That's not to say that the other stories in this anthology are not deliciously dark and wonderfully terrible. They are. Enjoy them all!
SHE CAME BEFORE GOD, by ADDISON CAINE This story made me glad I'm an atheist! I've always known that the dark underbelly of holier-than-thou exists, but having it put into words so mesmerizing, brings that belief uncomfortably, hypnotically into focus. Goose flesh and the need to shower long and hot!
BAPTIZED IN EDEN, by JENNIFER BENE A travesty of holiness, women suffering unimaginable horrors, inflicted by so called priests. One of them is picked out as special, used and abused, only to be revived again and again to start the suffering again. This is a claustrophobic, hopeless tale! Someone mentions the Spanish Inquisition, that had a predictable end for the victims, this hasn't!
LAST RITES by ALTA HENSLEY Two women on the way to a church that would bring them salvation from scratching zombies and being infected themselves. When they finally reach this sanctuary they are greeted by Father Dane. In short: The. Pox. On. Him !!!
This book blows my mind. I love dark and morbid things. Truly fascinates me. There is not much that can be written that pushes me to the point of return....or so I thought. This book might have found some of those buttons. I never thought that I would say that. I will keep adding to this as I read the various novellas. So far 5 for 5 for leaving me uncomfortable and finding my hard limit. 5/5 for these authors are the best of the best.
All of these authors and novellas are reminiscent of the anthology When the Dark Wins, only this time there is a theme. I hope that this continues and that they find darker and delicious (albeit an increase of therapy sessions needed) stories to tell based off of other themes. It could be like the book version of the television series, American Horror Story. If they haven't thought of this before, please consider it. I and all the other dark twisted souls would love it.
"She Came Before God" by Addison Cain This short novella might be one of my worst nightmares coming to life. Having been raised Catholic the majority of my life before I saw the light, this story and having a fascination with History made me question how close this might be to the truth. It wouldn't surprise me in the least, just saying. #sorrynotsorry
Addison seemed to get into the mindset of the time period when a woman's worth was dependent on many things; piety, purity, devotion, obeying the dictates of patriarchy, and obedience in order to ultimately become a wife and mother. She posits what happens when there are additional players in the grand scheme of where or what happens to the woman. How does the woman accept that? Religion has and continues to influence the lives of many people especially in this story and how this "tradition" continues with each daughter. All I could think about at the end of this short story is Holy Effing TITFIRE followed by how accurate is DNA 123 because there are going to be ALOT of screwed up family trees for all those genealogy peeps out there.
Imagine yourself sitting on the precipice of the abyss contemplating life with no intention of going over and then having someone shove you from behind. This story is the precipice in this case and Addison just shoved you over, cackling the entire time, because she knows you will be pushed out of your comfort zone. Be prepared.
This story just proved that I am definitely more at home in Hell with the Devil than dealing with Catholic Bishops. I am thinking because the Devil has no qualms admitting that he is bad and that Religious people such as these are acting as "God" when they are in fact, worse than the devil they condemn.
I LOVE this author because she has a gift at writing ANYTHING and make it intriguing juxtaposed with deeply disturbing. This story is no different. Generally, these short stories turn into something bigger (whether a full story or a series), in this case, this is one that I hope doesn't continue as it was out of my comfort zone. However, even saying that I know I would still read it because this author could rewrite a cereal box and I would read it.
"Last Rights" by Alta Hensley This was a very interesting read. It definitely was not a romance. It was dark, gritty, and raw. It left me questioning what was real and what was imaginary. Still, at the end of the story, I am still not sure which was which. This author is always good at portraying a story or scene in a way that draws the audience in. This is very different than her other works so please be aware before reading. As mentioned before, this is not a story with sparkles, sweetness, and love.
"LILITH'S REVENGE" by Zoe Blake Sweet holy titfire... did the authors all get together trying to see who could come up with what will screw with the minds of the readers the most? Or see how far they could push their audience before they will need to sleep with the light on or need to increase their therapy sessions? If so then it is a toss-up who the winner is because this author wrote a gripping and haunting tale that will leave you questioning what is real and what is just a figment of your imagination. It posits if there is a God, how far will he go to test your faith? Or worst, If Satan exists to what length and what tools will he use to tempt you to come to the Darkside. Be prepared there is no HEA here. NONE. Kudos to this author. Holy hellacious titfire...
"Baptized in Eden" by Jennifer Bene Horror at its finest. I vacillated between wanting more and wanting the sweet torture to end for the h of the story. I am not sure what that says about me. It posits whether there is a heaven or hell. It also makes me wonder who the true "demons" are. As society and history have shown, Followers of God and Satan have good and bad people. That is because ultimately humans have a tendency to be morally bankrupt to satisfy their own desires. This story is going to stay with me for a while as I process all of the amazing symbology and hidden elements and message.
"Communion" by Celia Aaron Well, I didn't see this coming when the novella started. I thought I could see how this was going to end. Oh, how wrong I was. Sick, disturbing, but deliciously decadent. It doesn't have a happily ever after...or does it? Well played Ms. Aaron. Well played. It takes a lot to truly surprise me but this novella did. In today's day and age and with what is going on in Society (particularly the US) it is quite refreshing and needed. Although this was unusual in how it got to that outcome.
"Say Yes" by Ashleigh Giannoccaro Cults freak me out. Their devotion to God and a specific interpretation of what they perceive is his lesson is always so extreme. Generally speaking, it is often whackadoodle. This story confirms that I am right in thinking this. I sat here shaking my head as I was reading it while telling myself, "this is why you NEVER drink the Kool-aid." EVER. The author walked a fine line between making this intriguing (and a little sweet) and creepy as all hell. This is the first read from this author and I will be looking for more of her work in the future.
"I'm Better Than You" by SJ Cole Well, this is a story that takes being the best to a whole other level. It reminded me of the movie Misery, albeit an even crazy person than what was portrayed by Kathy Bates. This ending totally creeped me out. TOTALLY creeped me out and made me wonder how this main character hadn't been locked away in an asylum because there is crazy and then there is sleep upside bat s* cray cray. This story was really different than the rest because the others novellas were more focused on religion and this one did not. I will have to mull this one over and see if I can find the connection.
This story is amazing. It's dark, it's twisted, it's omg I can't believe what I just read good. It's that story, that makes you cringe and gasp at what's happening.
Say Yes is about a group of people, that believe in what they think is right and want everyone and all to fall in line. They want to have all the blessings, but go about it the wrong way. This story is one of Ashleigh's best and happy I read it.
LILITH'S REVENGE by Zoe Blake (5+⭐)
Father? Sinner? Madman? Those are the questions you will be asking yourself after you've finished this story. Is he or isn't he?
Lilith's Revenge is twisted. You will thank you'll know how's it's going to end, but nope. I didn't see that ending coming and was shocked. I like the story, it's a good 5 star read for the start of this anthology.
LAST RITES by Alta Hensly (3⭐)
This story is okay. It is strange and intriguing, to read. This that story, that maybe it's hope at the end, but nope! It's only life.
BAPTIZED BY EDEN by Jennifer Bene (4⭐)
This story was so disturbing. All the debauchery and sinister things that happens is crazy. I can't even begin to tell you how I feel, it's so dark, twisted and cringe worthy.
COMMUNION by Celia Aaron (5+⭐)
When you think of dark and twisty, you think of Celia. Her books always always leave you with your mouth hanging open. This story is no different. She delivered on what this anthology is about. It has the right amount of crazy with a twist. I love it!
I'M BETTER THAN YOU by S.J.Cole (4⭐)
Wow just wow! I can't believe what I just read. The craziness of this story is amazing, nothing gets past and nothing goes unpunished. This story is so deranged, that it makes it laughable.
SHE CAME BEFORE GOD by Addison Cain (5+⭐)
This story broke me a little. The things that happens is sad. To live with a hatred from others, and than to be thrust into the hands of devils, upon devils, is heart breaking. The sins that happens in this story, makes me want to find everyone in It and crack their heads open, especially the one who was acting nice and trust worthy.
FOR GIVE ME FATHER FOR I HAVE SINNED.... I HAVE READ THIS ANTHOLOGY OF ALL THIS DARK, TWISTED, HATEFUL, THINGS THAT ARE AMAZING. EACH STORY HAS AN EPIC STORYLINE, AND GREAT CHARACTERS. SOME OF THEM MADE ME CATCH A TEAR, LAUGH, CRINGE, AND SCRUNCH MY FACE.
I APPLAUD THE AUTHORS OF THEIR WRITING. TO MAKE A STORY, AND HAVE THE READER WILLING TO MAKE SACRIFICES FOR THAT STORY IS TERRIFIC.
TWISTED SACRAMENT, IS EVERYTHING THAT THE AUTHORS SAID IT WAS. IT'S A SINFUL READ BUT SO AMAZING!
Say Yes by Ashleigh Giannoccaro, is a mind blowing read! The story of Ezra and Vashti is not for the faint of heart. This is a dark story, but absolutely amazing. Vashti is a young girl who grew up in a convent with nowhere to go. Ezra met Vashti once and made a decision regarding her and nothing will get in his way. From start to finish, this authors words and descriptions of the characters kept me entranced and I read it in one sitting. I could not put it down. This is truly an incredible read!
Zoe Blake’s story, Lilith’s Revenge. Wow! Never saw that coming. Samael takes his holy vows, but starts to doubt if it was the right path for him. A vision keeps coming to him to make him wonder. I really don’t want to say anymore as I don’t want to give anything away. But let me tell you, you won’t believe how it ends. Absolutely incredible!
Last Rites by Alta Hensley is creepy, but oh so good. It kept me captivated and the ending will blow your mind!
Baptized in Eden by Jennifer Bene really makes you wonder about Heaven and Hell. The descriptions in this book are truly vivid and you will hold onto your heart throughout in the hopes of something good. You will need to read this to find out about good and evil.
Communion by Celia Aaron will hold you captive, literally! You never know what kind of boss you are going to get, and the ending was completely not what I expected! Loved it!
I’m Better Than You by SJ Cole was definitely interesting. Never cross Violet is all I can say! Because you never know what will happen. A definite page turner!
She Came Before God by Addison Cane was unreal. This story blew my mind and it will blow yours too!
This is an Anthology of dark and warped delights straight from the most extraordinary unnatural writings from some of my most favorite authors.
******
Last Rites by Alta Hensley There a huge pandemic on Earth called The Itch infection or also known as the Cinderella Disease. It has spread very far and so wide. People are turning into things out straight outta the movies--blood sucking zombies- known as Scratchers. The story takes the reader into a post apocalyptic world that really only has women, who are trying to make it and find salvation. I want to let it be known that this story is not for the faint of heart. If you are looking for HEA, then know there is no happy ending. So, if you like dark, short easy reads that will shock you and scare the bejeezus out of you, then this is the perfect story for you . My Rating: 4.6 stars *****
***** Lilith’s Revenge by Zoe Blake Holy Mother of God!!! What a total mindscrew. I dont know how to write this and not give the plot away with spoilers so all I am going to say is Zoe Blake is a total rockstar and I would love to see this novella developed into a full story or at least would want more of Samael and Lilith's story because the chemistry, the feels, the intensity is so there. I would love more of this couple. What an incredible and amazing story My Rating: 4.9 stars
*** I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***
Lilith’s revenge by Zoe Blake 3.5🌟🌟🌟 Short, dark, twisted and for me a little hard to follow. I didn’t really get it at all until the author’s note at the end when I then googled Lilith and Samuel.
Last Rites by Alta Hensley 5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Short dark and twisted. A walking dead/bdsm gone wrong. Not at all what I was expecting it was fantastic!
Baptized in Eden by Jennifer Bene 4.5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Dark n twisted hellish situation. I wish we knew the why Danielle was in that hellhole and if she did in fact breed a monster
Communion by Celia Aaron 5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This has been my favourite in the collection so far. Wish it had of been longer! Two words PLOT TWIST!! Did not see that coming at all. Epic.
Say yes by Ashleigh Giannoccaro 4🌟🌟🌟🌟 That was totally unexpected. I don’t really even know what to say. It was good, just different. Kind of a mix of the days of old with some creativity added in, I think.. I hope lol.
I’m better than you by SJ Cole 5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I am totally shocked at this one. Completely different then what I expected just based on the title and how it started. Had me hooked and wishing it was longer!!
She came before god By Addison Cain 4.5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I want to give it 5 stars but that last bit made my stomach turn. Only because I can see it being that way in real life and that just freaks me out
Last Rights, written by Alta Hensley, is a short story, in the Twisted Sacraments Anthology. This short was creepy, shocking and down right disturbing, but somehow I was unable to put it down. The storyline takes us to a post apocalyptic world that seems to only have women, who are trying to survive and find salvation. This story is not for the faint of heart, there is no happy ending. So, if you are looking for a short easy read that will shock you to your core and send shivers down your spine, look no further. Please note this review is only for Last Rites. ***I kindly received an ARC of this book by way of Booksprout. I was not contacted, asked or required to leave a review in order to read this book. I received no compensation, financial or otherwise. This is my honest review.***
This is the first time that I had to take a day after reading the book before I sat down to write my review. This book definitely pushed every boundary I have. While I am usually fairly liberal with seeing romance even in the darkest of places, this book is NOT a romance in any shape of form. The events described in the book are harrowing, most of the characters are despicable, evil, or both, there is no light here only darkness lives on these pages. Addison Cain's ability to suck the reader into a dark and depraved world and keep him there long after the book has been finished is uncanny. Her writing is beautiful even when the subject matter is anything but.
This collection of twisted religious tales is....odd, to say the least. There are a couple of really good stories, a couple of not so good ones and some that left me wondering what on earth goes through an author's mind to think that up! Honestly, i spent the majority of this book with my forehead furrowed and my brain in melt down. In all honesty im not sure what i was expecting from this anthology, some authors ive read before and adore, some ive never come across ams some ive heard of but not delved into their worlds. Even though i didnt enjoy every story, the majority of them were really written and my interest in the authors' other books has been piqued.
Lasts Rites by Alta Hensley: Wow! This one was so beautifully depraved and twisted. It was like a nightmare brought to life. And I loved every single page!!
Say Yes by Ashleigh Giannoccaro: A very dark & twisted story. I expected nothing less from her and yet she was still able to shock & horrify me in the best possible way.
This is a fabulous collection of stories by some of the greatest authors. I'm looking forward to reading the other stories in this anthology.
First let me say this I WANT MORE! I loved this short story about dark magic and sacrifices! Ted is a sexy and powerful and Cate is beautiful and has eyes only for Ted. Ted is power hungry and has a plan. This book was deliciously dark and held for a surprise at the end. I can only hope that we get a book out of this dark story!
She Came Before God: oh. My. God. This story was so disturbing and all consuming. I couldn’t stop reading it. What a mind you have Addison Cain. I am grateful. I am always trapped by her words and love anything she writes. This will disturb you in the very best way. Now, I’ll definitely need to read the entire book.
When you put seven authors that can write extremely dark stories you get an amazing Anthology. All of these stories are dark and not for the faint of heart. Lilith's Revenge-5 Last Rites-4 Baptized In Eden-4 Communion-5 Say Yes-4 I'm Better Than You-4 She Came Before God-4 My favorite was Lilith's Revenge. I will be reading more books by Zoe Blake.
I gave this anthology 3 Stars because I liked half of the stories and half of them were not so good. My faves were Litith's Revenge, Baptized by Eden, Communion, and I'm Better than You. All the stories were disturbing, but some of them were even too much for me. And I feel like I can stomach quite a bit. Last Rites was just not a good story in my opinion. I didn't enjoy it all. Say Yes was so sick and disturbing I can't even believe I read it. The final story She Came Before God was so sick and depressing I couldn't wait for it to be over.
I question myself on what is really dark and disturbing, the kind that gives me nightmares ,what’s uncomfortable and sad and what is just plain repulsive. I didn’t find anything in this collection of books to be super dark, but I did find most of them made me sad and one of them made me nauseous.
Spoilers ahead!
Lilith’s Revenge By Zoe Blake - 2 stars A newly ordained priest battles with temptations and succumbs to its lure. The author makes it clear this is about Samael and Lilith. Who are they you ask? Well I did my research, aka Google’ d it and long story short ,found out Lilith is the first wife of Adam. She dumps him due to his misogynistic behavior and is punished for not going back to him. Tada! Adam gets a new wife and Lilith becomes Samael’s consort. Samael is also either a demon or archangel depends on source. What I don’t understand is why Samael is being punished.
Spoiler – this is either the reality or the reality according to Samael the priest. Mental illness makes me sad as fuck ☹
Last Rites By Alta Hensley – 1.5 stars Zombies. Itchy , scratchy zombies. Women seeking deliverance, get raped by priest and go to the afterlife and become zombies. Btw, I am glad that I don’t live in the US of A. Apparently the area is a hotspot for all sorts of zombie apocalypse.
Baptized in Eden By Jennifer Bene - almost 3 stars Rape, rape and more rape. Brutal beatings, starvation and being brought back to life at the brink of death. What’s with all the priests being such creepy rapists? Well written story, but feel this is either a prologue or part of a larger story. So will be watching out for the full story.
Communion By Celia Aaron – 3.5 stars Demon sacrifice for riches galore! The villains are good looking and actually care to sex up their sacrifices good. Loads of oral here, I almost got excited. This was the only story where the ‘rapee’s got some pleasure. But there is a twist, I saw it coming and it was delicious. I lOL’d and had to explain the synopsis to my husband and he kind of edged away from me, dare I say with a look of fright…muahahah.
Say Yes By Ashleigh Giannoccaro – 2.5 star Cult. Virgin. Prophet. Stoning a woman to death and mom/son incest. Hated all the characters. Would have liked to smother the ‘main characters’ to death. Would have whistled merrily afterwards. Nicely written though, so may catch the other stories in the series..
I’m Better Than You By SJ Cole – 3 stars Crazy obsessed chick. Manwhore who nails everything that isn’t nailed down. Well written.
She Came Before God By Addison Cain – 2.5 stars
A leper. Yes that’s right. Impregnation Incest with a leprous pope. Made me what to vomit. There! that’s my limit. Note: Addison Cain is a terrific writer. I have read her other books, except the red queen, which I just couldn’t get into. I do enjoy her books and find her style of writing is both evocative and perverse. I am a pervert. “hangs head down in shame”
