After an interstellar war that lasted for over a century, the Astraethean Galaxy is in ruins. Their Queen, nineteen-year-old Selene Fae, has been left to pick up the pieces. Her parents had ended the bloodshed, but with their deaths came the shattering of their universal alliance, the only thing preventing another war.
Calysta Riyara is a rebel who doesn't follow protocol, consequences be damned. A legendary warrior from Siatera, all Caly wants is to be free. But with her father grooming her to take his place as the Commander of her homeworld's army, freedom is not within her reach. Her only taste of a life without war comes from visiting her Queen.
When a new enemy threatens to invade their galaxy, Caly and Selene soon find themselves on the same side of a new war.
The Humans of Earth will fight for a place to call home. After 200 years on a spaceship, they've set their sights on Astraethea.
I give this book 5 stars because it definitely deserves it! I love that every time I picked up this book, it was like being transported to an entirely different universe. I instantly fell in love with the characters from the beginning. It damn near broke my heart in the ending! The book is well paced but can definitely use some revision due to the number of typos. That doesn’t affect my views though. Really good start to this story! I can’t wait for the next addition to the series!
I'm super picky when it comes to space opera-styled sci-fi. Generally speaking, Star Wars is pretty much the only time I fall in love with it.
But this book was incredible. From the character dynamics to the political structure, and to the world and beings themselves, Astraethea was everything I wanted in a space opera and more. I loved the sapphic element; it was natural, comfortable, and explored the ins and outs that come with any healthy relationship. Calysta was definitely a favourite in this book, as she seemed such a solid balance of snarky, mischievous, intelligent, stubborn, loyal, and compassionate.
None of the characters were flat, each fit snuggly into the plot and alongside one another, and because of this, their anger, joy and sorrow were all easily felt. That ending, especially. My gods, that ripped my heart out.
I definitely recommend this book, and hope that the sequel will also find its way into the world someday--because if/when it does, I need to see what happens next.
It’s rare that I read a book about lesbians, and even rarer that I pick up a sci fi about them, but Skye Yvonne does and amazing job of building up the world and taking you in. Caly, Atreo, Selene... we all fall in love with the characters they become. Just, be prepared for a wild ride. Happiness, tears and chicks with sarcasm locked and loaded. I can’t wait for the next book!
This is an interesting start of a series. I am interested to see where it goes. However, the ending was a little too bleak. So I am not sure how they can do anything but surrender to a vastly superior enemy.
Also needs a bit of world building. Valor should’ve made a different choice at the ending and should’ve shot Zaegan instead.
Definitely one to read if you are looking for some action and aliens. The characters were well developed and likeable (even some of the bad guys). Hopefully there is another installment as the ending kind of just stops halfway through what could easily be a saga. Give it a try you won't be dissapointed.
