A bank vault beneath London stores a secret more precious than gold. When ex-soldier and security specialist Ben Drummond receives a late-night phone call from Britain’s National Crime Agency requesting his aid, he finds himself pitched into a deadly six tonnes of gold is missing from one of London’s biggest bullion banks and a guard brutally murdered. How the gold was stolen from one of London’s most secure vaults, deep beneath the River Thames, is a baffling mystery. As Drummond and a high-ranking NCA agent, Alex Fern, begin to sort through the bizarre series of clues left behind, they soon discover that the bank vault beneath London stores a secret more precious than a conspiracy bigger and more dangerous than they could ever have imagined. A secret that people will kill to protect.
The Omega Sanction is a fast-paced mystery thriller with more twists than the London Underground.
Tomas Black was born in the UK and grew up in London's East End. He spent his formative years working in and around the great markets of Billingsgate, Smithfield, Borough and Petticoat Lane. These markets feature in his books. After graduating from the University of Sussex, he found himself in the City of London, writing code to track the inventory of gold bullion for a major bank. He spent the next twenty five years working in the City and other major financial centres around the world as a computer consultant, specialising in the Audit and Security of financial systems. He now travels the world and writes.
This is a different genre to what I’m use to reading. But what a great read. A very fast paced read. Lots of characters that I thought would detract from the story, but it only added to the story. Ben is a solider with a painful past, after serving in the military, he lends himself out as a contractor to NCA (National Crime Agency) he is now a computer forensic investigator. He’s done work for them many times. He hates the label of Army, he’s worked really hard to get rid his habits and rough ages. So he doesn’t think anything is amiss when he gets a call to come in, but an early morning call telling him that it’s urgent .... we’ll that’s another matter ! Alex Fern, the woman he’s working with at the moment is interested in the bank with the missing gold. Organised crime including the Russian mafia use the bank to launder their money. So the laptops Ben is to work on will hold interesting information. We also meet Harriet, she works as an investigator She opens a vault expecting to see gold, what she gets is an empty vault and a bemused assistant manager and client !! Ben now has to find Harriet as she’s missing. Who has her ? And why did she go missing ? Is she in someway involved ? Does it have anything to do with the Russians that are hanging around ? It’s a well written story. All the characters are really believable. We have plenty of background info on Ben, his troubled past, and how he fights his demons and ghosts on a regular basis. It’s an author I’ll be adding to my list.
A great storyline that in the beginning draws you slowly into the life of Ben from the past to present. His workplace being the financial centre of London and linkage to other financial institutions uncovers criminal undertakings involving Russian gangsters which in the course of his investigations reveals treacherous people in government and the security services. The result calls for decisive action to rescue a friend and work colleague with the assistance of people from his past to end the criminal operation and terminate traitors to the country. All in all a great story.
The Omega Sanction is simultaneously thrilling, funny and intellectually stimulating.
In this fantastically well-written modern action novel, formulaic gimmicks are replaced with heart-warming character development and fascinating insights into the underbelly of this world's biggest financial institutions, which Tomas Black clearly knows a lot about.
Reader beware, once you join Ben Drummond on this dark mission, you won't be able to put it down. Bring on book 2!
Phew! At last I can breathe.. What a read! Ben Drummond, what a guy.. Fantastic writing Tomas, kept my on the edge of my seat, lots of twists and turns, and keeping track of who are the good guys (Ben of course) and who are the not so good guys?? Would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy a bit (or a lot)of excitement. Read it in one day!! First time I’ve come across this writer but will certainly look out for more from him..
The author introduces his characters in such a way that makes the reader feel as though they know them, and he continues to elaborate their lives in a way that entices you as the reader into wanting them to succeed and ultimately defeat the criminals who are trying to kill them. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to following this authors work.
I started reading this thinking it was the type of book to carry on an airplane to wile away the hours. Turns out it was so much better than that. Great characters, intense storytelling, and all around entertaining. Note: there were a number of typos and grammar mistakes in the kindle book. Sometimes distracting, and always annoying. I wish writers would pay more attention to such items.
I loved this. Found the author by accident but am so glad I did. The storyline was so great I read it straight though. The characters the action the flow of the words just push you forward toward a great end. Leaves you wanting more. Can’t wait for next book from this author!!
This was a fascinating story about disappearing gold and the effort to trace it and retrieve it. A large cast of characters had interlocking allegiances and betrayals, which made it somewhat difficult to tell the villains apart from the heroes. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more from Tomas Black.
I found it hard to put this book down. A fascinating insight into the world of good bullion, wrapped up in multi national intrigue complete with gun battles.
I was unsure of the book but thought i would give it a try. I'm glad i did it is a good read with plenty of twists and turns. The guy doesn't always get the girl though, makes a change.
Fast paced, compelling thriller. Complex, interesting characters (who doesn’t like Alice? Hell, I want to BE Alice!) Well crafted plot that sucks you in to a world of espionage, financial shenanigans, and jellied eels. A cracking read!
Well written with a good attention to detail, storyline has you looking to finish another chapter before you put the book down. Liked the characters and a nice little twist in the tail.
A great page turner with a number of threads that are gradually exposed. Lots of intrigue, good action and enough suspense to keep the reader engrossed.
