Donald Tyson is a Canadian from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Early in life he was drawn to science by an intense fascination with astronomy, building a telescope by hand when he was eight. He began university seeking a science degree, but became disillusioned with the aridity and futility of a mechanistic view of the universe and shifted his major to English. After graduating with honors he has pursued a writing career.

Now he devotes his life to the attainment of a complete gnosis of the art of magic in theory and practice. His purpose is to formulate an accessible system of personal training composed of East and West, past and present, that will help the individual discover the reason for one's existence and a way to fulfill it.

It's been a number of years since I finished this book, but it's one of my favorites, so I thought I should recommend it to anyone interested in Astral Projection/O.B.E./N.D.E./Lucid Dreaming. My review won't be excellent, but I can at least provide a little nudge toward this book.

Soul Flight by Donald Tyson is, by far, one of the best books on the history of Astral Projection. Tyson provides a great deal of historical information on Astral Projection from the perspective of many different cultures and traditions. The text is a little light on technique, so if you just need a technique book, then there are others that I will recommend. However, even if you are interested in finding book on technique, I still highly recommend this book because it provides invaluable context for this advanced spiritual practice.

In addition to having read a large number of books on Astral Projection, I'm also a long time member of an Astral Projection based forum, with over 3100 posts. Sooo, I kind of know a fair amount of information on the topic. With that said, I believe that it is terribly important to understand the context of Astral Projection and to have an idea of what it really is [whatever that is - no one really knows exactly what projection is, a mental projection, a literal "soul/spirit" journey out of the body, a form of a lucid dream; no one knows...well, depending on who you ask].

Soul Flight gives you a comprehensive history of Out of Body Experiences. It teaches you what the practice is called by different cultures and spiritual traditions [and the names are numerous]. Astral Projection is only a recent occult name for this type of journeying. You get an in depth explanation of the various methods shamans, witches & mages, monks, occultists, spiritualists, etc. used to achieve this altered state [quite a few involve sacred plants and concoctions created from them, other methods are based on mental/psychic practice and exercise].

For anyone interested in Astral Projection, there are a few technique based books that I will soon review. But, I believe this book to be a necessary "appendix" to all other O.B.E. books, as it truly helps you to understand how the practice has evolved from pre-civilized shamans to modern day average people like me or you. Anyone can achieve this wonderfully liberating experience and I feel that everyone ought too; the practice alone is extremely powerful for personal spiritual growth as it requires regular meditative practices and inward journeying. Simply doing the exercises in any Astral Projection book [even if you don't achieve projection right away, which you probably won't, it takes a fair amount of practice to retrain the mind] is psychologically and psychically healing in many ways.

Check back soon for my reviews on some of the better "technique" books, but definitely look into this one if you want to understand what Astral Projection is all about. I guarantee that it will provide the context that you will really need to be successful with Astral Projection.

[Note: I set the date that I finished the book as an arbitrary date in the approximate window of time in which I did read the book. It was most likely 2009 and in the summer, but it could have been the summer of 2008. Not entirely sure. But I felt like I should be honest.]

If you're interested in such things, the "history of astral travel" presented at the beginning of this book is fantastic. Tyson takes us through shamanism, wicca, Theosophy, spiritualism, the Golden Dawn, the UFO phenomenon, and other topics with the focus being on astral travel. I enjoyed it immensely. Tho, I would recommended Lyn Buchanan's description of the men in black over Tyson's, as Buchanan actually encountered these people in real life.

The second half of the book is a "practical manual" for astral travel. Tyson presents dozens of different techniques to produce this state in oneself including the use of water basins, mirrors, plants, tarot cards, runes, breathing patterns, mantras, ect. The interesting thing to me is that he doesn't suggest one method over another. He thinks that since each person is different and will therefore be approaching the art with different mentalities that everyone has to find their own best way. I liked that.

Fascinating read.

Amazing book for those wanting to practice astral projection. Tyson went into great detail regarding the methods to induce projection and the many ways to protect yourself while on the astral plane. It was overall a phenomenal book and I would recommend it to anyone.
