The unstoppable Hegemony invasion has reached the very heart of the Confederation. Battle after desperate battle has been fought, and each time, the Confeds have been pushed back, columns of battered and blasted ship retreating from system to system. Now, they prepare to grimly defend the capital world of Megara, the very center of the Confederation.
Tyler Barron prepares for what could be his final battle, a final desperate defense, one last chance to stem the tide of Hegemony conquest and subjugation. The fleet is ready, its exhausted crews prepared to fight with all the strength that remains to them. Still, the enemy is overpoweringly strong, and the odds of victory are slipping quickly away.
But, there is still hope. From unexpected allies. From the grit and determination of the defending fleets and their spacers. And, from a plan so daring it borders on the impossible…a wild and desperate gamble to stem the tide of conquest and halt the enemy.
It is night, and everywhere there is darkness, but the Confederation is not beaten yet. Barron and his comrades will stand, and they will struggle to somehow endure the darkness and fight through to the dawn.

Jay has again produced a novel that kept me excited from the first page to the last. I laughed, I cried, I cheered and gasped in surprise. I freely admit being an addict.
Admiral Tyler Barron and the Confederation is facing its pending destruction. The Hegemony is on the move and the Confederation is in disarray! The next target for the Hegemony is the capital planet of the Confederation, Megera. In addition to that pending doom, the Confederation and Admiral Barron just lost their senior military commander, Admiral Vann Striker. Now it looks like Tyler Barron will have to shoulder that load as well as his own command. But, he doesn’t want the job, not yet anyway. He feels that he needs to be leading the fight, not back at some HQ waiting for the enemy. So, they bring retired Admiral Dustin Nguyen out of retirement to command all Confederation military ops. He is a famous warrior who fought along side the famous Admiral Barron, Tyler Barron’s Grandfather.
The one thing you should remember from the previous books in this series, is that the Hegemony has far superior technology and an almost unimaginable supply of starships. They have battleships with rail guns that far out-range the Confederations primary weapon, but they do not have starfighters! And that has been their Achilles heal so far, but it’s not been enough. Captain Jake Stockton has been placed in command of all Confederation starfighter operations and he has done a fantastic job, but the number of starfighters available is slowly dwindling down.
Admiral Tyler has got to come up with something. He assigns Captain Andi Lafarge a mission to go to the Institute and rescue several top scientist that were working madly on some advanced weaponry. She was then to take them to the Calvus System and planet Craydon. This was one of the seven heavily industrial planets of the Confederation core. It was the major ship building center for the Confederation and they were working at a frantic pace to produce more starships. They needed the scientist there to make any modifications that might help in this war. Andi felt that Tyler was just giving her a mission to keep her out of the coming battles and he was, but this was something that needed to be done.
In addition to this special mission, Admiral Sara Eaton was directed to go to the far Rim independent “empires” and tell them of the Hegemony and warn them that their assistance was required now or they would soon be destroyed just like the Confederation. Whether or not she could convince of pompous fools to believe her was her challenge. Then again, we’re back to Dannith with the dwindling Marine resistance who are about done for. They have one last mission planed, but even it it succeeds, it will be the end of the resistance on Dannith.
As you can see, there is a lot going on in this book. It did seem to be a long book, but it was very exciting. The Confederation is in a fight for its life, and then the Union decides it’s time to try and ally with the Hegemony and get a piece of the Confederation while they can. That plan doesn’t go as well as they would have liked.
This story isn’t over yet. Although we’ve gone through 10 books already, we’re just now getting to a possible end of the Hegemony piece. I don’t know if there’s one final battle or if the Hegemony will be attacked back home by the “Others” or what might happen. Things do look a little brighter for the Confederation, but they still have a long way to go.
Author is good writer, or at least good enough to be entertaining. Throughout series, he has a scripted style where story is told through multiple MC’s and their POV. Always sub-plots so when main story and major MC POV reach critical, author switches over to another subplot and POV. This, of course, creates — heightens tension n drama and we readers have to wait, and wait, reading through until we get back to storyline that we really want to read about.
The author is very repetitive throughout story and is a trend throughout series. Hate to figure out how much of book is repetition because it does get distracting. Battles are now more strategic and focus more on fleet actions and MC’s feelings during. The ‘Mil’ portions are diluted and convey little meaningful military.
Discrepancies abound but since overall story is entertaining, we ignore. This particular book has more typos, grammar errors than usual. Our beloved MC Admiral kinda goes into a shell in this one and no good reasons for it are given unless we are to assume he’s PTSD out. If it’s PTSD, not well done.
And author just can’t help himself and includes this genres love and mainstay of PC, SJW issues. We good guys just can’t stay away from corruption and elite cowardice.
Candidly, these Soaps are read, time fillers for me until there’s something I really want to get into and read become available. If not KU, not sure if I’d purchase .
Another installment of the Blood on the Stars read - I promised myself I would read as slowly as possible just to spin it out a bit....sigh...that didn't work and now I'm left wanting desperately to read the next book in the series. Once I started Nightfall I just couldn't stop reading (except to grab a few zzz's and go to work), I had to know what happened next. Darn it, Jay, you've really yanked me into this story big time with your superb plot-lines, action and characters (both good and bad) and now I can't get enough of this brilliant series. Nightfall was a great title for this installment as the Confederation faces the reality that they may not win the war against the more powerful Hegemony. Even Tyler is struggling to find hope, but he will give everything he's got to make the Hegemony pay a high price for invading the Confederation even if it means he has to fight side by side with former enemies. With it's massive battles, dog-fights and action, Nightfall is an excellent installment in the Blood on the Stars series; looking forward to the next book in the series with great anticipation
Another great romp. The previous book saw Ricard Lille set loose in he Capital of Megra to 'assist' with undermining the Confederation government. Numerous characters that had been with us since book 1 did not make it to book 10. The last time Ricard involved himself with politics he killed the entire ruling body of his own government. Indeed, Ricard's policy was when in doubt, kill everyone. I miss Ricard.
Now the Confederation finds itself facing final destruction. The bad guys hail from beyond the Badlands and I have some sympathy for their cause. They mean well and seek to impose a strict Meritocracy on the Galaxy. However the Galaxy don't agree with that sort of thing, so its going to be another glorious p1ssing contest. Break out the lasers, launch all fighters, ramming speed.

This is book 10 in the series, if you are still reading it you either love it or are a masacist. You hate yourself. Either way, something becomes clear. According to the abilities of the "Masters", genetically, they are superior. One can surely question the ethics of making everyone below a set level slaves or purely workers, but one cannot question that there is a lot more our minds and bodies can do. Live longer, yes please! Can I work longer so that I don't become bored? Yes please, now I'd like to choose. We have been breeding better horses and athletic people for ages, look at the times for the 100 metres. There are no hemophiliacs amongst the Jewish community, hmm, wonder why? Steven Hawkins would have lived better without MS, yes?
Before you start this one, please note it is the tenth book a series: if you haven’t read the previous books in order, the characters and situations will not make much sense to you.
I liked this one although, without having a spoiler, I will say some of the battle scenes made me want to say “bull.” It ends with the usual ending with a bit of a “to be continued” that makes you want to start reading the next one of the series. I picked this up for $2.99 in the Kindle store and certainly received more than $2.99 worth of entertainment value out of it. If you have enjoyed the Blood on the Stars series I imagine you will like this one, also.
Having gotten this far in this series and having high hopes for this book,I wasn't disappointed! The desperate battle ,apocalyptic battle kicks off at Megara.I was only slightly sad that there's another book after this,so the stories aren't finished by any means. This book seemed shorter than the others, and I've completed it in a day. If it is shorter, that's not a bad thing ,it's riveting, fast paced and engrossing. I felt this book to be better written with very few repetitious portions and superfluous words. Onwards to the next installment!
It really is challenging to keep things fresh and interesting as a series extends into its 10 outing. Nightfall is competently told, and leans heavily on its own tried and tested formulae. Jay Allan is certainly never tired or repeating the maxim that wars are won by logistics.
The problem is that it really didn’t offer enough; instead we have a ‘bridging’ book that seems too keen to reach book 11. That leads to pacing issues, and a sense that it sometimes felt replaceable by its own synopsis.
Great books, but I wish a person knew how many were in the series before starting to read the first book.
I enjoyed the books very much, now I got to read something else and try to pick up where I left off in this series before I forget what's going on. 😀 I'd sure recommend this series to anybody who likes Sci-fi, but not until the series was completed. Just putting my two cents worth in. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed the books and Jay Allen spins a great story. :-)
Great new edition to the series. I feel like these characters have become part of my family and I feel every loss. I cried a few times jut thinking this might be the end for a character. I won't say if that happened or not but just the thought in my head while reading brought me tears. I can't wait for the next installment and I don't know what I will do when I can say soon, I have read everything Jay Allen has published!!!
I could not stop reading this book. I read through the night at least 2 times ! It was looking bad for the rim dwellers right up to the end of the book but they never give up. The Hegemony are just to strong and advanced of force ... Or are they. The next book will telling hope. If you have not started this series get going you will not regret it.
Jay Allan does it again! An outstanding series that is well thought out, well written, and just plain exciting to read. Character development and rock solid storyline make this series. The military aspect is right on. Although set way in the future, Jay draws on his military background to bring credibility throughout these books. Keep them coming!
Tyler Barron and his Confederation comrades continue to battle the Hegemony, a race of intellectuals, supported by genetically altered warriors. The Confederation has a technology deficit, is outmanned and outgunned, but continues to survive on their "will to live". Can they hold out until help, in the form of alliances with other space faring people, arrives.
I enjoyed the continuity that this book adds to the story that Jay Allen has created! The characters are heroic and developing as their experience and battles solidify the normal human differences oppose special class divisions that caracterise nonhuman organizations. Hopefully we favor the underdogs in this war!
I have enjoyed this entire series, I enjoyed this book as well. The characters are so well developed even the super genetic Lee enhanced ones. The author makes you want to know more about them as well as the regular human counterparts. Space battles a good as well as the infantry battles on land. Can’t wait for the next book.
Repetitive. Telegraphed the high point of this novel in the last novel, the only difference was who would ultimately be the character that saves the day. There is plenty of room for the story line and character backgrounds to be retold several more times. In spite of everything it is still a fun read with familiar characters.
Tyler, Andie, Jake and a host of other characters. A battle for mankind continues. Both sides are not equally matched but with Jake the fighter wings make a difference. A lot of insight what everyone is feeling. I like what Admiral Winters observed. Such a shame to have to bomb good engineering. Must read next book
Tyler and his band of warriors fight to save the Confederation...with VERY unexpected allies! Great battles, strategy, desperation and bravery. It made me lose hours of sleep because I couldn't stop reading Read it....See the war...the hope...and the heros!
Absolutely the most riveting climax to a series that I've been filling since the beginning. The characters are rich and we'll developed. Can't wait for the next chapter to unfold.
I enjoy the excellent blend of ground combat and space naval battles that Mr. Allan weaves. This series is shaping up to be my favorite from him and easily in my top 5. Look forward to where the story takes us.
It just keeps getting better and the action is outstanding, when ever it looks like they are going to lose some thing happens to save the day. Just keep up the good work and I’m looking foreword to your next book. Thank you
Another thrilling novel by Mr. Allen . The courage and devotion of the characters on this day Dec.7,2018 remind me of the courage and sacrifice given 77 years ago DEC.7,1941
Well I have totally enjoyed read the Blood on the Stars series. Fantastic storylines and great action. Have spotted a few thesaurus problems but otherwise great. Well donr
Though I didn’t hunk it could happen Jay Allan wrote another Blood on the Stars book that was more thrilling then the ones before it. This series of books is all action and turn around that the reader would never expect.
Starting from the first book to this book had been a pleasant and exhilarating story, I love seeing all the characters and their advances throughout the story and it keeps getting better and better!
Closer to a 2.75. Spent a major portion of the book lamenting the pre determined loss only to have won a Pyrrhic victory thrust upon the Confederation & allies in the last few pages. Guess this is what happens when I get out of book sequence.
How is it possible that not only one miracle but two miracles happen again at the same time from different ends of the universe! Courage in the face of the enemy! Fight to the end! Never ever give up! There is always hope!
The invaders hold both the Union Planet and the Confederation Planet. New Rim Forces arrive and save the batter fleet. Book 11 should be an interesting read.
