Chaos is his element…until a mortal woman’s touch snares his heart.

Catalina Castillo should be happy in her renovated vineyard house, weaving intricate tapestries. But her nights echo with emptiness — until she hears her name whispered on the wind, and a man steps out from among the vines.

He’s tall, black-haired, a stranger — and then he shifts. He’s the Lord of Chaos, the demon who helped the Castillo clan defeat their arch-enemy. When she offers him shelter, she’s not sure if it’s family honor or her body talking.

After months of being stranded on Earth, Loc has finally found a warlock with the power to send him back to his own world. But the dark New Orleans spellcaster wants something in return. Cat is the key to capturing the prize, but as desire weaves its spell between them, Loc finds himself struggling with something he’s rarely bothered with…a conscience.

With the demon realm calling him home, their attraction can never be more than that. But when the warlock kidnaps Cat, Loc realizes what he stands to lose. If he doesn’t act fast, she won’t need her innate ability to talk to ghosts. Because she’ll be one of them herself….

Demon Born is the fifth novel in the Witches of Canyon Road series, a spin-off from Christine Pope’s bestselling Witches of Cleopatra Hill books. Although characters from previous books in the series appear, this is a standalone paranormal romance.

A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Many reams of dead trees later, she’s happy to announce that her debut novel, Fringe Benefits, was published by Pink Petal Books on April 8, 2010. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the new journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Her paranormal novella, Playing With Fire, was released on August 5, 2010.

While Fringe Benefits is a straight contemporary romance, she writes in a variety of genres, including paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection.

After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor in addition to writing fiction. She lives with her husband and an explosively fluffy Pomeranian mix. Her house is pink, but don’t hold that against her.

This is a review of:

1. Hidden Gifts (2018)
2. Darker Paths (2018)
3. Mysterious Ways (2018)
4. A Canyon Road Christmas (2018)
5. Demon Born (2019)

Not nearly as good as some of her others . . . she writes so well that I always enjoy her style, but these just weren't as good except for the last one, A Demon Born.

The first three listed must be read together. They are basically one longer book. The reason I do not like these three books as well as others of hers was that I just didn't buy some of the facts/situations. Some examples: The author might have been able to convince me, or she might have thought up other reasons that would have supported her situations, but she didn't. Thin.

The Christmas Story was just meh. I mean, it was ok, and a nice, happy piece, maybe in the 3&1/2 to 4 range, but parts seemed so repetitive, and then towards the end, there was like a whole page of internal exposition by the protagonist that was absolutely repeated a few pages later almost verbatim. Snore! Either poor proofreading or trying to stretch? Not sure

Finally, the last one was fun. Well-paced, fun, I just liked it. I think you can skip the others and just read this one if you are like me . . . So many books, so little time.

I've been looking forward to Cat's story, so I was excited to receive an ARC of Demon Born. And it's a doozy! I don't talk about the story in my reviews, because you can see that elsewhere. Christine Pope is really on form with this one, in my opinion; I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the vineyard home and surrounding gardens that Cat has renovated. I felt like I could almost smell the scents in the air. Makes me want to visit. I was also struck by the unexpected twists and turns in the story line; Demon Born went places I really wasn't expecting, and it kept me guessing. Cat's become one of my favourite characters of the series.

There are some characters involved from other books in this series and the Cleopatra Hill series, so I think it would be useful to have read the previous books, but not vital.

I love Pope's writing, and often recommend her work; this is one of the best of any of the dozens I have bought: Well written, plotted and characterised. Double thumbs up!

Want adventure, action, and romance? Well, look no further than Demon Born. This is the fifth book in The Witches of Canyon Road series. I have read many of Christine Pope’s books and read all of this series, so far, this is one of my favorites.

We follow Cat, Rafe’s sister, instead of Rafe and Miranda as we had for the first four books. It was nice to get a change of perspective within the Castillo Clan. While, I enjoyed Rafe and Miranda’s story, I always wanted to know a little more about Cat and her magical abilities. We get a better understanding and insight throughout the story. We see Cat and Loc (Lord of Chaos), get to know one another better, as they travel and work together.

As always, Pope has expanded the Cleopatra Hill/Canyon Road universe. With Cat and Loc, making a brief visit to New Orleans, we get a glimpse of the local clan. I would love to learn a bit more about the NOLA clan but maybe for another book. It was a wonderful read and great way to kick off the New Year. I did receive an ARC.

Catalina (Cat) Castillo’s story in Christine Pope’s “Demon Born” (The Witches of Canyon Road Book 5) was totally ethereal. The Demon, Lord of Chaos (aka “Loc”), who had previously helped the Castillos defeat Simon Escobar kept sensing a need to meet with Cat again. When he appeared to her in his Demon form, Cat was surprised but not afraid. They began a quest to find a way for Loc to return to his home plane. What resulted instead was a relationship and a love affair that neither one could deny. Surprises abound in this fifth book of the series. A dark Warlock with treacherous spells and abysmal witchery along with various ghosts’ scenarios. I found myself drawn in by the twists and turns throughout. Loving this series and the way Christine Pope makes you feel as though you are really there. You can read this book as a standalone, but it'll be so much better to check out the entire series as this is a sustained saga of the Castillo Clan.

No spoilers in this review!!

If I really like a book, I rate it a four. There are not many books that deserve an "It's amazing," rating of 5.

This book was amazing! I love Christine Pope's paranormal books, but Demon Born, in my opinion is the very best of them! It is a masterpiece of suspense and romance with some very unexpected reappearing of characters previously introduced in other books. I was delighted to see Cat use her gifts, not a frequent opportunity, Like Cat's completed tapestry, this story has threads of various textures (clans) woven into her most engaging book. I read it from start to finish in under 24 hours. Like previous reviewers, I look forward to Tony's story. However, Christine you have raised the bar!

This is by far my favorite book in the Witches of Canyon Road series. The relationship development between Loc, (Lord of Chaos) and Catalina Castillo was very well written and seemed realistic. Well, as realistic as a relationship between the lord of another realm/world and a witch hiding in plain site can be. Christine Pope does a good job with character growth both individually and as a couple. The book also had a good mix of previous characters in the series, evil plot line and introducing readers to other witch clans and their territories. I think this is definitely a book where you need to read in series order but it was a very satisfying read. I thank Ms Pope for the opportunity to read an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Looking forward to more in the series.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. Demon Born by Christine Pope is Book 5 in The Witches of Canyon Road series. Here is a spin-off series that defies the stereotype. This amazing spin-off to The Witches of Cleopatra Hill series will make you a devoted Christine Pope fan. This is Cat and Loc's (rhymes with woke) story and a brilliant adventure. I love the way Christine Pope weaves the past and present together in a miasma of strong emotions, magic and love. Start the New Year right and read this series. Each book can be read as stand alone (with small spoilers), but this series deserves to be read in series order for the maximum enjoyment.

Cat is settling into her new home at the former Vineyard. She is happy farming out the vines to someone who has the time and patience for them, but she isn't above learning a thing or two about grapes!

But when the Lord of Chaos, or as he now calls himself Loc, turns up at her home seeking a place of safety whilst he tries to find a witch strong enough to send him back to the demon Plane, her life gets a LOT more complicated.

Twists and turns aplenty with conniving witches, warlocks with an agenda, humans with an unnatural obsession and the usual family squabbles! Great read and Cat and Loc really complement each other. Well crafted story and compelling characters!

I loved Demon Born by Christine Pope!
Note: this review contains spoilers!
Not only was I happy to read Cat’s story when she wasn’t going to become the prima, but Loc’s story was wonderful!
Loc’s character was so well developed, his observations on what earth looks like made me take a second look even if there is a foot of snow out there! The author did an excellent job of helping him decide where he wanted to be and with whom he wanted to be.
And Cat and Edgar pulling all of the ghosts out of the cemetery was awesome! This would make a great movie!
Wonderful chapters, great descriptions, and a great plot make this one of my favorites!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Why can't these bad witches always wanting more power and hurt people 4 no reason just 2 show off that they can if they wanted 2. It was awesome that loc finally realized what he was feeling that, yes it was different cause he never felt it b4 and there must have been something very special to make him feel it and 2 keep it and her safe 4 a really long x.

Enjoyable book

This book was a enjoyable read. We see the relationship development between Cat and Loc, and we are introduced to some interesting characters. One definitely needs to read the previous books in order to have the background on Cat and Loc. overall a good read.

Yeh book was enjoyable, but it lacked movement. I felt a bit stall at times. I hope the next ones better. But still a good read.
