A powerful story

I wasn’t sure how I felt when I first started reading this. I know that it’s based on a real life situation so I do hope it ended well for everyone involved. I was in more than one abusive relationship. I got out and after years I’m finally doing well. My daughter and unborn granddaughter didn’t make it out. I’m sure this was a hard story to write but thank you for writing it. Maybe if more stories get told, rather than lost in the past, it will help other women see the signs sooner. May all victims make to the other side of recovery and live a happy future.

Heartbreaking

This story is full of sorrow and pain. It reads almost like a fly on the wall documentary. You're cast into Ebony's life and are pulled along for the ride. You can't help but feel for her. She seems to have every happiness and opportunity taken away from her, even when you're led to believe she's found it.
Ebony's story starts in an abusive relationship that tears at the very fabric of her soul. You can't help but pray she'll leave, or make him go because you honestly can't understand how she can stay but you're left with no illusions about the power he possesses over her. I liked the way the characters were written because it was very realistic. Women are often portrayed a weak and pathetic by staying by their man who hurts them, but this book shows the other parts with blinding clarity. The empathy that's used against them and the fight they put in to gain some ground every now and then, that you think why? It's just going to cause more upset, but it's at those points it reveals the stronger side, the parts that beg to be unleashed and only appear when threatened. Just as life begins to settle down and you think you can breathe a sigh of relief, Ebony's life is thrown into turmoil once again and honestly I've no idea how she copes. Mental illness plays a huge part towards the end of the story and it's almost unbelievable, the switch is dramatic and drastic and once again Ebony is forced to fight for what she wants. Her love for her children is constant, and unyielding but the men in her life cause her nothing but worry, pain and anxiety, it's a wonder she can ever feel comfortable around one ever again, but she also has the patience of a Saint and through great self control, empathy and care she seems to finally reach the place she always wanted to be at by the end of the book. I think this book would suit anyone wanting to find out more about domestic abuse and its effects. It's also plants the seeds of thought about how far you'd go to help someone you love?
