I have been searching for a protagonist similar to Elizabeth/ Abigail in Nora Roberts’ The Witness for five years. I think I found her in The Missing Piece. Whereas I love standalone stories, I am very happy to see that this book belongs to a series.

Charlie Dodge was a former Army Ranger-turned-private investigator. He was married to his beloved wife, Annie, for over 20 years. Unfortunately, she had early-stage dementia. Ms. Sala kept her character true to this incurable mental disease. It was heart wrenching.

Wyrick was a fraction over six feet tall, bald and without breasts. Before Charlie knew her, she had survived stage-four breast cancer. Because he was ex-military, very little shocked him. She was brilliant with IT, had a pilot’s license and was better at defending herself than he was. No surprises here, all of this is found in the first chapter.

Charlie and Wyrick had a very unusual relationship and their dialogue won me over. Well, that, and the suspense.

”Damn it, Wyrick, did you hear me? Who’s the boss in this office?”, Charlie snapped.

Now she did look up, pinning him in place with that black, bottomless stare she perfected, and said nothing.

He stared back at her, willing himself not to be the first to look away, and focused instead on the tic beside her left eye.

“Fine,” he muttered, and started to walk off.

There is so much more to their association but you will have to read The Missing Piece to discover it.

In addition, there was the dark and dubious company, Universal Theorem, trying to force its hand with Wyrick. The mystery itself had plenty of chicanery for Charlie and Wyrick to pursue. And the last chapter only enforced my need for Second Sight. There was no cliffhanger, just my wish to read more of this uncommon couple. Now.

Aug 31st Update After reading the first two chapters of Second Sight, I returned the book to our library. As much as I like Charlie and Wyrick, I am not comfortable with the subject of trafficking with children. I then read Blind Faith and had no problem picking right up with the PIs. Just be prepared to ‘suspend your disbelief’ with Wyrick’s super woman-like abilities.

I have been reading Ms. Sala's books for a long time and she never disappoints. This book is certainly in that category. The Missing Piece is a mystery with a little bit of chemistry thrown in. The characters are what make this a great read. I believe she has outdone herself with Wyrick. She is one unforgettable woman! And her boss Charlie Dodge will break your heart. Charlie is a PI and Wyrick is his superwoman assistant. Highly recommended for mystery fans as well as fans of Sharon Sala. There is another book coming in this series. I hope we don't have to wait too long!

I have a certain expectation of a Sharon Sala book but I wasn't sure what to expect with this one. In the end it was different from her other stuff but in a good and interesting way.

This one features a private investigator, Charlie Dodge. Charlie has a great repuation as a PI and charges for it accordingly. A lot of that has to do with his assistant Jade Wyrick referred to only by her last name throughout.

Jade is a bit of a wish-fulfillment character that would not be out of place in a James Bond/Mission Impossible movie. She is 6 foot tall, bald (because of cancer that she beat but her hair never came back) and wears her bald head proudly, chose not to have breast reconstruction so she is very flat. She sports an aggressively androgynous look and at the same time she wears outrageously bright leather clothing, flamboyant make up and has a magnificent dragon tattoo that spans her torso and back. She is also super rich, owns several companies, patents, her own chopper (that she also pilots), she is a super hacker, cool as ice and is the product of gene manipulation by a very scary shady corporation that wants her back. Outside of all that she is a kick-ass assistant to Charlies. she uses her mad skillz helping him on his cases while simulataneously being the most efficient, mind-reading assistant any boss could have. Normally, I would roll my eyes with all this, but I liked Wyrick. She is such a big writ-large character that you just want to see what she does next. Also all of that is a lot of window dressing. Wyrick has a surprisingly vulnerable interior. She is self conscious about her looks even as she flaunts it. She also has a crush on Charlie, her boss which she hides through sarcasm and brusqueness.

Which brings me to Charlie. He is a cool customer, smart and supremely competent. There is a reason he rates such high marks as a PI and people are clamoring to hire him. He also has a fairly sad side story in that his wife whom he profoundly loves is suffering from early onset Alzheimer's that is so advance that she is in a care facility that Charlie visits religiously hoping she'll recognize him just once. This is a tragedy because they are only in their forties.

This book centers on what is apparently a kidnapping of the head of a very rich family and CEO of the family's company. Charlie is called in by the man's frantic family to see if he can find him. I liked the way the story unfolded. There were some nice twists and turns and didn't fall into too many suspense cliche's. Charlies does PI work and his approach is methodical and we see how he connects dots. We also get a fair amount of different POVs, lots of family secrets with the family before all the i's are dotted and T's are crossed.

Normally this author writes romance or romantic suspense. I also see this book being shelved as romance, but there isn't any romance in this outside of Charlie's devotion to his wife. We do know that Wyrick has a thing for Charlie but it is only alluded to once or twice. Charlie gets a moment where he really looks at Wyrick and for the first time actually sees her as a beautiful woman. But he shies away from that thought and to the author's credit, this is not belabored. There is no underlying pining or anything. Throughout the book, Charlie and Wyrick remain boss/assistant and and really professional. But yet... there is a little hint that possibly some point in the future they may notice it. But given how the author has created the relationship between Charlies and his wife, any sort of future romance would not be quick or thoughtless.

I listened on audio and the male narrator was very good. I enjoyed this and have the next one in the series queued up.

I have read and enjoyed a lot of Sharon Sala's books but I never expected anything like this. The two lead characters are so different and beautifully written. Charlie, our war veteran turned P.I., whose love of his life wife is in a nursing home with early onset Alzheimer's and doesn't recognize him anymore. Wyrick, his bad ass assistant, who zealously guards her background, is so brilliant it borders on scary. Even though it appears Charlie and Wyrick are constantly at loggerheads, they each harbor deep respect and are constantly fighting the feelings for each other that are slowly emerging. All this, coupled with their individual unique skills, loyalty and dogged determination to find the pieces to each puzzle of the mystery, make this an outstanding book. It is not a romance. It truly is character driven and a page turner.

Charlie is a private investigator and his wife is suffering from early Alzheimer‘s Disease. It is really sad when she can’t remember him and he’s doing his best to take care of her and the medical fees. Wyrick seems to be part of an experiment and this adds to the mystery of her being on constant surveillance. She is different in many ways and acceptance not based on physical appearance is one of the key mentions.

The mystery is fast paced and exciting. I kind of suspected who was the mastermind behind the abduction/ attempted murder but I was still pleasantly surprised when it was revealed. “The missing piece” is the first of a four part series and I am intrigued to continue on the remaining three. It was a good read.

4.0 - 4.5 ***

The story is about PI Charlie Dodge and his assistant Jade Wyrick. Charlie is an excellent PI with a great reputation. Hi wife Annie has early onset Alzheimer's and is in a care facility. Annie's going downhill quickly in the book. Charlie loves his wife and misses what they had so much. Wyrick has her own past and tragedies. She's a breast cancer survivor and a genius, she's also hiding secrets about her past. Wyrick is attracted to Charlie but knows his heart is with Annie. Charlie is beginning to notice an attraction to Wyrick but refuses to go there. Charlie and Wyrick make a phenomenal investigative team. Neither one internalizes or allows their feelings to control their decisions. I wouldn't say the investigation of a missing man is anything new but there were a few twists and turns I liked. It was hard to walk away from the book and I stayed up way too late reading.

I liked the writing style very much.

Private investigator Charlie Dodge is hired to find a missing executive in Colorado. As the evidence unfolds, Charlie becomes convinced it's not a kidnapping. The wealthy family lives together in a huge castle and someone living or working in the household may be responsible. Charlie is very methodical in his search efforts, finding things even the police overlooked and his backbone is his trusted assistant Wyrick.

I read books by Sharon Sala 25 years ago when I was reading romances. Don't read those anymore. Looking at the blurb on this book, it seemed to be a mystery, not a romance and I'm happy to report that's what it turned out to be.

The best parts of the book are the main characters. Charlie Dodge is a former Army Ranger and decorated hero. He charges heavily for his services but he is worth every penny. But the truly impressive character is Charlie's assistant Wyrick. She stands over 6 feet tall and is an expert in karate. Due to breast cancer, she is bald and chose not to have reconstructive surgery. She sports a huge dragon tattoo on her body. Needless to say, people sit up and notice whenever she enters a room. She is a pilot and a tech genius.

I see so many areas to to take this series into the future. Several background items are alluded to in Wyrick's life that left me very interested. Then there's the chemistry between Charlie and Wyrick.
I'm ready to read more!

good book

A pretty good mystery without the sappy romance. This is the first in the series. Jade is a great MFC and her edge disguises her vulnerability but she’s also intelligent. Her banter with Charlie is great. The pace of the book was pretty steady which is a good thing. Overall, 👍🏽👍🏽

This is the kind of story that a reader can't put down; at least, I couldn't. When Carter Dunleavy's disappearance is presented to PI Charlie Dodge, it looks like one of those run-of-the-mill millionnaires gone missing. It isn't. And this case at first appears not to be complicated at all, mostly because of the incredible skills of his assistant. She's bald and without breasts, but those are just the most obvious elements of her beauty. Charlie's wife, Annie, has Alzheimer's and he is deeply affected by his inability to find her. After all, that's his job: he finds people, bodies, solutions to problems. And discovering that Carter is hiding from his own family is just the beginning of the unraveling of his fleeing.

The deeper Charlie becomes in the case, the more he is drawn to his assistant, although she refuses to let him know how she feels about him. Then there is the mystery of who is following her and why--and what she is going to do about it.

If you're seeking a book which details both create and resolve numerous complications of both the characters and the plot itself, this is the book for you.

PI Charlie Dodge's wife, Annie, suffers from early-onset Alzheimer’s, so he keeps busy with his business with his able assistant, Wyrick. This story is supposed to be about Carter Dunleavy who has gone missing. He is in hiding because of the attempts on his life. The mystery is lack luster; the most interesting part of the story is Wyrick.

This suspense had lots of fast paced exciting action but little if any romance. However, it was an absorbing story and had my attention throughout. I found the 'heroine' so fascinating and she makes me look forward to the next book in the series. After some pleading, PI Charlie and his genius assistant Wyrick take a case to find a missing millionaire.

What an absolutely amazing read and fantastic characters.

I love strong female leads and Jade Wyrick is that in spades, not to mention being brilliant.

I also love Charlie for his strength as well as his compassion.

The mystery is awesome, but I'm so glad the book solved the mystery, but I can't wait to read more about Hodges and Wyrick and her backstory.

Picked this up on a whim and was more than pleasantly surprised. Very taut in style and characterization. At times was left wondering why characters were introduced but Sala pulled this all together.

Now will have to continue. As good as the story is there is a need to continue. Gladly.

Wow - probably my favorite book of the year so far. This one took off at the speed of sound and never really let up.

Charlie Dodge is a P.I. in Dallas, who is dealing with his wife's illness (early-onset Alzheimers), and the need for her to be in a care center. He is assisted in his business by Wyrick (her last name - she won't let Charlie use her first name) who is a 6 foot, bald, tech genius. They get a call from a wealthy businessman in Denver who needs their help finding a family member who has gone missing.

Things happen at a very quick pace and I was never just reading to get to the next action section. The characters were great - interesting, and multi-faceted. There were several choices the author made that I appreciated. The police officers that Dodge interacted with were generally intelligent and willing to work with him, even though he was reaching conclusions they had missed. So often police characters who interact with P.I.s are portrayed as dumb, or resentful, and these were just portrayed as professional, solid officers. I also appreciated that Dodge was so committed to his wife, even though she no longer really knew who he was. Wyrick was a great character - right now she seems a bit broadly drawn but with only small glimpses of her backstory, I think we will understand more in future books. She is written as being comfortable with herself and someone who has (mostly) chosen to be distinctively different, but sometimes the world she interacts with is not comfortable with her. She was a very interesting and appealing character.

I have already pre-ordered Book 2 in the series as I can't wait to find out what happens next with Dodge and Wyrick.

There are enough overviews on The Missing Piece that I really don't need to go over it. Just want to say I enjoyed the mystery. I like Charlie Dodge and Jade Wyrick's characters. Jade is a kick ass women who doesn't take crap from anyone. I like that Charlie still loves his wife even though she's quickly fading away from early onset Alzheimer's. I look forward to reading other stories in this series.

Right now, this is the best book I have read so far this year. It was talked about a lot on one of the book groups I am a part of. I will defintely read the other books in this series.

For my blind/visually impaired followers in the US, none of the books in this series are available from BARD/NLS at this time. There are other books by this author that you can get from this source. I read this one in commercial audio.

4.0 stars. My 2nd series by this author. This first book in the Jigsaw Files series was interesting and different. Private detective, Charlie Dodge, and his assistant, Wyrick (Wyrick is the "different" part of this story). Look forward to the author uncovering the mystery of Wyrick's background as the series continues. Great hook at the end, has me queuing up book 2 to read soon

I'm still trying g to absorb it all. It's certainly the best of Sharon Sala! I'm anxiously awaiting the next book. Charlie is a private detective who is totally in love with the wife who has early onset Alzheimer's. His assistant, whom he knows is brilliant and who won't let him call her by her first name. Otherwise, he knows nothing. They're hired by the nephew of man who has barely escaped death several times. The family is beyond wealthy. Their home is actually the replica of an Irish castle. The intricacies of the story lead one down multiple paths. There are unacknowledged and unwanted sparks between Charlie and Jade. There are twists and turns that kept me up until one in the morning. I want number two NOW!ss

Great book, it was one I hated to have to put down, every chance I got to sit down to read I took it. I really liked Charlie and his assistant Wyrick. She raised many eyebrows just by the way she looked and her choice of clothing. I highly recommend reading this book. I'm now going to move on to the next book in this series.

Entertaining. I needed to read about some heroes. The news these days displays some very ugly people in this country.

I did get weary of the details of Wyrick’s (miss Wonder Woman), clothing choices and make up. That part didn’t hold my interest.

There was an element of wholesomeness in the story as Charlie Dodge and assistant Jade Wyrick hunker down and solve a crime.

What was left in the air was why—in the beginning—the office building and block they worked in blew up. Was it people after Wyrick?

I’m guessing the tension between the two won’t change much given Wyrick’s back story. Too bad.

Jade Wyrick, one of the main characters, is a breast cancer survivor who opted not to have reconstruction done. Sala keeps unnecessarily commenting on her breasts/how they're missing/how people judge her appearance (Wyrick is also bald). She is attacked while buying a sandwich for "being queer."
You don't have to have breasts to be a woman, for goodness' sakes. Women with cancer deserve better than this claptrap being repeated.

Loved this book by master romantic suspense author, Sharon Sala. I listened to it on Audible and I swear I have no idea what was going on in my own life for the last three days. Sala only gets better with each book, and with 120 plus under her belt, that's saying a lot.

The star of this Sala show, is Wyrick. O.M.G. What an amazing character with a back story that doesn't quit. The Jigsaw Files series promises to be amazing.

Sharon Sala is at the top of her game...

Charlie Dodge is a private detective from Dallas,Texas. A veteran who served and was wounded in Afghanistan, he came home to spend the rest of his life, Annie, who was his first and only love. But fate had other plans,as Annie was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease and resides in a memory care center for her safety, steadily losing touch with reality. How agonizing it must be when the person one loves most in the world has no memory of a a life shared together.

Jade Wyrick is Charlie Dodge's assistant, the one who manages the details of his business. She is more aware of his private life and anguish than he realizes and sometimes needles him, thereby allowing his aggravation an occasional outlet. Jade has not only survived breast cancer, she has unapologetically created a no nonsense persona, and she has technological skills that make today's software gurus look like rank amateurs.

Charlie is hired by a man named Jason Dunleavy in Denver to find his uncle, the head of Dunleavy Enterprises. Carter Dunleavy has been missing for weeks, and while Denver PD has been investigating, leads have dried up, andnd they are no closer to answers than when Carter first went missing. As Charlie and Wyrick pull the threads in the Dunleavy case, loyalties are tested and truths come to light that no one could have expected.

As always, Sharon Sala's dedication alone is worth the price of admission. The story that follows is merely icing on the cake. Highly recommended.
