The Australian Army has won its first victory, but the gore-spattered streets of Melbourne await. Buried under a mega-swarm, Lysan Plague has transformed the state capital into a slaughter house of epic proportions.
Meanwhile, famine threatens, and more troops are needed before the final assault. When Mark’s platoon is sent to a rural town to re-establish food production and conscript soldiers, they face violent opposition from an outlaw motorcycle club, ‘The Spartans’.
Across the water, Tasmania is in the grip of a terror campaign led by the Patriot’s Party who aim to sever ties with the mainland.
With supply lines and troop numbers secured, the Army prepares to attack the Melbourne swarm. But with a traitor in their midst, will this epic battle see the armed forces obliterated in an orgy of violence?
The series really hit it’s stride here. Such excitement, suspense, emotional depth and breadth, and just plain fun to read! Of course, our beloved characters being front and center as well.
One thing I will say about the author. He does not shy away from making the difficult emotional choices. He dares, more than any other author I’ve come across in years, to make the hard storyline determinations. And in turn, the three books in the “Plague War” series thus far, have been crafted into a world with a rich emotional atmosphere. Leading the reader through many authentic, and often arduous to feel, emotions. (As I might hear a character phrase it, “At times I’ve felt absolutely gutted.”) As well as surprise, guilt, grief, joy, abject misery, laughter, fear, confusion, peacefulness, egotism, overberance, camaraderie, hubris, suspicion, terror, courage, narcissism, selflessness, faith, hope, love, plus more; the whole gamut. Brava!
Beyond all the “touchy-feely” emotional stuff lol. There is PLENTY of action. Battles. Infected interaction. Tough situations to be squeezed out of - or “out of the box thinking” escapes.
Much movement and advancement on the scientific front. Doc Harry is featured in quite a bit of the story. Extremely enjoyable.
The General has a new plan in the works to hopefully rid a huge city of the Carriers. This part puts young Erin in a unique role. I love it!! Extremely creative. I truly hope she “gets back on the horse” in book 4.
MANY shake-ups and changes with our primary and secondary characters happen herein. Some for the positive, some not so much. I’m still reeling from a few incidences.......
Lots more in this thrilling book 3! I cannot wait to continue the ride! A series that honestly improves with each subsequent installment.
It’s taken me awhile to write this review as I’ve simply been lost for words. I’ve been left with these feelings of loss and devastation and pure awe at the talent of this writer. The propensity for detail and his descriptive use of words slams the reader right next to the characters riding shotgun in this war not only against the carriers but those dregs of society who step up and think that this new world is theirs for the taking. The depth and intricacies woven into the storyline simply astounds ensuring that your attention doesn’t waver as each page is turned. The emotional pull of the characters only builds and strengthens as the story unfolds but, unfortunately in war there are casualties and these cut to the bone ensuring that any loss is your loss.
I've just read all 3 books in 2 days and I can't believe how amazing this author is. He doesn't waste your time with long drawn out descriptions but he does describe in a way that you can actually SEE what he's trying to tell you. So much action I'm glad I take blood pressure meds or I'd have had a heart attack from the constant rush whenever he'd build suspense. He wasn't afraid to make us love the characters and then rip one or two away. Then repeat the process again. I'm in complete awe....
Excellent trilogy to read. Full of tense scenes. I was lucky all 3 of the books were finished, as I read them back to back. I am sure I'm going to be reading more of this author's work.
