Explore the Captivating History of the VikingsFree History BONUS Inside! The predominant modern image of the mighty Viking warriors has become that of the warmonger and marauding berserker. In popular culture, the Norsemen, portrayed as giant, sword-wielding men with flowing hair and bushy beards, have been reduced to a one-dimensional tribe of ruthless warriors, who cared little for the communities they attacked and plundered. Men like Ragnar Lothbrok, Eric Bloodaxe, Ivar the Boneless and Bjorn Ironside are portrayed as preying on unsuspecting communities and spreading fear across Europe as they laid waste to all that lay before them, taking what they wanted at the point of a sword. It is true that the Vikings were, without a doubt, brutal men living in a brutal age. They did use their skills as warriors to relentlessly attack Europe and the British Isles to increase their wealth and territory, but that is not all the Vikings were, and their contribution to world history is far more than warmongering. Really broad overview and weirdly written. If it didn't have a note from the author at the end asking for an Amazon review, I'd swear that each chapter was written by a different person that had no interaction with the other authors, as certain facts and connections were reiterated multiple times. As far as the term "captivating" is concerned, I'd say that is a bit of a stretch. There is not enough detail or variety in writing in this brief book to really make that claim. I think the author described the Vikings as "brutal" and "ruthless" about 100 times in 100 pages. He may need to consult a thesaurus.
Also, he cited Wikipedia as a source. Wikipedia, y'all!
This was... okay. Realistically, there’s only so much information you can gather in 100 pages. I’m at least pleased that the sources in this book were listed, though most of this information was taken from sites like Wikipedia and the like. Granted, Wiki is gradually becoming peer-reviewed, but it’s still semi-unreliable, which makes the other sites potentially untrustworthy as well. They did, however, list a few books and articles that I intend to look up and cross-reference.
There was also a discrepancy I found with Ragnar’s sons. The author only listed 3 sons (Ivar, Bjorn, and Sigurd) when I have read several sources that indicate Ragnar having far more than just three.
I intend to investigate deeper into other texts and find the answers I need. Time to nerd the fuck out!
At the time of reading this entry in Captivating History, I am halfway through Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories series (which is amazing!). As much as I love Cornwell's work, the story of the Vikings really does not need any fictional spicing up. The history of the Vikings is fascinating as is, and as usual, Captivating History tells the story in a concise and engaging way!
A well researched verbal history of a peaceful, violent culture with no written history, ALL information had to come from the narrative of the poets, also called Skalds. I found this book riveting! A must read for anyone interested in history.
I am so enjoying these brief history lessons by Captivating History. The Vikings did more than wreak havoc and steal other country's lands; they were also explorers, farmers, and settlers. Some more in depth understanding of the most well known Vikings like Leif Eriksson and Eric the Red. It is nice to know there was a real Ragnar Lothbrok as I am a huge fan of the TV show!
A must read for people that want to know more history. I am seriously considering reading everything by Captivating History since the books are brief and concise.
I really enjoyed reading about the Viking history. It's well written, and I have been even more captivated about the Viking age than I was previously. If your interested in virus at all, I recommend this book.
Intriguing, short yet well rounded history of the Vikings and their discoveries. Important persons are well covered. Excellent for a quick understanding.
This was an interesting read. I love the Viking history. Some of the characters this book talks about are staples of Viking lore. It is a shame there was not more documented history for this time period.
kindle unlimited, been sick so behind a bit on reviews, doing the Captivating History ones all in a row
