This book is just incredible. It made me laugh, it broke my heart, it made me cry. It’s a brilliant exploration of grief and all of the emotions that come with it. I absolutely adored Pog. He’s just lush.

For the 3rd prompt in The Adventures Through Wonderland readathon to make a cozy reading snack, I made brownies lol & then this book completed the 4th prompt to pick a book for a cozy night in. I read this at night in bed, & I loved it so much! I think when I picked it up last night I was on page 100, or something like that. I couldn’t put it down, & read the rest in 1 sitting. So much was going on, & I just had to finish it lol Pog has my whole heart & soul. I love imaginative worlds, but it is always the characters that steal my heart in books-when done right. I learned in Tin that this author is great w/accomplishing that. Pog was such a unique, creative character..& the author made me love him so much! He was so loyal, determined, brave, smart, caring, & intuitive. I also loved Mouse! Ughhh all the feels! We have a sibling story-Penny & David. David is a thunderstorm of emotions he doesn’t know to handle. Penny also had my heart. I felt so much for her. She was such a great character. Grief, & the pain associated w/it are a main point of this book, & it is so well handled & depicted so honestly. Even down to the dad & how he was written, it was such an honest reality of dealing w/the loss of a spouse for him, & of a mom for them. This family is targeted by the villains of this story b/c of that grief & pain-they feed off of it, & b/c this family’s is so raw & strong-the villains are very drawn to them. Pog is the protector 😍 He is tiny, but mighty! This is perfect for any time of year really, but especially perfect for fall time, & it had all the creepy spooky vibes-while at the same time being a cozy read! Don’t know how the author does it! Talent! Of course another beautiful cover, that gives me all the fall vibes!😍😍 I highly recommend this book & this author. Great writer, & such a nice person. I cannot wait for my preorder of his newest book The Monsters of Rookhaven to get here! So excited to read more from him.💜💜

Loved this book, it would make the perfect read aloud, deals with grief (death of a mother) so it would be good to know your audience’s backgrounds!

This is the story of siblings Penny and David, who are grieving the loss of their mother, as they move to a new house and must team up with Pog- one of the “First Folk” who lives in the attic of the new house-to defend themselves from the far more nefarious creatures. Pog is utterly endearing and I could not have loved him more due to his caring, compassionate nature and the beautiful bond he forms with Penny and David. I also became very fond of Penny and David, who are interesting and so wonderful , and I found the antagonist very sinister indeed. I also loved the way this was paced- it unfolds very slowly but it suited the story perfectly for it to be that way and it allowed me to fully get to know the characters. The ending was so moving, and I thoroughly enjoyed this. I`m very much looking forward to going back and reading the author`s debut, hopefully soonish. 4.5/5

Pog reminded me a lot of the movies I loved as a kid - underdogs fighting a seemingly unbeatable enemy, squabbling family members whose love for one another ends up saving the day, portals to other dimensions concealed under the stairs - and I was charmed by Pog Lumpkin himself, who faces every threat with a stout heart and a sense of duty. This book, in fact, has as much heart as its eponymous hero; a story of grief and love and loss, it has some profoundly moving moments amid the action scenes.

What a wonderful and strange little book. I loved both the setting and the writing, but what stood out the most were definitely the characters and their emotional journey. Especially Pog claimed a place in my heart and I will keep thinking about the First Folk and their tales now.
The story has the imagination of a Studio Ghibli film and the slightly dark strangeness of a Tim Burton film and I can imagine that I would make a wonderful animated movie.

Pog is an incredibly poignant, yet ultimately up-lifting story, tackling the difficult subject of family grief in a skilful and sensitive manner. I became absolutely absorbed in the lives of Penny and David Cresswell as they struggle to come to terms with the death of their mother.
The family move to a rather dilapidated house in the forest, with past family history. Eleven-year old David, who is angry and hurting, soon wanders into the forest where he has a strange encounter, the consequences of which haunt him for much of the story.
The family’s move into their new home draws unwelcome guests, from the weakening Necessary boundary, who are drawn to the heart-wrenching grief of the family’s memories of loss.
Fortunately, Pog, one of the First Folk, who has been charged with protecting our world from the perils that lurk beyond the Necessary, is living in their attic and knows how to handle a staff and sword. And what a hero he is! A two-foot-tall warrior, just as adept with words as with actions. Compassionate, clever, courageous: I adored him!
Although their first encounter with Pog doesn’t happen in the most fortuitous of circumstances, a heart-warming relationship soon develops between Pog and the children as they join forces against the invasion of some rather grisly creatures such as the greebeldies and bloodworms. What follows is perfectly-paced action with elements of danger, deception and betrayal balanced with cathartic moments, humour and bravery.

I found Pog an enjoyable story, with a deftness and lightness of touch that made it a fun adventure.
But this lightness also has its drawbacks. At the heart of the novel is a story of grief. The family moving into the home where Pog lives are suffering from a recent bereavement, and this shapes both the characters and the story. The author all too lightly brushes over this, and at worst, what should be something important merely becomes trappings on the fantasy story. I felt this was a real shame, as it was a missed opportunity to talk about something important and give the story some real depth. For example, it is revealed that David suffers the worst from the grief, but it is never explained why he feels this way, nor does it go any deeper into the strain on the family other than a few awkward moments. So the sadness overwhelms the story in some ways, with very little understanding of why, or the relationships between any of the characters.
The fantasy story too suffers from vagueness. I finished it with more questions than had been answered.The novels hints at an interesting fantasy world, but never goes beyond the immediate experiences of what happens inside the house. The Necessary is merely a plot device, rather than something that makes any sort of sense.
But there are some things the book does extremely well. Pog is a lovable character, and I would have liked to have known more about him. His relationship with Mouse was rather cute too. Taken for what it is, the story was very entertaining, and I’m sure younger readers would get a real kick out of it. I feel it would make an excellent family film.

I absolutely loved "Tin", Kenny's first novel for children, the characters, the storyline, the action scenes, so I was looking forward to this one. I'm afraid I was a bit disappointed. Following the death of their mother, Penny and David move with their father to an old house in the forest which belonged to their mother's grandparents and where she had spent much of her childhood. Soon after their arrival, the children discover they are living with a small furry creature called Pog, who seems to have been in residence forever and holds some sort of duty to protect the family (and the world) from malign supernatural forces. Pog has inherited this responsibility from his late 'Grandfa'. Some of the themes in the book are quite mature, as is some of the language, and yet the idea of talking fluffy creatures in the attic seems more suited to a much younger readership, so I'm not sure that this book would quite hit the right note for either 8-10 year olds or 11-12. The moment of peril, the action scenes at the end, are quite intense and reminded me of "Tin", but I think they are less well done here. I found them much more difficult to picture. And 'The Necessary', which seems to be some sort of door between the real world and the supernatural world, was very difficult to visualise - I could only think of it as a toilet! So, rather disappointing for me. I think the book would be suitable for 10-11 year olds who like action, but a more discerning or mature reader might find the plot a little less engaging. I remain a fan of Padraig Kenny's writing and look forward to the next one.

This is such a delightful beautifully written book that deals very sensitively with the loss of a parent and grief. There are parallels to The Spiderwick Chronicles with a family moving to a large run-down home in the country where it is clear (to the children) that there are creatures from other worlds inhabiting the nearby woods. It is the duty of Pog Lumpkin, a two foot tall hairy warrior who lives in the attic, to protect the family and he is a gorgeous loveable courageous being. At its heart though it is a tale of two children and their father who are desperately grieving the loss of their mother but who are also hurting each other as each navigates their own feelings of loss. It is a story of good versus evil and trust and love as the children and Pog help each other. There are some lovely light moments of humour but also moments of danger and bravery.

I feel torn about Pog.
On one hand, it was enchanting with a wonderful setting and sweet characters. On another, it just felt... thin. I picked up Pog because the premise reminded me of Spiderwick, and I've been chasing that high since I was 13. But this story wasn't what I was looking for.
Kenny's writing is tight and clear and nice to read. The settings—the old house and the older forest—were really interesting. And Pog himself was the star of the show. His voice and characterization were nearly perfect, I think. I loved Pog, and I would have read a whole series featuring him.
But this book isn't part of a series. And I think it suffers for that. The main characters (excepting Pog) felt thin and flat, somehow. And so did the settings, upon closer inspection. There was SO MUCH potential in the forest, old home, and hidden portal to a dark wasteland realm. But Kenny didn't give them the time or space to feel like they developed.
So ultimately, Pog felt like a gorgeous, atmospheric sketch you see in someone's sketchbook, the kind of sketch that makes your imagination latch onto a thousand possible stories to explain it. But when you look closer, you see it isn't what you thought... your imagination had produced more interesting and gripping stories than the one actually there.

I can't help but think of the Spiderwick Chronicles while reading this. It is SOOOO similar, it's crazy.
The little creature POG, is just like Thimbletack of Spiderwick fame. And the house is surrounded by little creatures just like in the spiderwick chronicles.
The only difference, really, is that the creatures feed on memories - particularly sad ones. That was an interesting idea.
But then the antagonist is just like Mulgarath from the Spiderwick Chronicles. He is even made of tree and there is a certain description of him in the book that it literally seems to have been plucked from the Spiderwick Chronicles. I just rolled my eyes. I read Watch Hollow before reading this and that book has a tree monster in it too. So overdone.

Such an original and heart-felt book!
The story follows Penny, David and their father as they move to their mother's childhood home after her death. The house is old and surrounded by woods, full of strange noises and things that scuttle in the night. Penny, David and their father are all dealing with the death of a loved one, but as each struggles with their own grief they inadvertently hurt each other.
I felt so much sympathy for the characters and felt that the aftermath of a bereavement was expertly portrayed.
Pog was an absolute treasure. I loved how he spoke, his bond with his Grandfa, and his loving personality. The bond he forms with the children is really lovely. This story read like a classic with a mixture of menace, adventure, family and fantasy. Highly recommended!

Penny, David and Dad move into a house that once belonged to other “tall people”. What they don’t know is that Pog, one of the first folk, also lives there, protecting its surroundings from dangerous creatures that are coming through the necessary. These shadow lurking things feed on grief and pain and this is exactly what these tall folk are going through…
A lovely story about loss, grief and friendship filled with adventure and unexpected turns. We had a wonderful time listening into the audio book (from our library) which was an incredible experience as its descriptions brought us right into the story (and we highly recommend it)!
A wonderful middle grade for children who love The Spiderwick Chronicles. Recommended ages 8-12.

I really, really, REALLY wanted to like this book. I wanted to witness the family come to terms with their grief. I wanted to know about Pog. I wanted to learn about the first ones.
But the story was...plodding. It was slow and mostly uneventful. The story is weighted in grief, but there is no touching or uplifting conclusion.
The story is great in theory, the idea of painful memories having power. But the entire book could have been condensed into a short story a quarter the size of the original text.
Maybe my own history with grief and loss has coloured my views on the story. Perhaps others will find more meaning to it.

I picked this up because of the cute cover, the sweet blurb and the high goodreads rating. I was thoroughly disappointed.
The defining redemption would have been the siblings grieving the death of their mother, but even that was handled without a huge amount of tact or expression.
Pog's plot felt like something I'd read before, bland and uninteresting. I felt it tried to recreate the Spiderwick Chronicles to an affect and failed.
I wanted to enjoy this but it took far too much effort to read and wasn't worth it at all.

Something that will stay with you forever. Unbelievably well crafted.
As soon as I opened the first page of this book, I knew it was going to stay with me for a long time. The writing style is incredible, Padraig Kenny creates magic with words to bring them alive. This is the perfect children’s book, for all ages in fact. It’s a beautifully crafted story that secretly helps people deal with grief. I managed to keep my tears in till the last page. Every page was perfect from beginning till end. I devoured this in three hours, I physically couldn’t stop myself from reading.

I thought it was an okay story which attempted to address grief through the lens of young teens/older kids. I have a slight niggle however; I know their father was also grieving, but he came across as really selfish and irresponsible. He never apologised when he snapped at them... denying them enrollment at school? This is safeguarding stuff and I think it was a bit too much to unpack for a kids book. Overall though, the message was nice and I think would be quite palatable for kids.

I love Pog (and I love Mouse). The Pog parts of the story were my favourite parts. He is such a wonderful character and I cared about him (and Mouse). I sometimes found David and Penny annoying, I understand they are grieving and everyone grieves differently. I don't mind Kipwik either! Overall, I like the story, it is heartfelt but I preferred the critters and the creepier side of the story rather than the humans but I know for this story you couldn't have one without the other. The 3 stars don't really reflect my feelings about Pog.

I highly recommend this middle grade book of adventure, family, loss, grieving that is told from the prospective of two siblings in an unique accessible way.
If you liked the writing style of his first book TIN then you’ll absolutely love the prose, metaphors and storyline of his second novel.

This book is beautifully written, full of rich vocabulary that draws the reader in. I instantly fell in love with Pog and his friend, Mouse and the enchanted world where they live. I loved how this book dealt with the sensitive topic of grief and how everyone deals with it in their own way. This will certainly be a book I will recommend to my students and one that I will read again and again.

I loved Pog, I loved Mouse, I loved Penny and David. I loved the crazy house and magical wood. I loved the ‘what to do now Pog?’ Way Pog talked. I loved how the past and present fitted together. I loved the mix of magical realism and contemporary world. It was very special and left me feeling cosy.

I have a weakness for books about little people roaming around large houses. And if these books are also set in a fantastical world this makes me extremely happy. Please pick up this book if you share my love for small fantastical creatures that have lovely personalities.
