Dark Garbage embodies a familiar fantastical retreat - from reality into an elaborate mind-scape. In this rendition of retreat, Esther the human and Mona the butterfly must brave a world full of ferocious predators, false prophets, and meaninglessness in hopes of stumbling upon an elixir that will make life more tolerable. In the face of heavy themes, Emma Jon-Michael Frank meets despair with humor and contradicts loneliness with the social act of sharing a version of their internal world with a readership. Dark Garbage reveals the comedy in self-isolation, and offers comfort to those feeling the absurdity of our reality. I loved the humor, the poetry, and the opportunity to join Esther and Mona on their ridiculous, insightful, and meandering adventure.
