Mysteries of the well-known American writer Mary Roberts Rinehart include The Circular Staircase (1908) and The Door (1930).

People often called this prolific author the American version of Agatha Christie. She is considered the source of the phrase "The butler did it," though the exact phrase doesn't appear in her works, and she invented the "Had-I-But-Known" school of mystery writing.

Rinehart wrote hundreds of short stories, poems, travelogues, and special articles. Many of her books and plays were adapted for movies, such as The Bat (1926), The Bat Whispers (1930), and The Bat (1959). Critics most appreciated her murder mysteries.

The longest book I’ve ever read. Some of the stories were caught in their time but others, especially the stories set during WW1 were powerful. I think I skipped one of the stories - the tome IS exceptionally long. But the most fascinating section was the author’s writings from the front lines in Belgium and France during WW1. She was a war correspondent and her interactions were echoed in her stories. It took me most of the year to finish this book and now I want to learn more about the author and the first world war. Still didn’t find the story in which the butler did it.

Many hours of pleasure

This is a very comprehensive collection ranging from her "had we but known " thrillers to the really funny Trish stories and a factual description of the author's experiences at the Western Front. Also a couple of melodramatic romances which I never thought she would write. Great buy.

Old fashioned, but good. I like to read about how people thought and acted in the past from someone who was writing at that time.
