Ringgold Wilmer Lardner was an American sports columnist and short story writer best known for his satirical takes on the sports world, marriage, and the theatre.
Editor Maxwell Perkins is credited with saying in the early 1900s that Chicago sports columnist Ring Lardner was the most talented writer he knew. All I have read here is the novel YOU KNOW ME, AL, the correspondence of bush league baseball pitcher Jack Keefe to his sportswriting pal, Al. It is one of the funniest books I have ever read. Jack is as dumb as a post but has the arrogance of an emperor, especially about his pitching prowess. This is a book I keep nearby because I can open it at any page and start laughing all over again. I really must explore some of Lardner's other work some day.
