Death of Darkness

Rate this book
Seth has led the Immortal Guardians for thousands of years. With them fighting by his side, he has protected humans from psychotic vampires, defeated corrupt mercenary armies, defended military bases under attack, and more. But the latest enemy to rise against the Immortal Guardians has proven to be a formidable one, wielding almost as much power as Seth. His goal is simple. He wants to watch the world burn. And he will use every means at his disposal to accomplish it. Seth and his Immortal Guardians have succeeded thus far in staving off Armageddon despite heartbreaking losses. But they have never before faced such danger. Seth has only one wish: to protect his Immortal Guardians family and ensure the continuation of humanity by defeating his foe. But then Leah walks into his life and sparks a new desire.

Leah Somerson has suffered losses of her own. It has taken her a long time to rebuild her life and find some semblance of peace. Then one night a tall, dark, powerful immortal with what appears to be the weight of the world on his shoulders stumbles into her shop, and everything changes. Peace and contentment are no longer enough. Now she wants more. She wants to find happiness. She wants to erase the darkness in Seth’s eyes and replace it with love and laughter. She knows he’s different in ways that make most fear him. Even some of his immortal brethren keep a careful distance. But Leah will not. Nor will she shy away when danger strikes.

Huge 5 Stars!

I loved everything about this book! It was perfection. I’ve been anxiously awaiting Seth’s story with a lot of excitement and a bit of trepidation. Seth is...well...Seth. His story would be tricky to write but Dianne Duvall did an amazing job navigating land minds and giving him the love story he deserved. Well done Ms. Duvall. I’ve had a great time reading (listening) to your Immortal Guardians series.

Ok so I’m apparently in the minority, but I was very underwhelmed. Leah was...ok. She seemed nice enough. But all she did was act weird and say dumb stuff. The love story made no sense because why did it happen? They met and then they were in love. Then they had sex. And that’s basically all they did. Also, who watches Stranger Things on DVD???? Most of the time Leah spoke I just wanted to be like “please stop talking.” She rarely added anything to the conversation and honestly she didn’t DO anything! For a 600+ page book, that was really really frustrating. Also, we get it, Adira is adorable and wonderful and all things great.

This book could def use another edit or two as well, the names were so consistently wrong that it was frustrating and really broke from the story, trying to figure out who was who. Leah was misnamed Ami, Lisette, and Susan multiple times.

I will prob read the next book and I did like the previous but I’m really disappointed in this one.

5 stars - Paranormal Romance

I've binge-listened to this series on audiobook for the past three weeks, and I've loved every minute of it! Kirsten Potter's fabulous narration gives unique voices and accents to all the characters that adds a depth to the stories that I'm not sure I would've felt as much had I just read them.

I've been looking forward to Seth's book from the beginning. The immensely powerful and deeply beloved leader of the Immortal Guardians is such a formidable figure and a major part of every book in the series. I knew his story, if done right, would be epic. At first, I wasn't crazy about Leah and was disappointed in the romance. But as the story progressed, I ended up believing in them together.

Zach and Lisette are my favorite couple of the series and their book, Night Unbound, still holds a top spot for me because I love them so much. But Seth's book is definitely a close second favorite. Big 5 satisfied stars!

I'm going to be in serious withdrawal now that I've finished. I just hope Dianne Duvall continues with this series because there are several characters I'd love to read about and some questions that still need answering!

Well then, this book almost answer all the questions I have about this series!

And sorry Zach, I like Seth’s story slightly more than yours! 😘
If you read PNR romance, you really have to read this series, and start from book #1, because the overall story is connecting and jumps in the middle of the series will ruin your enjoyable.

So, what are you waiting for?
Read this series!

This is kind of SPOILERS:
I want to add something, I know is important for some of my friends here.
The hero was celibates for thousands years, since his wife and children died. Not even attracted to any woman before he met our heroine. He said, he kind of sleepwalking until she wake him from his very long sleep. The same with our heroine, she was still grieving and sad for loosing her husband and baby too for the last twelve years, until she met Seth.

The story we’ve all be waiting for is finally here. I was utterly enthralled with what Duvall’s imaginings penned vividly and beautifully bringing Seth's story to life. It wasn’t quite what I expected, but it provided so much more…

Through out the Immortal Guardian series I’ve guessed and have gotten hints from Dianne Duvall about Seth and his origins. She’s kept us always pondering the mysteries of Seth while keeping us hanging on to every word that we could gather from snippets leading to deeper insight. Well, Duvall masterfully reveals everything you’ve ever wanted to know and more… But, somehow left us the perfect amount of new mysteries to leave us still begging for more.

Leah Somerson was a complete surprise. I don’t think you could have found a more supportive partner to equal Seth’s awesomeness.

I loved how every single person had Seth’s back in wanting him to find happiness.

I honestly could go on and on. The fear that I might give something away leaves me to stop here and say that you truly MUST experience it for yourself.

If you haven’t guessed, I loved Death of Darkness. It was a story of hope, love, friendship and family. A story that will stick with you, keeping you pondering the what will come next scenarios. I know I won’t even come close to what it will be, but the one thing is for sure, if Duvall writes it, it is going to be something AMAZING!

I received this ARC copy of Death of Darkness from Author's Taproom. This is my honest and voluntary review. Death of Darkness is set for publication August 20, 2019.

Honestly, this book made me question why i stuck with the series as long as i did. I know that no one is going to read this review to try to decide whether or not to read this book because if you have gotten as far along in the series as this book you will probably, just like me, continue. But the holier than thou soapbox tone, "kick-ass" women who don't actually do anything, and deus ex machina ending just kinda exhausted me. I think Dianne Duvall really succeeds as an author when there is a very limited cast. My favorites of hers are the first two immortal guardians books, awaken the darkness and a sorceress of his own. The thing these four have in common is the mostly small contained number of characters. As the series has progressed there has just been too many people added that aren't necessary to plot and gum up the rest of the books with scenes showing the reader that the couples are still in love. I don't need to see old couples kiss and give relationship advice to the new ones. If the old couples don't serve plot relevance, i don't want to see them. Overall, the plots have been getting weaker and weaker. Awaken the darkness convinced me to continue the series and even though i enjoyed it i'm kinda mad i read it because it convinced me to read this trainwreck.

The story we have all been looking forward to... and surprisingly, it was every bit as much fun as I hoped it would be!
I just ate it up with a spoon!

Who will the oldest immortal guardian, who is a father figure to all (more on that later), fall in love with. Well surprisingly it wasn't another immortal who has all kinds of powers. Leah is just a beautiful 46 year old work-a-holic human.
But she is kind, sexy and has a quirky sense of humour and loves to dance.

It was fun watching them fall in love and the inevitable reactions from all the other immortal guardians.

Then there's Gershom still lurking somewhere with the immortal guardians that he kidnapped.

So plenty of action and intrigue to balance the sweetness of the romance.

There's also a HUGE reveal towards the end about Seth and his dedication to the 'gifted ones'. We also learn more about what happened to his first wife and children.

Towards the end there's a couple deus ex machina moments that had me rolling my eyes, but i didn't fault their addition. Without them the ending would have been a little (or a lot) bitter sweet.

And then, if that isn't enough for you, there's a fantastic epilogue that segues into the next book. I can hardly wait!!!

I tried. I really did! I’ve been trying to finish this book for 4 days. And that’s a lot of days for me because i usually finish a book within the day. You know when you highly anticipate a book about a hero after reading and reading how bad ass he is throughout the whole 8 books in the series and then when you finally get his book and you feel it was a let down? That it’s just meh?
This could be totally be just me that I’m finding it so boring. I liked the heroines in the previous books they were badasses but this one felt forced. She was like I know how to take opponents downs and I can shoot to kill but it felt fake. I just couldn’t connect with him or her.

I couldn’t ignore the inconsistencies either. Like how tall Seth really was. And one minute they were in David’s house and the next in her apartment did they teleport there? But I don’t think so since she didn’t know he was a “vampire” god only knows how many inconsistencies are there because I decided to call it quits after 30%.
This book is way too long too. Like 300 pages extra of nothing.

Maybe I’ll finish it one day but for now I’ll put it on hold.

Safety: Hero has been celibate for thousands of years after the death of his wife and kids. Heroine has been celibate for 10 years also after the death of her husband and kid. I doubt there’s OW drama since in this series hasn’t been any OW drama.

I have longed for Seth’s story, but also feared his story would signal the end of the series. Once Duvall assured readers it was not, I dove in. Seth is the parental figure of the Immortals, the worrier, the one who wants everyone happy and who puts their needs first. To see him finally open up, share and bring the rain was delightful.

Like life, love often finds you at the most inopportune times. Gershom has captured immortals, vampire attacks are on the rise and Seth is working round the clock to aid them. But he has also been dreaming about a woman. That woman turns out to be Leah Somerson. The woman who owns the clothing & toy store that his granddaughter loves.

His immortal and human teams sense something and plan for the two to spend time together. It begins as friendship even though the chemistry is present. Honestly, this slow moving romance was so sexy and sweet moments took my breath away. It was tender and filled with laughter, shared secrets, confessions, pain and more. Simply beautiful. 😍

The suspense thread was off the charts. Danger, brutality, and unexpected aid had me bouncing back and forth between holding my breath, bawling like a baby and dancing with glee. So many questions answered. Thank goodness Duvall stated there would be more books upfront because I would have surely thought this was the end. I am delighted, but also curious as to what changes if any these developments will bring to the mix. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

I was so disappointed in this coupling. I've been in love with Seth since book one and I hated Leah. It drives me crazy with the low self esteem the female characters always have. This insta love made no sense. For the age of the characters? The immaturity was a let down. Leah wasn't worthy of Seth. The writing was so cliche. This isn't Dianne Duvall's best work. I was really let down.

This audiobook was everything. Dianne Duvall wrote an ah-mazing story and Kirsten Potter delivered an ah-mazing narration. Now it should be said that this one lasted 17 hours and 16 minutes, so it was much longer than the other book, but everything was necessary.

This book had action, suspense, mystery, romance, family, humor and most of all, a happy ending for our heroes. Seth's story was so intense. It is one of those books you can't put down. If you have been following the story, then you know the showdown with Gershom would be epic. I loved the battle, I loved the loyalty and camaraderie between the Immortal Guardians, and the word play was so clever.

I don't know the kind of woman I wanted for Seth, but Leah Somerson was just right. For such a powerful being, a simple yet strong woman who was comfortable with all of Seth's quirks and responsibilities was the only way to go. It was fun seeing such a seriously stoic guardian let his hair down and let love in. It was brilliant because the romance didn't overshadow the plot which the author has been building for the past several books. It worked in concert with saving humanity, and it was an angst-filled journey. A lot of questions were answered in this installment and it wrapped up certain storylines, but there is more mysteries to uncover in this series, and I can't wait.

If I could give this book 10 Stars I would. It is full of surprises and jaw dropping moments. It moves fast. I never thought I would like a middle age women for Seth's love interest and wife. Don't let Leah Somerson 46 years of age trip you up. There was a method to the madness. What you think is going to happen doesn't happen.

There is one shock after another, David, Cliff, Baby Adira and Michael, The Watchers, and the Others who they really are. Best of all Grishom finally gets his due. But boy does he wreck havoc on Seth and his Immortal Guardians first.

I refuse to give anything away but this might be the best written story I have read in years. I could not put it down. Its far more then a romance love story!!

BRAVO!! Dianne Duvall. I am on pins and needles waiting for the next book.

Dianne Duvall never disappoints. We wanted an earth-shaking novel for our most beloved character and she has certainly delivered on all the action, suspense and romance we have come to expect.

Check out our Character Interview with Seth.

Spoiler warning, if you are not up to date with the series. This review also will be referring to happenings in this book.

Seth has been the leader of the Immortal Guardians for centuries. He lost his human wife and children a millennia ago and has since made a new family with his beloved Immortals. And like any father-figure, Seth takes on all the responsibility for their safety and happiness onto himself.

As we have seen since Night Unbound, the danger to Seth’s family grows with each new attack, each having been orchestrated by Gershom, who a being as powerful as Seth and one with a unknown vendetta against Seth. A vendetta he is willing to throw the world into an apocalypse for if it will bring pain to Seth. Gershom is determined to destroy Seth and is willing to destroy his Immortal family to do it. Each time Seth fails to capture Gershom, the pressure is weighing heavy and heavier on Seth’s shoulders. We have seen that lack of sleep is affecting his judgment, his performance, and his overall happiness. Anytime we see Seth in recent books, he is somber and almost bleak from his own self-flagellation, and with only the rare smile and those are mostly for his adopted daughter and granddaughter, Ami and Adira.

When Seth meets Leah, we see for the first time a real spark of joy in Seth and it is amazing. The joy he feels when he is around her is like a drug to him. It’s like throwing a light switch the way she lights him up. As soon as he sees her, you can feel all his self-torture drain away and for those precious moments when he is focused only on her, Seth finally knows happiness. Seth, and the audience, are so swept away by the happiness she brings out in him, that we all suffer this oppressive dread and anger when his phone rings bringing him crashing back to reality.

Of course, the workaholic in Seth tries to deny himself the pleasure of time with Leah. I thought at first that it was simply that Seth doesn’t know how to relax after centuries of jumping to protect the Immortals in need but the more you read you see that Seth doesn’t believe he deserves to step away from his duty and he feels guilty for taking even a moment of quiet pleasure for himself.

I loved that once his people started to realize Seth’s growing feelings for Leah and how he was denying himself the time to be with her, David, Aiden, Zach and even former-other Jared are all stepping in to take care of Seth’s growing Immortal family and field the phone calls and emergencies that drain so much of his time and energy so that Seth would have no excuse to spend time with her. Even Chris Reardon and the network are doing what they can to protect Leah and keep her safe so Seth can be happy. They are all forcing Seth to have a life outside of just being their leader. Even little Adira kept taking Seth and Leah’s hands and joining them, making them hold hands whenever she was around. They believe Adira has precog abilities so it may simply be that she knew they would fall in love but it was adorable nonetheless.

I have to admit that when I first read the description of Seth’s book, I feared that the story plot would fall into my most hated paranormal story plot where the deceased spouse is reincarnated and our hero doesn’t understand why he is so drawn to this new woman until he realizes that she’s his dead wife and then they must be together. I. HATE. THAT. STORY LINE! But if it turned out that way, I had been determined to try to enjoy Seth’s story regardless. But of course, I should have known that Dianne would not disappoint me and drag us down that rabbit hole.

I was soooo happy when it turns out that even someone as old as Seth, who has been mourning and celibate for a millennia, can meet someone new and learn to love again.

I loved that Dianne didn’t make Leah immune to telepathy, like Ethan. Seth simply didn’t read her thoughts. It was a matter of respect. He didn’t want to do that to her and he refused to invade her privacy. He even warned off all of the telepaths that if they read her mind, they would face his wrath. David does read her mind at the beginning but only to make sure she is not mind-controlled by Gershom since Ami and Adira frequent her store.

Another amazing thing is that Dianne chose Leah to be human. Yes, I said human. Leah isn’t a gifted-one. There are many reasons for that, especially since we will finally get some of the answers about who Seth, Zach and the others are and about where gifted-ones come from. All those things that she found a logical reason not to divulge in Night Unbound. While everyone is shocked that Leah is human, Seth does not shake his fist at fate and lament that Leah would grow old and die. Remember his first wife was human as well. He still falls in love with Leah knowing that their time together would be limited and he even brought her to meet a human/immortal couple so she would understand what the future held for them. While Seth can extend her life with his healing, she would not be immortal. But since neither Leah nor Seth is infected with the virus, I am wondering if there might be more babies to join Adira and little Michael in future novels.

I also loved that Leah is not a girl. She is a mature 46 year-old-woman. She has a confidence that we wouldn’t find in a 25 year old heroine. And her age is one of the reasons it takes so long for them to get beyond friendship. Leah doesn’t want to be Seth’s cougar girlfriend, since she believed him to be in his late twenties or thirties, at best. Seth doesn’t object since he fears an attack by Gershom if he knew how much Leah mattered to Seth. She understands his grief because she lost her husband and child and she understands why he feels he has to shoulder the whole burden on himself but she also stands up to him and doesn’t allow him to do it. Seth loved that she never felt intimidated by his size or the power that radiates from him.

This book is soooo good, I had to immediately read it again.

Thankfully, I had read several notes from Dianne that Seth’s book is not the end of the Immortal Guardian series as the ending has a let’s everyone get together and celebrate vibe like you might get at the end of a trilogy. Dianne, and we as a fandom, are having too much fun with these characters to walk away from them so soon.

This is still my favorite series and I can’t gush enough about it. Seth and Leah’s story is another triumphant addition. Everyone who likes Urban Fantasy and paranormal romance should be loving Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians.

Received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

It seems I am in the minority with my review. I was eager to read Seth's story, but it was rather meh. Leah just came off as weird for the purpose of being weird. She felt like a character created just to shock. There wasn't much else to her. Her and Seth's relationship was flat and lacked a reason for existing. They meet and suddenly after all the thousands of women Seth has met and thousands and thousands of years mourning his wife, this is the woman he instantly connects to? Really? Because she's tall? I lost count of the times her being 5'10" was a big deal.

Then the story itself felt unfinished and lacking. Gershom is causing problems by increasing the number of vampires. So, we read about many close-call vampire battles and Seth transporting all over the world 24/7 helping his Immortal Guardians. Well, we've read about a lot of close-call vampire battles in 8 other books. Gershom is supposed to be all-powerful and diabolical and cruel and he was going to defeat Seth by... keeping him really busy? Then the end fight was a little confusing. It seemed like a big deal was made about the building everyone ended up at, and what its purpose was....and nothing came of it. It was just a place the final battle happened. It could have been a Target for all its importance. Unless it's importance is revealed in a later book, but for this novel, it was like why are they here vs a warehouse or pretty much anywhere else?

Plus, I was really annoyed with the wedding gift to Leah at the end of the book. It felt like a cop out. I felt her being human vs what Seth is actually made them a more interesting couple. Plus her being human had to be when you find out the true nature of the gifted ones to Seth. I think a better outcome would have been the eventual solution to stopping the madness from the vampire virus. The infected still get the added bonuses of life, strength, and speed, but no longer go mad. Instead it came across as "You get cosmic powers. And you get cosmic powers. And you get cosmic powers." And her reaction to the gift again was just...immature. It was a pretty humbling and awe-inducing gift and again her reaction is weirdness.

I think the Epilogue was actually my favorite part of the book. That was interesting and created some good suspense and mystery.

I was disappointed in this book and ended up skimming most of it. After just finishing a re-read of the Mercy Thompson series I have a fresh idea of how much plot and character development a strong writer can squeeze into 200-250 pages. This author used about 450 pages for a story that could easily have been told in half that and bored me to tears in the process. Another thing that put me off in this book was the repeated use of a completely improbable character, out of the blue, to fix an unfixable problem.

Good story. When’s the next one due?

I didn’t get the love between Seth and Leah. Couldn’t understand watching STRANGER THINGS on DVD. The best parts of the story had nothing to do with the romance between Seth and Leah. I am glad we found out about Seth’s real history. Will say no more.

"It storms when you make love?"
His eyes still held a golden glow as he sent her a sheepish smile. "Apparently. I think because it's been so long."
Turning back to the warriors in the hallway, Leah flashed them all a grin. "Well then, boys, you'd better put on your rain boots on. Because monsoon season is coming."

~ Chapter 16 ~

****
For the romance: 2 stars
For the rest of the plot: 4 stars

As every other fan of the Immortal Guardians series I highly antecipated Seth's book. Unfortunately it didn't reach my expectations, not even close.

First, too long a book for what it delivered, lots of pages spent with the romantic aspect unnecessarily;

Second, Leah was adorable but nowhere near what I expected from, or wanted for, Seth's romantic partner;

The plot around looking for the kidnapped immortals and everything related to Gershom was good and big reveals were made about Seth. Better yet:

Oh and that ending: OMG, I need to know more.

3 It was an okay read

Death of Darkness was an okay read. I think I would have enjoyed it more had I follow the series and read the books in order. I did feel like I was jumping into the middle of a plot and the last few books have been intense.

What can I say, It was free from the library and it passed the time.

This one is Seth’s story and I didn’t care too much for the romance between him and Leah. I didn’t see it and I didn’t get the chemistry. She’s a cool chick and he’s a cool dude, but two great characters doesn’t make a great couple.

Kirsten Potter is an awesome narrator and 100% made the book. This could have been a BORING book, but her tone and character transitions were excellent.

I wouldn’t rule the series out entirely, but just focus on the first book and then move in order from there.

Wow, this book. What a disappointment! I really loved the first few books in the series, the action, the twists, and the warriors, but this one just didn't live up to the hype. It felt completely different from the spirit of the rest of the series, and Seth was unrecognisable from the other books. Gone was his warrior spirit, his absolute commitment to the guardians, and unbelievable power. His whole relationship with Leah felt forced, and there were aspects that never got resolved. The statement that he recognised Leah from somewhere but couldn't place her was never clarified. Apart from the mind-numbing length, the first 50% was incredibly slow, with no plot line or relation to any of the build up of the previous books. It was overall such a dull, disconnected book where before there was open potential. Wish I could get my $11 and mighty warrior Seth back.

I wish I could give this book a 10 star. For me this was one of the most amazing romances in a long time. Seth was cute, funny and sexy wrapped all in one package and the heroine couldn't have been more perfect for him. I read this book with a smile on my face throughout the read. The heroine had that power on everyone around her. She was simply awesome and could make anyone laugh with some outrageous words.

And that end? Wow, just wow.
I would say this series was worth reading just to get to this book hehehe

First half 3 stars second half 5 stars. The first half or so was very slow to me. And one of my pet peeves happened - events from book eight took place in this book at 40%. I hate going backwards. Anyway I’m not sure if I just put this book so much on a pedestal before I even started that it made it so much more disappointing. The little cliffhanger at the very end didn’t help either.

“Here. “ She shoved three large towels at his chest. “Get out of those wet clothes and dry off. Don’t worry,” she promised with a grin. “I’m not going to take advantage of you.”
He actually smiled then. “Would you be offended if I expressed disappointment?”

Death of Darkness is the mind-blowing, phenomenal and literally earth-shaking ninth entry in Dianne Duvall’s amazing Immortal Guardians saga. Seth receives his well-earned HEA with a riveting story that will heartily take your breath away. This tale will work well as a stand alone read if that is your preference, but fans will be tinkled pink as all their favorite characters from previous books play supporting roles. Series’ fans can also expect to be elated by stunning revelations about the Guardians’ past. Can a cure for the virus be around the corner?

Have you ever read a book in which you dread every time one of the lead characters’ phone rings? For millennia, Seth has been the father-figure for the Immortal Guardians. Celibate since tragically losing his mortal wife and children long ago, his family has since solely consisted of his beloved Guardians. He feels their joys and pain and takes complete responsibility for their safety. Since the villainous Gershom has risen in power equal to Seth’s, the danger to Seth’s beloved Guardians has been exponentially increased. The situation has dissolved to where workaholic Seth is on duty 24/hours a day in a never-ending struggle to keep his family safe from Gershom and his minions. Precious stolen moments with his adopted daughter, Ami, and his granddaughter, Adira, afford him a rare smile. Then, Seth meets Leah and experiences a joyful break from his bleak existence. Seth tries to deny himself the pleasure of Leah’s company but his friends, family and fate conspire against him.

Leah is a confident, mature human woman in her forties with a painful past somewhat similar to Seth’s losing her husband and child in a shocking accident years ago. She has clawed herself back from a depressing existence and now owns a children’s store which Ami and Adira frequent. Since the Guardians can’t be too careful with Gershom about, Seth and David visit Leah’s store to ensure that she’s not mind-controlled by Gershom. His visit aligns with certain adorable moments in which Adira plays match-maker linking Seth’s and Leah’s hands. But, Leah doesn’t want to be Seth’s cougar girl-friend so they agree to be friends until Leah is attacked.

I love Seth and Leah. He’s gorgeous, strong, generous, responsible and kind. She’s self-assured and hootingly rolls with the flow. Their banter is precious and her comments especially provide a plethora of laugh-out-loud moments. The chemistry between them is sweet and hot, hot, hot. Even days after finishing this book, my heart continues to sing for this couple.

Following please find a few of my favorite lines from Death of Darkness:

“Leah,” he whispered. Heart slamming against his ribs, he knelt beside her.
She glanced at his hand on her breast. “C-cradle robber,” she accused with a faint smile. “If I’d kn-known that was all I had to do to get you to feel me up, I w-would’ve gotten shot sooner.”
---
Seth ditched his pants.
Her eyes widened.
“Don’t say it,” he warned as he knelt on the edge of the bed.
“Don’t say what?” she asked, still staring at the hard length that strained toward her.
Grasping her delicate ankles, he eased her legs apart. “Big hands, big feet…”
Her lips twitched as she met his gaze. “Fine. I’ll just think it.”
---
“It storms when you make love?”
“Apparently.”
Turning back to the large warriors in the hallway, Leah flashed them all a grin. “Well then, boys, you’d better put your rain boots on. Because monsoon season is coming.”

Death of Darkness is teeming with passion, humor, action and suspense. It is a perfectly paced paranormal urban fantasy paired with a timeless romance. The book is big consisting of nearly 700 pages - all WITHOUT A SINGLE DULL MOMENT. NADA! NOT A ONE! I’m thrilled that there is more to come in this superlative, wonderfully fun, gripping series. I wonder whose story will be told next…? I hope dreadlock David’s is coming up soon, but I’m game for anyone’s in Dianne’s Immortal Guardians universe!

Book source ~ ARC. My review is voluntary and honest.

The Immortal Guardians have been fighting for the safety of humanity for thousands of years. Seth is their leader, the stern disciplinarian, the mother hen, the worrier – he is the heart and soul of the Immortal Guardians. But he’s not like the other Immortal Guardians. He’s one of the Others and one of his former brethren is targeting him through his beloved Guardians. Gershom has lost his damn mind if he thinks Seth is just going to stand by and let him hurt and kill humans, gifted ones, and Immortal Guardians. Oh, hell no!

When Leah Somerson walks into his life, for the first time in several millennia Seth is torn in his duty. He must protect everyone, but he’s so lonely. Dare he allow himself to explore a relationship when Armageddon is about to break loose? As the other Guardians cotton onto Seth’s attraction to Leah, he may not have a choice. For the first time ever, they are plotting against him. But don’t worry, it’s really for him. Hell, if it were a Facebook relationship status it would say “It’s complicated.”

This series continues to sit in my Top Ten Favorite Series List. I sound like a broken record when I write my review for each story that comes out. I love it. I love them all. But Seth’s story…man, oh, man. Dianne Duvall outdid herself with this one. First of all, it’s massive. And Seth deserves every single page. Besides, there is a lot going on! Then there’s the characters. They step off the page. Almost literally. Strong women, strong men, a wonderful mix of paranormal elements, action, hot yummy steaminess, tension, laughter, and a whole gamut of emotions. I care for each and every character. Except the villains, of course. I started plowing through this book the day I received it, staying up way, way, way past my bedtime. I didn’t have a chance to finish it in one sitting, but I finished the next day. I even went back a few chapters to reread since I was so tired the night before I was afraid I may have missed something. I was so embedded and invested in the story it took me a few days to recover from my book hangover. I love and hate when that happens because I mourn the book world when I have to return to the real world. It doesn’t help that these stories are set in my home state of North Carolina, only about an hour from my location. It makes the setting even more real for me.

I don’t know what else to tell you. If the thought of starting yet another series is too daunting (trust me, I know that feeling) then have no fear. You can definitely read this book as a standalone. However, if you haven’t started with book 1, do so. Right now! *cough* I mean, please do so. Honestly, this book will have so much more depth and delicious richness if you do.

Whaaaat??? I'm only at 25% on my Kindle, and Seth and David are talking about how they still grieve for Stanislav ... Yo, Duvall, they found him in the last book ... WHO PROOFS THIS SHIT?!?!

Now at 40%, and I had to open "Awaken the Darkness" to verify that I was reading a cut and paste of Chapter 13...SERIOUSLY?!?

I hope there is not another update.

Well, I'm finished. The book started off beautifully, just like Seth, then turned into a joke. As a 55 year-old successful woman, I can't grasp how Leah went from being an intelligent, successful, entrepreneur to a driveling idiot. I love humor, but her rhetoric was nonsensical. Fun and sophistication are not mutually exclusive!!!

What purpose the rediscovery of Stanislav had in the book, I'll never understand, because this will not be reread. I loved Yuri and Cat's appearance, Seth's acceptance of Yuri's passing and Bastien's reconciliation with his sister. This storyline came and went in the blink of an eye. Would it have been too hard to have at least one meaningful conversation between Bastien and Cat???

SPOILER ... STOP

We find the missing guardians only to have them forgotten about. HELLO, DUVALL, ARE YOU THERE? You started a relationship between Tessa and Leah, then threw it out the window. Cliff is on his way out, Emma is heartbroken, then he's better, and we don't visit with them again. I mean, seriously, Seth's dad is the catalyst for Cliff's (even if it's temporary) and Seth's recovery, and no one mentions it or Seth's dad's appearance. This was monumental!!!! Where is Melanie, and why isn't she running any tests? Where's Cliff's happy return to Emma and Bastien? Where is Stewart's hope that he may get a reprieve as well? Instead, we get to reread chapter 13 from Stanislav's book. Seth shares every secret, even to people he just met. He becomes, hell, I don't know what he becomes. Both he and Leah mentally regress at an unnatural pace. The final showdown with Gershom was meh...It felt strained. The biracial humor was not funny. The wedding was stupid. The wedding gift was a total slap in the face to Tomasso and Cassandra. Why even introduce these characters?

So much is wrong with this book. This should have been the best one of all. Then, the ending: 1. Are you going to tell me that they're going to let Adira stare out a window with an unknown car approaching? 2. What a great character to introduce, but 3. Duvall still needs to rewrite this book, not introduce a whole new storyline!!! I am sooooooo disappointed!!
