Taking a job in Scotland shouldn't be any different than Zoey's other jobs. Three months to dive into the intricacies of a university, find its shiny component, flaunt it to the world, and move onto another university. Her niche occupation has served her roving lifestyle well. Just because this job is in another country shouldn't affect her in any way. She doesn't count on liking it so much, on reconnecting with a friend from grad school, or on meeting someone like Celia, who puts up with all her quirks. Celia is sensible about love and knows that taking a risk on someone unaccustomed to permanence is probably a bad bet. Will the cynical wanderer and the reluctant romantic set aside their ingrained hesitancy to take a chance on love?

Being that this is a sequel to a book written, or at least, released in 2015, I should make mention of that, eh? At least in terms of: 1) need to read prior book; 2) connections between the books.

In theory, you probably do not need to read the prior book to understand and enjoy this book here. I'm saying that after having done a reread of the prior book, so everything from that is still clear, was still clear in my mind when I read this book here. Skye and Ainsley, the two mains in the prior book (though it was only from Skye's point of view, unlike this book here which follows two point of views), continue interacting and enjoying life roughly 1 year after their story was told in 'One-Off' (even though it's been 3 years since that book was published; I know because Poppy was 4 in the prior book, and is 5 in this book (or 3 and 4 or whatever, shesh, it's my basis for remembering how long apart the story lines are and now I can't recall Poppy's age, heh)). In practice: if you every planned to read and/or enjoy 'One-Off', you probably need to read that one first, since the story-line involving Skye and Ainsley (however her name is spelled) is massively advanced just by the beginning of this book here (and throughout and in the end).

Despite what I said in the previous paragraph, one of the reasons why you can get away with reading this book without reading the prior one is because it follows Zoey and Celia - and, as indicated, shows both of their point of views. And, while the reader learns more about Skye and Ainsley, the reader learns that in passing, not from their point of view.

The book opens with Zoey taking pictures at a wedding in Scotland. She's not Scottish, and she's not a wedding photographer, but does have a dad with Scottish blood, and that one is in the photograph/video/film world professionally and provided his daughter with some knowledge - enough to get away with taking 'neat' and 'great' photographs at a wedding. The wedding is the first time Zoey happens to meet the other main character in the book - Celia. Celia is a happy type of women, with a smile on her face. And Zoey has caught sight of her while taking pictures - smiling and stuff. Then catches that smile collapse, and overhears why that smile collapses. A drunk wedding crasher makes that smile go away - Celia, in her bubbly way, had asked the guy if he'd like to dance - he took one look at her and made some cow comment, about how there's no way he'd dance with someone as fat as her.

Whereupon Zoey wanders up and asks to dance - the drunk smiles and thinks she's talking to him, but she's not. Zoey and Celia have a lovely dance together.

A short time later Zoey's real profession turns up in the story-line - when she turns up at a university to help with branding. And runs into Celia again - as Celia is a professor there.

One thing leads to another and Zoey and Celia become friends. Celia talks somewhat non-stop, while Zoey . . . doesn't talk much. Though Zoey does get bold on occasion - like when she keeps asking Celia out on dates (the romantic kind not the friend kind) and keeps getting shot down.

I mention the 'doesn't talk much', though, so I can anchor the next bit on that. Whereupon I lose how to attack this aspect. hmms. Zoey is the kind who has a certain trouble talking, not because she is necessarily shy, but I won't reveal the exact reason, though it's revealed in the book. She talks but doesn't like being in situations wherein she might have to talk, social situations and the like. I mention this because it is both a personality trait, and therefore something to mention, and because it is one of those few hooks that occur occasionally in books to hook me and pull me in (I suppose the first book being set in Washington DC, in and of itself, could be seen as a hook in that book). Since, at times, too often really, it becomes physically painful for me to communicate (more literal than figurative, like the times I attempt to talk only to spend a good bit of time having my words become unclear due to coughing and like actions). So I have that common characteristic. My issue isn't the same as Zoey's though. And this review isn't about me, so...

So - Zoey's short, has talking issues, has eating issues, and 'horrors' (the number of times 'American!' gets mentioned in this book . . . hehe) she's an obnoxious American (or assumed to be . . because she's from the USA). Celia, who I haven't mentioned much, is larger than her ideal medical weight, though not necessarily fat; has horrible relatives who literally will come up and berate her in public; and, when not being berated by family, tends to have a happy talkative personality. Oh, and is native Scottish.

Forgot to mention that - while the action does not take place entirely inside Scotland, the only action revealed in the book takes place in Scotland (there's at least on group vacation to Greece that is mentioned but not shown).

Enjoyable book.

5 Stars for this sequel to One-Off which was written in 2015 (I first read it in 2016). Before starting this book I re-read One-Off since my memory is awful but it makes re-reading enjoyable, especially good books. I don't know if it is essential to read One-Off, but it will help.

The book opens at the wedding of Skye and Ainsley's wedding in Scotland. The first book was about this pair who through circumstances end up planning and arranging the wedding of their best friends. Zoey Thais, a friend and ex-college roommate of Skye, where they had both met Ainsley. The photographer backed out of doing Skye and Ainsley's wedding so they asked Zoey to step in at the last moment. Luckily, she was going to the UK for a couple of job requests, otherwise she may have not even attended the wedding. At the wedding she notices one of Skye's work colleagues, Celia who as Zoey describes her - had a lush figure with curves in all the right places and had a genuine smile "like she could find joy in the simplest things". She asked Celia to dance after hearing Ansley's drunk cousin insult Celia. And so begins their close friendship. Zoey does attempt to move their friendship to more romantic, asking Celia out on a date numerous times only to have Celia turn her down and insist they remain just friends.

Zoey and Celia are opposites, while Celia is a non-stop talker, social and full figured, Zoey is quiet and not a talker (unless she is giving a presentation or doing her job) and is small and very thin. Zoey is very comfortable letting Celia carry their conversations.

Zoey is spending a few months working at Edinburgh University where Celia is a Professor and head of the television department. Zoey has an unusual profession. She is a "Brander" specifically for educational institutions. She finds a department to concentrate as a "brand" for the university. She explains it "Marketing is essential, it lets people know what you do, Branding is your identity."

This book is written unusually. I've read books where every other chapter switches POV. I wasn't paying attention to table of contents, so it surprised me at about midpoint the POV changes from Zoey to Celia then switches back to Zoey for the last 25%. It was really good choice to hear Celia's voice and POV to get a better understanding of her and their relationship.

This was a very good read, especially if you like slow burn romances and well developed characters. I'm a huge Lynn Galli fan. This maybe one of my favorites, but its been a while since I read her older books. I may just have re-read a few so I can accurately compare and decide where this one stands. ;-)

A solid 4 stars!

It has been awhile since the first book in this now series came out, One Off. I vaguely remember everything about that first one but its not so imperative that you do. The two main characters from the first book are in this one but are secondart characters to the two MCs in this book. It was a really good read and both characters were flawed and perfect for each other. If you are a fan of Lynn Galli you will enjoy this read. There is little angst and just the right amount of drama for a sweet read with a nice HEA to end it but enough left a bit open for the next book to continue with any of these characters.

One-Off by Lynn Galli entered my most favorite shelf and the leads, Ainsley and Skye became one of my top favorite enemies - lovers couple. When I heard about Speak Low, the second book in the Scottish Charm series, instead of immediately clicking purchase, I was conflicted. I was afraid that I might not give the leads in the 2nd book a chance and searched only for Ainsley and Skye's scenes since this story took place in Scotland and the leads were friends of Ainsley and Skye. Thankfully, I had nothing to be worried about.

Zoey and Celia captured my attention first when they danced at one of the most anticipated book wedding of the year and eventually my heart as they spent quality times as strangers first then friends and so much more, later in the story. The build-up of their relationship from friends to more was exceptionally done as it was filled with more shows than tells.

For someone who had a thing with talking, I love how Zoey wooed Celia with her words, a piece of my organ melted every time she did it. Celia, I love how comfortable she was with her body, for accepting Zoey the way she was / never pushing Zoey to be like everybody else and for not pretending to be someone else in front of Zoey. Despite their differences, they were always comfortable being in each other's company. Zoey and Celia's relationship was very much a gradual build, going from barely acquaintances to tentative friends to an explosive couple.

It was an easy book to read and even easier to love, I appreciate the positive messages the author conveyed through her characters as they were good reminders to all of us to take the life we have - seize and cherish it. The conflict in this story was handled well, very thought-out and dare I say, reminded me of the Jerry Maguire - You Had Me At Hello Scene... Without the nosy ladies but Ms.Galli's version was way better.

One-Off, Speak Low and I am on my legs, hoping for a third book even if Ms.Galli sets it in Washington, D.C. A florist by the name of Morgan earns a happily ever after and the capital needs more love, now than ever.

Swoony lines -

Zoey to Celia
- "I like the way you look, half a stone less or not"
- "I like listening to you."

Celia to Zoey
- "You've become so important to me. From that very first moment when you asked me to dance. Your smile, your kindness, your smarts, every bit of you."

Ainsley to Skye
- "Darling, if you're helping Zoey make a break for it, I'll break something of yours."

I struggled with the first 70% of this one, mostly because I just couldn't connect with either MC. Their attraction was slow and not super believable at first, mostly because I could not get a handle on Zoey. I also wasn't really drawn to the content, Zoey's job in the UK wasn't that interesting for me, and the secondary characters didn't hold any zest. However, something I enjoy about Ms. Galli's writing is that she is good at creating different personality traits in her characters, moreso than other authors, which challenges my own perceptions/judgments/preconceived notions. No exception in this book.

However I'm glad I kept at it, because with a quarter left, Zoey's silence and eating issues are revealed in a surprising manner. When her and Celia are finally intimate, it doesn't exactly go as planned and this is when my own emotions kicked in. Ms. Galli did an very good job of showing vulnerabilities in Zoey, when the reader may think/assume all insecurities would probably come from Celia, who struggles with her body image throughout the book. Interesting. I actually had a hard time imagining what either character looked like, I kept re-reading the descriptions, which weren't very forthcoming anyway, but nothing popped out at me, which is unusual.

So in the last quarter of the book I enjoyed the story more, but it wasn't as gripping as other books by this author. Again I would have liked more magic of Edinburgh revealed to add more depth to the narrative.

I’m quite enjoyed this than I expected. Normally, for me, i tend to like the second book less that the first one for some unknown reason. I would say I enjoyed this as much as I like the first book.

I really like Zoey and Celia. I like how Zoey stand up for her friends and has no hasitate to protect them. Celia is the same. Though she tend to stay quiet when her family berated her about her figure and her sexuality. I still couldnt imagine how Celia’s full-figured really look like though.

And i’m glad Ainsley and Skye appeared alot in this book as well. I really enjoyed those two :)

Lynn Galli writes atypical characters perfectly. I enjoyed this book a great deal more than the first, this time around. I may be in the minority here, but I think Zoey and Celia were ideal for one another. I like when characters are not perfect, and internal conflict plays a role in making the two characters click. I enjoyed catching up with characters from book one and would enjoy reading more within the Skye/Ainsley world.

This is technically the second in a series but you can easily read it without losing anything in the story. It's a typical Lynn Galli romance. The plot is interesting and the characters likable. Zoey is one of the main characters and I found myself drawn into her character pretty quickly. I should also admit that I will read anything Lynn Galli puts out because her writing has been consistent and I like her style.
This was a good plane ride read.

This was a solid book. Both MC were enjoyable. I liked the first in the series a little better, though. It was nice to Skye and Ainsley.

Speak low

I will openly admit that I love this author, her writing style makes reading her novels so easy and engaging, and this one is no exception. There are themes that run through her MC's and anyone familiar with her work will be able to pick these out easily. A lovely story, for which you don't need to have read the previous novel to enjoy, but it helps.

I liked the first half better than the second. Even though the characters were interesting, it ended up being sort of bland and I don’t know why.

If you love one-off, you definitely are going to love this one! (And this one can read as standalone) but in the first it will give you all the basic, get to know Zoey’s best friend and her best friend’s partner (Skye and Ainsley ) and lots of fun in that one, it’s been a while since the first book came out and I need to reread.

This gives me why-did-I-not-notice-it-before!
I love every thing about this book

Please read! Give it a try.

The love story of the book is actually sweet and well written, I guess I think the only problem I really have is with how horribly some of the Scottish people are portrayed. I’ve never heard anyone have such strong anti-American rhetoric here. We have no problem working in a professional setting with Americans or Europeans.
Furthermore, we don’t make digs at people’s weight, especially not overtly like it’s discussed in this book.
Finally, the homophobic portrayal of the photographer isn’t all that accurate (this kind of discrimination is entirely illegal and would genuinely cause public outrage). I’m not saying that the homophobic abuse Ceilia received from her religious family wouldn’t happen, it’s the only likely source of discrimination that’s fathomable from a Scottish point of view. Your family can still say whatever they want to you, but strangers just wouldn’t get away with it, and us Scots just don’t care enough about these things*

*All that is said with a caveat that I am a west coaster. Sometimes tolerance of tourists can be low in and around Edinburgh but not really Glasgow.

I don’t usually comment on books I read, but I wanted to note that the portrayal of Scottish people is not accurate at all. As a Scot, I found it a massive detractor from the story - but I did read the book and enjoyed the story.

I buy Lynn Gallis books without knowing anything else about them. I expect to love them and devour them quickly. One of my favourites was the first in this series. Everything would suggest I would love this book. I didn’t. I finished it and suddenly all my dissatisfaction fell away. I was emotionally moved by the ending and lots fell in to place. So much so I immediately reread it. My dissatisfactions/ complaints had disappeared and I was left full of admiration at the subtle hints Galli had peppered the book with. I don’t know how to recommend this book except to say I got twice the value as reading it twice in succession was like two different books. Once when I was an outsider and the second time when I got it!

Nice follow-up to One-Off, introducing new characters while simultaneously continuing Skye and Ainsley's story. Having a key character with a carefully hidden speech impediment is an unusual twist that adds an interesting element to their Zoey and Celia's relationship.
