This review is of “Beyond Surrender” by Joyce Myrus. (Published in December, 1988, there are three books connected to this book).

“Beyond Surrender” begins on Long Island, just before the turn of the 20th Century. Justine Hawkes, the heroine of the book (she is the youngest of five children and the only daughter to Brigida and Slade Hawkes, the protagonists of “Sweet Fierce Fires”), has just ended her latest engagement (it is not clear how many engagements Justine has had). Concerned about a possible scandal, Brigida and Slade send Justine and one of her brothers, Gray, to France for a business/pleasure trip (Gray is going to buy horses for the family’s stables and poloponies for Slade).

Soon after arriving in France, Justine meets a man and has sex with him. That man is Nicholas Jones, the hero of the book and a bit of a bon vivant and womanizer. Problems soon arise as Nicholas’ twin brother, Anthony, an artist, also fancies himself in love with Justine. As the scene shifts from Europe to India and back to New York, Justine and Nicholas fall in love. However, the fact that Anthony is also in love with her complicates things. A jealous rival of Justine’s also makes trouble for her and Nicholas.

Justine, Nicholas, and Anthony later travel to the Jones’ brothers ranch in California, to find a horse they can train for a major horse race in Europe.

As Justine is riding in the race, her horse is killed by Rowena McGlory-Justine’s cousin, and Italian Count Mauro Zenga; their escape is thwarted by Nicholas, who, after discovering that Anthony helped them, shoots him. (Anthony survives).

In the end, Nicholas forgives Anthony, Justine and Nicholas marry, become parents many times and have their Happily Ever After.

Upside: I made a vow to finish every book I’ve purchased with my own money. It was a challenge with “Beyond Surrender”, but that vow remains intact.

Downside: “Beyond Surrender” is a book about rich, dissolute people doing rich, dissolute things, with emphasis on descriptions of interior design and furnishings.

“Beyond Surrender” is not:

A book with interesting, likeable characters.

A book with character development or depth.

A book with an actual storyline.

Sex: Justine and Nicholas have sex several times in the book. The love scenes are just as boring as the rest of things.

Violence: The violence takes place at the end of the book, with the killing of Justine’s horse and Nicholas shooting Anthony. The violence is not graphic.

Bottom Line: There are four connected books in this “series” by Ms. Myrus. I’m still waiting for a good one.
