The Demons' Muse #2

For Love of Evil

Rate this book
Alternate cover edition of ASIN B07K2Y9Y84

I'd always thought bad boys were sexy, but this was taking it to the extreme.

Clearly, I had issues. After becoming obsessed with Death, the angels came for me, and then I ended up in Hell. Oddly, that sounds a lot worse than it really is. Don't get me wrong, the demons in this place are pretty annoying, but there are a few perks.

At least four of them.
Satan, Lucifer, Beelzebub, and Samyaza.

I left everything behind to help change the world. My big plan was to fight back, to stand up for what I believed in. Instead, I'm useless. A failure.

I thought we were supposed to be a united front. I thought my guys would be at my side for the rest of eternity. I thought we had something special. Unfortunately, it's not going to be that easy. If I want this, I'm going to have to fight for it.

But the heart wants what it wants,
And mine is rooting for evil.

I loved the first book and waited awhile for this book. However I was greatly disappointed with the plot and relationships between the characters. Sia's constant concern over the guys was annoying even when they tell her time and time again that it's alright to be interested in all of them. And I knew from the first book that there'd be mm however I thought it would be within their group. However Ronwe is added into the mix and becomes "exclusive" with Lucifer who I thought would be in Sia's group. I thought it would be centered with their group not have Sia be a side piece...
Example: Convo between Ronwe and Lucifer
"You and Sia?" I asked, reaching up to clasp his arms. "Luke, you deserve this. I'm so happy for you!"
He swallowed. "And us?"
"I am not going to let you get rid of me, if that's what you mean. You can have her on the side, and then tell me all about it."
UMMMMMM might as well just keep Sia with Nick, Sam, and Bel and leave Ronwe and Lucifer together separately. This was so disappointing I really enjoyed the first book and the relationship between Sia and the guys. I'm not sure if I'll read the next one, might take some time to come back to this series.

Hoo boy, this one was nothing like the first one.

It was divided in two, the first half being super heavy and then tapering off and coming back to what I liked so much in Book #1.

The first, heavy part deals with realism. Which, on its own would have been just fine. It also goes on to squat firmly in obsessive compulsive territory. Which, once more it is fine. Even combined they are something tolerable. Yet somehow the ball was lost in the start and that made it heavy.

I'd get it in my head that I'd feel something and then refuse to acknowledge any other emotion until it reached critical mass.

But there's hope for it yet! After a while we got back to business!

Not a lot of things happened plot wise, but we got stuff. Enough to crawl forward. There was character development, more than plot development.

We get a Lucifer POV and it was my favourite! I adore him! Granted he needs to develop a bit more. His relationship with Ronwe was fucking adorable.

The new recruit: Ronwe. He is such a sweetheart! I like how he is a nice balance to Sia and the rest. And I love that we get a disabled rep in him!

And
Dragons

Not anywhere near enough but still ♥

Ugh, words fail me. Probably cause I'm hungry.

If I had to attach a picture to convey this book, which I don't have to do but I will do cause I can, it would be this one (image is large so open in new tab for maximum exposure):

Awaiting MonsterBook #3. Yes, all five books in the series will be huge. Yay for us, I guess? (ヅ)

Is this ok?

It is? Are you sure?

But I'm just worried if this is ok.

But...Is this ok?

Ok. You said it's ok, but I just can't... I'm worried if it's ok.

I summed up the first 200 or so pages for you.

The good:
Plot

Side romance between Luke and someone other than Sia. (Can't give it all away ladies.)

The bad:
Repetitive conversations, history, and life summaries

Frustrating heroine who can't understand "demon culture" and the whole legion harem dynamic despite being told several, several times that it is normal and ok to have multiple partners.

Slow burn with Sam, Luke, Bel, etc. The lack of confidence between some of them frustrated me to hell.

Okay so I really liked it but it was missing something for me to be a 4 Stars read. I loved Ron he is my cinnamon roll, he is just so freaking cute!!! I also just wanted Sia and Luke to get together and also for Bel and Sia to get together too. It was a really enjoyable book but it was missing something for me and I hope the next book has it and I can give it a 4 or 5 Star.

I still liked this book, too. The world was still interesting, and the characters are interesting enough.

The problem is the same problem I had with the first book. The talking! Oh my goodness, these characters never tire of rehashing every single thought they have. They talk in circles and talk again and then after you think the problem has been solved the same exact issue is discussed once more. It's exhausting.

At the same time, sometimes they talk all around a topic you can kind of almost understand that the author wants you to understand, but they never actually say it out loud. They just talk around a topic and the author tells you they give each other meaningful looks and you are just supposed to infer. However, in order for a reader to infer, information has to be available. It just wasn't in this book. So, sometimes, I'd be reading and rereading and rereading the same conversations without understanding what the heck they wanted to accomplish.

Additionally, the author has planned and planned and planned some more when it comes to the world she has built. She wants us to know how well she planned everything, so there is a lot more physics and science and stuff to explain the world. That is also pretty exhausting.

Like, in the Kate Daniels series by Andrews, I know that technology and magic shift back and forth. Sometimes Kate's world has magic and sometimes it has technology. It's a pendulum that swings back and forth. I understand that, because it is explained pretty simply, and I am not stupid. The authors never told me the science behind why magic and tech can't exist together, or why it is a pendulum. They just told me what the deal was and I accepted it as the reader. There were no exhausting exposition-y dialogues to read/skim over.

However, maybe you like lots and lots and LOTS of explanations about how and why and when and wherefore. If so, you'll probably rate this book higher. I liked the book. I want to read the next three as they are released. I like the characters. I dislike the repetition and the spoon-feeding, especially since the spoon-feeding is really way too much on the spoon and it just makes a mess.

Good book

First I want to say I really enjoyed the concept, world and characters this author created. In particular, the characters pulled me in and I wanted to know more about them and how they related to each other and this world.

That being said this was only a three star novel for me because it spent so much time hashing and rehashing the same ideas/information. It was tiresome. I wanted to scream we get it or you’re preaching to the choir. After all, the people who would read this book are likely to believe it’s okay for consenting adults to love and lust after who they want without restrictions. They are also likely to believe it’s wrong to define and malign people on the basis of traits such as species, gender, or preference. I wish more real estate had been devoted to action and the actual plot. I wish the author would hire a content editor because tackling the same issues repeatedly with multiple people in the legion and then having the secondary couple tackle similar issues was irritating. Drawing the story out this way did not make the story more intriguing, complex or add to the reader’s enjoyment. Overall, this was a good book and I’d like to discover what lies ahead so it was definitely worth the read.

DNF 80% - FALSE ADVERTISING! This is not RH in any way, shape, or form.

I’m mad I started reading this series because the more I read, the less like a reverse harem it becomes. This is more like a bunch of people who have sex, but relationships are primarily MM, leaving the female out of everything. I don’t like these types of books. The males treat the FMC like an interloper in their love story. Sometimes, it even seems like they resent her presence. So I quit reading.

Side Note: Two guys in her ‘harem’ actually refer to FMC as a ‘side piece.’ Hell no! Since when has the lead female in an RH been relegated to the role of ‘side piece’?! I want nothing more to do with this story.

Two immortal beings have had a loving relationship for yearssssssssss, even though one wasn't enough for the other. Enter a demanding Muse who should be named Mary Sue and have her marks made to look like special snowflakes!!

"Oh guys it's really hot you're making out for me and love each other. And while I screw around as much as I want, I don't want you guys to touch each other without me around. BTW I'm also adding more people to my harem, but you still can't touch without me. MKAY?"

Nope, not okay!!!

DNF @ 15%

I was iffy when starting this book because while I really enjoyed the concept, the first book lacked execution IMO. I only got 15% into this book and I knew I would have the same problem as I did with the first book. The dialogue just kept going around in circles and I felt like we weren't going anywhere new. So I decided to read some spoilers for the rest of the series and found that the relationships were not heading in the direction that I thought and the relationships are a big part of enjoying any book for me so I decided to DNF the whole series.

*Spoilers for the whole series below.*

Ahhw man... I really wanted to like this series at least as much as I like the other two that I've read from this author, but I don't.

We're going in circles on certain themes and the overarching storyline is moving at a glacial pace. I'll finish book three since I bought the omnibus, but I don't know after that...

Pretty Good Continuation of the Series

First off - I love all of Auryn's books and own them all. Even though I LOVE the double POVs (Sia and Luke) - I kinda felt this book was more conversations and relationship/Legion building than actual action.

All of the males in the Legion are still telling her that it's okay to be with multiple males. I get that she has a past and everyone always leaves her - but when she is constantly being told over and over (and shown) that it's okay to be with / attracted to multiple males - she keeps doubting them and slut shames herself. The inner slut shaming monologue got boring over time. None of the males in the Legion shown any jealousy or w/e when she hugged or kissed or w/e another of the guys - yet it took her so long to be okay to accept one more.

Now the relationship/Legion building felt real. I love Lukes POV and felt like we got to know him better. We also got to know the rest of the Legion plus her mentor Ronwe better. The love scenes were both hot and sweet - which I liked how the males were caring about giving and making sure it was a good time.

Don't get me wrong - this is a good book and you will have a book coma. I just got bored with Sias inner monologue and was looking forward to reading Lukes POV (when this is supposed to be more of a RH than a Poly series). I can't wait to see what happens next in the series and if we will get more POVs.

Spoilers:

One of the main plot hole?/issues that I had was if the First Legion is so powerful and one of hell's rule is you can protect what is yours/your property - then why didn't they just redrain the demons who caused all the issues way before it happened? Especially the trio that wanted to be the new leaders. The First Legion kept saying how much powerful they are and no one else compares to them - then why don't they just drain them and play clean up. I felt like they spent more time trying to help Sia get over slut shaming herself or spending time with her that they could of prevented it all by being more proactive. Especially since Nick said how important it was to be there to protect her and how he reacted once Sia locked the demons in hell.

I am surprised that they didn't stalk the Angels more and that Sia didn't want to meet her mother. Nick's whole blow up felt weird too.

I know that there is probably a reason why everything happened the way it did - because this is Auryn we are talking about - but Idk, I just felt like the book was missing something and the events seemed weird to me.

I’m gonna be this b*tch… and I’m sorry. But if a publisher didn’t get enough gall to invest in a book between the release date until 3+ ish years later to release an audio version, it boggles my mind!! I mean that in the mindset knowing there are 3 other books in this series and they’re not in audio format. And the past two were narrated to beautifully!!

I want more but I’d bet money the next book won’t release until 6 months from now and I don’t think I’ll care enough to buy it. And lately I don’t have time to sit down with properly reading a book.

This has been a great series thus far... But im hung up on publication dates. Considering this series concluded several years ago, why not release all books (separately 🤑) at once in audio? Why leave me with the most snooze-worthy cliffhanger, ever? Because I know the series is badass because I read spoilers!

It’s the book version of a “Netflix” releasing an episode of a series biweekly (why?), despite the series airing on network television 3+ years ago.

Let’s hope I don’t forget about the series, because I feel I’d really appreciate the rest of it like I have so far.

Trust me, this IS a reverse harem series. Auryn Hadley does a slow build. She doesn't do full on orgies until the 4th book, you dirty girls. If you are not into man on man action this series is not for you, also not if Jesus is your co-pilot.
There was some of that back and forth "You're too good for me" kind of stuff but not enough to turn me off. There's plenty of action and mystery to keep me going.
Sienna is an inexperienced, insecure, bible belt Okie girl. The author tried to reinforce that through reiteration so that readers could understand the experience she is going through, because it's so diametrically opposed to her upbringing. You can't change someone's  self image in 6 months.
Book 1 was told solely in Sienna's POV. Book 2 is told in Sienna's and Lucifer's POV. As the harem builds so do the POV's in each book.

Reverse Harem New Adult Type

I enjoyed this one more than the first one after the angst over polyamory was worked out. I would've preferred to whittle down some of the repetitive, less mature dialogue and increase action and plot. How about more world building?

Overall, this was fun but more magic would be more fun. Sex scenes were decent and moved the plot along. I'm glad we found out more about some of the characters and their histories. If you wanted more action and plot and a lot less angst, I highly recommend you try her ROTI series. It's one of my Favorites.

Whew.

Okay, I've got to be honest here: I almost didn't make it through the first third. Because in that measly 30%, we had the same conversation - Sia angsting over the polyamory, whether Nick would leave her, whether she's a slut, etc - about 10 times. It was in every chapter, and it was the point of most of them. She had this conversation with pretty much every guy, more than once. In every one, it ended with her "beginning to understand" and then 2 pages later, we were having the conversation.

It turned Sia from a character I liked very much in book 1, into a character I wanted to punch in the throat. It was unbelievably tedious.

Finally, after conversation 348i7589457608 at about the 37% mark, it seemed to ACTUALLY be resolved, and then wasn't really brought up again. And then we got into the plot - actual plot! - and I liked the book very much.

Also, I don't disagree, at all, with what Sia did on Hell. Fuck all those guys. And Nick can stop being a dick about it.

That is all.

THIS. SERIES. IS. AMAZING. I don’t think I can say that enough. Can we talk about look for a hot minute? Cause I am so loving him. He’s the bad boy that you know has the sweet center. I am here for more on him and to learn how he ticks. The world building and the characters are ones that you will love and want to reread over and over.

Great novel, amazing narration

This is another series of Auryn Hadley that has me hooked. The world building, the way the relationships build throughout the books. I love how Sia is getting more confident in her abilities and the relationships with the demons in her legion and I am very curious to see what will happen in the next book!

Sia is gaining more knowledge about her powers, about the demons and angels and also about her relationship with Nick and the rest of the legion. She's trying to understand their thoughts process and adapt, but she still finds it hard to let go of her human limitations. In this book she also finds out more about who she really and who she wants by her side.

As book 1, book 2 didn't capture me into its pages, so I don't think I will continue this series.

Wonderfully Fantastic Story

I have become such an Auryn Hadley fan over the last year or so. This book is a prime example of why. Once more this gifted author has created a magical universe, with a complex and well thought out magical system, filled it with incredibly detailed and real characters who have rich emotional histories and had them go on a mighty adventure through life. I honestly thought I’d never find a series I loved as much as Rise of The Iliri, but this one is a very very strong competitor.

In this book we get to see more of the way magic works and in particular how Sia uses it differently from everyone else. She is trying to learn how to use magic like a demon because her great-grandfather wishes her to learn that way, but it just doesn’t seem to be working, mainly because of the science she is supposed to understand in order to do magic like a demon. Sadly Sia is an artist and not a scientist.

The Legion is all living in Hell to keep Sia hidden from the angels whilst she is training. Ronwe has been helping her to understand magic in a way that her great-grandfather seems unable to do, mainly because he understands Sia and the way she thinks a little better. He becomes closer to the Legion because of his friendship with Sia.

One of the things the Legion has been doing is waking up drained demons with the aether they have reaped on Earth. Luke makes a mistake and wakes the wrong demon, one who has been drained for millions of years. His views are archaic and he is a dangerous enemy.

The Legion is trying to avoid the angels, keep Sia safe, and also protect the demons. It’s a hard line to walk, even when you have wings for balance.

I got incredibly absorbed in this story. Auryn Hadley writes such wonderful tales that suck you in and never let go. The characters are rich and have so many nuances to them they feel like they could walk off the page. Having such wonderful characters means you are fully invested in their happiness, sadness, success and failure. You can’t stop worrying about them, even when you stop reading. They feel real.

I really hope the next book in this series comes out soon, because it really is gripping and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I wanted to like this book much more than I did. I really enjoyed the first book, but I wasn't quite sure how the storyline would translate to 5 books. I discovered it here--this is just too dense and could have benefited from editing. The first one was dense too, but I found it interesting and fresh. Here, the information is repetitive.

We get Lucifer's POV here as well as Sia's, but that means that if Sia experiences something in her chapter that then it's all reiterated in Lucifer's. Plus there is A LOT of discussion of how their harem will work and how everyone is okay with it. If this was real life, that amount of conversation and sharing of feelings would make sense, but it became tedious here. When this book ends, she is in a relationship with 2 of them, but they have all discussed often that she will have relationships with the rest. But it didn't happen yet. There is also more plot build-up here that didn't come to fruition yet. We learn more about everyone's pasts, the different societies, and lots of physics talk, but there are now just more questions than answers.

I am not sure that I will read the rest of the books in the series. The characters are interesting, but this one was hard to get through. I'll at least need a break before jumping into the next one.

Tropes: reverse harem; fantasy with some realistic settings; feisty Muse female meets 4 (or maybe 5) supernatural males; graphic m/m action; crude language throughout; threesome; familial rejection and abandonment issues; growing up in the foster system; characters in peril; prejudice; LOTS of mythos/lore; questioning ideologies and mythologies; war and war tactics; mentions of murder, torture, slavery, and using others for personal gain.

Heat rating: HOT—sex scenes throughout with explicit language, which adds to the overall story and relationships

Book #2

☑️ Demons, angels, humans,...
☑️ Different dimensions
🆗 Different perspective regarding: theology, religion, myths & physics (a bit complex, confusing and inconsistent at times)
☑️🆗 Aether manipulation: travel, creating things and shields, reality manipulation...
☑️ Complex world building
🆗 Introduction to a new world
☑️ Handsome, powerful alpha males
🆗 Great, coming into power FMC: not a pushover but also not perfect; a bit of special snowflake
🆗 MM scenes
🆗⬇️ RH romance: slow going but with inconsistent explanations
🔥 Smut
🆗 Enemy races at war since forever
❌ Huge, huge age gap
❌ A bit misogynistic and with archaic views at times

❗ Mentions: slavery, taking against someone's will, death (not MCs), reaping, draining people of their life force, disfiguration

***

The angels are after Sienna.

They want to control all the worlds in order to get as much aether as they want.

So Sienna and the guys decide to go to Daemin, the world of demons, a world with only males and several have never seen a female nor a human.

With a lot of demons still depleted of aether, the first legion has a lot of work to do to wake them up.

All the while, Sienna has to learn how to work aether and how to use her powers as a muse.

Growing closer to the guys is a plus, but it is difficult to navigate all the attention and expectations with a target on their backs.

***

Notes:

🔸World building

Complex.

It mixes several myths, religion, different types of beings with a huge dose of physics.

It does get a bit confusing trying to understand all the different limits and characteristics of this universe.

And I am not going to pretend to have caught it all, but here it goes:

• There are different dimensions that are connected to each other, corridors that allow the characters to navigate unseen and quickly throughout the world or between the worlds.
I didn't understood how the worlds sometimes are connected but other times the characters cannot use the corridors to travel.
The corridors themselves are quite confusing: the characters have to be careful navigating there or they can be lost, but then again they don't need to know where to go and just think something abstract like "I want to go to someone dying of cancer" and puff, there they are. But they also say that if someone is "swept away" by the corridors then they risk being lost forever.

• Aether, the life force of everything alive. Its manipulation allows them to use it to create shields, create things, manipulate their appearance, travel, etc.

• Beings: mainly demons, angels and humans, but also fairies, satyrs, dragons...

• There is a fight between angels and demons about Aether as their own worlds do not have enough Aether.

• Dimensions:
Earth
(humans)
/ \
Tyrnigg Vasdar
(Fairies) (Dragons & satyrs)
/ \
Angelis Daemin
(angels) (Demons)

🔸Romance

• This is a Reverse Harem romance.

• It is slow going.

• I liked on the FMC questions the idea of being with more than one person.
All the cultural influences, the morality bias, inner doubts, eventual jealousy, not being good enough,... That does bring a bit more credibility to their relationship.

• There is a huge, huge age gap between the FMC and the guys as they are immortal, true immortals aka as those that are unable to die and have been alive since the beginning of time.

• And for me these last two points - relationships & immortals - were not connected in the best way:

- Being alive since the beginning is...wow...it brings a lot of baggage and past relationships, loves, regrets, family...

- I have no problem with the way the demon society evolved: the men were the only beings in an entire world so they grouped together and had relationships with each other.

- But...when explaining to Sienna how normal a relationship with more than one person is accepted and sometimes expected for demons, they always use the legion (small group of demons that are together like family/friend/lovers all at the same time) as their base.
For them, the legion and its members are the most important thing. They are each others' best friend, family and sometimes lovers, they share everything between themselves.
They have no jealousy in the legion.
So when one of them brings someone home, they are happy to share them with their legion mates, no jealousy.
However the guys say that if that person had something with someone outside the legion then they could get jealous.
And until then that was a good enough explanation.
But then it gets inconsistent.
The guys had several relationships outside the legion, wives, lovers, they fell in love with others that are not part of the legion nor did they share their lovers with their legion mates.
It does get confusing and it could have gone with serious angst and inner struggle.

• The guys are quite sweet even if their behaviour sometimes does get incongruent with what was shown during the first book.

The romance was a bit of a let down after the first book.

The plot itself, the adventure is good. Sienna is growing into the special snowflake girl.

I loved it

I can’t wait till the next book in the series is out. I’ve been on a demon kick lately and a lot of books I’ve read have fallen short, this had a different take and I couldn’t get enough. The only touchy part was explaining the religious or lack thereof part of the story to my (non reader) friends, didn’t stop me from talking about It though. 🤷🏻‍♀️
