You scratch my back… Jill Gooder is between a rock and a hard place. A close ally needs her help, but to come to her assistance may have grave consequences for Jill. …and I’ll eat custard creams.
Well, we got back to CASS in this episode, so some of my disappointment in a couple of recent books was assuaged. Still liking the ingenuity of the mystery solving and the neverending parade of quirky (I'm being polite) neighbors.
This was an excellent book and I would highly recommend this book to any one who wants an excellent read.I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
Dealing with several cases at once, a sick cat, clown school and more weird events in Candlefield.
First is a missing person case, followed by a few surprises. Several big things are happening some at CASS and some at Washbridge.
The flower fairies, a zoo and Daze all need help and Jill's feet don't touch the ground. Add to the mix a murder and other discoveries in Washbridge make for a busy non stop story. Of course Winky too.
Even though a great deal is happening, the author manages to move seamlessly through the events. It has some great wit and fantastic storytelling. I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next instalment.
Right from the top, I have to admit that this was something of an odd choice for me. Not the book itself as such, just the fact that I chose to read book #29 in a series before reading any others! The reasoning behind the purchase is lost on me now, but none-the-less, I ploughed on regardless. And to be honest, despite there being a few references and ongoing subplots I struggled with, the book itself was a refreshing summer read.
Jill Maxwell is not only a private investigator earning a good living in rural England, but she is also a witch, something that the majority of her clients know nothing about. Her cases are an interesting mix covering both worlds. She is simultaneously searching for a missing canal boat owner and investigating the mysteriously vanishing water in the fairy reservoirs. It is all in day's work for this particular sleuth.
I found the style of writing very easy to read and the gentle humour made it a particular pleasure. In a typical PI style, the story is told in the first person and is very dialogue-driven. Ms Maxwell does not go in for long-winded descriptions or soliloquise. The writing is concise and well-paced. I particularly liked the way the mundane and magic worlds were interwoven.
All I need to do now is go back 28 books and see where it all began...
Entertaining Paranormal cozy mystery/urban fantasy series
This is an entertaining urban fantasy/supernatural cozy mystery series. A fun cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Jill Maxwell formally Jill Gooder who recently got married to her husband a police officer. Is a witch who is a private investigator. She also happens to straddle both worlds. The human world as well as the supernatural world. She does private eye work for the humans in the town she lives in and the nearby towns. When needed she goes back to a supernatural town where most of the supernatural live. She does private investigator work there as well. Well some supernatural live in the human world only supernatural is live in the supernatural towns. A very entertaining series with an eclectic bunch of characters that will keep you guessing from mystery to mystery. Usually there is more than one mystery at a time going on in each book. Check it out
The Elite Competition is coming up and Jill's grandmother gives her her marching orders. There's a dragon, a missing woman, interviews, someone moves out, a beautiful baby contest which will involve Amber and Pearl (which means they'll be problems and jealously), the opening of a clown school (and Jill is afraid of clowns), a dating agency and a major problem for fairies.
Mrs. V has a new knitting task, a murder, a witch organization and various other things for Jill to be involved with.
Another busy and pretty decent addition to the series.
Because this series had been more than slightly predictable, I was reluctant to continue reading. However, this installment brought an underlying plot element more forward, rekindling my interest. Machinations with Grandma continue, as does the ongoing rivalry of the twins (bored), but the new employee at the creche and developments at both WOW and CASS may hold future interests as .
This is a pretty fun episode in the life of Jill Maxwell. There is the clown school next door to her office and her decision to hire an office manager. And what do wooly massives and fields of flowers have in common? Then there is her missing person case and her meeting with the new headmaster of CASS. Jill is kept busy and I was kept entertained. A good combination!
As if a drought, a baby contest, disappearing witches or a new evil CASS headmaster arrives, there are new neighbors, her nephew wanting her to give a talk at his school or Grandma not forgiving her for not winning the tournament, life is full! Other than a custard cream and muffin, life goes on
Once again several stories come together with great results. Jill is still as funny as ever and poor long suffering Jack garners no sympathy whatsoever. The twins fail to out do each other again, but they were a great set up for what is happening in the creche.
I've been reading through this series rather quickly while I've got a bit of time. I felt like there was a whole lot of build up for the Elite Competition, and then when it finally arrived... it was a bit anti-climactic. Perhaps there was supposed to be that feeling, as far as the results. But the event itself was over in a jiffy. There just wasn't much to it after all the hype.
This series is so easy to read. I love all the mischief she gets into without even trying. Grandma is a hoot and the twins seem clueless. I look forward to the next in the series!
It appears that Jill Maxwell p.i. has out done it again! She saves woolly mammoths, witches married to humans, and the livelihood of the fairy population. I'm not sure if I can wait to see what she does next.
Clever, imaginative, funny and quirky! I love the periodic talking to the reader and the clever schemes that Winky devises. The inventiveness of the quirky neighbors. Adele Abbott has a great imagination into what could be possible in alternative worlds.
Twisty. Moving in moving out moving on. Break ins and murder! That rotten landlord and breaking the tens of the and Winky gets a new job title. All this leads to fun reading
Absolutely wonderful characters that interact with each other beautiful! Fabulous plot twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend this series.
It is amazing just how successful that Jill Gooder Maxwell is. It's a amazing because, as good as she is, her cat seems to be making more money than her. Another set of mysteries and family fun.
Another fantastic cozy mystery in the Witch P.I. series! This is book 29 and keeps the tradition alive of including both mysteries that are solved in completion and continuing a deeper investigation that evolves with each book. Highly recommended!
This has been a fabulous series from book 1. The characters are funny and amazing. You can’t go wrong with Jill and her custard creams. Read them all!!!
Story getting better, characters more developed. The books are not , predictable or simple. Very entertaining. Each new book opens the door for another even better book.
I am on book #30 in this series. I can't seem to put them down! Yes, I have read all 29. Really enjoying this series. Light reading, with some twists, and turns, and a lot of laughter!
