Δεν ξέρω γιατί το διάβασα το βιβλίο.Από βλακεία,απο περιέργεια,για χαβαλέ,για όλα μαζί;Απο τότε που έγινα μέλος σε διάφορες βιβλιοφιλικές ομάδες στο fb βαρέθηκα να βλέπω μπροστά μου τα βιβλία της Μαντά και της Δημουλίδου ακολουθούμενα απο τα αναλογα σχολια:τέλειιιιιοοοο,φοβερόοοοο,αγαπημένοοοοοο κλπ.Υπο φυσιολογικές συνθήκες δεν θα τα έπιανα ποτέ στα χέρια μου αλλά με όλη αυτή την πλύση εγκεφάλου ήθελα να δω τι στο διάολο γράφουν και παθαίνουν παραλήρημα οι φανς.Σηκώνω τα χέρια ψηλά.Δεν καταλαβαίνω.Διάβαζα το βιβλίο και νόμιζα οτι μου μιλάει η μεγαλύτερη κουτσομπόλα της γειτονιάς για άτομα που δεν γνωρίζω και που δεν με ενδιαφέρει και να μάθω γιατί κουράστηκα.Κουράστηκα με το ασταμάτητο μπλα μπλα για τα σόγια,τους γειτόνους,τα ξαδέρφια,τα σκυλιά ,τα γατιά,κου-ρά-στη--κα!Δεν θέλω άλλα κουτσομπολιά,ποια πήγε με ποιον,πως ήταν τα πλούσια σπίτια τους ,τα πλούσια φουστάνια τους ,οι λίρες και τα χρυσαφικά τους.Πολύ βαρετό ρε παιδιά!
Με εκνευρισε η προσπαθεια της συγγραφέως να βάλει ντε και καλά μέσα στο βιβλίο ένα πρόσφυγα απο τη Συρία ,βάζοντας την πρωταγωνίστρια να τον "μαζέψει απο το δρόμο σαν αδέσποτο"(έτσι λέει στο βιβλίο,δεν είναι δικά μου λόγια) γιατί αυτη δεν είναι ρατσίστρια οπότε μπορεί να μαζέψει τον άμοιρο Καρίμ που την αποκαλεί "μάνταμ" αφού ενώ μαθαίνει γρήγορα τα ελληνικά για κάποιο λόγο δεν μπορεί να προφέρει το πανδύσκολο όνομα της:Φέ-νια.Τρομερά δυσκολο.Kαι το αποτέλεσμα είναι ένας Σύριος πρόσφυγας να σέρνεται στα πόδια της ηρωίδας,να της κάνει όλες τις δουλειές,να καθαρίζει ,να μαγειρεύει,να σερβίρει ,να είναι συνέχεια "γιες μάνταμ,νο μάνταμ,μάλιστα μάνταμ,καλό μάνταμ" και να θυμίζει το Βουτσά που τον είχανε βάψει με φούμο ή κάτι Ινδούς υπηρέτες την εποχή της αποικιοκρατίας που βλέπουμε σε κάτι παλιές ταινίες.Ντροπή.
Κατα τ'αλλα απ'όλα έχει ο μπαχτσές.Και κακοποίηση και βιασμούς και αιμομιξία (έτσι μοιάζει στην αρχή δηλαδή)και πορνεία,και προσφυγικό και μεταναστευτικό και ολίγον απο ιστορία και τόσους έρωτες που ζαλίζεσαι,ξεχνάς ποιος αγάπησε ποια και γιατί,και τόσες συμπτωσεις που καταντάνε αηδία.Και φυσικά έχει και την απόλυτη κακιά που καταστρέφει ζωές έτσι χωρίς λόγο και εννοείται οτι στο τέλος ζησαν αυτοί καλά κι εμείς καλύτερα.
Anyway,πολλά είπα και δεν αξίζει και τον κόπο,βαριεμαι.

Έχω διαβάσει τόσο Σμύρνη, Πόντο, Κωνσταντινούπολη και χαμένες πατρίδες που όχι απλώς έχω πάθει overdose αλλά νομίζω πως φτάνει για να καλύψω και τα διαβάσματα των παιδιών μου, των εγγονών μου, των δισέγγονων άντε και μέχρι τα τρισέγγονα. Όταν λοιπόν έπιασα στα χέρια μου το νέο βιβλίο της Μαντά (αυτό με το μαύρο εξώφυλλο γιατί ταιριάζει και με το καταθλιπτικό μου look), δεν είχα καμιά ιδιαίτερη αξίωση. Ομολογώ πως ήμουν σίγουρο πως θα ακολουθούσε ένα γεμάτο κράξιμο ποστ… (τα συνηθισμένα δηλαδή…)
Η υπόθεση σχετικά απλή: Μια γυναίκα χωρίς στον ήλιο μοίρα, βρίσκεται ξαφνικά κληρονόμος ενός σπιτιού κι ενός αρκετά μεγάλου χρηματικού ποσού. Από αυτή την εξ ουρανού κληρονομιά ανακαλύπτει πως όχι μόνο δεν φύτρωσε ξαφνικά αλλά είχε και παππού και θείες και ξαδέρφια και ό,τι εν πάσει περιπτώση έχει ένα ελληνικό σόι. Ξεκινάει λοιπόν, ένα ταξίδι στο παρελθόν, στην Κωνσταντινούπολη από το 1910 μέχρι δώθε με την ιστορία της ζωής δύο οικογενειών όπου τα μέλη της αλληλοερωτεύονται αλλά ποτέ δεν είναι δυνατόν να ζήσουν μαζί. Συνδετικός κρίκος πάντα ένα κόσμημα – ένα γράμμα από χρυσό.
Όπως θα έλεγε και οποιοσδήοτε ήρωας από το βιβλίο με αυτή τη χαρακηριστική προφορά της Πόλης: «ομολογώ βρε πεζεβέγκη πως με άρεσε. Ναι με άρεσε».
Μπορεί να υπήρχαν κάποιες συμπτώσεις και ίσως κάποιες κλισεδιές, όμως η Μαντά αυτή τη φορά κατάφερε να με συνεπάρει με την ιστορία της και να γυρίζω τις σελίδες για να δω τι θα γίνει. Δίνει και ιστορικές πινελιές. Της πηγαίνει τελικά η Πόλη της Μαντά.
Οι διάλογοι ήταν ζωντανοί, όλοι με το ιδίωμα της Πόλης και προφανώς η συγγραφέας το κατέχει το ιδίωμα και αυτό φάνηκε. Ζωντανό κι αληθινό. Ήταν σαν να άκουγα τους ανθρώπους να μιλάνε γύρω μου.
Το βιβλίο με ταξίδεψε και μου χάρισε μερικές πραγματικά χαλαρωτικές στιγμές. Μπορεί να μην ήταν το βιβλίο που θα στοιχιώσει τα όνειρά μου ή που θα θυμάμαι μια ζωή, ήταν όμως ένα βιβλίο που με ταξίδεψε, με χαλάρωσε και μου έδωσε και το απαραίτητο happy end που επιζητώ σε αυτού του είδους τα βιβλία.
Μπορείτε τώρα να με κράξετε ελεύθερα, αλλά εγώ το ευχαριστήθηκα.
Βαθμολογία: 8.8 / 10 (θα τολμούσα να δώσω κι εννιαράκι γιατί αυτούς τους διαλόγους πολύ τους ευχαριστήθηκα, τελικά όσο και να λατρεύω την ξένη λογοτεχνία το DNA μου επιζητεί τις δόσεις του σε χαμένες πατρίδες) όμως μου φάνηκε πως η ιστορία του Καρίμ μπήκε για να είμαστε και politically correct.

Αν εξαιρέσω τη ....ροπή προς τη συμπτωσιολογία....πολύ καλύτερο από τα πιο πρόσφατα, μου θύμισε την παλαιότερη ενδιαφέρουσα και αξιανάγνωστη γραφή της....

Wow! What can I say, this was fantastic.

This is an extremely powerful story of three generations of women and their unfulfilled dreams.
There is sadness, bitterness and hate as well as discovery and love.
The multi timeline set in Turkey and Greece is so well written and researched, and contains lots of historical facts. There is lots to take in, so it requires a lot of concentration and back-tracking, but well worth it.
I cannot recommend it highly enough. Very unputdownable.

Destiny caresses the few, but molests the many. Turkish Proverb

Greek and Turkish histories go back a long way, and I profess to knowing little about them, however it's clear that whichever people you belong to there is likely to be a bias towards their stories, and it as likely that these populations are more mixed than they would like to believe, and that there have been generations of cheerful intermingling, despite the differences that kept their identities separate.

However this is a story of Greek families living in what was then known as Constantinople (later renamed as Istanbul, one of many name changes - The city was founded in 667 BC and named Byzantium by the Greeks ), and how the same twist of fate affected three generations of the same two families, where a young woman and a young man fall in love, only to have the union thwarted by their parents - in each generation it is for a different reason, beginning with them not being of the same wealth and social status, where marriage was more of a contract between families decided by the father's.

He had married her not, of course, because he loved her, but because that was what her father had decided...Nobody thought of asking Kleoniki if she wanted to marry the grim Anargyros, with his rough hands and even rougher personality. Besides it was thought to be a very good marriage, since the groom was prosperous and an orphan.
"A big thing, that, my dear!" the matchmaker informed the girl. "Neither a mother-in-law in your face nor a father-in-law to boss you round. Lady and mistress of your own house!"

And in case they thought about falling into the terrain of forbidden love, there were the sins of those who'd had to flee, "discussed with horror and scorn in hushed voices at evening gatherings and tea parties".

Even if some woman, deep down inside, understood the girl, she didn't dare say so. Many romantic souls sighed secretly, calculating what a great love the girl must have felt to run off with her beloved, overlooking the fact that he was a Turk.

However, just because the son's obey their father's and the families are estranged, doesn't stop whatever magnetism exists from bringing the next generation together.

The story and family history is revealed in the present day as a middle age woman Fenia, arrives from Germany to hear from a lawyer in Athens that she has inherited a house from a grandfather she never met. She decides to stay and do up the house and various knocks at the door lead her to meet relatives bearing both good wishes, hostility and the gaps in their shared history.

And The Gold Letter - a beautiful gift imagined and designed by the first generation but never created, finds its way into Fenia's hands and connects the stories together.

I was a little sceptical when I began reading due to the clear prejudices of the characters, whether it was Greeks against Turks or the attitude of the men towards women and certainly the women in all these generations suffer greatly, those in the present day perhaps most of all, however they were indicative of their time and sadly of the reality in some lands where borders change over the years and not everyone can flee, but they remember the violence and deaths of members of their families in the past, which continues to keep them separate for generations.

I was reminded of the wonderful novel about a friendship between two children in the same village, one of Greek and one of Turkish origin by Louis de Bernieres Birds Without Wings, also a tragic love story, but one that combines the story of ordinary people's lives in the 1930's with a biography of the leader that will shift the balance of power in Turkey.

I enjoyed the novel, although it covers such a long period of time that there are many characters and connections to juggle and so not much time is spent with some. That said, it's clear that the author is a gifted storyteller invested in her characters, whom I enjoyed following and at times I felt almost like I watching this on film, it's an entertaining, episodic family drama of the old tradition, of couples trying to keep up family and cultural traditions.

Lena Manta was born in Istanbul, Turkey, to Greek parents and moved to Greece at a very young age. She lives in Athens, has written 13 books and this is her second to be translated into English.

Ξεκινώντας να διαβάσει κάποιος βιβλία της κυρίας Μαντά το σίγουρο είναι και πρέπει να της το αναγνωρίσουμε,ότι δεν το αφήνει από τα χέρια,παρά μόνο όταν φθάσει στην λέξη ΤΕΛΟΣ.Το συγκεκριμένο ανάγνωσμα μου θύμισε τα παλαιότερά της βιβλία όπου ρουφούσα,στην κυριολεξία και την τελευταία σειρά.Μετά,από καιρό λοιπόν με μία δυναμική επιστροφή (κατ’εμέ)ευχαριστήθηκα και απόλαυσα το βιβλίο της με τον μοναδικό ,πλέον,τρόπο της την γνωστή γραφή (και εκεί που πρέπει τοπικοί ιδιωματισμοί)που ρέει αβίαστα και συνθέτει χαρακτήρες ζωντανούς προκαλώντας πολλά συναισθήματα,υφαίνοντας μία όμορφη ιστορία που ξεκινά από την Πόλη του 1910 και φθάνει έως την Αθήνα του 2016.Μία περιπλάνηση στα στενά της Κωνσταντινούπολης και στις μυρωδιές της Ανατολής του παρελθόντος με εξαιρετικές περιγραφές και με πρωταγωνιστές ανθρώπους με προκαταλήψεις,ταμπού,ηθικούς κανόνες που εκείνη την εποχή ήταν απαράβατοι και που η ζωή τους περνά από πολλά στάδια και με την πάροδο επίσης μερικών Ιστορικών και Πολιτικών γεγονότων που σκιαγραφούνται ωραία κατά την διάρκεια της αφήγησης-πλοκής κρατώντας το ενδιαφέρον αμείωτο.Οι εναλλαγές παρελθόντος-παρόντος φέρνουν στο προσκήνιο την ιστορία τεσσάρων γενιών όπου κυριαρχεί ο έρωτας από γενιά σε γενιά,οι λανθασμένες κινήσεις,η μοίρα,το πεπρωμένο και αποφάσεις άλλων που ορίζουν τις ζωές εξ’αιτίας των αντιλήψεων και της νοοτροπίας που επικρατούσαν και ήταν υπεράνω όλων.Υπάρχουν βέβαια και κάποια συμβάντα ελλειπή και αδικαιολόγητα,αλλά μπροστά στην όμορφη αίσθηση που σου αφήνει το συγκεκριμένο ταξίδι περνούν απαρατήρητα.Είναι ένα βιβλίο-γράμμα από Χρυσό που δεν θα σας βαρύνει,αλλά θα βάλετε και εσείς κάπου την λέξη Σ’ΑΓΑΠΩ!

Κάτι τέτοια κάνει και θέλω να πιάσω ένα προς ένα στη σειρά, όσα δικά της δεν έχω ακόμη διαβάσει!!

Ύστερα από πλήθος πειραματισμών, η Λενα Μαντά επιστρέφει σε γνώριμα λημέρια ,με ένα βιβλίο που δικαιώνει κατά τη γνώμη μου τη διαχρονική αγάπη του κοινού προς εκείνη, με ένα αισθηματικό βιβλίο διαποτισμένο στιγμές Ιστορίας και κοινωνικά μηνύματα!
Το Γράμμα Από Χρυσό είναι για μένα η καλύτερη συγγραφική στιγμή της, συμπυκνώνοντας αρετές παλαιότερων ,πολυδιαβασμένων βιβλίων της, μέσα από ενα πρίσμα πιο ώριμο και καλοδουλεμένο, που προκαλεί ατόφια συγκίνηση απο την πρώτη σελίδα ως την τελευταία με αμείωτο το ενδιαφέρον.
Με το βιβλιο αυτό η Λένα Μαντά αφουγκράζεται για άλλη μια φορά τη "φωνή της ρίζας" και μας σεργιανά στους μαχαλάδες της Κωνσταντινουπολης μεσα από έναν κύκλο μεγαλοαστικών οικογενειών.
Το επεχείρησε και με τη Θεανώ της αυτό, μεταφέροντας με επιτυχία εικόνες ονειρικές της Βασιλεύουσας καθώς και την εθιμοτυπία των ελληνικών οικογενειών της Πόλης, μέχρι τη μοιραία 6η Σεπτεμβρίου του 1955 όταν ο τούρκικος όχλος εξαπέλυσε πογκρομ εναντίον των φιλήσυχων Ελλήνων...
Η ηρωίδα της έκτοτε όμως ακολούθησε μονοπάτια υπερβολής που αποκόπηκαν από την ατμοσφαιρα του υπλόλοιπου βιβλιου...
Στο "Γραμμά Από Χρυσό" η Λένα Μαντά αποκαθιστά αυτό το κομμάτι, αποδίδοντας στο θέμα τη βαρύτητα που του αρμόζει καθλόλη τη διάρκεια της αφήγησης, διατηρώντας μια αρμονική ακολουθία και ρεαλιστικότητα.
Πραγματεύεται την ίδια περίπου χρονική περίοδο,με τη Θεανώ παρέχοντας επιπλέον,χωρις να πλατειάζει, ενδιαφέροντα ιστορικά στοιχεία, όπως τα άγνωστα μαρτύρια που οι Κωνσταντινουπολίτες δοκίμασαν επί Β Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου (με τον εκτοπισμό των Χριστιανών αρρενων στα κολαστήρια του Ερζερούμ...)
Σπαρακτικές οι στιγμές του πογρόμ,της ελληνικής Kristallnacht-(σε αντιστοιχία με το πογκρομ εναντίον των Εβραίων του 1938 από τους Ναζί), γεμίζουν αγνάκτηση κάθε πολιτισμένο ον, κάθε φίλειρηνιστη και "πολίτη του Κόσμου"!
Γραμμένο σε γλώσσα εκλυστική, διαποτισμένη εύστοχα με στοιχέια της πιολίτικης ντοπιολαλιάς με απολαυστικό τρόπο
Τα πρόσωπα του "Γράμματος" όμως -και στην απωλεια και στην επιτυχία και στον ξεριζωμό, εξελίσσονται με απόλυτη φυσικότητα,με μαχητικότητα και πίστη, χωρις δαιμονοποιήσεις ή εξωρα'ι'σμούς .
Χαρακτήρες πειστικοί σαν το Βαλς-χωρίς μονοσημία και θέμα όμορφα διδακτικό για τον αναγνώστη...
Ανλάμεσα τουςε δεσπόζειο σίγουρα η Σμαράγδα με τη γλυκύτητα και τη σοφία της καλοσύνης της...
Πολυπρόσωπο και γυναικοκεντρικό σαν το Σπίτι Δίπλα Στο Ποτάμι- σαφώς πιο αληθοφανές και πιο προσγειωμένο από εκείνο- το Γράμμα Από Χρυσό μας ταξιδεύει σε έρωτες δυνατούς αλλά χειροπιαστούς, με κάθε πρόσωπο να διανύει τον προσωπικό του ανήφορο.
Επάλληλοι κύκλοι με αυτόνομη δυναμική, αλληλένδετοι, που ολοκληρώνονται συχνα΄στο σημείο τομής τους,χωρίς να παραμένει καμιά εκκρεμότητα...
Τα πισωγυρίσματα στον χρόνο είναι επιδέξια σκηνοθετημένα, χωρίς να διασαλεύουν τον ρυθμό της αφήγησης, ώστε να επιτείνουν την αγωνία και να αποσαφηνίζουν πτυχές, χωρίς πρόωρες αποκαλύψεις, πλην μιας προοικονομίας λίγο βιαστικής ίσως, στην αρχή.
Ίσως ο αναγνώστης υποψιαστεί τη σατανική σύπτωση που έχει παγιδέυσει τις δυο οικογένειες ,ωστόσο οι διαδρομές που οδηγούν σε αυτήν και ο τρόπος που σφυρηλατούνται οι χαρακτήρες μέσα από τις ματαίωσεις τους, παρέχει ανεκτίμητα μηνύματα ζωής.
Μέσα στην ενδιαφέρουσαα πλοκή παρεισφρέουν δυο επιπλεόν κοινωνικά ζητήματα...
Το πρώτο είναι το Προσφυγικό μέσα από εναν τρυφερό χαρακτήρα που θα σας φέρει δάκρυα στα μάτια υπενθυμίζοντας την ειρήνη ως αίτημα όλων των ανθρώπων όπου γης...
Το άλλο που προβάλλει εφιαλτικά είναι η ενδοοιικογενειακή κακοποίηση- με έμφαση στο παιδί...
Η Λένα Μαντά μέσα από αυτό κατορθώνει, μεταξύ άλλων, να ιχνηλατήσει την ψυχολογία του θύματος που ενοχοποιεί τον ίδιο του τον εαυτό και αυτοπαγιδεύεται σε Σύνδρομο της Στοκχόλμης, με έναν τρόπο που προσωπικά μου θύμισε έντονα το δράμα της Νατάσσα Κάμπους του "3.096 Μέρες",της Αυστρικής πιτσιρίκας που έζησε από τα 9 της ως τα 17 όμηρος του Βολφ Πρικοπλ.
Πλήθος νοημάτων, καταστάσεων και συναισθημάτων με απόηχο όμως πάντα την ελπίδα που γεννά μονάχα η ανθρωπιά και η διάθεση να δώσουμε και να μοιραστούμε...
Ανοίξτε λοιπόν αυτό το Γράμμα Από Χρυσό και θα γίνετε ποαραλήπτες του πιο ακριβού μηνύματος που αξίζει να το έχετε μότο στη ζωή, όπως το παρέδωσε η γιαγια -Σμαράγδα:
"Μη πενθείς χαμένους Παραδείσους:Χτίσε καινούριους!"

Υ.Γ. Έξυπνο το εύρημα με τα δυο εξώφυλλα...
Αν και το μαύρο δείχνει πιο αρχοντικό ,εγώ θα επέλεγα το χρυσό που πραγματικά, είναι πιο καλαίσθητο κι αισθανεσαι σα να λαμπυρίζει στα δάχτυλά σου ένα "φύλλο χρυσού" από το εργαστήρι του "Συμεών"!
Το 10/10 αντιστοιχέι στην κατηγορία του Αισθηματικού όπου ανήκει, καθώς κάθε βιβλίο αξιολογείται με γνώμονα την κατηγορία του και τους στόχους του...

Δυο οικογένειες που δεν έπρεπε ποτέ να συναντηθούν. Ένας έρωτας που πέρασε από γενιά σε γενιά. Συνδετικός κρίκος ένα κόσμημα. Ένα γράμμα από χρυσό και μέσα μια τόση δα φράση: Σ'αγαπώ!!!
Αθήνα 2016. Η Φένια Καραπάνου, κληρονομεί στην Κυψέλη το αρχοντικό του παππού της Περικλή Σέκερη,τον οποίο δεν γνώριζε, αφού εκείνη γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στη Γερμανία, χωρίς ποτέ της να γνωρίσει τους συγγενείς της μητέρας της. Μετά την εγκατάσταση της στο αρχοντικό, θα ανακαλύψει το γράμμα από χρυσό, αλλά και γράμματα από τους άνδρες της οικογένειας Κουγιουμτζή προς τις γυναίκες της οικογένειας της. Ένα ταξίδι που ξεκίνησε από την Κωνσταντινούπολη του 1910 μέχρι την Ελλάδα του 2016 και σημάδεψε τις ζωές των μελών των δύο οικογενειών.
Ένα ταξίδι, που στις αποσκευές του κουβαλά έρωτα, αγάπη αλλά και λάθη, μίση, προκαταλήψεις. Ήταν ξεχωριστό για μένα το ταξίδι αυτό, που ξεκινά από την υπέροχη Κωνσταντινούπολη (για την οποία λατρεύω να διαβάζω) στην οποία με μετέφερε με παραστατικό τρόπο η κ.Μαντά κάνοντας με να αισθανθώ, πως σεργιανούσα στις γειτονιές της, χόρευα στις βεγγέρες, όπως ένιωθα και την αγωνία κατά τη διάρκεια του πολέμου, ή το πλήγμα που δέχθηκε ο ελληνισμός με το Βαρλίκ Βεργκισί (φόρος περιουσίας). Τα ιστορικά στοιχεία είναι αριστοτεχνικά πλεγμένα με τη μυθοπλασία, χωρίς να κουράσουν. Αντιθέτως, μου δημιούργησαν την αίσθηση πως παρακολουθoύσα τις ζωές των ηρώων από πολύ κοντά, ή πως ίσως συμμετείχα, κρίνοντας πράξεις και αποφάσεις.
Και χρησιμοποιώντας τα λόγια ενός από τους ήρωες του βιβλίου -"μην κρίνουμε με λάθος κριτήρια. Μπορεί να μας φαντάζουν τώρα υπερβολικές κάποιες αντιδράσεις των ηρώων αυτής της ιστορίας αλλά για την εποχή όπου διαδραματίζονταν τα γεγονότα ήταν απολύτως φυσιολογικές! " σελ.428 -μπορεί να θύμωσα με πράξεις ή αποφάσεις των ηρώων, αλλά απόλαυσα από την πρώτη ως την τελευταία σελίδα το ταξίδι αυτό!!!Όταν έκλεισα και την τελευταία σελίδα πήρε τη θέση του στη βιβλιοθήκη μου πλάι σε όλα τα υπόλοιπα βιβλία της κ.Μαντά μια και την ακολουθώ από το πρώτο της βιβλίο "Τη μέρα που σε γνώρισα" και προστέθηκε στα αγαπημένα μου μαζί με το Βαλς με 12 θεούς(το πιο αγαπημένο!!),Το σπίτι δίπλα στο ποτάμι,τη Θεανώ,το Έρωτας σαν βροχή....
Παραθέτω και δύο από τα πολλά αποσπάσματα που σημείωσα κατά τη διάρκεια του ...ταξιδιού!!
"...άλλο τα όνειρα ,άλλο η ζωή.Και τα όνειρα που μένουν μόνο στο μυαλό μας και δε γένονται αλήθεια,είναι αυτά που μας κυνηγούν αν τα αφήσουμε!Δεν μπορούμε να χαρούμε αυτό που έχουμε,μόνο σκεφτόμαστε αυτό που χάσαμε!Αν ζούμε στα σύννεφα,αντί για τη γη ,γινόμαστε δυστυχισμένοι!" σελ.232

U skorije vreme nisam procitala bolju knjigu! Prvi put se susrecem sa likom i delom Lena Mande i samo mogu reci da sam preodusevljena! Priča nas vodi kroz živote dve porodice koje ma koliko god htele da im se putevi ne ukrste sudbina je imala drugačije planove… Neočekivani zapleti, u pojedinim momentima jako teški za citanje ali Lena je svojim umećem to sve lepo upakovala i napravila remek delo! 👏👏👏

Μετά από το εγχείρημα της να γράψει ένα αστυνομικού τύπου μυθιστόρημα, επιστρέφει στα γνώριμα για μας λημέρια. Ένα Ερωτικό Ιστορικό Μυθιστόρημα που διαδραματίζεται σε Κωνσταντινούπολη και Αθήνα. Με ιστορικά γεγονότα μεγίστης σημασίας, με ιδιώματα Ελλήνων (προφορά) αλλά και με την μυθοπλασία της καταφέρνει να μας παρασύρει και σε κάποια σημεία να μας δημιουργεί και μια μικρή δόση αγωνίας. Είναι από τα βιβλία που τα διαβάζεις σε μια μέρα, χωρίς να σε κουράζουν.
Χαίρομαι που δεν ήταν ιδιαίτερα εμφανές και έντονο το στοιχείο του ερωτικού τριγώνου. Οι απόψεις και τα πιστεύω της εποχής και οι ίσως "λανθασμένες" απόψεις των κάθε φορά γονέων, που μπορούν να οδηγήσουν στην καταστροφή πολλές ανθρώπινες ζωές, εύχονται συο τέλος να είχαν πράξει ΤΟΤΕ διαφορετικά.

Έχω να πω πως μετά από χρόνια βρίσκω και πάλι ένα αγαπημένο μου βιβλίο της!

Buongiorno care Impertinenti, oggi vi parlo della Lettera d’oro della Manta, autrice che personalmente non conoscevo.
Crisafenia, la protagonista, è una donna di quarant’anni con una vita davvero difficile alle spalle e che ricevuta in eredità una casa dal nonno si trasferisce ad Atene. Lì ritrova delle lettere e, grazie ad esse, inizia piano piano a scoprire la storia della sua famiglia.
Il destino ha giocato un ruolo cruciale e indispensabile... Tre storie, tre epoche diverse e due città. Si parte dai primi del Novecento ad Instabul, fino ad arrivare ad Atene agli inizi degli anni Cinquanta.

Questo libro mi ha colpito perché racconta epoche a me davvero distanti, dove le donne erano sottomesse e fragili, ligie alle regole imposte dai mariti, ma che di fronte alle difficoltà della vita mostrano forza e coraggio.

Tutti i personaggi sono descritti davvero bene, sia fisicamente che psicologicamente.
Mi è piaciuto molto lo stile della Manta, mi ha fatto immergere totalmente nella vicenda e ho vissuto tutti i tormenti dei protagonisti.

Crisafenia è una donna a cui la vita non ha mai sorriso ma che grazie alla scoperta delle sue radici riesce finalmente a risorgere e a capire che anche lei merita felicità. La sua storia mi ha fatto molto riflettere e soffrire allo stesso tempo, perché è un tema molto delicato, ma ancora oggi attuale e che distrugge la vita di chi ne è vittima.

Si parla anche di un tema all’ordine del giorno: l’accoglienza di chi fugge dal proprio Paese a causa di guerra e persecuzione.

Gli accenni alla storia dell’epoche in cui le vicende sono ambientate è stata sicuramente una delle cose che di questo libro ho amato di più, sia perché conoscevo solo una parte di esse, sia perché storia è sempre stata la mia materia preferita a scuola.

Insomma, questa autrice è stata davvero una piacevolissima scoperta e vi consiglio di leggere questo libro perché vi farà immergere in epoche distantissime da noi, vi farà piangere e arrabbiare allo stesso tempo per le vicende dei protagonisti, e vi farà anche sperare che il destino per una volta smetta di metterci lo zampino.

Δοκιμασμένη καλή συνταγή τα βιβλία της κυρίας Μαντά για μένα. Ένα βιβλίο που απόλαυσα πολύ και ταξίδεψα μαζί του. Ήθη, έθιμα, πόλεμος, πόνος, θάνατος, έρωτες μιας άλλης εποχής. Πολλές τραγικές και σκληρές εικόνες ζωντανεύουν μπροστά στα μάτια του αναγνώστη και τον πλημμυρίζουν με πολλά συναισθήματα. Αγάπησα πολύ την γιαγιά Σμαράγδα, θύμωσα αρκετά με την Ρόζα και λυπήθηκα όλα τα αρσενικά «Κουγιουμτζή» γιατί πραγματικά τόσο δειλοί μόνο για λύπηση ήταν! Η Εκάβη όμως...η εγκληματική και κακόψυχη Εκάβη ήθελα να πονέσει, θα ήθελα να τιμωρηθεί και μάλιστα σκληρά. Είχε κάνει φρικτά εγκλήματα και εξαιτίας της τόσοι άνθρωποι πόνεσαν ενώ 2 απο αυτούς πέρασαν μια κόλαση. Όσο σκληρό και αν ακούγετε μια τέτοια και χειρότερη κόλαση θα ήθελα για την Εκάβη! Επίσης θα ήθελα να μάθω τον λόγο που ο Περικλής άλλαξε γνώμη και άφησε γενική του κληρονόμο την Φένια. Αυτοί ειναι και 2 οι λόγοι που πέρνει 4 αστεράκια από μενα και όχι 5!

Three stars, but closer to 4. I really liked The Gold Letter, but there were some things I would've changed.

The Gold Letter focuses on the Kantadaris family and their forbidden love with the Kouyoumdzis clan. (I'm pretty sure I spelled those names wrong and I apologize!) Following three generations of the family, it intertwines with the present-day view of Fenia Kantartzi, who inherited a house and a fortune from a grandfather she never knew.

Personally, I enjoyed this book a lot. The first chapter threw me off a bit, because pacing wise, we dove straight into the home renovations and such. I was a little confused by that, but overall, it wasn't a big deal.

I loved Chrysafenia and Smargada (the original ones, that is) but was less than impressed with the second generations of the names. I felt that Fenia's character was almost too hard to empathize with because her backstory was just so tragic. In a novel plagued with devastation, the cataclysmic events of Fenia's life impacted me less, although terrible situations like her's do occur. Smargada shouldn't have put up with Hecuba's cruelty for so long. After generations of Kantadaris' climbing back from pain, it seemed strange that Smargada took her sister's abuse so willingly.

Other than those points, I truly enjoyed most of the novel, especially in Constantinople.

Set in Turkey and Greece and moving back and forth in time, The Gold Letter tells the intertwined stories of four generations of two Greek families who lived first in Constantinople, then among the upheavals of the mid-20th century settled in Athens. The author does a wonderful job bringing her exquisite settings and eventful time periods to life, though the pace of the book drags at times. The seemingly endless succession of unhappy lovestories involving misogyny, controlling men, spiteful women, hysterics, and domestic as well as in one case sexual abuse was a lot to take, and the first three of those ever-repeating elements got rather tiresome quickly. That said, I'm glad I persevered, because I very much enjoyed the ending it was all building up to - I just wish we could have gotten there a little quicker, and with a little less misogynist bullshit (appropriate to period and culture though it was).

I loved this book! There's three different love stories, and with each one I kept hoping love would win out...and finally it did, but not in the way I expected. It also wove in the story of Greece's conflict with Turkey and I FINALLY understand why the Greeks call Istanbul - Constantinople. I gave up on the last 2-3 books due to the story line failing to keep my interest - but this one ticked all my boxes: historical, love story, and interesting enough that I looked forward to listening it on my walks.

Review:

This a beautiful story about healing, forgiveness and overcoming tragedy. The characters are described vividly and nice good people. The book is captivating and full of intrigue as you follow Fena on her journey to uncover the truth about her family. It also gives you a bit an inside into the history behind the Greek – Turkish conflict, centering on Istanbul during the tumultuous years after the First World War until the mid 1950’s. The book is nicely written, I really enjoyed it and I was sad to finish it. I will keep my eyes open for more books by this writer.

This was the first book that I've read featuring the refugee crisis in Europe and detailing the dvisions between Turk and Greek in Constantinople.
Chrysafenia Karapanos also known as Fenia inherits her late mother's childhood home from her grandfather who kicked her mother out of the house when she was 17. She knows nothing about her mother's family and in the renovating of the house she discovers letters - the oldest almost 90 years old, the others a bit more recent. Together with these letters and her mother's cousin she pieces together the history of a family she didn't know.
Her family's root lay in Constantinople as Greeks living amongst the Turks in a very turbulent time in their history. This is a riveting story spanning over four generations of women from one family who were linked with three generations of Kouyoumdzis men.
It covers a portion of History that was unknown to me but so vividly described that it felt as if I was right there amidst it all. What the Kouyoumdzis family and hundreds of others like them lived through humbled a person and those scenes have not left my thoughts.
A beautiful ending with a far bit left unsaid, but the reader can fill in the blanks for themselves.
It was not always easy to read especially the depiction of the violence of the attacks by the Turks on the Greeks on the streets of Constantinople, but it was a brilliant translation whose words carried all the power and poignancy that the story deserves.

È stata una bellissima sorpresa leggere questa storia che si snoda dai primi del Novecento ai giorni nostri e ci racconta le vicende di due famiglie a cavallo tra Istanbul e Atene.Non conoscevo l’autrice che ha scritto ben quattordici romanzi e ha vinto moltissimi premi, nata proprio a Istanbul e trasferitasi giovanissima ad Atene. Ci narra con perizia e sensibilità la vicenda di una donna, Crisafenia, che arriva ad Atene per prendere possesso di una vecchia casa e di un bel po’ di soldi ereditati da un nonno che non ha mai conosciuto.

E’ una donna con un passato oscuro e un dolore profondo assopito, ma ancora presente nell’animo. Non esita ad accogliere in casa uno sconosciuto, un giovane profugo siriano che, adottato come un cucciolo abbandonato, sarà momentaneamente la famiglia che Fenia non ha più e che con lei è stata crudele e spietata.

Durante alcuni urgenti lavori nel vecchio appartamento emerge una scatola di latta e le lettere in essa contenute, nonché un bellissimo ciondolo, opera di un gioiellere di grande perizia, le spalancheranno le porte sulla storia della sua famiglia e le faranno capire l’origine di tutte le sventure che le sono capitate.

Con grande forza d’animo, la stessa che contraddistinse sua madre e la sua bisnonna, Fenia riannoderà i fili spezzati del suo passato con quelli del suo futuro, raggiungendo la felicità e la stabilità che non ha mai avuto.

Tratteggiato con grande abilità psicologica e storica, il romanzo ci racconta uno spaccato di vita dei greci in Turchia a partire dai primi anni del nuovo secolo, permettendoci di assistere a guerre civili, emigrazioni e vicende realmente accadute. È un libro imperdibile per le amanti dei romanzi storici che coinvolgano famiglie e storie d’amore appassionanti. Lo consiglio vivamente.

This book of missed opportunities and angst rapidly became tedious for me and I almost didn’t finish it. It starts when Fenia inherits her mother’s childhood home. With her cousin and letters discovered in the home, she pieces together her family history and some Greek history. The result is a story of three generations of unfulfilled young love and arranged marriages. Several of the women had the same name, but were from different generations, which sometimes made for confusing reading. Fenia does learn a lot about her family and herself. In the end the information she uncovers about herself helps her to forge forward with a better life for herself.

This historical fiction novel was a plunge into a culture and time-period I am not very knowledgeable about. I enjoyed it, and most of my struggles were with unchangeable aspects of the culture (regarding the overall treatment of women).... It reminds me very much of Little Women, with its fast-paced, matter-of-fact flow, and--maybe more appropriately--100 Years of Solitude, with the repetition of names going through the generations and getting confused at the multiple Smaragdas and Chrysafenias running around.
~I definitely have an issue with the abrupt trail-offs in the style of storytelling. It seemed like the resolution of each drama was much less important than the build-up to it. There would be a whole lengthy chapter (or more) leading up to the climax of whichever generation's story was being told at the time... and then there would be a whirlwind of drama followed by, at most, a quick paragraph summarizing the fallout. I understand that there was other story to get to, because there was just so much going on, but there were definitely parts of the story that could (and should) have been more fleshed out, and characters that were done dirty by the lack of story time.
~My other big issue is something that I've ranted about time and time again in my book reviews... but I'm gonna rant one more time: Why is a childhood of abuse and rape the only way to traumatize a female character and make her a hard, closed-off adult? Aren't there other sorts of trauma? (SPOILER) Fenia, our POV character during the framing narrative, had a truly horrific childhood of watching her mother be continuously beaten and sexually assaulted, regularly lose children to violent miscarriages, and finally commit suicide (or was more likely murdered) before Fenia herself is then sacrificed at the altar of her step (although she doesn't know it at the time and that causes even more trauma) father's cruelty and gaslighting. I understand that this is a real issue in the world, and that it has to be addressed. But in a world of fiction, can't we every once in a while find other ways to give our characters backstory? Can't I read a book where no one gets brutally raped without having to resort to children's literature or so-called "cozy" books with all the personality and style of unbuttered toast? :(
~There's a lot of miscommunication, soap-opera-level villainy, and enough angst to happily find a place in the hurt/no-comfort section of AO3. The main idea of two families continuously being drawn together and ripped apart was really interesting, but the reasons why the lovers couldn't be together just got more and more convoluted with each generation until it reached the soap-opera levels that I mentioned and there just had to be an evil-and-cruel-just-for-the-sake-of-the-plot sister/aunt and mustache-twirling-just-after-the-money husband/father-figure to swoop in and make everyone's lives miserable. Are there people who actually act like Hecuba and Renos in the world? Absolutely. But for Hecuba, especially, there is literally no established reason in the book for her to hate her sister and niece so much. There's a meager attempt at "oh, my mom always loved Smaragda more boo-hoo," but it just comes across as her being a crazy witch for no reason, since it literally started from Smaragda's birth. It struck me as lazy.
~The self-sacrificing "I'm-not-worthy-of-my-lover" trope is starting to really frustrate me (again, outside of fanfiction) and this book, at least at the end, is chock-full of it. (SPOILER) Fenia's angsty romance kind of blows in from out of nowhere at the very end of the story, and we have to abruptly backpedal to fill in all the blanks of it. I honestly would have been okay without her romance plot-- she had enough problems and demons to conquer without having to worry about a dude. It was supposed to highlight her breakthroughs with her own issues, but instead it came across as a man being the only thing that could possibly fulfill her. I would have much preferred her learning to love herself just for herself and that being enough-- instead she has to learn to love herself so she can properly love a man. She was enough on her own... but the way it was told felt like she wasn't and was never going to be fulfilled without the dude whose name I can't even remember.

The more I write and think about it, the more I have to go up and drop my rating because it's just so frustrating to me. I think a lot of these issues that I have may be cultural. This is not my culture and it did have to be translated, so maybe the soap-y plotlines and forced angst that are putting me off are near and dear to Greek storytelling. I dunno.
Like I said, I did overall enjoy it, but I just struggled with how contrived so much of the drama felt-- like it was only there to up the ante and make the story continuously more farcical as Fate kept the two families apart. It's worth the read, but definitely just be prepared for a telanovela.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I was pleasantly surprised by the story. It was quite captivating and the well=developed characters made it seem as if I was part of the story.
