This book was pure smut.
The author tries to walk the fine line between erotica and actual story, which leads to that (s)he fails misserably at both.
The story is interesting, but poorly executed. The two main characters are somewhat believable up until the ending, where the authors by trying to create an interesting twist manages to kill any empathy you as a reader might have developed for them.
The erotic segments in the book are fairly crude, short and far inbetween.
This is not a book I would recommend.

If you’re looking for a hot hot hot book, this is definitely the one for you. It’s completely filled with sex, betrayal, sex, scandals, sex, backstabbing, and did I mention the sex?

Ariel is a hot shot partner at a law firm who is dating a judge, Preston, who gives her no attention. Ariel tries and tries to convince herself that it’s just Preston putting all his efforts into getting a Supreme Court seat. And eventually uses her best friends mask to get into a high end sex club. There she meets a sexy af guy, who ends up playing a major part in this book, naturally, but spoilers so... One thing leads to another and shit hits the fan.

This book was steamy as hell. And I loved every second! However, I listened to this on audio through Audible’s romance package and the rest of the books aren’t a part of the package. I’ll have to buy all of them. Not doing that. So this is the end of the road for this series for me. No matter the cliffhanger this shit left off on.

Wow! I put off reading this for months because I just wasn't sure I would get into it and I wanted to be in the mood for a series- I wanted to read all four books in a row instead of broken up.
Let's just say I was worried for nothing! I was hooked from page 1 and couldn't wait to see what happened next. I've read very, very few erotica books- it's just not something I ever really got into and when I got this series I, somehow, had no idea that this was, in fact, erotica. When I finally opened my eyes and noticed this little fact I was even more leery.
This is much more than just erotica- it's fantastic fiction also. I did know what was coming before I should have I think which I suppose means it's not the most unpredictable book in the world but I still enjoyed it so much. I started the second book in the Black Door series immediately after finishing this and am sailing through that one now.
I would tell anyone leery of erotica to give this a try- the sexual escapades are just as fun to read as the rest of the book and vice versa- it's a great, great book!

I didn't like. It had no emotional connection at all for me. Not impressed. Didn't turn me on at all. I have read other books that make me want to be the woman in the book but I got nothing from this one

Complete smut. This was just disgusting in my opinion. First mistake was that i thought that I might like it but didn't realise that this was for older readers. And what I mean by that, is horny house wives... It was poorly written, poorly executed. I liked the multiple points of view, but it would change bloody mid-sentence and I would get confused who I was reading from, then it would change back again! The story was just boring and literally gross. Save yourself the pain of having to bleach your brain out, it's less painful, trust me.

The plot of the book was an intriguing one and had much promise. However, the simplicity of the author's writing made the book seem less that what it could have been. The writing style turned me off enough that I was not invested in the characters and couldn't even finish reading the book.

This book was a pretty good read it was just very predictable. I was able to figure out the twist early into the book. It think if it weren't so predictable I may have given it 4 or 5 stars. This was my frist Velvet book, I think I'll read more.

This book catches my attention because of the tag line "black is so much sexier than grey.". A good read yes, but the twist and the events are so predictable. Nothing compared to fifty shades.

Poderoso e Atraente

O suspense estava matando Ariel.

This novel was recommended to me by a friend so I decided to take a crack at it. I have never read a book by the author Velvet and I was thoroughly entertained. I really enjoyed the story and the journey of the characters. I was a little apprehensive because I have read so many books with the same premises; a membership at a sex club that spills into the characters real-life. But, it carried well and I really liked the book. However, without giving away any details I found the ending to be quite convenient and did not care for it too much. I also found out that the book is the first in the series so I am excited to read the next one and see what happens. I read the synopsis of the story and it appears that we are done with Judge Preston Hendricks, Ariel Vaughn, and Trey Curtis and now we are on the journey of The Black Door Too with Mason running the joint. I really hope that we still get updates from the previous characters!

I had to go back and edit this post after reading the comments. So many people did not enjoy this book which is fine, but the comparisons to fifty shades of grey are irritating. This book came out way before fifty shades (2007 to be exact compared to grey's 2011 which is 4 whole years before people) and it seems like everyone is trying to use fifty shades of grey as some kind of grading scale. If your point of reference is fifty shades then I can tell that you have not been reading books for a while because fifty shades is not the standard for erotica and for sure is not even great enough to be used for comparisons. Go read Zane and then compare others to her because hands down she is the QUEEN!!!!!when it comes to erotica!

Delight Debauchery

This book was a page turn the first time I took a gander at it. In fact I began the read at 8 am that morning and ended at 1:30 am the following morning. I couldn’t bring myself to put it down. Then mother of three teens and with a full time job, I needed a release.

Now, I am the mother three adults and well on my way to the next stage of motherhood, becoming a Gigi (Grandmother)! I am going to finally read forward within the series to complete it.

The joys and thrills of a simple and good read can be refreshing at times. The Segway from business to “business” was a delight. Light airy erotica to satiate the soft to medium erotic genre readers. The book is clean cut with a southern drawl to boot. If you want a mind-scape for a while which isn’t too raunchy “The Black Door,” is your saving grace.

I hope you all enjoy it as I did! ☺️

I really liked this book. I removed a star because as much as I enjoyed the steaminess of The Black Door, it would have been better if there would have been more romance.

I was/am torn about Preston. On one hand, he was a great guy and Ariel could have been more supportive and not so bratty when it came to the lack of attention he gave her due to his focus on being a Supreme Court judge. On the other hand, he didn't have to be quite so standoffish towards her. And the was a real manipulative move.

I kind of wanted Ariel and "the masked man" to be together. But one minute he thought he was possibly falling in love with her, and the next, he was basically plotting against her. I understand why, but It was such an about face! That could have been written better.

Overall, the was a good book. I definitely enjoyed it.

Saw the book at the top picks for e-book so I was intrigued and decided to read it. The plot is promising but the story was badly written. No way near FiftyShades. The twist in the end made it worst. I don't think I will read the next book in the series.

To be honest the story is good (One star for that) and cover is good (One start for that) but remaining we have a problem.

So see I am an author myself and would never want to discourage someone as it takes a lot of efforts to write a book and I am saying that this story is perfect. But only the story. Writing style is a bit off. See Prolouge and Epilouge are perfect, slow paced, detailed and you actually feel a part of the story but chapters are like rushed. There is more focus on details of the scene rather than the feelings of the person.

This book would have been a masterpiece if it was from the point of view of Ariel. Because I get it she cheats on the judge her feelings of loneliness when the judge is focused on his nomination, had her feelings expressed properly, it would have been justified, right now it looks like she is just horny and judge didn't have sex with her because he was occupied with something else, she cheated on him. Again I am not saying she is wrong, absolutly not, the judge should have focused on her, but it has been written with so less feelings that it feels she is just horny to cheat on him.

There should also be an arc of Judge's self conflict when he proposed him with something else in mind. Because he never thought what will happen and how much it would hurt her if she knew that marrying her was just one items of his checklist to reach his goal. There should be some hesitation, some self talk some conflict which is missing.

And god the twist. Its good very good but again less feelings are written to make you feel something, last few chapters judge failed in his career and personal life, then also feelings is not detailed properly...

Writing from 3rd person point of view has an advantage that you can write everyone's feelings, but that is missing here making it earn only two stars from me...

And velvet... Please come back and write more books... Your stories are good just consider feelings as well to be jotted down

The Black Door by Velvet was a good read/listen. I can bet there are many women who once entered the Black Door rather it is at a sophisticated hideout like the one depicted in this book or one of those private house parties that are held in one of the unsuspected homes in the suburbs.

I didn't read the description of the book before I got the audiobook. I just saw that it was narrated by Honey Jones who narrated the book I was reading before.

In this book you learn that sometimes things are not what you expect them to be and people are not who you expect them to be. You will be wildly surprised on how a wonderful relationship can be ruined by your work or your play. Preston worked hard to become who he wanted to be and it left Ariel lonely. Ariel feeling that she was not the most important thing to Preston lead her straight to the black door which to her on the high ride of her life. She found what she felt she wanted at the black door but was it what she needed.

Looking forward to reading The Black Door #2. Will Preston and Ariel live their happily ever after or Knawl?

Oh...my gosh. So, this book is not at all my usual fare, but I was bonding over books with a coworker, she offered to lend me the first 3 in the series and who am I to say no to free books?
Now, I've read my fair share of smut over the years, but not often am I actually pulled into the plot the way I was with the Black Door. It dragged me in like a good soap opera that was filmed on Starz just so they could add the naked bits! And of course, by good I mean too good to be true (or bad if you don't like soap-level drama). I laughed at the men not knowing what women really want, but thinking they do. I shook my head at the women judging men while pulling nonsense that men usually do. And through it all, I was applauding Ariel for doing her damn thing. There were some parts that had me sighing too much, or rolling my eyes at the ridiculousness, but all in all this was a fun read. Definitely not safe for work though!

1.25 Stars. (BW/BM). An audible escape audiobook with narration by Honey Jones. Sexually frustrated heroine. Politically ambitious hero. Deception. The heroine, Ariel Vaughn is a young attorney and partner in a prestigious New York law firm and is dating an older man, a judge who aspires to become a Justice on the Supreme Court. Although Ariel claims to love him, his waning interest in their sexual life leads Ariel to the Black Door. The story is long and wearisome, bottom line, Ariel enters into a sexual liaison with the owner of the Black Door who turns out to be the son of her beau, the judge. Nasty and creepy. Any who, she and the judge marry and she and the son and the son’s “girlfriend” enter into a secret triad to keep the judge in the dark. And the lust and deception continues; but without my interest in reading any further.

I am partial to erotica written for and by black people, and I think this is a good example of that. I enjoyed the pace (though the audiobook's presenter did have a few wobbly moments) and overall it was a smart story.

I was disappointed in the drama of the plot twist that came right at the end. As someone who has watched their fair share of soapies, I have little patience for memory loss as a plot device.

That aside, I liked how the characters were developed and I thought Velvet was masterful in her illustration of sex scenes. The suspense, mystery, and lust were as entertaining and exciting.

I appreciated this as an effort to balance the smutty elements of a story with the more substantive, character-driven elements.
This is a series I might return to in the future.

I enjoyed this book. It had both a mysteriously gripping plot and very sexy stimulating spicy scenes. Ariel Vaughn is an interesting character. I feel like her struggles with her sex life with career orientated partner Preston can really resonate with women in the same situation as her. I had an inkling throughout that Preston III was Trey. What I didn't expect though was for him and Ariel to be having an affair. That's the ultimate betrayal I think - sleeping with your father's fiancee while also dating his personal assistant. I definitely enjoyed this book and will absolutely be reading the sequels.
