I was born in Spencer and grew up on a farm south of Moneta, Iowa—a town that no longer exists. I graduated from Hartley Iowa High School and moved to Mankato, Minnesota where I worked, married, had a daughter and went to college. I have a bachelor’s degree from Mankato State and a master’s from Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas. In 1982, I returned to Spencer, Iowa to begin working at the public library. In 1987, I was named Director of Spencer Public Library and I served in that position for 25 and ½ years. I retired in 2007 to write this book. I currently reside in Spencer.

I love George Orwell, Frederick Feikema, and the Harry Potter series for fiction. I read all of Torey Hayden’s books about abused children and many other non-fiction writers. I rarely read fiction these days unless it is a truly special book.

This superb sequel to the biography of Dewey the Library Cat has all of Vicki Myron's gift for writing in it - evoking the texture and taste of life in small-town Iowa and the healing this amazing cat brought into the lives of so many people who suffered in so many ways in their lives. You read this and you want to go there and see the place for yourself, meet some of the people, experience the values and local culture, and you agree that a cat is more than merely just another four-legged animal but is, in fact, a Sentient Being. Great stuff!

This was a good read with many touching stories, but it could have been better. I feel like the author interjected so much of her opinion into the stories of others instead of just letting the stories happen that it took away from their meaning. she should have let the stories be told and then commented afterward.

It was like someone telling a conversation and telling you a story to be constantly interrupted. Dewey was a very special soul that many of us find within our pets and animals. I am happy that he could impact so many people during his lifetime. As a fellow Maine coon cat owner, I was drawn to him, and this is still a good read.

Having never read the original Dewey, I would like to go back and read it now. 3 stars for me.

If you liked Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, then you will like this book. If you loved Dewey, you might, or might not, like this book. Dewey was a tear jerker. But folks react differently to tear jerkers. My brother-in-law's wife said she didn't cry in the case of the first book, but did with this one, because in the first [book], "Dewey led a full and happy life, and death is the natural end of that," whereas in the second (book) [this book], "there is genuine tragedy." In most cases, the tragedy is human, not cat, and of course the cats help rescue the humans.

This book is not the story of Dewey, nor his aftermath, but nine stories about nine different people (or families) and how cats helped them, saved them, restored them, and loved them, as well as how and why they were loved back. It's definitely a tear jerker, too, more so in my opinion because there are at least 16 different cases where a good supply of Kleenex is necessary. The last chapter (the ninth) is upbeat; not a real tear-jerker, but I can't tell you why without spoiling it for you.

Please, read this book from front to last. That said, if you are the type that likes to skip around, all nine chapters are stand-alone, and have nothing to do with each other. So, this is a perfect vacation or go to the doctor's office book.

If you don't like cats, and you've read this far ... well, maybe there's hope for you. But read "Dewey" first ... then this book, OK? Just don't forget the Kleenex, not matter how much you think you won't need it.

So why not the top rating? The book was written by Vicki "with" Bret. I guess Vicky can't write well. I don't judge her for that (I can't write at all). But Bret should have done a better job of "editing." I know now, after reading this book, why she needed a co-writer. God bless her. Thank God for Bret, but the book could have been half as long, easier to read, and much better. Vicki complained about having to leave stories out of this book. Well, she should have included more, and wrote half as many words about each. That said, I loved it ... worth a whole box of Kleenex.

I LOVED Vicki Myron's first book, Dewey. I wiped away numerous tears the first time around. This second book however did not do it for me. It seems rather haphazard and carelessly written. Most of the cat stories are not endearing but rather portray crazy behaviors exhibited by some cat owners. I felt sorry for a lot of the cats in the book. One subject even admitted to making up parts of her story. Another discrepancy that I noted was that she states on page 4 that Dewey only liked to sit on someone's right shoulder, but on page 290 (and in the original book) it states only the left shoulder. I could have done without the drawn out introduction to Vicki's new significant other. The best read and written material in my opinion was actually not even done by Vicki but was authored by Kristie Graham about her cat, Marshmallow. That chapter was humorous and delightful to read.

Overall the stories in this volume are good representations of the power of the human and animal bond. However, the narrator drones on at a glacial pace that made me use 1.5x speed for the first time. Hard to listen to.

I did not read the first book before reading this one. Indeed I had no idea there even was a first book. Fortunately it did not matter.

For any person who is owned by cats - this is a must read. Sometimes you think you are alone (or crazy) because your life is consumed by your love of your cats. This book highlights the beautiful stories collected by cat companions across the country that were sent to Vicki, the librarian who found Dewey in a book return slot years ago. Dewey who became a world sensation. These people sent her their stories to let her know how much their animals touched their lives as Dewey had touched hers.

There were parts that rang so true and so deep that I sat at work crying on break. It had me giggling hysterically at some parts. But the best thing is this book made me finally realize not to be ashamed or embarrassed to love an animal with all of your heart. If people do not understand, it is their loss, their emptiness at that lack of understanding.

It brought back such vivid memories of my first cat Princess. How much I still miss her 26 years later. How yes, she was my best friend. How growing up sometimes I had literally nothing - no family that cared, no new clothes, sometimes no food. Nothing except for the love of my cat to pull me through.

After the first book about Dewey, Dewey's mom, Vicki Myron started to hear from all over abuot some other Amazing Cats!

In this book she narrates just nine of the incredible stories she was told and also includes some more details about Dewey that didn't make the first book. Vicki took time to interview everyone involved with these cats to find out just how special these cats were and that like Dewey had a strong perseverance and capacity for love. The stories range from a cat found drowning on Christmas Eve to a Ninja kitty and more.

This is an enjoyable book especially for cat enthusiasts who understand that cats are the bosses and mere humans are their pets.

Each of these stories will touch your hearts or tickle your funny bone, sometimes both.

Each chapter is an entirely new story with Dewey's compassion interwoven seamlessly throughout. The stories are truly inspirational and remarkably different. Any pet lover knows the unconditional love affair between a pet and their human and included in this book of just 9 stories when there could have been hundreds. I don't think this will be the last we will here from these authors or Dewey.

Oh, and if you think you are not a cat lover, stop by any humane society and cuddle with one or two, it could change your life.

Be sure to check out Dewey's webpage

and check out the children's books too.

In 2008 Myron published a book about a library cat that went on to become a bestseller.Since then she's met and heard from thousands of people, all of whom had a connection to her book, and many of whom had a story of their own to share. These are stories about hardworking people whose lives are filled with struggles of various kinds, horrible luck, tanking economies, war, disease, and an awful lot of grinding poverty. But in each of these lives there was something special, a grace note that maybe turned their lives around or maybe just made the awful part a little more bearable: a cat who provided unconditional love.

Should Myron decide to run for president I don't think I'd care what the specifics of her party or platform were. She understands hard work, and that sometimes it doesn't pay. And she understands the vital importance of connection, between people in a community, and between peoples and critters.

Read the book. Your heart might not be warmed because, let's face it, the past six years haven't been great for most of the world, but it will be warmer.

A series of shorter stories of people with their cats. Sweet, interesting, but since each story is only 20-49 pages long, they are less detailed than the first book about Dewey. We don’t get to know the people involved in each tale with the same depth that we got to know Vicki, Dewey, and the community of Spencer, Iowa in her previous outing. So, while the stories here are touching and interesting, I didn’t get a lot out of them. A die-hard cat lover, however, would probably adore them.

I was fully prepared to love this book. I loved the original Dewey book. The problem with this one is that the author got in the way. She put herself in everyone else's story, whether she knew the other person or not. This became extremely annoying. The idea of the book was to share stories of people who were inspired by Dewey's story and how their cats influenced/changed/imporved their lives in similar ways. If that is what we would have gotten, I would have been happy and rated the book higher. Instead, we got the author inserting herself in everyone else's stories. The one that pissed me off the most was the story about the Christmas cat. The cat's owner and the author share the name Vicki (which was pointed out on several occasions... and by the way, this spelling is rather common, not unusual as the author seems to thing it is). Then after a very compelling and interesting story of how the cat was rescued and essentially brought back to life, the author has to go and spend the second half 0f the story telling how she and the cat's owner have so much in common that they are practically the same person... both are single moms, both had abusive relationships, both had brothers who committed suicide... I'm sorry, but taking the other person's grief as your own and making the whole story about yourself instead of the person it is actually about just doesn't work for me. I ended up hate reading from that point on just to finish the book for a reading challenge. I do not recommend this one. Read the original and let this mess go.

This is a wonderful collection of stories inspired by readers of Vicki Myron's other book and is filled with the healing properties that animals can bring to your life. Several of the stories really touched my heart, especially Spooky which tells the tale of a Vietnam vet who is suffering from undiagnosed PTSD and the redemption he finds with a black cat who truly had nine lives. This cat was literally dropped onto the roof of his car one night by a bird of prey and Bill takes the cat to a nearby vet in hopes that the animal can be saved. The cat lives and survives more animal encounters with a bear and a coyote. The most incredible part of the story is how this cat truly helps Bill overcome his own issues by providing unconditional love.

My other favorite is the story of Cookie, another cat who is not supposed to live and the woman who adopts her even though she doesn't have room for another cat. Cookie demands to be taken home from a no kill shelter and quickly establishes herself as ruler of the domain she presides over. No matter what kind of day Lynda has, Cookie is there for her. The stories in this book just make you feel good with warm fuzzies. A few of the stories are a bit sad, but they are also very uplifting at the same time. I can't imagine another book that is more perfect for gift giving to your favorite animal person this holiday season.

I loved Dewey, Vicki's first book, so going in I had pretty high expectations, and I was not disappointed. I'd give this 4.5 stars if it were possible, but I rounded up. It's really good, but the original Dewey book is just unreachable in terms of its impact. But, reading this made me relive all the emotions I felt when reading Dewey. The impact that animals have on our lives is incredible, so much so that it's hard to put into words. There is a kind of emotion that they evoke that Vicki did a really good job of capturing in this book. I really enjoyed the format of having nine individual stories, each one just as moving as the next.
Gonna be vulnerable with y'all, I cried while reading this, and that's saying a lot. Very emotionally loaded (in a good way) book. A great book, even if you don't like cats (which, after you read this, I hope you'd reconsider! Cats, like many animals, are often misunderstood, and their life history and conditions affect them just as ours affect us humans.)

Dewey's Nine Lives was such a good book. It is the story of a small kitten dumped into a library return drop in Winter, he survived and warmed the heart and lives of all the library patrons;never imposing but showing love to those who wanted it. The head librarian took care of Dewey. Dewey changed lives of the homeless who frequented the library and especially the children when they were at the library in the afternoon. He showed so much love to the peple of Spencer Iowa that when people around the world often made a visit to the library just to see Dewey. There are other good Cat Stories in this book. The best one was when the author went to a dance in a near by town with her girl friends and met a man who dances with her. It was instance chemistry. He loved cats just as she did. This relationship was a turning point in his life. They adopted a new cat (Page Turner) who gives and recieves love. Dewey died many years before of old age.

The stories of people and their cats are great. The parts where Vicki Myron draws parallels between her life and the stories of the others in book are not. Cats! I want to hear about the cats, not how you were a single mom.

Favorite: kitten who was dropped by an owl onto the roof of a car and survived.

The follow up to “Dewey”, a big time bestseller, is similar but more wide-ranging, which is not necessarily better. Adding stories of other folk’s cats, the author gives us people who also love cats, along with their backstories, with her own twists to those tales. But taking their word for those animals, she also seems to be happy to anthropomorphize the pets. When I read about the cat who used at least 7 different meows, which each have a different English translation, that seemed to call for tighter editing. But the book is redeemed in the last chapter where she introduces us to her future fiancée, a wonderful story of a man, his history, and of course his feline. As she adds herself to his story, the narrative picks up and delivers a wonderful ending. She is still her own best story.

This book is very heartwarming, and if you love cats, or animals in general, it's a sentimental read. I could have done without the outdated, midwestern mentalities that were more repetitive in this book than the first.

Cute tales from the folks who followed the story of Dewey. Easy to read, this is a great bus book, most especially if you like cats (and libraries). The last story is the best, exactly the format I like, I'll leave it at that, you need to read it yourself if you want to know. Hint: it comes full circle. And with cats!

Every once in a while I enjoy a good "feel good" story. Dewey's Nine Lives gave me that story and Vicki Myron did a great job of pulling together the lives of some fairly ordinary people and making them interesting, thought-provoking and heart-warming. It always amazes me when I see the bond between people and their animals. I have a cat, and while I love him (and sometimes folks, it's HARD to love him), sometimes he can drive me so batty.

I think my favorite kitty story was about Ninja, the karate move cat. My own cat can do so many strange things it cracks me up.

My kitty is Sergei Rachmaninoff. Sergei for short. I rescued Sergei from the pound when he was a mere 3 months old (and the size of a full-grown cat). I picked him up, took one look at his large paws and knew that this kitty was going to be my Rachmaninoff.

Sergei is soft, large, noisy, cuddly, tolerant and kind. He doesn't hesitate to voice his opinion, loves to chase the Boxer Dog (Guinness) around the house. He is a cockroach killer, bat capturer and ball fetcher. He loves dog food (even though I try to keep him away from it) and has eaten everything from scraps to the meatloaf right off my nephews plate.

He can be a pain in the butt, but he's also taught me about how easy it is to fall in love with an animal.

And so, I appreciated this book for what it was- a feel good book that speaks to the heart with stories of the love between animals and their companions.
