When Cassandra Knight comes out of stasis for her month-long shift as one of FarTech's long-haul deep space pilots, she's supposed to be met by a friendly face. The pilot who woke her is already in her own stasis pod, leaving Cassie to normalize and get back to work on her own.
On another shift, that would piss her off and she'd get over it. This time, the noises coming from the confines of the ship and the problems left for her to clean up soon have her suspicious of another presence on board.
I really enjoyed this short story. "So why only a three?" You may be asking. Well, while I found the story enjoyable, it also played out exactly like I predicted. The main character we follow was leaning a bit TOO heavily on the "I'm going to ignore everything" cliche, being fully absorbed in her personal thoughts and biases. She's either really bad at her job, or bad for the sake of the story, and it feels more like the latter. About halfway through I had guessed what was going on and how it was going to play out, and it pretty much worked out that way.
That being said, this feels like it could be the intro/prologue to a very interesting novel. Without sharing too many spoilers, I would love to read more about this ship and its continued adventure(s) in a longer format. There is an interesting setup here that could be mined further.
Read this book! It's a great short story, but I shouldn't have read it while I was actually alone (my mind started playing tricks on me!) I did not expect the twist ending!!!
