A beautifully written love story by Bishop. I really enjoyed reading about Ari and Luca's relationship growing over the course of this novel. They both have pasts that make them wary of each other, but they learn to trust slowly. If you enjoy a slow burn in both relationship and passionate scenes I recommend!

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.

This review was copied from my romance novel review blog: romanticallyinclinedreviews.com

I always get nervous when someone asks me to review their book because I'm wondering what I'll do if it turns out to be... well, not my thing. That was not the case with Afraid to Fall by Sutton Bishop. This book is not written like a debut. It truly seems like the work of a well-seasoned romance author.

Ari is an independent, intelligent, and excitable young woman. From the very first paragraph I was enraptured by her and the past she's running from. She's definitely the heroine that you wish for in every romance novel you pick up. She's not perfect, but she's not daft or annoying like some heroines can be. She's well educated and takes her work very serious, but also isn't afraid to let loose and have some fun (although she's a bit wary about having her fun with guys as of late).

Luca isn't my type of hero--as far as looks go--but his confidence and cockiness, mixed with his gentle and caring attitude, were incredibly attractive to me as a reader. I found myself swooning more than once when his attentions were turned intensely on Ari. He might have been a wee bit know-it-all a couple times, but I guess he did sort of know it all...

The chemistry was insane between Luca and Ari. I can't even begin to describe how hot some of the scenes on these pages got (I was surprised I didn't burst into flames a couple times, honestly). The temperature in Guatemala is hot, but damn if these two didn't make it all the hotter.

Learning about Guatemala and the Maya culture was a total bonus in Afraid to Fall. You can tell that Sutton Bishop really did her research and respected the culture in which she was writing about. I was just as intrigued by the scenes regarding their research as I was by the romantic aspects of the story. Truly a delightful read from start to finish!

It's out November 2, 2018, but you can pre-order today. And if you love romance novel that'll teach you a little something while still being hot as all heck, then you gotta scoop this up ASAP.

Wow! If you want a book that breaks the "mold" of the current romance genre, a book that is full of adventure, suspense, and yes, sexy times, then Afraid to Fall is for you!
I wasn't sure going in what exactly this book would entail. I love trying new-to-me authors and since Sutton Bishop is totally new to the genre, I was excited to see what she wrote. I am so happy that I did! It reminded me of "old school" adventure/romance movies like Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile.
I was enchanted and drawn in to the story from the beginning. The characters are multi-dimensional, the setting lush with amazing descriptions (I could picture everything and almost felt as if I were there), and the storyline well thought-out and executed.
Ariana and Luca provide the heat in a plot that is more about suspense and adventure then the romance. I loved that the steamy parts weren't all that made up the book with a little plot thrown in. Afraid to Fall has a plot with a little romance thrown in. It was definitely about the story which makes my little English Major heart happy! ;-) Not only that, but I actually felt like I learned a little too!

sutton bishop's debut, afraid to fall, takes us to the ruins of ancient maya in guatemala. it's an archeological dig, and ari has joined up after her career and relationship almost imploded. a forensic anthropologist who is interested in mayan culture this expedition is the trip of a lifetime.

or it would be if the crazy sparks she shared with the expedition leader, luca didn't threaten to derail her focus. it's hard to hide their attraction from everyone on the team, and when ari runs into danger, luca knows that he will fight to save her no matter what. he's lost someone once, and he can't lose ari.

part indiana jones, part proof of life, this story will keep you on the edge of your seat while swooning. luca is a super dreamy hero and how he helps ari come into her own and heal is super sexy. and the setting, the way the author takes us to the unknown places of guatemala is really quite special. i loved seeing the mayan influence in the story.

**afraid to fall will publish on november 2, 2018. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of sutton bishop/next steps pr. in exchange for my honest review.

This is a totally new author for me and I must admit I wasn't actually sure what I had signed up for but I like to try new authors and I wasn't disappointed in the least.

This is primarily a adventure story with a ver healthy dash of ramnce thrown in The romance isn't secondary by nay stretch of the imagination but it isn't the primary factor either This is just a real good old fashioned adventure story The writing is so well done that I could almost smell the rotting vegetation and feel the sweat dripping of me.

This is the story of Ariana Antony who is a female anthropologist (Tempe Brennan anyone) there she meets Dr. Luca Fierro. Both have issues in their pasts she has walls so high no man cam ever scale them and he is still hiding in work after a tragic accident in his past but the attraction between them is instant. Will they have any chance at a HEA together when there scientific expedition becomes a life and death struggle of survival

What an amazing story! Afraid to Fall was wrapped in Guatemalan history, culture, and lore. I never realized the complexities of the Mayan history. I felt like I was there (although I have never been and now wish to visit.)
The characters in this story were so heart felt and painstakingly true. I could feel the love, anguish, and anger that the author wrote into each character with such clarity and emotion.
Afraid to fall was fabulously written book and I look forward to more from Sutton Bishop!

This was a great debut novel! It is not your typical romance but that is what makes it so good.

One of my favorite things in books is suspense, the author was able to incorporate that in this novel and it was amazing.

Ari and Luca have pretty hot chemistry! Both have pasts that come out and open their hearts for more. Ari has a cheating ex and Luca has a pretty heartbreaking past. I would love to see a story between Meg and Matt.

Looking forward to Sutton's next book!

I confess . . . the stunning cover of Afraid to Fall made me buy the book. The cover itself tells a story and I was intrigued to find out what that story entailed. Covers can either get me to buy the book or make me pass on it. This engaging cover got me to buy the novel and jump into power reading a really fun adventure.

Jungle heat and romantic sizzle combine in the debut novel by Sutton Bishop. Bishop writes a story in which her main characters have believable backstories. STOP THE PRESSES! The author doesn’t provide any made up angst to manipulate her readers. WOW!! It was refreshing to actually believe the emotional motivations of both Ari and Luca, the main characters. Instead of ‘insta-love’, the author provided me, the reader, with an actual story of two people not looking for a relationship or love, but drawn to each other like moths to a flame. Both Ari and Luca have been burned by past relationships. Ari, especially, is totally not looking or wanting any kind of entanglement. She has put a huge X through relationships. The author doesn’t just give lip service to the character’s emotions; you feel Ari’s visceral reluctance. Bishop writes realistic and smart characters with whom I could experience the story as her writing pulled me into the narrative. I wasn’t just an observer but a participant in the story. I joined Ari and Luca as they experienced the heat of the Guatemalan jungle, made friends, swam in the crystal clear water, and excavated ancient ruins. Both characters personalities resonated as being true to their emotional pasts.

The romance and the relationship bloom in the Guatemalan jungle during an archeological dig to explore the Mayan civilizations. The author sprinkles Mayan lore throughout the book which is fun and fascinating, but the jungles of Guatemala aren’t the safest and she adds some startling adventure twists when extreme danger enters the camp.

I really enjoyed this book because the author provided me both a romance and an actual well-thought-out story. Let me explain how I judge a book. I mentally cut out all the sex and if the book is still interesting, then it’s a good book. So many new romance writers focus solely on sex and they forget to write a story. No one can have as much sex as most romance authors write and still walk the next day. Bishop writes sex with sizzle and heart — it’s more about the passion that hitting all the graphic high points. Bishop is a breath of fresh air in a genre that is losing its passion for romance.

Where do I even begin with this amazing book!!

Seriously, Sutton Bishop has blown me away with Afraid to Fall. And did I mention, it's a debut story too? When I first saw the cover for this book, I stared at it for the longest time. Not only was it gorgeous, but there was something about it that just called out to me. Then, I read the blurb and wondered if it was really a story that I could get into. You see, I'm not much of a history/romance type reader but I was curious. I mean, it sounded good, but I was still on the fence about it. Well, let me just say, I stared at that cover long enough and finally dove into the story. What I discovered was a story unlike anything I've ever read before. It was phenomenal and took me on such an incredible journey.

As I mentioned, I'm not much of a history/romance reader, but having visited Honduras before, I could easily relate to the author's description of Guatemala, the people, and the culture. I literally felt I was right there experiencing everything.

And then there was Ari and Luca. Oh my goodness, those two characters took my breath away. Bishop gave the reader such vivid details about them, what they'd endured, and what they were experiencing. The story was so engaging and so well written, I would've never known it was a debut, an incredible debut at that.

So, if you're looking for an story to take you on an adventure, this is certainly the story for you. The talent that this author has is unbelievable--the most engaging story I've read in a long time. Five stars!!

Amazing jungle trip to love

I rarely give 5 stars for books, but this one gets them. From the first narratives of Mayan mythology to the modern day story, the reader is swept away like on a wild river ride. The descriptions of the primitive jungles, countryside, and charming towns of Guatemala are fascinating and well-written better than most travel magazines, richly evoking the sense of time, culture, and place. Sutton's clever characters are super easy to follow, admire and fall into love with them. Ariana & Luca are fatefully put together with a fun 'meet cute' scene. Although, Ari's hot easy temper is surprising but we soon understand why.
The palpable sexy tension between these two are fun and of course, we want it to ignite and become a wildfire!
Great driven plot, smooth swings and story arcs to keep the reader engaged. It is a 'burning page turner' that I had a difficult time putting aside to sleep! Strong and crisp writing with relevant bits of erudite history or dialogue to make the professional characters realistic.
Well done in blending together the author's life's pursuit and academic interest of anthropology and archeology into a bright star of a novel. I loved it! It's begging the sequel or more jungle archeology adventures.

This book is very well-written with two dynamic protagonists and a plot that only gets better the farther you progress in the book. As an anthropology major I found their expedition to Guatemala extremely fascinating and learned so much about Guatemalan culture. Furthermore, I was immediately drawn to Ari and Luca's romance and couldn't wait to see how the two would end up. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

"He ached to kiss her again. To explore more of her beautiful body. To make her purr."

Wow I'm finding it hard to believe this is a debut novel from Sutton Bishop. I must admit this cover is originally what drew me to this book. And boy am I glad it did! What a beautiful love story it was. If you are looking for a intriguing intense read Affraid to Fall is the book for you. The author blended history and romance for a truly unique reading expirence. I love when authors do their research and it definitely showed in this novel. The details of this book are very descriptive, with a well written plot. I always felt like I was right there with the characters experiencing every little thing with them. Affraid to Fall was interesting and kept my attention from the very first page. I just wanted more and more of this story. It was informative without boring you with historical facts, or technicalities. I absolutely adored Ari and Luca. Guatemala may be scorching hot but the chemistry between these two characters only made it more smoking HOT! Like seriously some of these scenes definitely had me reaching for my ice water! It was a nice unexpected bonus.

"You are light. Bellissima"

Ari is one of those heroines you can't help but love. Her character is one you hope for when you start a book. I was entranced by the demons of her past that she always seemed to be running from. She is by no means perfect but she couldnt have been more perfect for this story. Ari is well educated and takes everything in life very seriously. Sure she could use to let lose and have some fun from time to time, but I can totally understand her hesitation. I loved watching her develop and grow throughout this book.

"Luca emerged from the water and lowered himself next her. God he is gorgeous. And sexy. And probably off limits."

Luca is not my typical alpha, but I found myself falling in loce with his character regardless. I loved that his character was confident, with a air of cockiness. He had this know it all attitude that I loved to hate. It was Luca's gentle an caring attitude though, that left me absolutely melting in swoons many times. When he solely focused his attention on Ari his feelings were intense, and consuming.

*4 STARS*
Well earned for a book that took me way out of my comfort zone and made me LOVE every page of it! I will definitely be reading more books from this author.

This book really puts the readers into the settings and environment of the story. The author was very descriptive about what was happening and what the characters were seeing that now I want a trip to Guatemala. Like I said it is very descriptive which is good because you feel you’re there but it doesn’t drag the story. The chemistry and romance between Ari and Luca was instantaneous yet it took a little while for them to truly act on it. I loved the adventures the author took us on and the twists and turns that you may not see coming. I was intrigued the whole time and couldn’t put it down because I wanted to know what next.

I received this book for an honest review :)

Overall, I really enjoyed this romance book! I will say it was quite addictive and I found myself reading it in any spare moment I had. I ending really had me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed the romance and couple in the book, because they were somewhat of an unconventional couple. They met under unique circumstances, and they are quite far apart in age. I will say I wish I would have known the man's age though. I remember Ari is 28 years old, but it was never stated how old Luca is.

I really enjoyed this novel overall, but there were somethings that I was confused about. Firstly, the ending scene in the airport did not seem necessary. I think that the novel would have wrapped up nicer if they had their conversation in the airport, in the scene before that. I really loved all of the archeological facts and the facts about the Mayan culture, but I will say I was a little confused during the scenes where they talk about the Mayans. Cool and interesting facts are stated, but I think I would have liked to read about more of their origin since I do not really know anything about them to begin with.

The main thing I loved about this book was the romance between Ari and Luca! I felt the sexual tension between them right when they met and I loved it! I will say though I maybe would have loved a bit more steaminess to it, but overall it was great :)

Afraid to Fall is the love child of Indiana Jones and the TV show, Bones, and it's a great debut for a new author.

Ariana Antony is a forensic anthropologist who's signed onto a research expedition in Guatemala, where she meets Dr. Luca Fierro. Their first meeting isn't particularly friendly, but there are some serious sparks generated. Unfortunately, he ends up being her boss of sorts, as he's the one leading the research expedition. As they set about investigating the Mayan culture in Guatemala, the two indulge in their very obvious attraction. But when trouble in the form of Ari's past, comes calling, will Luca be able to rescue her? Or will an ancient curse have its way with them all?

Whew, for a debut, Afraid to Fall is pretty great. I love how the action interweaves seamlessly with the developing relationship between Ari and Luca. It's steamy and not just because it's set in the jungle, it's well-written, and it hooked me from the first page. I've noted that it's marked as the first book in a series - I can't wait to read what's coming next in the Ancient Passages world.

ARC via author for an honest review.

I loved this book ! The characters were well developed and interesting, and the plot took some interesting turns especially at the end with a certain male character that was just too evil! I thought the sex scenes were just the right amount of sizzle to get you going without all the graphic descriptions that can be too in your face. I just really, really enjoyed it. I thought the Mayan folklore was interesting too - the author must have really researched that or has first hand knowledge?

Favorite scene - the panties, luggage scene that comes up a little later too. Just have to read it to find out how this fun, exciting romance comes out in the end.... I felt like I was right there with the characters in the jungle. What happens in the jungle stays in jungle? I'm rooting for the author's continuation of Luca's and Ari's story in a sequel?

I enjoy the Clive Cussler, Tom Clancy type of books that mix a good personal back story with real life settings. I read Afraid to Fall by Sutton Bishop with that in mind and I got that and more since this is a “romance” novel. The author took us into an architectural dig in Guatemala and tied in the personal, suspense and the sexy hot (it is Guatemala after all) stories into one great and enjoyable story. Easy and enjoyable read. I recommend this book and look forward to seeing how Bishop develops her main characters in the future.

BRB booking ticket to Guatemala...

Okay, so this book was onto a winner with me, as for the past year I've been dreaming of going to explore undiscovered temples in Guatemala, so props to the author for enabling me to live that dream vicariously through Ariana. Throw in some danger, some sexy times, romance, adventure... this book has the works, and I'm very interested to see where the next book in the series heads.

Afraid To Fall by Sutton Bishop is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. This novel is an anthropologic romance based in Guatemala, and you got to not only explore the passion between Luca and Ari, but also explore the Maya history and landscapes of Guatemala. This book was so interesting and captivated me from the beauty of Guatemala.

This book was not boring in the slightest. Every chapter has something going on, and the more you get into it, the more interesting things get. I absolutely loved the final quarter of the novel. It had me on the edge of my seat. I was simply taken aback by it. Let me tell you, the final part of this book will surprise you and amaze you.

Ari and Luca were just incredible. Their passion for one another was beautiful and their stories broke my heart, but when together it soared. I just absolutely loved them together. They were perfect for one another, and Luca was absolutely drool-worthy!

For a debut novel, Sutton Bishop did an incredible job. It was intriguing, mesmerising, interesting and dramatic with a flare of angst and passion. Afraid To Fall has me wanting the second novel immediately just to see what will happen next. This book was more than I could have asked for. I have not come across a lot of anthropologic romances, but this will definitely have me keeping an eye out for one!

When I opened this book, I expected a fun, rompy romance, but I got so much more. In her debut novel, Sutton Bishop has penned a story that is as steamy as it is smart and suspenseful. Incorporating her personal knowledge of the region and her background in anthropology, she paints a vibrant picture of the Guatemalan jungle and the Mayan ruins. She also artfully brings her characters to life and gives them a chance to evolve over the course of their summer. I particularly enjoyed the Mayan mythology that she integrates into the story. Tuck into this fun page turner and experience one climactic moment after another!

I love romance books and I've read quite a few of them over the course of the years. I found this book by chance and I am so glad I bought it! Not only is there steamy romance but there's so much characterization, beauty and even history! I felt like I was in the jungle with Luca and Ariana. This book has much more substance than most romance books which made it so hard to put down. I can't wait for book 2!

Interesting

This was an interesting read and a good first effort for fiction work . The knowledge of archeology was obvious from the off, as was the geography.

It was slow to get going, but feed enough tidbits of information to keep you interested.

Overall storyline was a good one, as I have always loved archeology and anything to do with ancient times and cultures, this is an abundance of information regarding Mayans and beliefs.

Mixing characters POV within a chapter can sometimes be confusing, did find myself reading a few parts to confirm.

Enjoyed the mix of characters and of course the fact it was a HEA, some steamy scenes and a few twists throughout so win win.

Just one disappointment....no Epilogue 😢

But looking forward to what’s to come.

Hats off to Author Sutton Bishop on her first novel! Set in the jungles of Guatemala, Afraid to Fall is a steamy tangle of adventure, mystery, and romance that will keep you turning pages well into the night. Sutton Bishop’s first-hand knowledge in archeology and her world travel experiences give her novels substance, and her distinctive characters will have you asking for more!

I wasn't expecting perfection in this first time published work. But truly, I have headless polished books from supposedly professional authors. The story was informative, exciting, and had a great diversity of characters that made for a fun read. I believe this author will only get better!
