The Townsends #2.5

A Lady's Desire

Rate this book
Lady Sarah Lark has never had much interest in any of the suitors that surround her. She’s decided that, instead of choosing a husband, she’ll save her pin money and travel like she’s always wanted to. However, her plans are interrupted when her family invites her cousin’s widow, Winifred Wakefield, to stay with them.

Winifred and Sarah used to be best friends, but after Win married Sarah’s cousin and moved to London, their friendship fell apart. Neither Win nor Sarah are happy about being underneath the same roof, but after settling her late husband’s debts and being left with almost nothing, Win doesn’t have much choice other than to play nicely with the Lark family.

Though the memories of their friendship hurt them both, they’re too strong to ignore, and the more time they spend in each other’s company, the more they wonder if friendship is all they feel. Still, even if they admit their feelings, to each other and to themselves, Lady Sarah’s parents are determined to see both young women married to suitable gentlemen. Win and Sarah’s newfound love might be over before it even begins.

A sweet and moderately hot f/f historical novella which takes on the difficulty of two gently bred women making a life together in a world that expects them to marry. The characters are lovely and the writing fluent; the historical detail and atmosphere is a bit shonky at points but f/f historical is a rare thing so hey.

4.5 stars.

One of the best historical romance novellas that I have read. Its predecessor, The Rogue's Conquest, put me on reading Cloud Nine, but A Lady's Desire flew me to the moon.

I may or may not be a little bit biased because stories of unrealized love are my catnip. But the longing? Friends, it hurt so good. The pain and jealousy and regret were perfectly tempered by the passion and tenderness and hope. Amid the mending of bruised hearts and a broken friendship, Sarah and Win fought to begin again, to live freely, to love fully.

Did I want more? Duh. Greedy is as greedy does. But A Lady's Desire was a pretty close to perfect offering that satisfied my desires, and I highly and heartily recommend it.

A Lady’s Desire was a pleasant little historical romp set in Regency times. Lily Maxton usually writes m/f and this was her f/f spin-off adventure. Good times, as historical lesfic is still too rare these days.

Lady Sarah Lark and Winifred Wakefield were the closest of friends and thought they would always be together until Winifred - the less affluent one – is married off. There was little else to do for women in those days, but Sarah is still heartbroken because Winifred was her bright flame. Winifred moves to London, they grow apart. Life goes on. Everything changes, however, when recently widowed Winifred is taken in by the Larks. Sarah is adamant that what she once felt for her best friend is gone for good. Winifred is going to prove her wrong.

We already know what Sarah felt for Winifred was more than friendship, but in those days it was much harder to put a name to certain feelings. There are flashback chapters that tell us about how they met and what happens next. There is ample time slotted in for bedchamber antics. A fun little read.

This is a novela of a book series that i haven't read but this one is already really good as a standalone and one that packs many action into just 80 or so pages. This book tackles about a broken friendship and the eventual reconciliation of this and the improvement of this to (ultimately become a romantic relationship).

Lady Susan & Winnifred's chemistry is soooooo cute & supportive 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰. Both of them have their backs on each other and them being past friends that are now having a second chance and transforming into something bigger and more important just emphasizes their relationship dynamic way better. It is also written in a historical settings so....... It reads like a classic book! So you can expect that there are many lovely & complex stylistic choices when it comes to the writing style and the vocabulary used.

Everyone expected them to marry a man...... But like they did a big WHAT IF and just basically married each other 😭😭😭

Are you surprised I'm reading a historical romance? No? Well I am. I normally avoid these types of books because of the way women were treated back in the olden days. However, this little nugget of Victorian sapphic delight had me turning the pages as fast as I could. And all because of Lady Sarah Lark.

This headstrong woman and her love for Win had me swooning away during a certain scene involving a bathtub. I'm pretty sure every window and mirror fogged up during that scene. Having said that, it's not the reason(s) why I would recommend reading this.

This novella is all about getting another chance to be with the one person who has always held your heart captive. It's about defying rules and expectations set by an unjust patriarchal society and still hoping for a happy ending despite it all.

This may not be the most historically accurate book to depict a relationship between two women in that era. But who cares when the message of holding onto hope and love is such an endearing one?

Personal note:
Leave it up to Farah to find the only F/F book among the many other M/F and M/M books by this author. Thank you, you beautiful weirdo :)

A feel good historical novella set in the early 1800s that is well written and nicely done.

Two former childhood friends meet again as adults, finally letting their true feelings show for one another. Can they make it work when a world is against them?

There is a good balance of the sensual, innocence, and spice in this read. Many passages were beautifully written and I really enjoyed it. I also liked that one of the characters was atypical, being on the plumper side. (The cover doesn't match).

Definitely recommend.

This was a sweet, quick Regency romance. This is a novella in a series by Maxton and is easily read on it's own. I was surprised at how emotional it got with it being so short. There's a little mutual pining and some angst from one of the mc's having to get married in the past. I recommend if you're a fan of regency romances and want something quick.

rep: lesbian mc, bi or pan mc, f/f romance

- I wish I wasn't in the worst review slump so I could write a proper one and help get this out there
- I'm notorious for hating the way historical romances are written but this was so easy for me to read (maybe because it wasn't so "women are oppressed!!!!!! WOMEN ARE OPPRESSED!!!!!!" and just in your face with all the historical references/lingo?)
- There was literally no homophobia and the only disapproval about their relationship was the fact that Win relied on marriage to earn money
- Their romance was so sweet and adorable!!! It's best friends to lovers with a hint of second chance and the TENSION between them when Win returns from London was TOO MUCH TO HANDLE. There's also a slight love triangle because Sarah's in love with a married woman but it's not what you think and is explained later
- It was just so sweet and lyrical and I loved the reading experience. I don't have other historical romances to compare, but I'd definitely recommend!!!

A Lovely Little Morsel

Lady Sarah Lark has never had much interest in any of the suitors that surround her, she’s determined to persuade her father to allow her to travel as she has always desired to do. However, when her best-friend now widowed - Winifred (Win) Wakefield, returns, her focus shifts somewhat and long buried feelings, never truly acknowledged by either side, refuse to stay buried.

After Win married Sarah’s cousin and moved to London, their friendship fell apart, the letters they sent to each other reinforcing the cool distance that had developed between them. Neither Win nor Sarah are happy about being underneath the same roof, at least initially, but finally the true connection they feel, is given room to be released and acted upon. Now they just need to deal with Sarah’s parents desires for both women to marry.

When it came to Win and Sarah’s initial attractions, I wasn’t sure how things would pan out and if I would be happy, my misgiving were for nothing and I found myself engaged with the tale and characters.

This may have been a very short novella and it’s not a book enmeshed in the period it is framed within, but the author was able to include a lovely layer of emotion between the main characters, the emotional connection as well as the attraction between Win and Sarah were clear and nothing felt rushed.

A big thanks to Farah for sending this my way!

This is staying in my re-read pile.

I really don't think I'll be able to explain why this story evoked such a deep, wide range of emotions. The characters, their story, their determination to live their lives in peace, their incredible strength and their pride. It was their unwillingness to allow others to break them, their ability to find happiness in the smallest things. But most importantly, it was what they found in each other; someone to share with. To share the work, the heartache, the joy, the secrets they'd kept buried for so long, someone to make being alone seem less lonely. And they saw in each other what no one else could see. Kindness. Honor. Generosity of spirit. And most importantly, through all the adversity, all the heartbreak and trials, they found in each other a happily ever after for the ages.

The bottom line - Sarah and Win captured my heart, and when their story broke into a million pieces, they were there to put it back together again. The writing isn't flawless, but it's all of the things I mentioned, the sorrow, the joy, the sacrifice, determination and devotion, all of these things combined have made A Lady's Desire, one of my favorite historical stories ever. Sarah and Win have more than earned their place of honor on my still unnamed couples' shelf. If you love stories whose characters touch your heart, who pull you in and don’t let go… if you want their trials and triumphs to really mean something, then you’ll want to get your hands on this book as quickly as possible.

On my play book app, this is 95 pages so Ms.Maxton, perfected the saying A Little Goes A Long Way. Thank you for this 5⅚
beauty:)

To those who are still on the fence about reading historical romance, do get off the fence and try it. I've read a couple of Lesfic Historical Romance this year and I am impressed with all of them. I guess the nickname favorite fossil given by the younger generation has its advantages.

This is part of a series, but I haven't read the others and didn't feel the lack. So I can say it stands pretty well on its own.

I needed something short and light and different (because I was in a mood) when this crossed my radar. And I'm glad I took it up. Both the setting and relationship are fairly constrained in time and place (though with some flashbacks) so the length was just about right and the relationship was very well done. Maxton did an outstanding job with both main characters and the secondary characters were well-developed, as well.

Maxton did a fair job with the period, too, and that was a pleasant surprise. The difficulties of a lesbian romance in the Regency era wasn't downplayed at all, but it wasn't played for pathos, either. Okay, it's not entirely "period" as they tended to think of their attraction in modern terms with phrases like "natural" and "right" used in ways that were very much out of place. But that's not a surprise, or shouldn't be, as it'd be hard to convey period attitudes (even when self-applied) in ways that modern readers wouldn't find jarring.

The plot was a bit too facile and the flashbacks a little too awkward to give this a full five stars. But it's a strong four-star showing and I'm glad I picked it up.

A note about Steamy: There's a single explicit sex scene putting this in the middle of my steam tolerance (because the story is so short). It fit very well into the characters and was very well-done, I think.

Ohhh I really liked this! The second chance romance was cute and hot. I also absolutely LOVE science ladies in my historical fiction and this novella definitely delivered on that front too!

I normally don't read a lot of historical romance because I find it a bit hard to read sometimes, but this one was really easy. A little too easy, and the dialogue especially felt wayyy too modern and I almost didn't feel like this was historical at all. This was the only flaw though and not necessarily something that annoyed me since it meant I could finish it really quickly.

Highly recommend it you're into light and easy to read historical romances (or just ladies loving ladies)

A Lady's Desire's biggest problem is that I wanted MORE.

I really like Lily Maxton, who takes real chances and thinks out side the box with her historical romance. I admire that in her, and I was SUPER excited to read her F/F offering.

I'll admit that F/F is the QUILTBAG genre that I struggle with the most. I have a really hard time finding non-contemporary romances in the lesfic arena (I'm not a contemp fan), so my history with lesfic is checkered at best.

However, Lily Maxton delivered with a sweet, erotic F/F short that needed to be 100 pages longer to be truly great.

I loved, loved, loved the heat that this author brought to the story. I could have used even more sexual tension and build-up, but the love scenes were spot on.

Still, I felt like the two went from vague animocity after all those years to saying "I love you" too quickly. I needed about 50-100 more pages to build the complexity and background to the story. Even with some minor flaws, I was very pleased with this one.

I was recently made aware of the Sapphic September readathon. I figured it was as good excuse as any to help choose my monthly TBR. This was a short Regency-era novella that I've had on my Kindle for ages. It's a sweet friends-to-lovers romance where one married a man, became a widow, and then the friends reconnect. It had a nice pinch of spice. Nothing new or worthy of going out of your way for, but still a lovely and pleasant diversion.

"It's like I knew I loved you and it's started when we were younger"
My first of this premise and I wasn't dissapointed maybe because there wasn't alot of history clouded with war and descriptions of that era just a mention how things were, what was expected of women and am happy that Sarah broke the mould and the Earl love her daughter enough to come around.
I love Sarah and Win connection, it's like it was always there, when the MCs connect the chemistry is just flawless.
This was short, precise and our characters knew what they want and fought for it and am here for that.

"I keep telling myself that we're not—not like we used to be," she said quietly. Win's chest pinched suddenly. "But then you'll say something that makes me want to laugh, and it's like nothing has changed between us, even after all this time."
Sweet, adorable f/f romance novella about a rekindled friendship that turns out to be something more and struggling against society that wants them to marry. One of the things I like about queer historical romance is people finding happiness in love against monumental odds, plus the whole "rekindled frienship" aspect...❤ Recommended to anyone looking for something short and sweet.

Damn, I need to find more f/f.

There's a f/f novella in this series???? HOW DID I NOT KNOW????

Ok. Deep breath…

This was really lovely! A bit short (the declaration of love came a bit suddenly, but given that they'd known each other all their lives, it worked for me), but a nice story about two best friends who lost touch after one of them got married and try get to know each other again now that one of them is a widow. I liked Lady Sarah in the previous story in the series, and it was nice to see her get her own story. She is such a lovely person, and seeing her stand up for herself and what she wants was a joy.

A relatively short Regency novella, with a f/f match that’s a spin-off from an existing m/f series. It’s lovely to see more entries into the f/f Regency field. (Pro tip: there are other ways to make your Regency heroine stand out as non-conforming than to give her scientific interests. I mean, I’m all about the geek girls but it feels like it’s being treated as obligatory.) The story is well-written with engaging characters, though either it was relying on the reader being familiar with the prior books, or it was trying to stuff too many side characters into too few words, because I felt like we were getting the synopsis of several novels’ worth of plot. If, like me, you’re pining for more f/f romances in traditionally popular historic settings, this will be a treat.

She wasn’t alone in this wanting. Finally, she wasn’t alone.

Historical lesbian romance is my forever catnip, and this little novella made me so very happy. Really sweet, friends to lovers, overcoming the distance and mild enmity that's born of spending years apart. I should add that there was almost no plot to speak of, and it's part of a series (though I haven't read any of the other books and there was nothing to hinder my understanding or enjoyment). I was drawn in by the lovely cover and got what I was looking for: adorable, hopeful romance.

Pleasant enough story of two very best friends reunited after ten years. I enjoyed the building of the characters and the basic plotline in the beginning. The romance and sex happened rather suddenly and for some reason I was disappointed. In this time of Scotland during the Napoleanic wars, I would've expected more timidity and more language which sounded Scottish. This story could have happened anywhere. All in all a happy, pleasant read though and sometimes a happy read is what is needed. 3-4 stars. I couldn't decide.
