The abduction of Hank’s two-year-old sister, Emeline, in 1952, shatters his young life and set him on a single-minded path. Twenty years later, Detective Hank Yates specializes in Missing Persons and stubbornly pursues each case. When the disappearance of Marisa Sawyer is brought to his attention, the details are eerily reminiscent.Obsessed with discovering Marisa’s fate, and haunted at every step by memories of his sister, Hank’s investigation leads to twists and turns he could not have foreseen – events that force his life to veer from its course where past, present, and future collide.
Missing: Never Forgotten is an intense mystery by author Leila Kirkconnell. In 1952, someone took Emilene Yates from her family home. Emilene’s family would never give up the search for the missing girl. Her brother Hank, stunned by Emilene’s disappearance, goes on to become a police detective. Hank, working in the Missing Persons department, never gets over the disappearance of his sister. When another case, the abduction of another child, Marisa Sawyer, comes across his desk, the two cases parallel with each other in many ways. Hank dedicates himself to finding Marisa, the point of it becoming a lifelong obsession. With the aging Hank’s health failing, he fears he may never solve the case of Marisa’s abduction or learn the truth of Emilene’s disappearance. Will Hank, with the help of his former partner and loving wife, solve the crime before his time is up?
Missing: Never Forgotten has a large cast of characters who all seem to play an important role in the story's outcome. I liked how author Leila Kirkconnell portrayed several of the characters as both good and bad. After all, no one is perfect and while on the surface they may have good reason to act the way they do, they sometimes go about it the wrong way. Kirkconnell, climbing inside the heads of her characters, made me sympathetic to their cause if not their actions. The plot started quickly and just when you think you know what is coming next, she added a twist to make you rethink what you thought you knew. This is an enjoyable contemporary fiction that I highly recommend.
Good book. I think Kirkonnell has really improved in her writing up to this point. I felt like I was in the story with the characters, walking down the same path with the twists and turns of the characters. This book felt real, and was a good mystery that kept me riveted. It is not long, so it is a quick, entertaining read. I would definately recommended for those into murder/mystery.
