Lauren & Matthias are both rare paranormals but at opposite ends of the danger spectrum. Except Lauren's ability to see the danger level posed by others actually makes her dangerous to those who want to stay hidden.
So if Matthias is a most dangerous 10, and Lauren is a danger to him & any like him, then what number is she sporting? She's too busy trying to stay hidden & survive to think about much else.
It's true there is some repetition & a bit of lag, but it made Lauren's indecision & the suspense feel more real - is she in bigger danger if she runs or if she stays?
I did have a few questions about the world the author created & Lauren's talent in particular, but hopefully the answers will be revealed in the succeeding installments - along with the mysteries yet to be revealed about Lauren's past & who - or what - Matthias is!
Interesting world where different powers are used and brokered. It is a paranormal urban adventure with a little clean romance, but it felt a little flat for me.
I really enjoyed this series opener, which gave me the engaging characters and relationships I've experienced in previous Kimberly Rogers books, but with an added element of suspense. I plan on continuing in the series, but will probably wait until a weekend so that I don't have to worry so much about bedtimes. I could, and did, set this aside as life intruded, but was anxious for the characters while reading. In real life I don't always know what the best path to take is (though usually I'm not in life threatening danger if I make the "wrong" choice), and I thought Rogers did a good job capturing that sense of indecision in this book. So many times this kind of story is formulaic enough that the reader knows, even if the character doesn't seem to, what the "right" or life-saving choice is or should be. But in this book first one and eventually both main characters struggle with leaving or staying and when or how to go (or stay) and I genuinely had no idea which decision made the most sense for the situation they were in either. I put "wrong" and "right" in quotation marks because there really isn't an absolute "wrong" or "right" to any of these decisions made in life. There's just the option you choose and what follows. And that's how it felt in this story. The rest of what follows will come in the next book, but I appreciated that this book didn't have what I would consider to be a true cliffhanger. If you wanted to stop here, there's enough of an ending for you to decide all turns out okay. But there are still a lot of questions out there, and my curiousity and interest were sufficiently piqued that I will continue.
Really enjoyed this new world with elements similar to the Therian Way series, and Lauren and Mathias' slowly developed relationship. You get a bit of her back-story, so you can empathise with her as the mystery and tension of the drama builds. And you can completely understand her reticence in trusting Mathias, someone so potentially dangerous to her
It is fun to "watch" two lonely souls, however unlikely, be drawn together over time, and their relationship not be contingent upon them being in danger most of the time. I like how Lauren is portrayed, as fearful, yet strong when she has to be. It's a wonder she's able to maintain her cool in the midst of being attacks, interrogations, and attempted coercion. Lauren is a very special heroine.
Mathias is an unusual, near extinct species - I can hardly wait to find out what it is! It's enough for now to know he is a brave, thoughtful, kind, steadfast, and most importantly an honorable hero. I look forward to learning more about him in the next book of the series.
I'd love to give this book 5 stars, but the KU edition I read had so many errors, including incorrect word (such as "emphasize" instead of "empathize" twice!), that it made reading quite distracting.

Threats by Numbers is the first book in the Rogue Spotter series by Kimberly A. Rogers.
This book was progressing so beautifully, and then tragically hit an inescapable wall. I didn't even compute how far into the book, and how yet unresolved all of Lauren Hope's fears were. There reached a point where it appeared the author was trying to ferret out more words per chapter, but had invariably less to actually say. Where the dialogue became circuitous and repetitive.
While I find the concept of so easily identifying a person's threat level intriguing, I still find myself questioning whether the threat assessment is in regards to her or the world at large? And in either case, what makes the mysteriousness that is Matthias so dangerous?
Their burgeoning flirtation had a fated mate feel. I kept expecting the story to veer towards a shifter reveal conversation, and was left unfulfilled. Matthias' species is a larger mystery to the man himself. He speaks of rituals, elder expectations, his ancient traditions, and yet we have no hints (besides Scotland) of what supernatural force he could represent.
I can't decide whether to continue on with this literary world. There's no devouring need to find out more, just the unassuming feeling that I'll be left wanting again if I attempt another book in the series.
Lauren is a Spotter, a rare paranormal species which had at one time been hunted and nearly wiped out. Spotters know people's danger levels by the number over their heads. She's been running most of her life, and when she meets a 10, a very rare number, she is petrified and ready to run again, but before she can do that he works to get her to trust him and to show her that whatever she see's above his head, he isn't dangerous to her.
Weard wants Spotters for an unknown reason and they are tracking them down again - killing them if they refuse to work for them. Mathias works for Weard, but he isn't aware of the dangerous changes that are going on in the company. As he works to gain her trust, he and Lauren find that they care for one another, which can be a very dangerous thing for his species and hers!
This is a clean read although there is sexual tension at times.
For the most part, I liked this book. It was different from most paranormal books I've read, and I liked the storyline. The only thing really bad I have to say about the book is that it lagged in parts where it could've picked up the pace. And a number of things continued to be repeated even though those ideas had already been established. But otherwise, it was a decent read. I might continue with the next book just because I'm insanely curious to know what Mathias is.
This is the third time I have read this series, and it hasn't become any less exciting. This is a 5 star series for me, though I rate each book 4 stars. I love this series. The suspense, action, humor, imagination, and of course the romance. This series has one of the best love stories of all time, between two amazing characters you will be rooting for from the beginning. The story itself is amazing and it is not one of those series where the story gets drawn out longer than necessary. The world is incredible and the unique take on supernaturals is fun. Spice: None
It's driving me crazy not to know what he actually is, and the "I have feelings but - No! - ANGST!" of characters supposedly in their thirties, and the book could definitely use a run through by a better proofreader (lots of misplaced commas) -- BUT. I love the world she's built, the story is intriguing, and she nailed my beloved PNW to a T. I think at their heart, the characters have good depth to them, despite some of the repetitive surface angsting, and I'm looking forward to reading more.
This book was so interesting and grabbed my attention pretty quickly. I loved the paranormal elements, but had a hard time understanding them because there wasn’t much description or explanation of them to begin with. The characters were good, but I also felt like sometimes it was rushed and the book as a whole could use a good edit with the many errors it had. That being said, it was a fun story and I loved the danger/suspense, and the hints of romance too.
When you can see how dangerous every person is, you live cautiously. When a man with number that shouldn't exist gets under your skin, you should run. But do you run to him, or away? This is a great beginning to an interesting series with clean romance and suspense. Ends in a cliffhanger.
What an amazing tale. The concept of spooters that see people threat level. The characters are believable and the adventure is a journey of discovery. This is a book that has kept me turning pages and reading until I fall asleep with my eyes open. I am looking forward to the rest of this series. Clean and amazing!
I'm not usually into paranormal fiction but I enjoyed this one. It was recommended by another author that I love so I thought I'd give it a try. I was a good clean book. I'm enjoying the suspense and will read the next book cause I can't wait to see what happens.
Really enjoyed this take on the paranormal! Lots of character building. Not so much world building yet, but I’m sure since it’s a series we’ll see the world grow as well. But the characters are well written and still mysterious!
This book was just dull. I felt no sympathy for the protagonist, who spent the entire book being so craven it made me uncomfortable. The other protagonist was just a constant tease from the author, who clearly wants to do a dramatic reveal, but I didn't have the patience to wait around for it. I DNF'ed about 2/3 of the way through the book, when it was clear that it wasn't gonna get better.
