It’s been revised and re-edited for your reading pleasure.
Romance author Suz deMello wants you to know that she has finished the process of re-acquiring rights to her books from various publishers, and then re-editing and repackaging each for indie release.
All her books are available in fresh, re-edited and re-covered new editions.
Suz deMello says, "I'm a cliche...A vegan yoga teacher from California who loves walks on the beach, cuddling her dogs and romance novels." But she's an award-winning, best-selling writer who's hit several best-seller lists, been short-listed for the RITA and reviewed by such prestigious publications such as Kirkus, Library Journal and Publisher's Weekly.
Suz uses a pseudonym to protect her privacy. But if you're a romance fan, you've probably read one of her 20+ books or have heard of her, since she's known for fast-paced, layered novels charged with humor as well as emotion.
Her personal motto is: Never stop learning, never stop growing. She's had at least five careers she can remember: librarian, trial attorney, Starbucks barista, grant writer, and yoga teacher. Perhaps her most interesting career move was teaching English to preschoolers in China! But she loves to write romance and teach yoga. She also has earned a 2d degree black belt in kenpo karate.
She currently resides in Mazatlan, Mexico, where she practices yoga, cuddles her dogs and walks on the beach every day. And yes, she's writing romance—this time, another Regency.
This is the second book that I have read from Suz deMello. I am pretty much certain that I have posted last year a review for Lord Devere's Ward.
I did enjoy that book very much and I was really touched when the opportunity to read and review Wounded Warrior happened.
I have to say that I was quite pleased to go from a Regency to a Contemporary romance and I was curious to see how that change of era would work out. I may be mistaken but I think most authors stick to their genre or period of choice and rarely stray. I could be wrong of course, but I can tell you right now that Suz did an amazing job with Wounded Warrior!
I read it in one go and could not put it down! I was hooked as soon as I saw how the 2 main characters Fisher and Valerie meet! It was so funny and unforgettable.
I found both characters to be truly lovely and my heart went out straight to Fisher, out of the 2 he was the one with the more complex and painful background. At the same time, Valerie was just plain wonderful, I think we need more characters like her as we go. She was smart, funny, independent and goes for what she wants.
I admire a woman with a plan!
Put those two in a room together and I was the one in a need of a cold shower! I am telling you. The chemistry was there and I was living for it.
In addition to Valerie and Fisher, we have a whole slew of truly entertaining people, by that I mean the residents of Takinsha Island and I loved them. I would not mind revisiting some and I would love to see some of them get some happy endings.
The main one I have in mind is Nina but then, there is also Brent that I liked very much and would love to see them both get a happy ending!
What I am trying to say, is that I am fully for revisiting Takinsha Island from time to time with new books (just my 2 cents!).
As you can see, I really enjoyed Wounded Warrior and got really attached to everyone in the book. I am not going to go into details and spoil it for you, but I will tell you that Fisher is suffering from war-related PTSD. Though there is nothing truly horribly graphic, just be aware, that there are a couple of scenes that could be difficult.
Frankly, the book was beautifully written, the characters were outstanding and as I mentioned before, I would love to revisit the island again and get to know other inhabitants better.
I am going to be very highly recommending Wounded Warrior to you all, and I hope you love it as much as I did!
A very enjoyable contemporary erotic romance. Sweet story, steamy sex and very likeable characters. I liked it very much and look forward to reading more from deMello.
This book is a difficult one to rate. It had a wonderful setting in Alaska, a great premise for romance, and a delightful ending. Valerie was a positive, wonderful leading lady. Fischer was stubborn and drove me crazy at times, but he was a decent man.
So why not more stars? I did not like how Fischer kept leaving Valerie for longer and longer, even weeks at a time, and yet expected to have her there whenever he wanted. After a while, I thought Valerie truly would be better with a different man. The pacing of the book just seemed off, and then we finally were going to get the long- awaited reunion scene for the couple, the book just abruptly cut off! Then a five year later epilogue just glossed over the details and left me wanting more. I felt cheated by the author, and it seem like the author just wanted to rush and finish the book. Not cool.
Review by Ursula: Suz deMello had a concept that caught my attention right away. A young woman moving to Alaska for a new career and to find a new man. A land where the men out number the woman, what better odds could she ask for?
The story started out well enough, but quickly became somewhat stagnant. It seemed that for awhile, the story was stuck in a cycle of 'love em and leave em'. The lead man, Fisher and the lead lady Valerie, had sparks flying from the moment they saw each other. The only problem was, he didn't want anything more serious that a good time, with no strings. But once the feelings become more intense, he pulls away and disappears for a time. Then they come back together for great sex only to have him pull away again. This happens enough that it becomes almost boring.
Luckily, I kept reading, and am I happy I did. Once the stagnant cycle breaks free, the story really gets good. I really enjoyed the last 1/3 of the story the best. Overall, the story is good and would make a good read by the pool in the summer or by the fire in the winter. But the ending is what takes it from good to really good!
Valerie's job has transferred her from LA to a small island in Alaska. She meets Fisher at the dock and wants to make him her fuck buddy. Seemed a little shallow to me, but who's to say. Anyway Fisher kind of thinks the same thing, then second guesses himself and third guesses himself, which is a running theme in this book. He says and does things that make him seem like he's interested in more from Valerie and then changes his mind. I don't know how Valerie stands it. Eventually there's a HEA but with the back and forth from Fisher, I wasn't as invested in it, sometimes thinking Valerie should just forget about him completely.
I enjoyed this one. It wasn't a *great* read for me (there were a couple of wording things that made me cringe, sorry) but it was enjoyable. I liked their chemistry and that they sort of had this magnetism, even if Fisher was trying very hard to stop it. I *sort of* got his reasons, but at the same time I wanted to choke him for not just telling her what his deal was. And then when he does finally tell her, he's pushing her away at the same time! I liked learning about the quirkiness of the area and the quirkiness of the people. I've never been to Alaska, so I hope some of it is true. :-) Gotta have some fun in all that cold weather! Probably 3.5 stars if they'd let us give halfsies.
I really liked the story with this book. The reason that my rating is not higher is because there were times that I feel situations got glanced over when some items should have been talked about a little more. It would have been very difficult to dialogue, but I felt it needed done at a couple spots.
