The crews of the USS Carl Vinson, a nuclear aircraft carrier, and her battle group, struggle with the loss of their families and the lives they knew. Coming back to 1942 from 1990 throws them into a war their parents fought and died for. Now, they must face a new future of challenge and danger after fighting the Japanese only days after their arrival in 1942. After reporting to Admiral Nimitz, they are ordered, with the help of the Enterprise battle group, and under the command of Admiral 'Bull' Halsey, to attack Tokyo. Their success gives the Japanese a black eye and changes the course of Word War II. They sail into Sydney Harbor in Australia for repairs and find they are in a world they only know through books and films. For some, that world is another shock they must face, especially LCDR Samantha 'Spike' Hunt and the women of 1990. Then, they are ordered to the Atlantic and the next phase of their war, to face Hitler and Goering's new jets. Are the Black Knights up to the task? Can Spike prove her mettle as a leader?
There are several glaring errors in both this as the first book in the series. How is it the Japanese and Germans can teach their 1930/40's pilots to fly modern high workload jets after only a few weeks, yet the Americans and British have to go through a 2 year programme? The emergency services in Britain didn't fit their vehicles with blue lights until the 1960's so the line a Police car arrived with blue flashing light is totally inaccurate. At the end Sam is said to eat a sandwich lunch with an apple and Orange. My Mother never saw an Orange from 1939 until 1946, such was the unavailability of such delicacies due to rationing in th UK....
Fighter command did not issue air raid warnings or 'scrambles' by radio. They used 'hard' telephone lines. And Gloria force landing about F14 on a road near Brockenhurst in the New Forest....dream on! Having worked that in that area for many years, she would have tried to get down on the old Mosquito and Secret Service airfield at Holmsley as no suitable roads were or even still are available. As a work of science fiction it does well, but when you include real characters from history, don't skimp on researching the supporting historical detail too.
In the South, if something is pretty good, but not great, it's often called, "fair to middlin'". As an alternate history, I think the story is a five. As for the technical rating (spelling, punctuation, use of homophones, etc.), the max I can give it is a three. I recommend a friend who is a picky reader be asked to proof the story (someone with an interest in sf,preferably). The authors have done a good job alluding to the difficulties faced by women and persons of color from the 1990's that are displaced back to 1941. As an early Boomer with family in the south, and as an Army officer serving during the Vietnam era, the idea of women serving, especially in a combat role, was mind-boggling. As an officer whose "additional duties as assigned" included being the Equal Opportunities Officer for a Battalion that had not seen combat, my experience with the relations between whites and other races often left for a lot to be desired. In combat, many of those conflicts simply disappeared. As a military history buff - I recommend this series.
I missed giving 5 stars to 1st book. But what a breath of fresh air. Writers that know Carriers. ALMOST NO slow spots in these books, they read like a runaway train. I'll read whole series then start on their Next one. The ground crews must have loved them, wink wink. Or like I heard a lot of times. Only in your dreams. Nothing like serving a hot pilot, nothing worse the having to deal with not only a poor pilot but a jerk. Funny how jerks aircraft always was a piece of junk. Good pilots smooth as silk.
2.5 stars. Short and somewhat interesting for perhaps a read on a plane trip. However, while I thought book #1 was a bit derivative, combined with this book, the series is so derivative it approaches outright plagiarism. I doubt that I will read any further sequel, unless perhaps I have a plane trip with nothing else to read and I want to refresh my memory of Birmingham's Axis of Time Trilogy.

A Great Sequel to a Very Innovative story of WWII as affectived by Traverlers from 1990 to 1941
The future technology is delivered to each side in the combat, but it is the skills & character of the 1990 warriors that traveled back in time that makes the difference & how they integrate with the 1941 leadership & forces. I have found the series & characters addictive & keep turning pages & adding sequels.
This episode demonstrates clearly the excitement and attraction of this series.
Sam’s skill set keeps expanding even while working for Halsey and his ego. Off to Britain to fight for Churchill and his super ego. The Germans have jets but not the experience and training of the Black Knights. Women pilots are putting males under great stress by their abilities and success.
Catches the nuances of serving women well. Accurate and suspense filled. Technical accuracy. The kind of crazy story that really adds color to an otherwise ordinary military yarn.
The best naval fiction ever. Better than Clancy's first!!
While clearly a proofreader would be useful, this and the first novel stand head and shoulders above any naval aviation fiction I have ever read, save perhaps Counts. Please, please write more!
I usually like time travel stories, especially if I don't get confused. This series is pretty clear, so far. The desire not to use the atomic bomb is a good one,but we are using 20-20 hindsight. At the time, it was a good idea.
A fantastic follow up of the first book. Can't wait until those WW2 Leather necks get their grubby paws on the M16A3 battle rifle, the 49SAW ,and the M60G machine gun.
Great Story! The story picks up well with the first book. Again excellent detail from flyers etc. THERE IS A PROBLEM!! the book is too short! Please fwd book 3!
